Linking files In CS2

I'm a bit confused regarding Linking in CS2 (we will be going to CS4 in August)
I have created a sticky grid and have imported Ordnance Survey map tiles into Illustrator and have linked them. The map tiles are essentially small referenced bits of map in tif format that can be put together seamlessly to form a base map of any part of the british isles. I have linked them but the files size still seems to be as large as if they were embedded. Illustrator refuses to save a file which contains more than around 20 of these linked tiles (it does let you work on the file though and import the tiles which is pretty frustrating!!). Typically the file size with 20 tiles would be around 100Mb when saved. I need to work with up to 50 tiles in a file. Once the files are in place, I open up a new layer and add some pretty rudimentary symbology which is effectively single or 2 colour linework with some text. Embedding doesn't solve the problem either. If anyone can shed any light on thid problem i'd be grateful or if you fancy a play I've attached a typical tile

Your tile is still listed as queued, so I can't view it, but my guess is, that you simply hit a performance snag when AI is flattening the preview for saving. What I would do is to select the layers and disable their Preview option. This way, the program should not render anything in the main document and be able to save it. It's still a kludge, though, so the question becomes, on what system you are working.

  • Illustrator CS linked files problems..Please help...

    hi all,
I have this problems linked files (Illustrator CS2) and I didn't find the answer on this forum yet, so please help me...
Config: All the PowerMac and the server are on the network. Mac OS 10.4.11. Creative Suite CS2. Images of .ai files are linked to an image folder, not embedded.
Problem: I take a folder containing .ai files and the image folder from either the server or one of the other Mac and put it on my desktop. I open the .ai file and discover that all the images are linked to the image folder from the disk I took but NOT linked to the image folder that sit on my desktop. I can not use the "Edit Original" feature because Illustrator will bring me the image from the other disk and not the one on my desktop. Of course I can relink all the images to the image folder on my desktop but this is a big hassle. This problem also creates big trouble when I think that the revised image is on my desktop and upload it to the client's site but it wasn't and the client receive an .ai file with old images....
question: Does anyone came across this problem and know how to fix this? or hear about this problem and know the answer? Please help
    thanks in advance...

You can do that by "hiding" the original links from Illustrator before you open the file. Either put away the disk containing the original links, or temporarily rename the folder or any parent folder containing the links, or temporarily move the links to another folder.
Then when you open the file, Illustrator will prompt you to "Replace" the missing links, one at a time. But if all the missing links are in the same folder (and named exactly the same) then Illustrator will update all other links after the first one automatically.
Save the file, and then restore the original linking configuration. The file will have "forgotten" the old links.
    Hope that makes sense...

  • Help Needed. Upgrade from CS2 to CS3 and now PSD Linked Files Not Read?

    Hi!
Just upgraded to Illustrator CS3 and I am trying to work on a document I created in CS2 and for some reason when I open the document I am getting this message:
Could not find the linked file "filename.psd". Choose repair to locate the missing file, Replace to select another file, or Ignore to leave the link unchanged.
Now I went in to try to re-link the file, but I can not 'see' any PSD files? I had a series of transparent PSDs in that document.
Why can't the new Illustrator see my PSD files and how do I fix this problem?
    Thanks!

Hi! I just wanted to post back to say that I ran the installation CD again to fix whatever might be wrong and when I re-opened Illustrator I could go in and see the "PSD" extension to re-associate the files.
I'm now having problems with Photoshop CS3, so I'll have to sort that now. Not the smoothest of upgrades to this CS3 suite, I must say. LOL
    Oh well!

  • Open,, Save as,, Link file,, CS3 doesn't function the same as CS2!

We have a 25 seat license here for CS3 and we've all noticed that in Indesign when you use the 'open' and 'save as' and 'link file', the window will point to the last place you did this function, rather than the actual folder you are currently working in. Argh! Why is this? Indesign CS2 didn't behave this way. Photoshop CS3 and Illustrator CS3 don't behave this way. It's a huge waste of time.
For some of the designers here it's no big deal because they usually work on the same project (and in the same folder) all day. But for most of us whom will bounce around from client folder or project folder, it's annoying as hell to have to re-path the link file, or the folder you want to open, or the location you want to save to.
I've asked IT to look into it. They couldn't find anything. I've checked the Forums. Didn't find anything. So now I'm posting.
I still use CS2 at home which works the way I'm used to. While at home, if I hit the re-link in Indesign (CS2), it points me to the folder that I'm working in and I choose the file I want. Done. At work if I hit the re-link in Indesign CS3, it points me to the last job folder that I updated a link from,, I have to repath thru the network, find the client folder that I'm now working on, and then chose the file.
Same with Open and Save as. Help!!! Is there a way to change this? It's not a system setting, it's a CS3 setting.
    I hope so.
    Harvey

