  • Generate DDL works in old version of SQL Developer, but not in new versions

    Hello all,
    How to generate DDL in new versions of Oracle SQL Developer for production Oracle database?
    For production database, the generate DDL feature works fine in old versions (version 1.5.5) of Oracle SQL Developer, SQuirrel, Toad and many other similar tools, but not the new versions of Oracle SQL Developer (such as 2.1.1.64.45).
    The SQL tab for a table is blank for me in production databases. Of course, it works fine in development Oracle database.
    I did some research that many articles describe SELECT_CATALOG_ROLE as the required read-only role in production database. Our DBA did a test to grant me this role temporarily, and it worked for me to generate DDL using new Oracle SQL Developer. It is pain for me to ask for this role.
    Is there a plug-in or work-around, so the new versions of Oracle SQL Developer can have this generate DDL feature in production without the mentioned SELECT_CATALOG_ROLE?
    I could not find the answer in older forum threads.
    For now, I will have to install older versions of Oracle SQL Developer.
    Thanks

    I've seen a couple posts about people not being able to generate DDL for other users. To date, I've never seen a anybody post a workaround, nor have I seen one of the developers post a response, nor have I seen anybody say they've submitted a SR.
    I think I remember reading somewhere that the new version of SQL Developer uses dbms_metadata.get_ddl to generate DDLS, rather than some custom query built on top of catalog views...which could explain why it use to work, but no longer does. But whether or not this is true, I don't know.
    You could try submitting a SR and see if Oracle responds saying that it's a known bug and will be fixed in the next release. Until then, unless you get the role, you're stuck using something else for DDL generation.

    Thankx for your help for my 1st question,it has answered.
    My sql developer version is 2.1.0.63
    Coming to my2nd question.
    I have used the following command to check the corresponding user.
    select sys_context('USERENV','OS_USER') from dual
    It show null value for osuser column.
    I use RHEL 4 operating system
    None other than this user,all the user has osuser value.
    So here i want assign value for the corresponding user?

  • Demonstrating PL/SQL Functions Using SQL Developer

    Good afternoon,
    I'm starting to write some PL/SQL functions to replace some of the SQL that I use most frequently.  A couple of very simple examples would be:
    create or replace function func_test (p_1 number) return number
    is
    x number;
    y number;
    begin
    x :=1;
    y :=2;
    return p_1 * x * y;
    end func_test;
    create or replace function func_test2 (p_1 varchar2) return varchar2
    is
    return_val varchar2(10);
    begin
    select p_1 into return_val from dual;
    return return_val;
    end func_test2;
    However, at my workplace I haven't been granted create function privileges yet until I can demonstrate some examples, which is understandable.
    For the time being, without these privileges, is there a way I can build/test functions in principle locally using SQL Developer without the need to write the functions to our database? I.e. can I demonstrate the above in SQL Developer, but without wrapping in create or replace syntax?
    I hope this isn't too vague.
    Using Oracle 11gR2 (not logged in to workplace database at the moment for specific version no.)
    SQL Developer 3.4
    Thanks,
    TP

    populating test DB with data is a solvable problem.
    You don't need client data to test code (functions).
    You only need sample test data; which generally is less than a few dozen records per table.
    Absolutely, of course. Our client database is pretty messy though, and includes data prior to the implementation of more recent business rules that I need to take account of. Useful perspective though, thanks.
    rp0428 02-Nov-2013 19:14 (in response to TinyPenguin)
    Sure, but then I wouldn't have access to all the data in our client database to test functions under various circumstances.
    Huh? Why not? It's your database so what keeps you from creating a database link to your client database where all the data is?
    Also, I suppose it's not good practice to constantly write/replace/drop functions to/from a database when developing them? Better to test the function in principle and then write to the database?
    Huh? Why not? What you think a dev database is for if not for development?
    Based on your two posts so far in this thread it's understandable why they don't want to give you privileges yet. Those sample 'functions' you posted are NOT a good use for functions.
    In sql developer you can just create and save the queries you use most often. There is no need to create functions for that.
    But if you do need an anonymous function now and then just create one using sql*plus syntax:
    Our IT department are pretty sensitive about how they allow access, even to the dev environment. As you've identified, I'm not naturally a programmer so the option to play around with the data to develop some representative examples about how we can simplify and devolve SQL reporting to more members of staff is useful to me. I just wrote those two function quickly for the purpose of posting some sample data, which I thought would be helpful. Thanks for illustrating how to return their output using an anonymous block.
    FrankKulash 02-Nov-2013 19:13 (in response to TinyPenguin)
    Hi,
    The obvious solution is to get the privileges.  If your employer really wants you to do something, they need to give you the necessary privileges to do it.  It's silly for them to tell you to do something, but refuse to let you do it.
    Failing that, you can install Oracle on your own machine, as suggested above.  It's free and legitimate if you're only using it for learning and developing.  Oracle Express Edition is very easy to install.
    As a last resort, you can write functions and procedures that are local to an anonymous block, like this:
    Thanks Frank. Yeah I'm going to speak with our DBA next week about privileges. I've got XE/SQL Developer installed on my own computer - I wrote those sample functions using them - I just wasn't sure how to call/return anonymous blocks as both you and rp identified to develop at work as an interim solution.
    Thanks a lot All,
    TP.

