Link to local document

I know how to link or hyperlink to a website while composing a new message, but how do I link to an existing local document?
This seems to be a standard feature of other email programs and would be greatly beneficial in our office if we could send links to documents instead of actual attachments.
Thanks!
Shanna

So I must be missing some steps b/c I can only get to a place to enter a URL.
In a new message, I highlight the word or phrase, choose Link, then AddLink, and I only have the option to type a URL.
What would be the exact steps in Apple Mail to get to a document. I know how to do it in other programs, but not in this one.

  • Word 2013 shows full UNC path instead of local "Documents" folder on file Open and Save

    Normally Word (and Excel) by default will show the user's local "Documents" folder when opening or saving a file. That is what we want. However, after using Windows Server Folder Redirection to redirect the Documents folder to the network (Windows
    Server 2012R2), Word now shows the full UNC path to the network share.
    Instead of seeing:
    "MyPC  Documents"
    users see
    \\sever1\redirect$\username\documents
    Folder redirection is supposed to be transparent to the user. Virtually all our other applications, including Office 2003, respect this convention and continue to show "Documents". As you can see, Word even exposes a hidden share.
    Even if we go to File / Options / Save and browse to the local Documents folder as the place Word should open and save files from, Word immediately removes the path you have browsed to, and replaces it with the UNC path.
    Is there a way to suppress this behavior? Thanx!
    Dana

    Hi,
    Based on my understanding, you only want others to see some part of path name, rather than full UNC path name. It is right?
    It seems that we can’t implement your requirement. When we open a file from “My Pictures”, it shows “My picture” instead of showing the full path “C:\Users\User\Pictures”. “My Picture” is set as a library in Windows, so it hides
    full path by design. We can't set \\sever1\redirect$\username\documents as a library.
    As a workaround, you can upload these files to OneDrive and share link to others.
    If I have anything misunderstood, don't hesitate to tell me.

  • Deleting Links Ridiculously Slow – Document Specific

    I've got one document that is worse than others in terms of removing links. It is a 52 page 4 color piece that just is a dog. The whole thing exports, saves and prints at the same rate as any other document, but when placing or removing links this thing just grinds. It is a medley of vector eps, raster eps, tiffs and psd. Regardless of what type when removing a link it takes my processor to 100.1% and 3 full minutes in order to remove the link.
    I've round tripped the file through INX into INDD and back on multiple occasions and it still dogs out on links. I've resaved every single placed file to be a uniform color space and color profile. The document contains 2 font families in one clean suitcase.
    InDesign when balling up on these links still uses just 500 mb of ram and I have plenty of ram to spare during this. It seems to balance back and forth between the cores on my machine evenly while this happens. I have ample hard disk space to spare and I am working with both the file and all placed links existing locally.
    I've rebuilt prefs and the slowdown does not occur with the links are missing and I am working with just the proxy previews. This happens at the same rate in all three display settings.
    Any guesses? My best guess is that it is the ghost of Claude Garamond coming back to enact revenge on me for my atrocities against type including, but not limited to, baseline shift, horizontal scaling and interchanging his beloved apostrophe with prime marks and inch marks.
    I'm on CS4 v6.0.4.578 Mac OS X 10.5.8 on a 2.8ghz Xeon with 4gb 667mhz ram for what that is worth.

    If you really want to know, and have spare time for deeeep analysis, or as a hint to other trouble shooters around here
    Setup:
    Clone your boot volume onto a spare firewire drive, or do a clean install there.
    Reboot from the separate disk, unmount the original boot drive.
    Install the optional Apple developer tools from the second DVD.
    If you chose a clean install, also install a demo InDesign.
    Actual test:
    Within /DeveloperApplications, there is a neat utility called "Instruments".
    Choose the "File Activity" template instruments document.
    Launche Executable or attach to running InDesign.
    Record
    Do your thing.
    Stop recording.
    Click thru the instruments such as "Directory I/O", identify the major activity.
    Position the triangle indicator of the top timeline accordingly, then clip the inspection range.
    In the bottom of instruments window, choose the symbol with the stylized 4 cell table.
    See the executed operations, and the actual file path arguments, to get an impression of the paths used. Reorder by path. Does anything stand out?
    Just play around with instruments, it has plenty more options.
    If you like this utility and can afford the extra disk space requirements of development tools, install them on your regular boot volume.
    Similar information is also available from /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor (use the "Sample Process" tab), but that sample will not tell the actual path arguments.

