Linking text to track changes

Hello all, my end goal is to be able to track changes to variable text that gets added to a text frame that has particular tags in it. For example the text frame may have this:
Save <text1>
Reg price <text2>
I then susbtitute in <text1> and <text2> with variable text but would like to maintain a link to those individually to see if anything has changed. I do not care if the words "Save" or "Reg price" change and I can't use those words to know where my variables are because they may not always be there. Another example could just have variable text, in which I would want to keep track of the changes individually like this:
<text1>
<text2>
<text3>
Any ideas?
Thanks!

The text itself is tagged. I am retrieving the text from a database and replacing the corresponding <text1> with the text from the database. I then want to be able to update the database with just changes that occurr to the database text that got added. It is very simple when the textframe just holds one <text1> with no static text, because in that instance I just take whatever is in the textframe and update the database when the editing in indesign is complete. However, I would like to add the capability of having more than one <text*> label and also be able to have static text.
For example:
Database looks like this:
text1 = "1.99"
text2 = "2.99"
textFrame looks like this:
Save <text1>
Reg price <text2>
After replacing the text:
Save 1.99
Reg price 2.99
Then lets say I edit the second price and text:
Save 1.99
Regular price 4.00
I then want to update the database to say
text1 = "1.99"
text2 = "4.00"
I hope thats more clear!

  • Word blacks out text; possibly related to Track Changes feature

(also posted to Microsoft Answers forum, but I suspect that this is going to need Pro assistance!)
I was editing a 150+ page document in Word 2007 (on Windows 7 PC with all updates applied). I'd already been working with the document for several hours when suddenly large chunks of the document were blacked out. Paging up or down eliminated the problem
    momentarily, but further edits caused it to happen over and over again. Some squiggly underlines show through the black, but little else. We realized that it was happening when I had Track Changes on and displayed the changes in balloons rather than inline;
when I moved the mouse into the area where the balloons were displayed, that's when the text was blacked out.
We figured that the document was corrupted. However, this is also happening now with another document that's much shorter and far cleaner than the first one. The problem also occurs on PCs other than mine. I opened a clean template, pasted the
unformatted text from the source document into the clean template, and the problem persists in the new doc, so I don't think it's a problem with the documents -- or at least not solely.
We tried this on a newer PC with a ramped-up video card and got the same results. It has not happened (near as we can tell) with Track Changes turned off, but I must track the changes I make so working with TC off isn't an option.
Before anyone asks, I cannot provide a copy of any of the documents because they are strictly confidential.
    TIA!

    Hi,
I have tried in my Word 2007 with Track Changes and I cannot reproduce the issue.
Since you also tried in other files and PCs, so try to open the file in safe mode to check the issue.

  • Embedded graphic in deleted text in a tracked change (CS4)

I Placed a Word file full of tracked changes and graphics. When I check the list of links (all embedded at this point), the first one is marked with page "DT". When I try to Go To it tells me "Cannot show link: The selected item is in deleted text in a tracked change."
I didn't know ID understood tracked changes, except in that it seems to accept all of them as it imports. I guess I could just ignore it there, but its presence offends me. Whatever it is, it's something I don't want. How can I get rid of it?
    Ken

Sorry to keep bumping this, but I'm amazed no one else has run into it yet.
Should be fairly easy to test: Open Word, put some text in, turn on Track Changes, add a picture, delete the picture, save the file, Place in IDCS4 with "Track Changes for InCopy" turned on. You should get the embedded picture listed in Links with no way to get rid of it.
If someone can describe to me how to take this through InCopy (do I have InCopy?) maybe I can get rid of it that way.
It's gotten worse: I thought I'd be smart and unembed it and delete the linked file. Now I'm constantly reminded that it's [not] there when I open the file.

  • I can't change the colour of linked text?

I have a black background on the side of my web page containing the menu bars which requires the link text to be white so it can be
seen. I also have it set to change to yellow when you hover over it.
The problem is that this setting seems universal throughout the website and I cannot get the links in general text (such as 'contact
us' links, etc) on each page to change colour - they default to white which doesn't show up as the background is also white.
i have tried creating a CSS rule for links in the body of a page but to no avail.
Can I change the colour of links on different parts of the website?
I am relatively new to dreamweaver with little knowledge of CSS, etc but I'm sure this must be possible.

