Link to DOcument (PDF)

Hi
In the WEBI user guide it appears as though it is possible to link to PDF documents.
"Document cells can be defined as hyperlinks. Hyperlinks in cells are similar to the hyperlinks found on
the World Wide Web that allow you to open a different web page from the page you are currently viewing.
When you click a cell that contains a hyperlink, the target document specified in the link opens. The
target document can be another Web Intelligence document, a site on the world wide web, a PDF,
Excel or Word document, or any resource accessible through a hyperlink."
When we attempt to link to a document as follows:
1. Right-click the cell where you want to create the link and select Linking > Add Document Link
from the menu to display the "Create Hyperlink" dialog box.
2. Select the Link to a document tab.
3. Click Browse and select the target document in the Choose Document dialog box
When we Browse to the relevant folder the PDF documents do not display, only Webi documents display.
Is it possible to add PDF documents using the above mentioned functionality?
Thanks
Ian

Thanks pumpaction,
My formula that launches a pdf document from a folder in the folder structure reads as follows:
/opendoc/openDocument.jsp?iDocID=AficloALXE5PimxTtxjwdTw&sIDType=CUID&sType=pdf\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" nav=\"doc\">Report Info</a>"
The document ID was found on the document properties.
Cheers

  • PDF export with link to document defaulting to "Open a web link" instead of "Open a file"

I have a MS Access database and I'm trying to export reports to PDF (I have Acrobat XI Pro) that include a hyperlink to another document on the same drive on my computer.  I have tested this with hyperlinked email addresses, and emails export fine to PDF and are still functional, opening a new email in Outlook.  The hyperlinks to documents work fine in MS Access, opening a Word, PDF, or other document when clicked.
When I export to PDF, the links to documents say, "This document is trying to connect to: file:" and my filepath.  If I say "Allow," the link tries to open in my default web browser, which comes up blank.  I've tested this on other computers in our office too.  When I right-click the link, I have the option to "Open weblink as a new document" -- this opens the document successfully, but won't be very helpful or fast for our staff.  When I examine the link with Tools - Add or Edit Link, I see that the link's action defaulted to "Open a web link" when the PDF was created.  This seems like it should be "Open a file."  To see if "Open a file" would work in theory, I tried creating a test button in a blank PDF and made the "mouse up" action "Open a file" and linked to various documents on my computer.  Each time, the button does not react to being clicked at all, like nothing happened.
I also tried making a basic Word doc with just the hyperlink to another document.  It works fine in Word, but, when saved as a PDF, the hyperlink does the same behavior-- tries to connect to the web instead of opening the file on the computer.
I have a lot of experience building Acrobat PDF forms and working in Acrobat, and I'm almost certain I've created links that open another file on the computer in Acrobat before, but I'm out of ideas and an internet search isn't turning up much.  I welcome any suggestions for things to try.  Thank you!

This is what I currently have, and it attempts to open in a web browser.  Do you know of a setting in Acrobat I might need to change, or any other solution to tell Acrobat to open the "file:" URL as a document, not try to start the web browser?

  • Can you force a link inside a .pdf to open the "linked to" document in a new window?

When I have a link inside my .pdf document - linking to another .pdf document or to a Word document - how can I force the linked-to document to open in a new window?
I have a web site (business internal, so unfortunately I cannot point to it).  My HTML menu has links to .pdf documents - no problem.  However, once I open those .pdfs, they contain links to other .pdfs and to Word documents.  Clicking on these links, which reside inside my .pdfs, opens the "linked-to" docs in the same page.  How can I force them to open in a brand new frame?
All of my .pdfs were originally created in Word, and in the Word versions, the links DO open into new frames.  I am not sure why, when I convert them to .pdfs, they lose this feature.
    Can anyone help?

    Hi Magenta,
Would you mind reposting this question over on the Acrobat boards?  You've posted in the AIR forum and you'll have better luck with this over there.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Can't open a document linked in a PDF. "This document tries to establish a connection". What can I do?