  • Document text now linked to another document - how to remove?

    I admit I am new to InDesign and am learning through the proverbial firehose. I have been selecting, copying, and pasting content from one InDesign document into my current working document. Because the new document uses different Character and Paragraph Styles from the old one, I delete the ones that get copied over from the previous document and reassign all the copied text with the current ones. Up until now, this worked without problems. The last time I did this, somehow the imported content linked my current document to the old document I copied it from. So every time I try to modify it in the new document, even the smallest thing like deleting some text, it has to go back and open the old document before it can make the change in the new one. This really slows things down to practically being unusable. How can I break this link to the old document? Thanks! Phil

    Hi Peter. I think I have a better understanding of what happened, although I'm not sure why it caused a problem. The best part is, I think I've found a workaround that stops the problem from happening. I had been working with all my InDesign files on a remote network drive, but was unhappy with the file transfer speed. So I copied the whole folder, with all the Documents, Books, Links, and everything, to a local hard drive and started working on them there. I think that is when the problem started happening.
    After moving the files to my local drive, the file speed still seemed slow, but I didn't realize until this morning that even when I open the Book on the local drive, it is still pointing to all the documents on the network drive. I only realized this when I looked at the Documents on my local drive, and they were still earlier versions, all the updated documents were still on the network drive. So, suspecting that the problem had something to do with confusion of file locations, I did two things. First, I copied the whole folder AGAIN from the remote drive to my local drive. Then I opened the offending Document directly (not via the Book) and deleted the last section I had copied and pasted from the old Document. This seemed to cure the problem of it always looking for the old Document it was copied from. Then I deleted the Book itself, and am in the process of reconstructing it using all the Documents on the local hard drive folder.
    This raises a few questions about the best way to work.
    1) Is it better to edit individual documents of a Book by opening them from within the Book, or should I edit them individually, and then update the Book when I am all done? I'm starting to think the latter would give faster response, because the Book would not always have to update all the Documents with every change you make in one of them.
    2) When I'm done with the Book, I then want to move the whole package (Book, Documents, Links, Fonts, etc.) to a network drive for access by other users. Will I need to delete and rebuild the Book after I have moved it to the network drive, since otherwise it would still be pointing to the Documents on my local drive? Or is there an easier way?
    Also, if you can recommend a good reference with this kind of information, it would be much appreciated. I do have InDesign CS5 Classroom in a Book, but it doesn't have this kind of information.

  • Link to a document in KM

    Hi everybody,
    I have a list of documents posted in KM directory /documents and I would like that a user can link to this document.
    Does anybody know how to do this?
    It is part of a Portal application written in java.
    Thank you
    Regards
    Wouter

    Hi Wouter,
    You might want to check the following approaches depending on how your application can enable:
    - <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/51/ea9442bf2d1031e10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm">Setting Links in Documents To Objects in KM Folders</a>
    - Use WebDAV as the protocol to access to your KM documents (each document URL can be found under "Details"/"Access Links" menu item). Either mount the folder as webfolder on the user local system (for instance using IE "open" and "open as web folder"), or use the SAP 'Portal Drive' to access the documents.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Joseph

  • Correct link to local folder in excel

    I have a datebase of materials in excel document with cells that have paths to folders where the materials are stored
    I want to link my local folders from my network to these certain cells in Excel so that my friends both from PC and Mac could quickly access them.
    Unfortunately, when I add folder address from my local network that starts from smb:// - the system doesn't understand that and turns it to local.
    What is the right thing to do?