Yes it is possible to have differen coloured links..

  • How do you copy and paste track changes material in Pages from one point in a document to another and keep both the old text along with the track changed thus far in the new pasted location?

Depending on whether track changes is on/paused, Pages thinks the pasted material is either all new and thus highlights it as a big track change or just copies the old material along with the edits as plain text so that I cannot see my track changes. I need to be able to copy and paste in the same document and still be able to see the older text along with the changes to certain sections thus far. Is this possible? I need a step-by-step "talk to me like I'm five" instructional if what I would like can be done.
    Thanks for any help!

  • How to track changes in text [column type]  changes in MDM

    Hi,
How to keep track changes in Text[column type] in MDM tables. Is it the only way that I have to declare it as Name field?

    Hi,
You keep track of changes for a field by enabling change tracking for that field in MDM.  This functionality is available in the MDM Console.
For more information  please have a look at the MDM Console Reference Guide -> Part 4: Repository Maintenance -> Other System Tables -> Change Tracking Table
The MDM Console Reference Guide can be found in http://service.sap.com/instguides -> SAP NetWeaver -> Release 04 -> Operations -> SAP MDM -> MDM 5.5 SP02 - Console Reference Guide

  • Track changes to text box

is it possible to show tracked changes to edited text in a text box... i can't get it to show changes, but it's ok with text outside the text box.
am i missing a setting option?
    cheers

    ric,
I just made a check and tracking works for me in a text box. The Help File States:
When change tracking is on, you can see:
Text that has been added, deleted, edited, or replaced in the document body, header, footer, shapes, and text boxes
Tables, charts, and shapes that have been added or deleted inline
    Paragraph additions, deletions, or replacements
    Text with style changes
    Character and paragraph formatting changes
New or deleted hyperlinks, Address Book fields, placeholders, or bookmarks
A new or deleted table of contents
    Edits displayed in thumbnail view
Are you sure you've got Tracking On? Comments on?

  • Copy text from word without track changes

    Version: Word 14.0.6129.5000 32 bit
    OS: Win 7
    Hi -
We receive tons of word-documents to our newspaper, and many of these are copied and pasted into incopy. Some of the editors also use track changes in word heavily.
The ordinary ctrl+a ctrl+c ctrl-v copies track-changes-info. (This also apply if we copy to notepad etc.)
Is there an easy way to copy just the text without all the track chages-info, just the final text?
This is a big problem for us, and I haven't found a quick and easy solution on the web.
    Regards -

    (Sorry for bad english)

    Hi Hans,
I just retested this Copy/Paste of Tracked Changes and Comments under Word 2011 for the Mac and Word 2010 for the PC. The results vary.
Regarding the PC with 2010 version.
Regardless of the Show Tracking settings in the Source document, the tracked changes DO NOT transfer from the source Word document to the destination Word document.
Regardless of the Show Tracking setting in the Source document, comments ALWAYS carry over into the destination Word document.
In all cases, source document tracked changes ALWAYS transfer to Note documents.
Paste Unformatted DOES NOT eliminate the tracked changes and comments when pasting to a Word destination document
Regarding Word 2011 on the Mac
Regardless of the Show Tracking settings in the source document, the tracked changes DO NOT transfer from the source Word document to the destination Word document.
Regardless of the Show Tracking setting in the Source document, comments ALWAYS carry over to the destination Word document.
In all cases, source document tracked changes DO NOT transfer to Text (txt) documents.
Paste Unformatted ALWAYS eliminates the tracked changes and comments when pasted into the destination Word document.
On both versions the default settings for Smart Copy/Paste and Cut, Copy, Paste we in effect. All test files where xml formats. (docx)

  • Notes linked to track changes?

We like to use Notes as well as Track Changes in our editing process. Is there a way to link notes to the tracked changes? Specifically, we would like "approved" notes to disappear the way an approved track change disappears.
    Thanks

    Hi ,
Use the report RPUAUD00(Logged changes in infotype data). This report is  to display all documents that were created with the creation of infotype log (short: Change documents). any changes, creation/deletion.
to ensure that changes to infotype fields are entered (changes, creations, deletions), these fields must be maintained in the following views: HR Documents: Infotypes with Documents (V_T585A), HR Documents: Field Group Definition (V_T585B), and HR Documents: Field Group Characteristics (V_T585C).
    Hope this hellp you.

