Limit result source to site column

I have a site column "BusinessArea" and created managed property with same name "BusinessArea" which at the moment has 4 possible values: "Property", "WC", "LA", "MA". In my default page,I have
a dropdown with these 4 possible value. based on selection of dropdown item, i am passing it as query string parameter to load the cutom landing page .for example :
.aspx?BusinessArea=Property. so my custom landing page has 4 possible value.
My custom landing page has a search box in the master page. So when user clicks the search button ,I want to limit search to this specific BusinessArea site column selected by the user not the entire site. For example if user is in "Property" landing
page and types "Payment" in search box and hits search button then the searchcenter page should return the all the list items where site column BusinessArea="Property" and any other property matches "Payment".
Thanks in advance!!

i dont think you can restrict an admin to change it. check this http://en.share-gate.com/blog/sharepoint-2013-search-settings-and-search-box-drop-down-menu

  • Adding new site columns to my issue tracking List, will result in having their Source field as blank inside the Issue content type

I have added an Issue tracking list to my SharePoint team site 2013. Then I wanted to add 5 extra columns to my list . So I did the following:-
    I went to site settings.
Then I added 5 new site columns.
I went back to my list setting, I click on the “Issue” content type, and I added the 5 newly added site columns to my "Issue" content type , using the “Add from existing site or list columns” link as follow:-
And then these columns were added automatically inside the Edit, Create& Display forms.
But since this is the first time I work on such a task , so I want to make sure that I did every thing correctly. Because I am not sure why the 5 newly added site columns will have their source field inside the “Issue” content type as blank , as shown in
the above picture. So does this indicate that there is a problem ? or this is because I have added the 5 newly added site columns to the List content type and not inside the Content type at the site level ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
It’s by design, the Source field means the content type name.
As you said, when we create a new column, if we not attach the column to a content type, then the column would have not the source field option.
However, if you create a new column, then add the column in a content type, the content type would automatically update in the site.
Now, you would see a source content type appear.

  • Passing a query-limit-value to a Computed-Column on the Results Page

    Hello All,
Is it possible to use a user-selected variable-limit (filter), and pass it to an IF statement in a Computed-Column in a Results Screen.
    Example:
I have a Computed Column in a Results screen which uses the following logic:
    if ( Accounting_Period == "2" && Ledger == "ACTUALS" ) {Year_to_Date_Actuals} else (0)
    Instead of [Accounting_Period == "2"], I would like to set Accounting_Period == <variable_query_limit>
    How would one do this?
    Thanks!
    smg

if not using a dashboard you may want to look at the OnPostProcess event and put script there to collect the selected value of the limit and modify the computed column of the results section.
    strongly recommend you review documentation

  • Use Querystring to define result source for searching

I am migrating a site from SP2010 to SP2013. One of page contain a search result webpart. By define the querystring like this:
    SearchResult.aspx?k=Scope:Hotnews
It will return only the defined scope results.
However, SP2013 no longer provide Scope. Can I perform similiar trick with querystring? I have setup a Result Source "Hotnews" on my SP2013 farm. But I don't know the syntax in querystring or is it even supported. Could you please guide me? Thanks.

    Hi  Mark,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to set the result source of your search result web part to a custom result source "Hotnews" in SharePoint Server 2013.
For achieving  your demand, you can limit search results of your search result web part as below shows:
    Reference:
    http://techmikael.blogspot.com/2013/04/limiting-search-results-in-sharepoint.html
Also you can have a look at these blogs:

  • In PWA, can I use a "Site Column" as "Custom Field" or vise versa?

    Hello,
I am using PS 2013; I was wondering how/where "Custom Fields" are created? How there are related to the Site Column?
Can I create a site column and use it as a Custom Field?
Hope my question is clear ^_^

    Hello,
As Guillaume has mention, there is no link between SharePoint site columns and Project Server custom fields, they are different entities used for different parts of the system. Site Columns are a SharePoint setting that can be used in the lists / libraries
on the SharePoint sites. Project Server custom fields are used by Project Server and not SharePoint. Project Server custom fields are created via the PWA > PWA Settings > Enterprise Custom Fields and Lookup Tables page. You can see a post
here on creating Project custom fields in the second half of this post:
    http://pwmather.wordpress.com/2014/01/17/getting-started-with-projectonline-part-2-ps2013-office365-project-ppm-sharepointonline-pm/
Scroll down to the section starting with: "Before we look at creating custom fields lets have an overview.." for details on custom fields.
You can also create Project Server custom fields and lookup tables programmatically using the PSI / CSOM / JSOM if needed.
There are ways in which you can "sync" SharePoint columns with Project Server custom fields but this is not out of the box. You would need to look at developing your own solution or look for a 3rd party solution. Fluent Pro have a solution to sync
Look up tables with other sources such as a SharePoint list, see the Lookup Manager here:
    http://www.fluentpro.com/project-server/other-products/products-for-project-server-2013/
If you just want Project Server data / fields to be available as a option for a list item on a SharePoint list, look at using the BCS, an example can be seen here:
    http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/epm/archive/2010/11/02/adding-project-server-data-as-columns-to-sharepoint-sites.aspx
    Hope that helps

  • Infopath 2013 - Values are not appearing in a drop down field referencing site column which uses lookup in custom list

I have a master custom list that has a set of site columns. For each site column there is a lookup to a custom list with reference data. When I edit the list in data entry view all values in drop down fields work fine, but when I customize the form for
the master list, no data appears in the drop down fields. I can change the data binding on the form so it references the the correct data and when I preview the form it works. But when I publish it, no data is available in these drop down fields.

