Linux 3.12 and streaming media on a Dell XPS 13: kernel panic

Hi all,
Shortly after upgrading from Linux 3.11.6 to 3.12, I started getting kernel panics while playing streaming media (in particular from Youtube and The Daily Show). Here is a camera shot. The crash would not take place immediatly, but perhaps after 15 minutes of streaming. After downgrading to Linux 3.11.6 everything works fine. Therefore, it is clear to me that the issue is related to the Linux 3.12 kernel, but this is all I know.
The fifth-to-last line from the camera shot reads:
[11438.332699] RIP [<ffffffff8129e160>] __sg_page_iter_start+0x20/0x20
A quick Google search reveals that __sg_page_iter_start is a function inside the scatterlist.h library in the Linux kernel, which apparently deals with memory paging, but my knowledge about this stuff is so poor that the message is almost meaningless. I would greatly appreciate if someone could give me a hint about this.
I did not find anything useful in the journal, but here are the last few journal lines for 2 different crash instances:

In the first journal log, the following line calls my attention:
Nov 15 00:26:02 xps kernel: perf samples too long (2530 > 2500), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 50100
However, this seems to be a normal occurrence after playing games (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=170471), so I would guess this is not related to the kernel panic.
For reference, here are some hardware specifications of my Dell XPS 13:

Posted to [email protected], I hope I just haven't dawdled for too long and this can make it to 3.13 final.
Hopefully this should be sufficient information, I've linked to this thread too.  I've also mentioned I'm willing to beam one at someone from Amazon, with 2-day shipping to the USA the Pluggable branded adapter is just under NZD$40, which I can easily live with.
===========================================================================================================
USB3 gigabit ethernet adapters with the ASIX AX88179 chipset (LevelOne USB0401-V3, Plugable USB3-E1000, SIIG JU-NE0211-S1 and others) are experiencing kernel panics in usb_hcd_map_urb_for_dma since 3.12.  The issue does not seem to directly correlate with low or high network activity, occurring seemingly at random.  Some panics occurred less than 5 minutes from boot and tens of megabytes of network transfer, while on other occasions it would be stable for multiple days with tens to hundreds of gigabytes of line-rate throughput and several sleep/resume cycles.
Both my Sony Vaio Pro 13 and another user reporting this issue on the Arch forums [1] are Intel-based, my USB controller is an 8086:9c31 (Lynx Point LP), the other is reported as a C210/7 series (unknown PID).  A third with a Haswell Dell XPS has attempted my workaround and reports similar success.
I have a mediocre quality photo of my laptop's screen from one of these panics [2], the call trace - which is similar but not identical between my machine and that of the other user reporting the issue - is as follows:

So far as I can tell, the driver is unaffected as late as 3.11.6, but problematic as of 3.12 (and still affected in 3.13-rc5).  The history of drivers/net/usb/ax88179_178a.c for this time period yields this patch, which at least in my somewhat limited understanding appeared a likely candidate.  I've reverted this on my system - against several linux-next builds from the last 3-4 weeks - and have had no issues with this network controller since.
commit 3804fad45411b48233b48003e33a78f290d227c8

USBNET: ax88179_178a: enable tso if usb host supports sg dma
This patch enables 'can_dma_sg' flag for ax88179_178a device
if the attached host controller supports building packet from
discontinuous buffers(DMA SG is possible), so TSO can be enabled
and skb fragment buffers can be passed to usb stack via urb->sg
    directly.
With the patch, system CPU utilization decreased ~50% and throughput
increased by ~10% when doing iperf client test on one ARM A15 dual
    core board.

Unfortunately I have not retained the built kernel from a broken 3.12 build, so the system information below reflects the patched linux-next kernel I am running currently.
I understand this may be a somewhat obscure piece of hardware, I am willing to assist by drop-shipping one to someone from Amazon (or local country equivalent if the price is not extortionate) should it be required.

Can I connect 2 sony bravia's, a sony home theatre, 2 macbooks, 2 ipads, 3 iphones and a dell laptop and stream media from my apple devices to my tv? I have a sony bravia 600 series and 700 series and a home theatre( sony 7100 series)

The only way to stream directly to your TV would be if it is an AirPlay-enabled device.
There are many AirPlay-enabled devices but I am not familiar with Sony's products. If yours do not specifically indicate AirPlay capability, then you need an AirPlay-enabled device such as an AppleTV connected to your Sony TV or Sony AVR.

  • Comcast cable and streaming media

I just got Comcast cable access. Web browsing is super fast and email seems pretty smooth. BUT, I no longer can access internet radio thru iTunes, nor can I view or listen to any streaming media. BIG disappointment right off the bat. I've spoken to one Comcast support person who concluded it must be an Apple problem and told me to call them after checking out my connection and modem. I had Verizon DSL just 3 days before and everything worked beautifully.Network Utility returns a 100% failure when i ping a site most of the time, but then it works fine with 0% loss at other times. I'm going to contact Comcast again and talk to a different person.
    Any thoughts??