  • How to recognize the linked text boxes in In Design

How to recognize the linked text boxes in In Design? I mean is there any indication, where I will come to know so an so tex boxes are linked together?
    Thanks in advance.

    HI Peter,
well In Quark Express as as wrote earlier, that you can see other text frames highlighted immediately, after you select any of the text frame among the threaded text frames, say there are 5 text frames which are threaded together, even if I click on 2 nd or say 4th text frame, it shows me all the text frames highlighted which are threaded together, so If I am working in a catalog which has multiple pages, it's easy for me to see which text frames are threaded together, as if you make any text changes, say add or delete text in a text frame, the other text frames get affected by that. I mean text shifts accordingly, it's easy to track in Quark which text frames will get affected if I change something in a threaded frame.
Anyways, it seems this option is not available in In Design. That's fine. I am not in preview or Overprint previed mode.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Dynamically linked text and some...

OK so I'm obviously not looking for someone to code this but I'm hoping for some "been there done that" type input.
I have a set of InDesign files that for simplicities sake I'll care novel and another set that is derivative. Now I would like to be able to streamline the text edits from the novel InDesign files to the derivative files. At this point I'm considering the following bloated strategy mostly to wrap my brain around this and then an end goal of being able to pare the tool down to make things a little more unified.
    1) Export the words from the textFrames and Tables as separate text files. (No footnotes to worry about thank God.) (At this point I'm confident in my ability to script this.)
    2) Place the text files into the derivative InDesign files in their respective places. (I haven't done this, it's going to be a bit of a chore but I feel that I can find a way to script this using geometricBounds and contents... I'm in a conceptual phase.)
    3) When the novel InDesign file changes, or once daily, the text script would execute and save over the old text files. The derivative InDesign file would then detect that the links had changed when its opened, links get updated and the new text is filled in.
It seems simple enough but I know with formatting, etc. things are going to get real sticky, real quick, but it feels like a better solution than extending the novel edits to derivative products one at a time. The other solution I can image is tracking changes and then doing a find replace over the dataset as an IDML.
Anyhow to basically summarize I want to push chunks of text from one set of documents into the other sets of documents.

I can see why John asked you about translation, because what you are describing is a pretty normal thing when you're managing documents across 20 languages. "Managing" is the key word here; SDL has all kinds of "content management tools" that will make your job very easy. Unfortunately, such tools are very expensive, so they're more likely to be useful to you if you're asking on behalf of 10-30 people. But it sounds like it's just you, to be honest, so I'm not going to go into descriptions of the global-team-cat-herding tools unless you ask. (They're great, especially if you have to herd cats.)
What I do, when I'm in your shoes, is I make a "fake" translation memory. I'd align my "parent" document against itself, saying that the source language was en_US and the target was en_NZ. I'd do this because translation memory tools excel at doing what you're trying to do (reuse identical content outside of its original context, automagically, with no laborious control-c alt-tab control-v work).  Of course, that's why SDL, a company that has built its fortunes on translation memory tools, has expanded its toolset to encompass monolingual content management. There are other such tools out there, of course, but I mention SDL because if translation is involved in your workflow there's a chance that you already have Trados. All that would do for you, if you were to make a fake TM as I describe above, would be to get your "master content" out of ID and into a database, which is where it belongs if you want to attempt contact management on this scale. That could be a homebrew database, or you could pick out a content management tool that was able to trigger the script to regenerate your stuff in InDesign. I can't suggest anything because I always ignore content management tools that do not have multilingual content management, localization, and internationalization built in from the very beginning.
So, homebrew: I dunno what your background in databases is like. Because I have had this conversation with Mac-based designers dozens of times over the years, this is where I usually mention Filemaker. What's your expertise level here? Because, honestly, if you wanted to script something but know nothing about databases, then I'd say: Move all of your content into Excel. Seriously. Save out CSV from there and route it into InDesign via Data Merge. Manage content in Excel. Make people submit changes in Excel. Handle change tracking by writing VBA scripts to do change tracking in Excel.
There are many other ways to do this on a roll-your-own basis, of course - I set up a little SQL database, my client set up a little web-form for new submissions, and then we collaborated on getting the database to spit out a nicely tagged XML file, which we could then import into ID and auto-magically format. This workflow is usually really thorny, but because we controlled how the XML was tagged up, it went off without a hitch. Most XML-into-ID projects are not nearly so smooth, or so I've heard. But I've never needed to lift a finger to fix the XML, it's always been perfect, and I'm told by many that usually XML projects in ID require a bunch of XSL transformations to make data useable at all. But, once again, if you have the skills and tools, this is another DIY-content-management technique worth investigating. (But pay attention if John posts about XML->InDesign projects; his experiences have apparently been as frustrating as mine have been easy.)
TL;DR: Don't try to manage your content in InDesign. Get it out of your page layout tool into a container that makes sense, like a CMS, or a homebrew Filemaker database, or even Excel. <shudder>