    Hi  shakonarson,
According to your description, I try to reproduce your scenario but the lookup field works fine.
When we customize the form for the  list  in the InfoPath 2013 , it is by design that the Drop-Down List Box control cannot  display its value.
For troubleshooting your issue, please take steps as below:
Go to lookup List Box on your form in  InfoPath 2013 , right click it and choose “Drop-Down List Properties” from the bottom of your field menu.
Make Sure you select “Get choices from an external data source” and correct Data source.
Make Sure the Xpath  of Entries is “d:SharePointListItem_RW” under the dataFields.
Here is a good blog for sorting lookup column DropDown by customizing your list form with InfoPath you can have a  look:
Sort SharePoint lookup column Dropdown by customizing your list form
    with InfoPath
    Hope this helps!

  • Best way to limit results from a query.

I need to limit the number of results returned from the database to the first x rows. What I need is a database independant way to achieve this - i.e. I can't use LIMIT, TOP, etc. in my query.
My question therefore is does statment.setMaxRows(x) restrict my results at the database level or my application's view to the database? I.e. will the complete SELECT * run within the database but the first x will be returned to the resultset, which could be quite a performance drain at db level. Or will this have the same effect as running a query SELECT TOP X FROM... which will be a much quicker query to run?
    Any help greatly appreciated!

The best, and only fool proof way to limit results (rows, columns) from a query, and not waste database resources is to code your query so it only returns the rows and columns that you need. That might mean providing date ranges, sequence number ranges and all other WHERE criteria that can be used to filter the data to exactly what you need.
There are ways to limit what is available to your Java program, but in most cases, the entire SQL must be completed before any results can be returned. The simplest example is; using the SORT command to get the data into the order you require, will first require that all rows be made available to the sort. The fact that you only want the top 5 rows doesn't matter to the DBMS because it cannot give them to you incrementally.
Focus on getting your SQL as efficient as possible. If the SQL runs efficiently, you can use almost any of the JDBC commands to limit, list, cursor forward and backward, etc, without regard to their overhead.

  • Managed Property in Refinement - why not use the automatically-created site column managed property

    Hi,
I read that although SharePoint 2013 automatically creates managed property for site column (OWS_Q_TEXT_COLUMNNAME) - in the refinement i should use a managed property and map to the ows_columnname. why?
    what's the difefrence?
what is best - to create a new managed property (and set it as refinable) or use the OOB Refinementstring0, Refinementstring1 etc.)?
    keren tsur

You are probably talking about this blog post.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/tothesharepoint/archive/2013/11/11/how-to-add-refiners-to-your-search-results-page-for-sharepoint-2013.aspx
The reason you want to use the ows_columnname crawled property is because it is of the correct data type. The other is always text. If the site column is a date or a decimal then using the OWS_Q_TEXT... crawled property, will cause the refiner not to display
the appropriate control, for example a slider control for a date type refiner.

  • Error with OpenSearch result source in Sharepoint online

I have error with result sources that use the Opensearch protocol. I add them via Site Settings -> Edit Result Source -> New Result Source but everytime I test them in the Result Sources list I get error saying
    key is null or empty
    Parameter name: key
This same happens every time regardless of the source Url. I've tried with sources like Live Search (Copied the url from the preset source "InternetSearchResults"), and other sources I've found from documentation and examples for Opensearch
    feature.
Also, the error message is always the same when testing the Result Sources from the Result Source list, Query Builder or searching from Sharepoint site.

I am having the same issue on o365 E3... any input on this? I have tried on 2 different envs.

  • Bing based federated result sources not returning any results for non-English languages

I have a result source with this query:
    http://www.bing.com/search?q={?searchterms}  language:fr site:msdn.microsoft.com&format=rss&count=50&first={startIndex}
This used to give me 40-50 results for common terms like download, blog etc.
From today (7/14) IST, this source does not return any results. There are no results if I execute this query directly in IE either.
Same behavior observed for: language:es, language:de etc.
I do however get results as expected for language:en.
Any idea what the issue might be?

    Hi Swapnil,
According to your description, my understanding is that no results returned when searching with non-English in the Result Source query.
I tested the same scenario per your post and I got the same results as you got.
I recommend to change the language:fr in the Result Source query to be lang=fr to see if the issue still occurs.

  • Sending search box query text as is to opensearch result source.