    OK, Fine.
Thing is,, this sucks. I work in a folder happy design department. If there are more than 30 files in a folder, or more than 3 general catagories, a subfolder gets created.
I think this is just Adobe's way of forcing people to use Bridge. Which would be fine if we worked 600 files here to each folder,, like I do at home. I like bridge, I use it at home all the time on my laptop. I'm not folder happy. Bridge does everything I need. But my workplace is folder happy, and once you put it in a folder, you might as well be burying it somewhere. And I'll work in 6 or more client folders every day. Argghhh!
In order to 'live with it' I've created a folder on my desktop which I fill with shortcuts to the 20 or so current and active clients that I have every week, (out of our 500 or so client list). Then I just click to that folder on my desktop and chose the shortcut.
Sucks that there's not an option.
    Thanks

  • Problems working with linked files in illustrator

Hi everyone, i hope you can help me with this doubt that had given me problems since I started using illustrator. I'm using linked files in illustrator because i'm able to modify the files later, as I do in InDesign too, but in both cases I had have a lot of problems with the links, I don't know if i'm doing something bad, but this is what I do: I create a folder where I place my file (illustrator or InDesign) and the files that should be linked. Whit this i'm expecting of it to work like an html where the links works while they are in the folder, no matter if you move the folder, the links keeps working on the HTML.
But I have noticed that it doesn't work in the same way, because, I had have cases when the links work perfectly, but then i format my computer (Mac) and after that, I open my files againg but the links don't work already. I have exactly the same problem with my coworker, because im trying to edit a file with linked files since the place where it is in the other computer, obviously it opens perfectly there, but in my computer it asked to repair the links, so I select to repair automatically but I ask me to does it manually... So this is getting me tired, because I must repair the links here in my computer to work on it, and when for it get finished, my coworker should repair the links again, and this is going to be always we share files or i format my computer. It is important to mention that my coworker and me use mac with leopard and the same version of adobe (CS4).
So, as I said before, i dont knoe if my method is incorrect, should I do something different? any option to activate? or program that I should use? because I have herd a lot of Adobe Bridge, I don't know if this could have a option that could help me.
I hope finally somebody can help me with this doubt, because im sure that I'm not the only one having thie problem.
    Thanks for your help

Hi. I am also experiencing this very annoying problem. Currently using version CS2, but this problem dates back to version 9.  I check the box to link a tif file, not embed it, in Illustrator. All is well until I save and reopen the file. Suddenly the file is embedded. No other changes have been made to the folders or anything else. It just embeds itself and cannot be linked again.
So far, I conclude that something in the file itself has corrupted, because it is not possible to place a new file and have it link correctly again. So if I anticipate more changes, I create a new file.
Notice the upper left corner of the top toolbar. If you click on a file that has embedded itself, the file will be identified as "Group" instead of "linked file."
I've tried all kinds of things, like trying to ungroup it, trying to release a clipping mask, and so forth, to see what went wrong. Have not figured it out.

  • Curupt Files in CS2

Just curious if anyone has run into a problem where their indd files become curupt as well as any linked files to that document...
I have many files that have become curupt over the past week, all say that the file type isn't correct and can't be open... All say that they were last modified on the same day at around the same time, always around 10 am...
Can someone please help me?! I have thousands of dollars of client ads in those files that would be irreplaceable.
    Thanks in Advance...

Before you begin, you should probably back up you data.
The first thing I would try, is to reset the file association in Explorer. Tools > Folder options > File types and scroll down to.indd. If it isn't in the list, add it.
Select it from the list nad click the advanced button, and from the action list choose open, then click edit.
If InDesign is NOT listed in field for Application Used to Perform This Action, clcik the browse button and find InDesign.exe. The full path should be listed in quotes. If not there after the path to indesign, also type in theis field a space followed by "%1" (include the quotes).
    Say OK, apply, etc.
If that doesn't do it, the next step is to replace your preferences. IMMEDIATEY after clicking the icon to launch ID, hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift (you have to be very fast) and say yes to the confirmation dialog. If you don't see it, you need to try again, and be faster. This method will remove all customizations from ID, so if you have a lot of presets and such, you might want to do the repalcement manually, and save these things to external files first. See the comments in Adobe InDesign CS4 * Setting preferences. This is for CS4, but the method is essentially the same for CS2. The files you need to rename are the same, but are both located inthe Application Data/InDesign/Version 4.0 folder instead of being split up.
If it still doesn't work, it's time to haul out the disks. You can try a repair from the installer, but most likely you'll need to uninstall and reinstall from scratch.

  • Nested linked files - how to update?