  • 404 error when downloading Oracle SQL Developer 2.1 (2.1.0.63.73) for Mac

    Greetings,
    I'm getting a 404 error when I try to download the Mac OS X version of Oracle SQL Developer. The download page is at
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/sql/index.html
    And it links to the Mac version at:
    http://download.oracle.com/otn/java/sqldeveloper/sqldeveloper-2.1.0.63.73-macosx.tar.gz
    Which doesn't exist.
    Is this the correct forum to report this problem?
    Thanks
    Mick

    I don't know what to say: I went to this link
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/sql_developer/index.html
    Clicked on Download in the upper right corner, re-accepted the whatever-they-wanted-me-to-accept and then the OSX download suddenly worked. Give it a spin and see if a circuit like that works for you.
    Good luck!

  • Problem Dropping Objects in Oracle XE using PL/SQL Developer

    Hi all,
    I am using PL/SQL Developer to access Oracle XE. I created some tables and later dropped them. But I still see some objects in the PL/SQL Developer Browser under the Tables section.
    Below is the name of the objects in I see:
    bin$fj7zj7y9rhqujmwrz1zmtg==$0,
    bin$frxjknkot4cwtkexm4wtca==$0,
    bin$q2m8wls+s72szfufb+mnzw==$0,
    bin$syrcyj1bsqcelpfsodudrw==$0,
    bin$tjt8ipk6ras8qtx0zvn+6w==$0,
    bin$vc6dzazorg6zwemticqdha==$0,
    bin$xfrxhcb3s5ev8wkjfc/3vg==$0,
    bin$oyrdsi+us+yhhoprzdingq==$0,
    bin$vtk7saqqtecbhmdwpnp1bg==$0,
    bin$x1hhdhy+trmfponyldjwdw==$0
    When I tried dropping these objects, I get ORA - 00933: SQL Command not properly ended. Error deleting bin$fj7zj7y9rhqujmwrz1zmtg==$0
    How do I resolve this problem? And then drop all those objects listed above.
    Is it possible to drop those objects at all?
    Thanks in advance.
    Sam.

    There is no problem sofar. The objects you see are dropped objects ( if you drop it, oracle silently rename the object but preserve it as long you have sufficient space ).
    You shouldn't drop them if you don't have issue with free space - they enable you to get back accidentally dropped table without to have restore the backup ( flashback table). If you are annoyed by displaying it in PL SQL Developer, you can just add a filter to not show them to you ( all objects like 'bin%' ) or you can update to newrer version of PL SQL Developer ( i've 7.0.0.1050 and it is displayed properly, all dropped objects can be found under recyclebin folder ). Finally , if you want purge them, use the 'purge recyclebin' command.
    Best regards

  • Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler start up error

    Hi All,
    I just downloaded Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler (2.0.0.57.0) [Released 1 July 2009] by selecting the option "Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler for Windows (This zip file includes the JRE)"
    After I installed the same and tried to run it by clicking datamodeler.exe, I get the following error message
    "unable to create an instance of the Java virtual machine located at path:..\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll"
    On the same machine I can successfuly run the Oracle SQL Develper with no errors. My machine is having Windows XP Professional SP3.
    Any ideas? If there was a problem with Java, than the Oracle SQL Developer should also not run. But as stated it runs with out any error but the Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler gives the above error.
    Regards,
    JAA149

