Lingering issues in 8.0.2

Hi, I've been a user of Logic since 1999 -- this is me:

My setup:
Mac Pro, 8 gig ram, Apogee Rosetta 800
Overall I'm pretty pleased with 8.0.2. I'm able to record and use software
monitoring at low latencies, with quite good reliability.
I've got a few niggling problems which I haven't found a workaround yet, I
thought I'd share them here and see if anyone else has...
1) While recording, or while playing with "record armed", using the "punch
on the fly" setting, I have erratic performance with cutting regions. For
example: I will be recording, and while the recording is ongoing, I want to
cut something else in the arrangement using the scissors tool. (Cut another
region that is, not the region I am currently recording) Sometimes it works,
sometimes it doesn't. When it does work, strangely, it seems that the "Snap"
setting is ignored, and I'm only able to cut on quarter notes. Strange.
2) I am often importing MP3s into logic using "drag and drop". Works great.
Audio file gets put in the "audio files" folder of the song. Audio file gets
automatically renamed into something shorter. For example:
nameof_audio_file_isthis.mp3 gets renamed to something like
nameofaud#E7268.AIF. The problem is that this name is used in the "media"
window, but the audio file copied into the "audio files" folder does NOT
take this name. So, if I move the project folder onto a new drive, the audio
file becomes --lost-- and I must always re-point logic to the original file.
3) "Bounce" key command always bounces stereo -- it does not observe whether
the master channel is set to mono or stereo. So to do mono bounces, I have
to use the mouse.
4) "Quick Swipe" functionality is not useful for me, and there is no way to
turn it off. I wish I could revert to Logic 7 behavior, with "create tracks
in cycle record". Now every time a comp folder is made, I have to unpack it
by hand.
5) Not really bug, more of a feature request. Can we have a key command to
switch a track from mono to stereo?

regarding #1 ... i also just wish that logic would be a bit friendlier with switchin in and out of "record arm" mode, just like a hardware recording machine is. Right now, playback is muted for several seconds if you go in or out of "record arm" on a track... basically logic wants you to stop playback when going in and out of record on a track....
regarding #6 .... I mean I want a key command which is the equivalent of click-holding on the channel strip...... i.e. just "bringing up" the plugin list so I can choose one..... or is there a key command for this already that I'm missing? Or something that can be programmed into my little Alphastrip control surface?

Configurator issues...

Had a long day with Apple Configurator: i set up, supervised and enrolled several ipad carts this summer... We went to add a new app and Configurator forced the whole cart into prepared mode, it took several calls to support to get it figured out.... Here is what we cakes up with:
1. In prepare mode, just download the iOS. No wifi profiles, MDM profiles, no apps..... (Especially iBooks)
2. After the cart supervised: loaded wifi and apps (except iBooks)
3. applied MDM profile.
lingering issues:
1. backups.. took one iPad and made a back up.. had all my folders arranged... Backup failed several times ( found out that was because of iBooks, after I ooks was deleted, I was able to backup)
2. When I applied the backup.... confogurator erased all the apps and reloaded them,,,, but not in the folders.
has as anyone had these issues: backups not formatting correctly and iPads going to prepared mode after being supervised?

Apple was experiencing a lot of issues yesterday with many of their online services, but those issues seem to have been resolved. I just tried using Configurator this morning and it seems to be working... what specifically are you having issues with?

Spark ComboBox click issue

I'm using a spark combobox in my AdvancedDataGrid, as an itemEditor. At some point I noticed that clicking on the scroll bar arrows would close the CB - very annoying. After much research I found this which completely solved my problems - awesome!
One more and last lingering issue left though: when selecting an item from an open dropdownlist the mouse click seems to propagate to the cell below once the dropdown has closed. I assumed that the fix above would take care of this last issue, but it doesn't seem to. I tried to override the item_mouseDownHandler for the CB and stopImmediatePropagation() of the mouse event post its usual behavior, but that also seems to have no effect. I also tried setting the mouseChildren property for the skin['dropDown'] to false, but that impairs the whole functionality.
Would love any help / suggestions.