I have a Sharepoint online 2013 subscription. I created a Sharepoint site and configured a search result source, search result query for a custom opensearch backend. I want to pass the search query entered by user as is without any transformations to opensearch
backend, but everytime user enters search criteria SharePoint is transforming it to KQL before sending it to opensearch backend. Is their a way to bypass all these transformations and send search query as it is ?

    Hi Ram,
Here is an article which describes how to integrate Bing to SharePoint (online) 2013 search:
    http://www.jasperoosterveld.com/2013/05/integrate-bing-with-sharepoint-online-2013-search/
If you refer to the How the search system processes a query part in the article below:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/library/jj219620(v=office.15)#HowQueryProc
You will find out that before "Sending the query to the search index or another search provider", search system will be "Parsing the query and creating a query syntax tree for internal use" and "Processing the query linguistically
by performing word breaking, stemming, spelling correction, and synonym expansion".
Sometimes we could put query words in Double Quotes, so that search system will treat them as an entity. If this still doesn't solve your issue, please explain more about your issue or make an example.

  • Bug report - OOB site column ArticleStartDate is crawled according to GMT0 not user/server timezone

This issue can be reproduced easily on any SP2013 farm (on-premise) and I heard Sharepoint online do not have this problem.
Issue: Site column "Article Date" with fieldname "ArticleStartDate" is crawled as GMT 0 regardless what timezone your web application, site setting, user setting and OS are set. Also when you submit a search you need to use GMT 0
otherwise you will get wrong result. I believe it is bug because other datetime columns like "Modified" have handled timezone issue very well.
To reproduce: On a SP2013 farm (on-premise), check your timezone settings (in my environment it is GMT+8). Then create a site collection and enable its Publishing Infrastructure feature. Then you will see some site columns are setup including "Article
Date" (field name "ArticleStartDate"). Now create a custom content type and add some columns including "Article Date" to it. Create some sample items using the custom content type and remember fill in the value for "Article Date".
By default it should allow you pick a "Date" only. After save the change you should see "Article Date" is saved like "2014-06-18 00:00:00" if check with powershell.
After create some sample items start a full crawl. You will see find two crawled property "ows_q_DATE_ArticleStartDate" and "ows_ArticleStartDate" appear in Search Service Application -> Search Schema. There are some existing managed
properties mapping to those crawled properties like "ArticleStartDateOWSDATE" (which is TEXT datatype).
Here you can create some new managed property or use existing. Apply search using those properties to test. In my lab, I created "NewsArticleDate" as managed property and mapping to ows_ArticleStartDate. Then I create a blank
page and add a "Search result" and "refinement panel" webpart and start some search. In the refinement panel added in the managed properties setup in previous steps. In the querystring I typed in something like /search.aspx?k=newsarticledate=YYYY/MM/dd
    It is what I see:
    1. As you can see in the refinement panel, because I am at GMT+8 and crawled index at GMT 0, the sample data "2014-06-18 00:00:00" will become "2014-06-17 16:00:00".
    2. Hence, in order to search out "2014-06-18 00:00:00"  item I have to input "2014-06-17" in search query! (in SP2013 the time part are ignored)
    3. By using the powershell provided by Ivan Josipovic (http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/office/Get-Crawled-Property-names-9e8fc5e0), I can see the items
    ows_ArticleStartDate is "2014-06-18 00:00:00".
I hope it is actually not a bug. Please let me know if my setting is wrong. Thank you!

    Hi Mark,
According to your description, my understanding is that the Article Date column displayed with the value based on GMT0 in the Refinement web part.
Microsoft SharePoint stores date and time values in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, but also named GMT or Zulu) format, and almost all date and time values that are returned by members of the object model are in UTC format. So the value
of the Article Date column stores the date and time in UTC format in the database, and the search indexes the UTC value of the Article Date column after crawling the database so that it displays the UTC value in Refinement web part.
The list column values displayed in the lists that are obtained through the indexer for the SPListItem class are already formatted in the local time for the site so if you’re working on current context list item and fetch a datetime field
like so SPContext.Current.ListItem["Your-DateTime-Field"] you’ll retrieve a DateTime object according the specified time zone in the regional settings.

  • Parse SQL query and extract source tables and columns

    Hello,
I have a set of SQL queries and I have to extract the source tables and columns from them.
    For example:
Let's imagine that we have two tables
    CREATE TABLE T1 (col1 number, col2 number, col3 number)
    CREATE TABLE T2 (col1 number, col2 number, col3 number)
    We have the following query:
    SELECT
    T1.col1,
    T1.col2 + T1.col3 as field2
    FROM T1 INNER JOIN T2 ON T1.col2=T2.col2
    WHERE T2.col1 = 1
So, as a result I would like to have:
    Order Table Column
    1 T1 col1
    2 T1 col2
    2 T1 col3
Optionally, I would like to have a list of all dependency columns (columns used in "ON", "WHERE" and "GROUP BY" clauses:
    Table Column
    T1 col2
    T2 col1
    T2 col2
I have tried different approaches but without any success. Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance.