    1 - The above problem has nothing to do with the memmory. I tried on a 400 MB RAM, 900 MB RAM, 1.5 MB RAM & 2 MB RAM with the same arror.
    "unable to create an instance of the Java virtual machine located at path:..\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll"
    http://i30.tinypic.com/9vkwf6.jpg
    2 - There are two "datamodeler.exe: files
    One is at D:\datamodeler\datamodeler.exe
    2nd is at D:\datamodeler\bin\datamodeler.exe
    The same error occurs with both the files.
    3 - The Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler version is "Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler (2.0.0.57.0) [Released 1 July 2009]" and the file I downloaded is "Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler for Windows (This zip file includes the JRE) - (57M)"
    If I look in "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\README.txt" I find
    "Java(TM) Platform, Standard Edition Runtime Environment Version 6"
    If I run "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\javacpl.exe" I get
    http://i30.tinypic.com/mt8ocn.jpg
    If I run "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\jureg.exe" I get
    http://i28.tinypic.com/30boiyo.jpg
    If i check at the control panle add/remove program
    http://i30.tinypic.com/1428tba.jpg
    If I go to "http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp" and download "jre-6u16-windows-i586-s.exe" and run it.
    If I go to "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6" I find the same files as in "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre"
    I am able to run Oracle SQL Developer with out any kind of error let alone the above one. But with Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler I get the above mentioned error no matter what I try.
    As the error states "unable to create an instance of the Java virtual machine located at path:..\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll". The file "jvm.dll" is located at two places. One at "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll" and the second at "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\server\jvm.dll"
    A similiar problem occurs with JDeveloper with the fllowing solution
    http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=506339&start=0&tstart=0
    Which states the following
    "hello!
    in the problem with JDeveloper i have a solution. The jdk have a file jvm.dll in the path: jdk/jre/bin/client/jvm.dll this is the problem ... now in the path:jdk/jre/bin/client/ojvm has a file with the same name if you copy and paste this file to the another path, now its works fine your Jdeveloper.
    Jdeveloper use two files to jvm.dll to work one in the folder /client and other in /server copy the same file to the two locations for precaution
    for me work fine thanks..."
    I tried to do the same (Copy from client folder to server folder)
    D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll
    COPIED THIS FILE TO
    D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\server\jvm.dll
    Nada. So I reversed it (copied from server folder to client folder)
    D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\server\jvm.dll
    COPIED THIS FILE TO
    D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll
    Does not work. So I tried another solution stated at the same forum entry
    "Well,
    i solved the problem by this way :
    <SQLDEVELOPER>/jdev/bin/ide.conf
    In this file, change this line :
    AddVMOption -Xmx512M
    by
    AddVMOption -Xmx256M
    Now, the executable is lauching correctly. No more errors with Java Virtual Machine.
    But is it a good thing to solve it like that ?"
    But the ide.conf file is only at "D:\sqldeveloper\ide\bin\ide.conf" which is for the SQL Developer and not the SQl Developer Data Modeler
    Correct me if I am wrong but
    JRE = Java Run Time Envoirment
    JDK = Java Development Kit
    And Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler needs JRE and not JDK. In any case I download JDK
    jdk-6u14-javafx-1_2-windows-i586.exe (121,306 KB) and installed it but no succcess.
    I tried every thing except completely re-install my whole PC.
    Any help will be much appreciated.
    Cordially,
    Jawad

  • SQL-Developer 1.5.4 - SQL-Worksheet does not use Table-Owner

    In old versions of the sql-Developer you can drop a Table in the Worksheet and a select Query was built. With the new version 1.5.4 the table-owner is missng and you must fill in the table-owner or the query does not work with tables of other users.
    Is that a bug or are there the posibility of change settings to drop tables in the SQL-worksheet with table-owners.

    The drag and drop functionality was updated so that when you use drag and drop the schema is not prefixed for the current user you are connected to. However it is appended if you drag a table form another connection. It appears to have been overlooked for Other Users. We will address this in a future release. In the meantime,a workaround is to create a connection to the other users and then the drag and drop will append the connection name.