I'm not sure. Happy to try this out and post code if it helps debugging the issue, but I'm stuck with an ADG, so switching to DG would not be an option for me.

Hp LaserJet P3015 printer "waiting for printer to become available" message

Hello All,
I have searched through many message boards about this issue (some steaming back to as far as 2009) and I have yet to find a solution that has worked for me.
Background of situation:
In my office we have a dozen iMacs and Networked hp LaserJet P3015 printers. Most work perfectly fine with out issue. We are currently running 10.8.4 OS. There are a few issues that seem to be unique to users or types of iMacs. 1) Three brand new iMacs (the skinny ones that come without the CD drives) where showing a message prompting for the "printer operator group". I have that setting turned off but reguardless I added the user accounts to the "printer operator group" as well as the "printer admin group". After I did that the users started to recieve the message "waiting for printer to become avaible". When this message appears it never printers (I left it for a 20 minute period to no avail). I have tried a whole host of fixes with short term success but the issue keeps reoccuring. Here is a list of fixes I have tried:
What I have tried
1) I plugged the iMac directly into the printer via USB cable to install the drivers locally
2) I added the user to the printer operator group and the printer admin group
3) I checked all settings on both the printer and computer
4) I have removed and re-added the printer several ways (from the network and directly via UBS cable)
5) I checked the Ethernet connection to the printer (all are fine) (also eliminated the need for it by directly plugging her in via USB cable)
6) I have "power" shut down the printer
7) I restarted the printer settings on the network to eliminate any lingering issues
8) Made sure the software is up to date (which according to some message boards is what the problem is)
9) I have replaced both the actual Computer and Printer (with another brand new iMac), while additionally creating a new user account to eliminate hardware and faulty user settings as the culprit, as well as plugged the printer directly into the computer and removed it from the network.
10) I prayed to the IT gods
Other Notes:
I did see a solution from a message board that said to delete all "hp_" files in system/library/extensions and then directly plug the printer into the computer to install the drivers that way (which he said worked) but the guys also said that if he ran software update then the issue would re-occur. This seems to be counter productive as I like to keep all software up to date
What I have noticed:
- The issue seems to affect the newer iMacs in my office more then the older machines despite everyone running the same OS version

You have not mentioned it but based on some of the things that you have said, I would assume that the Mac's are bound to a domain. So, for one of these Mac's, if you logged on locally and then created a print queue to the network printer, do you get the same message?

ITunes won't let me drag and drop anymore

Last friday, I closed my Macbook and it never started again. I bought a new one. The guy at the Mac Store said, "Just plug in your iPhone, enter your pw, and everything will work like it used to." Of course, I left the store thinking, "No way is that going to happen," but I didn't stay and fight. Of course, I plugged in my iPhone, immidately my Mac started saying, "You do not have sufficient permissions." To get rid of it, I read a post that said I should select to sync and then unsync everything from the phone (which deleted everything of course, but I'm not that upset about). Anyhow, the iPhone syncs now, but the lingering issue is that my old computer let me drag and drop MP3 files directly from my Finder window to the iPhone music library in iTunes. I DID NOT HAVE TO USE THE ITUNES LIBRARY AND I DID NOT HAVE TO CREATE PLAYLISTS. (I hate people who capitolize things, but I've read in several other posts where people say, "That was never possible to drag and drop, you always had to create playlists." No, you did not. I gurantee you because I've never done it). To state it just once more, I did NOT load the songs into iTunes, then go from iTunes to the iPhone, but instead, with iTunes open, and the iPhone plugged it, I would select the mp3 in the Finder window, then drag it to the part of iTunes which allows me access to the iPhone, and the iPhone section of iTunes (not the main iTunes library on my Macbook, but the iPhone itself) would become highlighted in blue, then I would release the trackpad and the song would load onto the iPhone (but never be associated with or loaded into the iTunes library for my Macbook).
Now when I drag the mp3 over, the iPhone section stays gray and won't let me do it.
How can I fix this? I detest iTunes. I'd be in love with Apple completely if it weren't for iTunes, which is constantly broken and never works. I'm happy with my music stored in my own filing mechanism, with my own method of tagging them, and I don't want to conform, I don't want to "get used to it."
Please someone tell me how to fix this! (Before it messes up my iPad as well).
PS... Of course, in the time my computer broke and I bought the new one, Apple released yet another updated version of iTunes, which they forced me to update before I could even use it. So, I don't know if the phone didn't sync over correctly or the update didn't work.