I'm just getting started with placing linked files to create a composite form.  I have created phone fields, e-mail field, address block field, etc.  I then want to compose intermediate sections like "patient info" and "insurance info".  Finally I have several forms that will themselves be composed of these sections.
Essentially I have nested linked files.  Now, if I modify my "phone field" file I won't see the updates in the top level form file.  I need to work from the bottom up and FORCE (Save As) each intermediate file to make the changes propagate to the top level document.
This seems incredibly short sighted on Adobe's part and makes me suspect that I'm doing this all wrong or maybe using the incorrect application.  Maybe InDesign handles this better?
I'm using CS2, maybe CS3 or 4 handles this better?
Any feedback, tips or suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated.

If you are saying that I should be creating my own vector assets in ID and that AI assets aren't editable then that would be a bummer for me.
I think you misunderstood Larry here. You are not meant to create the graphical look in AI, but the structure. That is the part I think you are not keeping separate: Content and structure. ID would be a much better tool to do that. You'd import the graphics, but determine how they go together in ID and place text fields and such there. You'd even circumvent the nesting issue by creating snippets, which are basically sparate, but monitored ID documents which constantly are updated, if something changes in one of them. And Larry is not completely correct. You can edit AI items partly in ID like converting outlines to ID text and graphic objects (containers) to control the text flow plus you can trigger layer visibility. It does however not go so far as to allow you full access otehr than "Edit Original..."

  • Detect linked files in Illustrator CS

Is it possible to script the detection of linked files in Illustrator CS and above and actually get the linked file name to check and see if it is in the same directory for relinking?

  • ID CS4 Anti-Alias problems with Linked files

All the linked files i have put into Indesign CS 4 whether they are PSD, Tiff, layered or flat have shown up slightly pixelated. When i print the same file from its native program (in this case Photoshop CS4) the files print clean and crisp and the text and artwork have clean edges but when i link the file into an Indesign CS4 doc and then print it off, the file comes out fairly clean but there are jagged lines on the text and art.
    Mac OX 10.4.11
    Intel Mac Pro G5
    4GB Ram
2X 2.66 Dual Core Intel Xeon
    250GB HD

I now understand your question and yes in the graphics tab in my Indesign print settings I have it set to send all data. I exported the indesign file as a high res PDF and the output on the printer was the same. I don't believe its a printer setting because when i switch my display performace from typical to high-res the text and art from the linked file look pixalated. On the layered psd file the text files are not converted and yet when displayed through ID CS4 the text looks fuzzy and slightly pixalated.
Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Unable to open linked files in new CS3 install

One of my clients just purchased a new PC (Dell Inspiron 537S) with Windows Vista Home Premium to replace his old Inspiron 530 (also running Vista HP). After installing CS3 Design Studio and attaching an external drive loaded with his file archive, all of his Illustrator files which include links load with the following error:
"An error occurred trying to read the linked file "file.xxx". Choose Repair to locate the missing file, Replace to select another file or Ignore to leave the link unchanged."
This shouldn't be unusual, if the path to a linked file has changed, you'd need to point the link to the new path, but clicking Repair or Replace and browsing to the linked file (which invarably is in the same directory as the .ai file, and is usually a .psd which opens just fine in Photoshop) just cycles back to the same error message, ad infinitum. After about 30 tries, I got one of the links to load correctly, resaved the document, thinking that would repair it, but when I opened it again, got the error.
These files were created on multiple computers, and none of the other computers (all with CS3) have ever had any trouble opening them. This despite the drive letter on the external drive being unstable on the old system (would often be J:, K: or L:, and images always worked).
Any new .ai files we create on this file which have links all work fine.
Manually replacing the links in a file is not an option for two reasons:
    1. There are thousands of .ai files in this archive, and re-linking images in them will take weeks.
    2. It simply doesn't work. I tried ignoring the error on one file to load it, and re-linking the .psd backgrounds to re-save it, and the images still didn't load after re-linking them.
I have already tried doing a factory-restore of the system and reinstalling CS3, making sure that there were no errors in the install. What else might cause this behavior, and how can I resolve it?

What else might cause this behavior, and how can I resolve it?
Outdated permissions on the files from your old computer. Right-click, Properties --> Security --> Advanced, disable Inherit settings from parent folders, chose to copy. After that, delete outdated security keys and assign current ones. You may even need to go so fart as to Take Ownership of some files to correctly restore the new system's default security settings.

  • Can I open .ai file w/ text editor and edit linked file path?

I want to relink a placed file in a lot of illustrator files to a new file with a different name. I've tried setting up various actions but it is not doing what I need. If I open the file in a text editor such as Notepad++ or Text Wrangler, I can find the linked file path in two places, if I edit this path and save the file (still with .ai extension) I thought the link would change, but when I reopen the file, it does not change. Any ideas?
If I make an action to relink a file, the action will only place a new file but not replace the old one. I also can't get it to place into a specific layer.
    Any ideas?