    As far as I know it is not possible directly. I made a workaround though which implies making a webpage that does the trick (you'd need access to some webserver).
    Make a simple webpage, eg http://www.yourdomain.com/excel2path.htm with this source code:
    <html>
    <head>
    <script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
      var OpenPath=parent.location.search.substring(1) // retrieves smb-path from URL (all after the ?-mark)
      location.href=OpenPath
    </script>
    </head>
    <body>
    </body>
    </html>
    Then in excel the formula for the hyperlink should be something like:
    =HYPERLINK("http://www.yourdomain.com/excel2path.htm?smb://serverx/folderx/filex", "friendly name to click on")
    (with the CONCATENATE function you could dynamically build the smb-path)
    Done. If you now click on the hyperlink in excel, the webpage should load which takes the smb-path from the URL and automatically redirects to that path...

  • Link to Blueprint documents

    Hello all,
    during the testing a lot of tester had the need to check the blueprint documents. As I know within the test (TA: STWB_WORK) it is not possible to "jump" to the blueprint documentation (TA: SOLAR01/02) of a Business Scenario, Business Process or Step.
    Does anybody know how to assure a direct "jump" from a test case to the linked documentation?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello Manfred,
    if you "create" a Test Case within SOLAR02 with Test Case Type "Manual Test Case" or "Testdocument" and then join "link to a Solution Manager Document" within pop-up "Add Document", you should manage to link to a document (i.e. located at "Proj. Documentation") of any project (even the same you add this Test Case to). After generating Test Plan and Test Package tester will find a link within stwb_work to refer to this document.
    I'm sorry to say that obviously the document only can be read (or saved as local copy) that way. I found no way until yet to edit those documents from this link "back into" Test (Case) Document as it is possible when Test Plan was generated from file-server instead from bbp-structure.

  • After turning iCloud Drive on, no more local Documents

    I turned on iCloud Drive today, and all my local Documents on my Iphone are gone. Even when turning iCloud Drive off again, they didn't reappear. Any chance to get them back ?

    On OS X, don't the entire contents of your iCloud Drive synchronize with the hard drive of your Mac?
    How can someone store files on iCloud that do not synchronize to the Mac? I know you can do this (in a way) with iTunes Match, and the forthcoming Photos App.
    iCloud is not only iCloud Drive - there are also iCloud Photo Library (Beta), iTunes Match, iMovie Theater.
    The paragraph you quoted is referring to the other iCloud services for large media files: music, photos, movies, not iCloud Drive, which is meant for documents - a common storage for all your documents, updated across all devices.
    Music files: With iTunes Match, you can store your complete iTunes library in iCloud, after backing it up on an external drive.
    Image files: With Cloud Photo Library (Beta) you can keep all original photos in iCloud and only optimised previews on your devices. iCloud Photo Library (Beta) is not yet available on a Mac, but will be released this spring (see: Apple - OS X - Photos Preview)
    Videos: iMovie Theater keeps your movies in iCloud and off your devices.
    What happens if I have 500GB worth of data in my iCloud Drive and I link a Mac with only 250GB to it?
    Don't let it happen. Apple does not explain what will happen in any of the support documents for iCloud Drive:
    iCloud Drive FAQ - Apple Support
    Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support
    From my own experience you will see plenty of cloud symbols for files that will not download to your Mac.
    The general idea is, that the bulk of your data are media files, photos, videos, music, that will not use iCloud drive and are not synced to your mac. They will use your paid iCloud storage or iTunes Match storage, however.

  • Tutor: Adding a Prior Activity that does not link to a document

    When the docs are published, the Prior Activities come across as broken links if a document filename is not included in the formatting.
    Is there a way around this so that if someone clicks on a prior activity which is not linked to a document, it doesn't do anything - rather than appearing as a broken link?
    Thank you.

    Can you provide the exact text that you are putting under the Prior Activity heading?
    Kind regards,
    Emily

  • How do I link to a document in the cloud using Pages.  It seems to only give me a choice of linking to a document on my Mac

    It seems to only give me a choice of linking to a document on my Mac.