Oh, also want to add that the PC I'm currently using is:
Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2
My other PC was:
Windows 7 Ultimate
My MacBook is:
Max OSX 10.5.something (the last update available for it. .8 maybe? haha)

3TB Fusion & logical volume group

I'm in the process of fully reinstalling Mavericks - erasing my internal drive and paring my system way down, to resolve some long lingering issues.
Disk Utility shows the recovery partition as separate (I've booted from it) - but when I went to erase the default Macintosh HD partition I was unable to repartition it as a single partition - it was grayed out - and the TYPE was/is logical volume group - where I was expecting to see GUID. All I could do at that point was ERASE... which I did - so it remains a logical volume group -
I'm unsure if, because of the Fusion drive, this is how they come from Apple - or the previous owner messed with it and trouble could loom wth this setup.
It's a Late 2012 iMac with stock 3TB Fusion Drive.
I'm in the process of reinstalling Mavericks from the Recovery (Internet recovery I'm guessing since it's taking 2 hours). I'm not near an Apple Store unfortunately though do have extended 3 year warranty.

Yes. That's the technical name for what Apple marketing refers to as a "Fusion Drive." Don't change it.

Is it safe to migrate my MobileMe account to iCloud?

I've held off on doing this since hearing about issues with syncing and especially shared calendars. What is the atmosphere now? Are there lingering issues?
Have most MM users had a good migration to iCloud?

IPhone Disaster

Just installed iOS 7.1 and did a system restore. My hope was that in doing this I would resolve a lingering issue where my iPhone 4s did not have working wifi or bluetooth. After doing the restore I am unable to restore a backup of my phone. If I try to restore from my phone all I get is a screen that says "Connected to iTunes", if I restore a backup from itunes all that happens is the phone is wiped and I am left to start the process over again.
What I would like is simply get my phone back to how it was before this process began, it would be a major bonus if anyone could get my wifi/bluetooth working.

Have you tried to do a restore via icloud

RSS Feed error in Google Reader

Like a number of people I have been having some publishing issues with iWeb since the introduction of MobileMe. I've managed to solve a number of them, but I still have a lingering issue.
I'm finally able to subscribe to my rss feed on my site, and it displays in Google Reader, but if you try and click on the blog entry in Google Reader it will not take you to my site. Instead it says the page cannot be found.
When it tries to redirect to my blog, from google reader, it adds "www" into the address. However, since setting up the personal domain I no longer have "www" in the address. I thought I had made all the correct adjustments in my MobileMe account and with Go Daddy. However, I still have this one lingering issue with Google Reader.
Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on how to fix this? Am I missing something simple? Or, am I just wasting everyone's time...

What is your web page? The RSS Feed button is not necessary to click on in Firefox. Mainly, you will see an icon either in the address bar that looks like a satellite ( it also depennds on the theme you use) or on the bottom right hand side that lets you know there is a live feed for the page. When you click on that icon, you have the option to subscribe.

If you use firefox you'll see what I mean. However, I have the same problem but I just narrowed it down to my webhosting company, so I am switching companies soon. Just got two new domains and will be transferring this one to them.

IWeb, Dot Mac, family packs... and Domain names???