  • How to link text-boxes in Pages 5.2?

How do you link text-boxes in Pages 5.2?

Thank you for your help; it is appreciated. I suspected that, but am still disappointed. I am finding myself getting more and more disenchanted with Apple products in the past few years. I've been a faithful fan, user and promoter since the 1980s, but I am starting to seriously doubt their competency in the past few years with the Pages 5 version as well as what iOS7 continues to do to my iPhone (as my prime examples). Instead of enhancing my life and work, Apple is beginning to waste my time -- a lot of it! Perhaps it is time for a change.... I don't want to, but I am starting to look for other alternatives.

    Hi,
IMG – Personnel Management – Personnel Admin – Tools – Revision – Set up change document:
    This node has three items:
    Infotypes to be logged
    Field Group Definitions
    Field Group Characteristics
Using these three options you define which infotypes you wish to log, then which fields, then you define which groups of fields are to be saved. Click each link, or see the sections below:
    Infotypes to be logged
Here you define which PA infotype numbers you require logging. Select New Entries and enter a transaction class (A for Pers Admin, B for recruitment), then enter the infotype number and save.
    Field Group Definition
When changes are made to a logged infotype, the field contents before and after are recorded. This is the very reason for logging the infotype, but there is an overhead in performance and disk space used so it needs to be given consideration. Typically you will want to record fields that are pay relevant.
Using the field group definition, you specify which fields you wish to record changes in. When any of the fields in the group are changed, all the fields in the group are saved. You can use an asterisk to log all the fields of the infotype but this is not recommended for space and performance, also there are many fields on an infotype that you will not be using, that will be saved also. Ideally you will pick individual fields of the infotype and enter them like so:
The field group number is a freely defined number you allocate to the group, it will be used in the next step. For normal use, simply pick any number not already used in that infotype. All fields with the same field group number are recorded in the log, even if they have not changed.
Click New Entries and enter the infotype number, field group number and field names that you wish to record.
    Field Group Characteristics
When you have set up the field group numbers, use the field group characteristics to activate the logging of those fields. You can also specify a supplementary field group; this means that the contents of another field group can also be saved at the same time, even though the contents have not changed. In practise it is not used much. Simply select new entries, enter the transaction class, infotype, and in the DocFieldGr enter the number you assigned to the field names that you want to store, then enter L for Long Term Documents (short are not supported)
    The Audit Report
To access the report showing the logged infotype changes, use the HR report tree available from various menu paths, including:
Main Menu – Human Resources – Pers Management – Administration – Info System – Reports - Documents – Infotype change – logged changes in infotype data. (RPUAUD00).
When you run the report, select the infotypes you require, and select and execute.
    Cheers

  • In WebHelp, when I mouse over a link, the font size changes.

Either after I generate to WebHelp or View in RoboHelp, when I mouse over a hyperlink text, the font changes from large to small text. My step is a 11pt font, my body text is 10pt. It appears the 11 pt. font switches to 10pt font when I mouse over it. Any way to fix this?
Also noticed that when I have a note at 9 pt, and mouse over a link, the text changes to 10pt.
So now it appears in most of my topics with links within a step or note. In a body, the text appears fine (or stays the same) when you mouse over a link.

    Not believing that either.
You should be able to edit your CSS in a text editor. If you are not sure what to do, set up a simple project using your CSS. Any text will do and create a link.