When I try to open open a document which is linked in a PDF(I opened the PDF with Adobe Reader) there comes a safety warning:
This document tries to establish a connection:
    file://(fileserver)
Is this Website confidential, click on "allow". Is the website not confidential click on "Block".
How can I set the memory location as confidential, so that this warning doesn't come anymore?
    Many thanks.

No, the icon is the old one that got the new ones graphical appearence but is still link to the old Pages 09.
To make certain you open the document in the application you want use Right click (CTRL click) insted on the document and choose the Pages version you want.

  • How can I hyperlink from FM to an external document and make the links work in PDF-XChange Viewer?

A couple of months ago some of you kindly taught me how to insert links to an external document in FrameMaker. The syntax that made all the difference, was the following:
    message openfile "H:/folder name/to/your/file.ext"
I converted my FrameMaker file to PDF format using Acrobat Distiller, and everything worked like a charm when the users opened the resulting PDF document in Acrobat Reader.
Much to my frustration, someone has now decided that the organisation should use PDF-XChange Viewer instead of Acrobat Reader, and my links don't work anymore... Nothing happens when you click on them. (This only applies to links to external documents. Links to e.g. websites work nicely.)
Has anybody got any idea what I could do to make the links work in PDF-Xchange Viewer as well? Or am I trying to do the impossible now?
    Best regards

No.  I am able to use the other features such as underlining, highlighting, adding rectangles and oval and save those changes.

  • Embedding reference/page links to external PDF, in Word document before exporting it as PDF...

I have a substantial compilation of documents in a single PDF file: call this the reference material.
I am writing a narrative concerning the above using Word 2010, which when complete I will export to PDF, to be included with the above reference PDF, either as a separate PDF or (ideally) combined with it into one single PDF.
The narrative will include many references to specific pages (ideally views of individual pages) within the reference material, ideally as clickable links.
The only way I can see to do this is to complete the narrative Word document, PDF it, and then go through the whole PDF narrative document creating page-view links for each of the in-text references, either:
to the reference material as an external PDF, or
having combined the narrative PDF with the reference PDF, and then creating the links.
So... I'm wondering if there may be some slick method of creating the page-view links in the Word document as I go along, in such a way that they would survive the transition when the narrative is exported into PDF. I'm assuming I'm not the first person to need to do such a job!
(I'm hoping to avoid using pre-set destinations in the reference PDF.)
    Using Acrobat 9 Pro Ext.
    Thank you!

I will not address the terminal server environment (check the license on that). However, it could be that the fonts the individual is using are not on the terminal server and that is the cause of the failure. It might work to embed the fonts in the PS file (an option in the creation process) so that they are available to Distiller. Based on your comment that it is a symbol issue, that is my best guess.

  • How to create a link in a PDF pointing to PDF attachment in the same document.

I have Acrobat Pro 9.3.1 and I want to create a link inside a PDF document which points to the PDF attachment in the same document. Though I'm able to do this with the help of the documentation at http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Acrobat/8.0/Standard/help.html?content=WS58a04a822e3e50102bd61 5109794195ff-7cad.html but the issue is that whenever I click on the link my original document closes and the attached PDF opens.
Is there a way to open the PDF (attachment) in a new window when user clicks on the link in the parent PDF?

You cannot save word files to pdf using reader. When you click a link (in Reader or in the browser using the Reader plugin) you open the url in your browser (what browser)? We need detailed information to help.

I have a document made up of separate PDF files which reside in a folder and are linked to each other via hyperlinks. Each pdf file is set to open with bookmarks displayed, however if I link from one PDF file to another and use the "Previous View" button to navigate back to my starting point the bookmarks are replaced by "page thumbnails". Is there anyway to stop this from happening?

    Hi Pusman,
While setting up the links, if you choose to open the file in a new window then you won't face this issue, then you can simply switch to the previous file and bookmark view will remain as it is.
Does that helps with your query?

  • Styling links for a PDF document

    Hello!
I am trying to style my links for this PDF document. They should signal "go forward" or "more information here" in the simplest, most minimalistic manner. Now, I know I've seen symbols like these before, I just can't for the life of me remember where. Anyhow here's my attempt at recreating them:
The blue text gets underlined when the mouse hovers it. The symbol stays the same though.
So what do you guys think? How'd you wanna improve them?
    Many thanks!