  • SQL Developer: Windows 7 64-bits double numerical entries

    I am using sql developer windows 7 64-bits version 64-3.2.20.09.87-no-jre.
    I am entering data directly on tables.
    Sometimes when I use numeric pad to enter numbers, double entries appears on the first digit.
    For example: entering 1234
    it appears 11234 - with first numeric entry appearing twice.
    This also happens with the past versions, different notebook brands.
    How do I solve this problem?

    Hi can anyone advise
    The Problem
    We are currently using Oracle SQL Developer 1.2.1.3213 to administer to the oracle database, unfortunately, this version does not play well with a 64 bit environ. The current airbus standard for Oracle SQL Developer which is happy with Windows 7 64 bit is version 3.1.07, again unfortunately, this version does not support versions of the Oracle database less than I think it is 8. Budget precludes the option of upgrading to a newer version of dbase.
    The Question
    Is there a version of Oracle SQL Developer that will meet our needs for windows 7 while remaining on the same version of the oracle database, or are there other competing products that you could recommend that will fit the bill. The product will require a GUI I don’t want to go back to entering SQL at the command line.
    regards
    Kevin" this version does not support versions of the Oracle database less than I think it is 8."
    What do you mean by this statement?
    SQL Developer is just a client. Clients do NOT have to be exactly version matched to a database. I am running SQLDeveloper 3.2 on a Win 7 Pro 64-bit desktop and my databases are a mix of 10.2.0.4 and 11.2

    Whenever you post provide your full version number for Sql Developer and, if a database is involved the name and full version of the DB.

    Since you haven't posted your version and provided the exact steps you are using we have no idea what you are doing to try to copy a table.

  • SQL Developer 3.0.03  Code Editor Save Actions missing from menu

    I had just gotten a new notebook and installed latest version of Oracle SQL Developer 3.0.03. Seems Auto Save settings are enabled by default. I am prompted each time I switch off from SQL Dev to another app or window to Save the SQL code I am testing. I don't want to necessarily save it each time so I have to save or cancel each time I switch windows. I checked the documentation Help menu and it directed me to the Code Editor section > Save Actions menu to adjust settings. This category does not exist (or is not visible for me) to check settings and make changes. I am Admin on machine and installer of the app so not sure if it is some security setting I am not aware of. Or is this the wrong Help documentation for this version?
    This version is much different from older version I was using. Any thougts on this before I remove and re-install an older version?
    Thanks,
    Joe

    many thanks for your reply jim. i see the settings for 'prompt for save file on close'. this is checked by default and that is fine. if i have a sql worksheet open, as soon as i switch to another window (i.e. visual studio app), i get prompted to save the file. that is the strange behavior i've been seeing with this version.
    i will try to update to 3.0.04 and see if that resolves. i appreciate your help.

  • SQL Developer 3.1.07 does not show a Tables entry under the Navigator

    Installed SQL Developer 3.1.07. Under my Connections window, I log into the SYSTEM account. There is NO tables entry. SYSTEM has access to all tables in the database. It's the same behavior for other database users as well.
    I re-installed SQL Developer 3.0.04 and a Tables entry DOES appear for the same SYSTEM user connected to the same database.

    Hi J,
    I was under the impression that regardless of the Java version that my environment variables are setup to use,
    the installation of SQL Developer (when you install with a JDK), that the JDK version installed with SQL Developer
    is the one that is used.Exactly correct, unless you decide to override it in the conf file. I needed to be certain you did not.
    Anyway, trying to resolve the problem, let's go back to a possibility that something went wrong with the migration of your preference settings. Here is an old thread discussing a missing Tables node in the Connection view (sometimes called the navigator tree):
    Table node missing from navigator tree in 3.0.04
    The poster had to rename the system directory containing these settings, then ignore the offer to migrate settings upon starting up SQL Developer again. If you never migrated settings in the first place, then I'm not sure what more to say -- probably would require additional research here in the forum. But if you did migrate settings, then try the following:
    1. Export your connections (Connections node | right-click | Export Connections...)
    2. Exit SQL Developer
    3. Rename the directory to something else
    4. Restart SQL Developer
    5. Import your connections
    That directory on my Windows 7 machine for the current production release is something like:
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer\system3.1.07.42
    Hope this helps,
    Gary