CSS files are plain text with no links, so what you see is all there is.
In order to apply CSS to HTML, you need a <link> tag in your HTML.
If you install the Web Developer Extension from the Firefox add-ons site, there is a handy "Edit CSS" sidebar that lets you play with style rules and see the effects live. Note that this pane is not saved, so if you switch tabs, you lose your changes. Make sure to copy out any changes you want to remember.

  • Can you place linked files into Photoshop CS4?

If you place a .psd or .tif file into an InDesign file, you are alerted if any changes are made to that file (as I'm sure most of you know). Is there any way to do this within Photoshop? I have several dozen carpet sample .tif files that are to be used in several hundred "montage" type "carpet sample groups" layered .psd files that will then be saved as images for the web (does that make sense?). Is there any way to do this so that if there's a change in the original .tif file it will automatically change any .psd file in which it's being used? I know the easiest way to do this is in InDesign, but I have two problems: 1) the conversion from InDesign to a web image is laborious, and 2) the person doing the work does not know InDesign at all. I can show him how to use it, but that's a small part of the battle.
Any suggestions? I'm using CS4 for Windows.
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

Thanks for your comments. The problem arises because we have to create that intermediate Photoshop step.
We have, say, a dozen individual carpet swatches that are used to create hundreds of combinations (which are all separate layered .psd files). If one swatch changes (color, for example), then we have to open every .psd file in which that swatch appears and change it (or place the changed one). I'd love to be able to change the original and have it update every layered file in which it appears, just like InDesign does with placed/linked files.
    Maybe there's a plug-in (wishful thinking)?
Also, I'd really like to have it changed in the web development end of things, but we're working with a company that is (obviously) using templates and we can only give them single images, hence the need to create the intermediate Photoshop files.

  • How to make the images show up on a linked file in Muse?

I am wondering how to get my images to show up on the linked files in Muse.  Basically, in Muse, I have a page that links to other pages I designed in Dreamweaver.  I put the images in the image folder and when I upload the site, the page links to the Dreamweaver page ok but the images are missing.  This is a vital part of the site.  Any suggestions?

If you made the pages with Dreamweaver then they should be on your system some place and you could make a "dreamweaver" folder inside your Muse site and upload the pages to that folder using the upload files option... see this thread talks about sound files but almost any file can be imported to muse
I need a recommendation for a slick way to embed audio
    Another option is to link across to an online resource using the built in muse html editor but that has pit falls because once you link yourself outside the site you also lose some control of the content;
For an example of this have a look at an old demo page I made http://chec-garry2.businesscatalyst.com/index.html
When you click on the Brahminy Kite bird you are looking at what used to be called an Iframe but the problem of control is highlighted when you click the Blue Wren and sometimes get pop up adds… I could import the Blue Wren page into my Muse site to fix this issue and in your case that’s a good option but I didn’t because I don’t have copyright over that pages contents and didn’t want to steal someone else’s work.
p.s. if you have got a demo of the  website/ pages online someplace that would help us see your problem.

  • Is there a way for photoshop to AUTO UPDATE all linked files after modified?

Using the new Photoshop 2014 (version).
This is a very frustrating task for anyone using a lot of linked files.
As a web developer, I may have 50 files that contain one linked element.  If I go edit that element, I then have to find the layer on each and every file it's contained in and click "Update Modified Content".  There HAS to be an easier way.  I really hope I'm missing something here.
Thanks to everyone looking to help.

OK. Now I see what you meant.
And you correctly understand workaround instruction. The problem is it does not work and I don't know why.
I'm not so familiar with Automator and indeed seldom use it except for a simple services wrapper under 10.6. So I don't know of any workflows off the shelf which use "Ask for Confirmation" action. But it is easy to create a workflow that, for instance, consists of "Ask for Confirmation" action only and is set to receive no input or input from Finder or input from other application and test to see if it gets keyboard focus. As far as I can tell, this action obtains keyboard focus automatically.
Here's another workaround you may try. Replace the "Ask for Confirmation" action with a "Run AppleScript" action with the following contents. This will show similar dialogue to let you choose two options.
    on run {input, parameters}
        tell application "Finder"
            activate
display dialog "Are you sure?" with title "Permanently delete"
        end tell
        return input
    end run
The workflow will look like this.

Safari will no longer open. It just goes back to my desktop.  When I right click on the safari icon in my dashboard it says it is open.  I was using firefox until I could find a fix for safari.  I made the mistake of changing my default search to firebox later for convenience and now I can't open my system preference or many safari or apple linked files. Try running the 10.6.8 combo update.
    10.6.8 Combo Updater
    System Preferences or Safari Preferences?
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