    You can't hyperlink to icloud. This is what the Pages User Guide says:
    Using Hyperlinks and Bookmarks
    Hyperlinks and bookmarks are used in documents that will be viewed onscreen, either as HTML files or as Pages documents. You can add hyperlinks to jump to another page or to open an email message or a webpage on the Internet. Use bookmarks to mark passages in the document that you want to refer to as you work.
    You can download the Pages User Guide from your Pages Help menu.

  • Creating a new "Link to a Document" opens Word document or upload document dialog - plus more!

    The Link to Document content type seems to be corrupted at root. When I attempt to create a new Link, either Word opens with a blank document or the "Upload" document dialog opens. It's been changing as I investigate.
    One things I've noticed is that the "Link to a Document" Content Type on the parent site collection now shows it's parent as Document. this explains why the Word document opens, but not why the Upload dialog does.
    While writing this question, I decided to check further and it seems that the other document types, Audio, Video etc.  all now have Document as the parent and are opening a blank Word document.
    Has anyone seen this behavior? How do I fix this?
    This is on SharePoint 2010.
    Thanks in advance.
    Barry Cohen
    Barry Cohen

    Well, I spoke too soon. The process worked for all the custom content types, but the default Document type was still messed up. I probably should have fixed that one first, but...
    Anyhow, the Document type had no template going to the Upload File dialog rather than the blank Word document it's supposed to go to. I followed the same procedure I'd followed for the other content types, checking what worked on another site and using that
    template which in this case was a blank field:
    So, I went opened Document, Document Content Type and went to advanced settings. The template field was empty, which matched the working site, so thinking that if I saved, it would match up with the working site. I saved the Document content type and when
    after several minutes the save failed with an incredibly long list of locations where that were being perceived as "read only" plus several hidden content types that were listed as sealed. This snapshot shows a few of they many pages of content types. (I poorly
    struck through confidential info):
    Besides this gigantic error, which would require going to hundreds of locations on the site to change read access settings, which are, as far as I can tell actually not "read only" or are inaccessible, such as the hidden "System Page Layout' and so forth
    which shouldn't be based upon the default document type anyway and therefor not fixable, I need to understand why this is happening and what to do about it. I don't want to spend the next two days going over all of these libaries and content types and ending
    up back where I started with all the content types still screwed up. Afterall, I've spent about a day creating all these custom Content Types only to have the default Document content type loose its settings and corrupting everything and another day fixing
    it and having it happen again.
    This is a highly unacceptable behavior on the part of SharePoint and I would really like to fix this.
    Help is sorely needed.
    Thanks in advance
    Barry Cohen

  • In Pages 5.0.1. is there any way to link one pages document to another pages document.  If so, How?

    Is Pages 5.0.1 is there any way to link one Pages document to another Pages document?  If so, Please, How?

    Well, you could trade it in for a white one!
    First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
    Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
    If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

  • Local, Document and Third Currency Driven Amount?

    Guys, in the presentation and RPD layer, i see local, document amounts for just about every Fin Analytics subject area.
    What if the we want to have a "reporting" currency in EURO (example only). How do we expose that column into presentation layer?
    I see no "Global" column in the RPD except the following:
    Global Currency Code --> Currency Attributes
    Balance Global1 Amount --> Facts - GL Balance
    What about something like "Global Amount" which show data in EURO.
    Thanks for any pointers.

    HI,
    The currency codes for the GLOBAL currencies are set in DAC configuration. See section "3.1.2 How to OCnfigure Global Currencies" in the "Oracle® Business Intelligence Applications Configuration Guide for Informatica PowerCenter Users Version 7.9.6.1 " manual if you are on 7.9.6.1 or 2 or the same section in the 7.9.6.3 version of the manual if that is appropriate.
    This goes through how to set your Global Currencies so they are populated correctly in the datawarehouse.
    For example if you set Global1 to be EUR then your Balance Global1 Amount --> Facts - GL Balance presentation column will be in EUR.
    Alos in ither financial SA's the GLOBAL1 amount is used as the amount e.g. AP Amount -> Facts AP Transactions. If you look at the Logical source for this it's computed from the GLOBAL1 columns.
    Hope this helps.