Also, yesterday the lines around my text field and text boxes....mysteriously disappeared.
Can someone pls tell me how to get them back as I use them to line up my objects.
    Thanks~
    Tammie

  • Link Excel to PDF Document

I have seen lots of posts for linking a pdf to excel. Nothing related to what I want to do. We use Adobe Acrobat Profesional 7.0.9. I work with excel for bidding purposes(I am in construction) I have a bid document that has several lines where after we are done with Excel I have to hand write in my worksheet numbers on there bid form. I have the bid form scanned and I can manually type my spreasheet numbers on it but that takes a lot of time. I want to link the lines on the PDF to my spreadsheet so when I am done it is already linked to the sheet and I can just print it on there form with my numbers. I don't want to convert the pdf to an excel sheet I just want my excel to be linked to the pdf. I hope that makes sense. I am using Excel 2003 SP3.

One option is to create a PDF from the Excel spreadsheet and link to that.
If you want to update the spreadsheet, you could create a Web Content overlay (or HTML article) that links to a Google spreadsheet. I've played around with linking to a Google presentation, and it works fine. You can update the spreadsheet/presentation on the website and the changes automatically appear in the overlay. I've just dabbled at it, so I wouldn't be much help with sizing/formatting issues.

  • FF4 only shows first page of PDF when linking to document.

I upgraded to FF4. When I link to a PDF document it only shows the first page.

I forgot to add that the first page of the PDF document shown on the email is actually an image. I don't know why the mail client does that.

  • Create Link to attached PDF file

    Hi guys
    I am having a nightmare!
I have been provided with a Word document which contains links to embedded PDF documents.  It all works lovely, you click on the link in the word document and up pings the embedded PDF in a new window.
My issue is that I now have to turn the Word document into a PDF to put on our website.
I have tried numerous ways of PDFing the Word document but none have been successful in maintaining the embedded PDFs within it.  When I open the PDFd Word Doc it can see that there is links, but when you click, nothing happens.
I have accepted there probably isnt a way to do this, so I came up with an alternative plan of saving all of the embedded PDF links to my hard drive, PDFing the original word document, attaching the embedded PDFs to the main parent PDF and linking to them.
HOWEVER! I cannot figure out how to link from the main PDF to the attached PDFs.  I can create a link but there doesnt seem to be a way to set it to open the attached PDFs (which ideally should open in a new window ..) ARRGHH!
    Help!
    Thanks

Sounds like you on a Mac. And Adobe has let this bug go on for 15 years with no intentions of fixing.
Take the word File and if You have Apple's Pages (part of the iWork package) and Open there (will be imported)
Verify That your formatting has not been changed. (Making sure all links work.)
If not  changed, create the PDF from there.
    Go to Print Menu
    Click on PDF and Hold
When window pops up choose Adobe PDF
Follow directions as the Pop up.
All your Links should be live. IF they were live in the Pages file.
It seems after 15-20 years Adobe programmers haven't learned various codes Word uses to make links, and. Even 2011 which used parts of Office 2007 and 2010 to create it. the only difference were UI (User Interface) and key mappings for short cuts.

  • Links to other PDF's broke in Preview but work with Adobe

I have a users manual for my car that is made up of a PDF for each section of the manual. In Adobe and Preview, I can open any PDF, click on the different sections in that particular table of contents and go to that page in the PDF. Preview, however, doesn't go to the MAIN table of contents, which is in a different PDF. Anyone know if Preview can link to other PDF's and not just itself? It works fine with Adobe, but not Preview.

I find I'm having the same problem, but not just with links to other PDFs. ALL links are non-functioning.
The original document was created in Word, but all the links should work properly. I'm even unable to click on links wherein the text for the link is "http://example.address.com/page.htm"
Considering we've got a district full of Macs, and the default program is Preview ( which is also so much faster to load) It would really be nice if these links worked.