I'm a volunteer involved with recreational trails and historical preservation organizations in a rural area. I've been talking with the leadership of these (not-well-funded) organizations for some time about the benefits of establishing web sites for each organization. (Publicizing accomplishments, generating awareness of issues, soliciting support, improving communication, etc.)
Prior to the recent MacWorld SF Expo, I was looking (very warily) at some of the pay-services out there where you can pay so much a month (or a year) for a web-hosting service which would supposedly offer a domain name of choice, server space, and other services. Of course, with this I would have to learn how to use a web design app like GoLive CS or DreamWeaver MX. I'm not opposed to that. Web-based tutorial services like Lynda.com make it more possible than ever before. Still, I was wary about getting my "bang for the buck"; the combination of my time and the hard-won funding of these organizations resulted in wavering enthusiasm.
Along comes Apple's iLife 2006 and the offering of a new Dot Mac Family Pack. Looking over the possibilities, there's something to be said for combining iLife '06 with a Dot Mac Family Pack. If Steve Jobs' hype is to be believed, I could put up nice little web-sites for a decent price and have all kinds of technological possibilities for the future. (If anyone wants to post a podcast, it can be done. Posting pictures of volunteer work and developing issues can be a major breakthrough for awareness and support.)
I'm still concerned about some lingering issues, though. Some of these other web-hosting services offer the means of securing and using your own domain name (i.e., your-organization.org) for a web-site URL and even several e-mail addresses using that same domain name. Still, if I split a Dot Mac Family Pack five ways, that's $36 per site. That's quite a savings over $100+ per year per site that these hosting services were asking. How tough is it to get a domain name, and how much does it cost?

Getting a domain name is easy enough, as long as you can come up with one that isn't already taken. You can secure a domain name on sites like GoDaddy.com for less than $10 a year, and it gets cheaper as you secure it for more years at a time. GoDaddy also offers free domain forwarding, meaning: you can have your www.brandnewdomainname.com point to your .Mac url (which will read something complex like http://web.mac.com/username/iWeb/somethingorother). If you don't want the complex .Mac url to show in the browser's address field when people visit your page, GoDaddy will mask it for you for free too. Then, it will just say www.brandnewdomainname.com on every page on that site. If you want each page on each of your sites to have its own easy url, say www.brandnewdomainname.com/about or www.brandnewdomainname.com/contact, you'll have to host with GoDaddy or some other site and pay the price.
If you decide to go with the iLife 06/.Mac combo, the family pack may not be the best thing for you. Have a look at this .Mac page:

For $20 more, you can get twice the server space (4GB), and I think that also includes a lot more bandwidth per month than the family pack, but I am not sure about that. For $30 less, you have the same amount of space as the family pack. What you don't have is the 4 additional e-mail addresses. You can purchase those separately for $10 a year, or, you can use up to 5 free e-mail aliases per account. The drawback to aliases is that messages sent to them will all end up in the main account's inbox, which may or may not work for you --perhaps only if all the e-mails are intended for the webmaster and that is you for all these sites. Of course, you could always list individual non-.Mac e-mail addresses on a contact page, and probably turn them into hyperlinks so that if people click on them, their e-mail app will open a new e-mail addressed to that person. May not be the most elegant way to do it, but if you're trying to save money, maybe it's good enough.
With a regular (non-family pack) .Mac account, you also are not forced to split your server space five ways evenly -- you can host as many sites on one .Mac account as your server space will allow. The main headache for you will be the urls to each individual page of all these sites. If you are picky about them and what exactly they look like, .Mac may not be your thing. Not yet at least. It has the ease of use, but you pay for that in other ways. There's always a trade-off...

Host Name Changes?

Frequentlly, we get "this computer's local host name on the network is changed to 1234567654-1 because it determines that the original host name "is already in use." This doesn't make network peripherals and communication between our two computers very easy because we need to constantly change it in Sharing to share the printer etc... . When we get the notice, we change the name (number) back to the original and it seems fine for awhile and then returns...
I can find no apparent cause?

I've had the same or a similar issue. My computer was constantly renaming itself with a (2) every time it booted, after a system lockup. I tracked the issue down to CD/DVD sharing... when turned off the problem went away.
When CD/DVD sharing was on, I could not change the name back to the original version, it would get rejected and immediately set back to the version with "(2)", displaying the message:
+The name of your computer "Name" is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to "Name (2)" automatically.+
With CD/DVD sharing turned off, I could name my computer whatever I liked, even back to the original name. Turning DVD/CD sharing back on again would instantly rename my Mac. It's very persistent bug!
Fortunately I found a fix. I was able to get rid of the problem by toggling Bonjour, as described here:

To turn Bonjour off:
sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
To turn it back on:
sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
Toggling Bonjour (mDNSResponder) forced a reset of something on my system somewhere, and now I no longer see the issue on reboot, even with CD/DVD sharing turned on. I can turn sharing on and off at will, and my computer is never renamed. Success!
I don't think this problem has to do with CD/DVD sharing specifically... I think it's a bug in Bonjour. I've seen threads where people have complained about this issue because of printer sharing, or remote management! My guess is that a crash can cause a mDNSResponder config corruption, tricking Bonjour to share devices or services using the same name as your computer, forcing the name conflict.
In any case, I hope this fix works for you too. I know I'm a lot happier now that there isn't a lingering issue on my box!

How to change control panel options and shortcuts in CS4

Hi there,
I'm trying to customize the control panel in CS4 and am having trouble with a couple of options:
- I've turned on distribute options but it won't display (only the align options will)
- Where do I find/change the shortcut for "Highlight the first option in the Control panel" (currently cmd 6)
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

since you know the current hotkey combo (CMD+6), you can call up the entire active keyboard set and search for this string. If you do so, you'll find this:

Substitution Variable across two dimensions

Hello,
I was wondering if we could define a single substitution variable across two dimensions. For instance, we have two dimensions Year (FY10,FY11,FY12, etc) and Period (QTR1, JAN, FEB, MAR, QTR2...)
I understand we can define a range of values in a single subvar such as &period is Jan:Dec.
However, given the above two dimensions we would like something like this Jan.FY10:Dec.FY13. I know this would be easier if years and months belonged to the same dimension but they are two different dimensions. So, essentially we want to define a single subvar involving two dimensions.
Please let me know, if this is possible on Essbase 9.

Thanks for all your responses. As Gary and Srinivas pointed out @XRANGE definitely works with a subvar with a few limitations;
1. Cannot be used in a FIX statement
2. For accurate months across different years, the order of the subvar should be FY11->FEB, FY13->DEC and not not FEB->FY11, DEC->FY13 since in my db, the Period dimension is DENSE and appears before the YEARS dimension in the outline.
3. It works in a IF statement
However one lingering issue I have is with a @PRIOR statement on conjunction with @XRANGE within my IF statement:
Note: subvar &RANGE = FY11->FEB, FY13->DEC
STAT1(
IF(@ISMBR(@XRANGE(&RANGE)))
IF(STAT1 = 20)
STAT1 = @PRIOR(STAT1)

The problem is STAT1 gets calculated accurately for all months for that year. However, all months the following year donot get calculated. So, essentially the BEGBALANCE (also at level 0) doesnt get calculated for the next year. Here an illustration of before and after:

So, essentially though the @XRANGE takes into account BegBalance and calculates for each year based on prior year->dec, which is good. However, introducing the @PRIOR doesnt calculate BegBalance. Looks like I dont have any option other than using @MDSHIFT instead of @PRIOR when it comes to using @PRIOR with @XRANGE.
Unless I am incorrectly using the @PRIOR statement with @XRANGE. Please suggest.

Unavailable Out of Area Calls

It is absolutely annoying & frustrating to receive calls that are unavailable. No phone number comes up on caller id & Anonymous Call Rejection doesn't block these calls. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS!! I've received several of these calls the past few days & when I contacted Verizon support I was told nothing could be done! WHAT?! I pay for a phone service & I'm harassed by these calls & my provider has no resolution!!!!!

Unfortunately, this is due to the way the telephone system was designed some 40 years ago. Fixing it now would take a commitment of people and money that no company is willing to make, as it has essentially zero return on investment. While the break of of Ma Bell brought us much lower cost telephone service, it also created lingering issues such as this as there is no one authority that can make these changes.