"BUT, I no longer can access internet radio thru iTunes, nor can I view or listen to any streaming media."
"I had Verizon DSL just 3 days before and everything worked beautifully."
Judging by the above, apparently some settings must have changed when you switched over to Comcast. Check your iTunes preference settings & the preference settings of whatever apps you use to view streaming media.
    Another thing you can try is this;
    Repair permissions.
    Shut off your computer.
Disconnect the cable modem from the power outlet for approximately 3 minutes.
Reconnect the cable modem & turn on the computer.
If none of the above works then recontact Comcast. However, this time ask/demand/be firm to speak w/a tier level 2 or 3 mac tech support. Make sure you get a case#.
Explain the problem to the tech in detail.
The Techs may have you unplug your modem like I explained previously. If they ask you if you already did this always tell them NO.
Sometimes, they may ping your modem. Depends on the situation.
Let them know how long you have been "having problems". Give them a date & remind them again about giving you a case # if they did not give you one in the beginning of the troubleshooting efforts.
This is where your case # comes in. You do not pay for internet cable service that you never receive. Your case # is your only proof. The Tier Level Techs will provide further instructions. They are the only ones who provide case #s. (Very Important if dealing with Comcast - for your personal records, make a note of the date & time of the call, techs name & location. They will only give out their 1st names. This will come in handy if there is a discrepancy in your bill/you did not get your credit.)
    Good Luck

  • A Kernel Panic and two Crashes since updating to 10.8.1

I've been running a 15" MacBook Pro (Mid 2009) for about a year and a half.  It's factory stock (no hardware modifications) with a 2.8 Core 2 Duo processor and 4gig RAM with a 500GB HD.  It came with 10.5 installed.  I upgraded to 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8 respectively.  Each time a new operating system came out, I did a clean install.  My system has been 100% reliable up until I installed the 10.8.1 update.  Since then, I've had a Kernel Panic and two separate crashes.
I doubt it's a hardware issue as it's never been suspect before.  Also, I've run Disk Utility and verified the disk and permissions.  No Problems there.
The first problem was the Kernel Panic, which occurred while I was in the guest account watching YouTube videos.  The system went to a gray screen then gave me the typical "Panic" message and rebooted itself.
The second problem must have occurred while the computer was in sleep mode, as I don't recall any particular issue, but I found a CRASH log in the logs folder.
Finally, I encountered the most recent crash while I was exiting out of the ADMIN account on my computer.  The system went to a gray screen with a rotating bezel indicator, and wouldn't return to the log-in screen.  I had to manually cycle the power button in order for the computer to reboot.
I'm not sure what's going on.

Hi. Since updating to 10.8 I've had numerous kernel panics on start-up. A restart always worked successfully, but it's getting annoying. I started out by replacing the HD with an SSD. That didn't work. Then I resent the PRAM/NVRAM. That seemed to work. Then I upgraded to 10.8.1 - and we're back to kernel panics.
Here's the log, and below it are photos of the initial kernel panic. :

  • _y_p_w - you out there? (re: DVD and kernel panics)

    Hey, y_pw,
Sorry for the public positing, but Apple's forums don't seem to give the option to send a message directly to someone.
Are you still kernel panic free on your MacBook with DVDs? I'm just curious, because you're the only report I have that doesn't seem to have the problem. Tonight I got a chance to try my RAM in a friend's 2.2 SR MacBook and after some work got it down to about 1.2GB of free RAM and sure enough got it to kernel panic on me.
After my logic board was replaced I went back to the Apple store and demonstrated that my MacBook still kernel paniced. The genius started running some X11 stuff and got a full system hang. Mouse still moved, but otherwise unresponsive. After reboot, log seemed to indicate hang due to graphics. I researched the issue a bit and found similar reports of some folks getting kernel panics with a flavor of Unix or linux also caused by the graphics driver with identical log entries as my system hang from X11.
It all seems to point to a driver issue, so I'm trying to figure out how you seem invulnerable.
    Thanks!

Well - I tried doing what I could to max out memory use. I've got a 2x2GB memory kit from OCZ. Right now Activity Monitor reports 1.15GB free, about 808 MB wired, 1.71 GB active, and about 325 MB inactive. I've got three web browsers active (each with CSTV's GameTracker loaded), as well as assorted Java and Flash ads on each browser. I'm running a high-def MPEG clip on VLC, about 60 photos loaded in Graphic Converter, and have the Office 2008 versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint open. iTunes is also continuously playing.
I'm also playing my Toy Story DVD using DVD Player version 5.0.1. I don't know, but I can't get it to crash. Some of the applications are ridiculously slow (VLC and DVD Player are dropping frames) and the fan is cranking at 6200 RPM. Still - everything is up even though I realize I've probably approached this machine's practical limits. Actually VLC just quit - probably because of all the dropped frames.
I don't know why, but the machine remains up and running. As I quite applications, everything seems to be approaching normal. I'm still using Safari and DVD Player still has Toy Story up.

  • Kernel Panic with new 2.6.24 and lx800

    Hello,
I'm going to type out the error that I'm getting, and hopefully someone can help me with my kernel panic.

If anyone could help me I would really appreciate it. This is on an embedded system, and I think it is due to the newest kernel? Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks, Jonny

This is fixed now as of 24.3-4 kernel in core.

  • IMac kernel panic -- rule out hardware and software! any ideas?

    Greetings forum
I am totally at a loss on what to do next. Im writing about a mid 2010 27 inch iMac recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. Shortly after this the computer started to experience issues of rebooting itself as clicking apps such as safari. So began the troubleshooting process!
First tried clean install -- ie format HD and internet recover install
everything installed fine and then restart issue again as it experience kernel panic
ruling out the Software I was convinced it was a memory hardware issue so I booked appt at genius bar and took it in-- the computer was there for 4 days and the tech said they did extensive testing and could find nothing wrong with the hardware tests!! and they had no advice other than to try a fresh install (again)
I took it home and let it sit for a couple of months as I didnt want to bother with it right away
So I pulled it out again yesterday and decided to do a fresh install after format -- again within 5 min in kernel panicd! This time i think I was searching in safari. BELOW is the crash report
I also decided to load up the diagnostic tool off my iMac disk to test hardware (did the extended test TWICE) and NO TROUBLE FOUND (see photo)

Hmmmm, what all is connected at home that wasn't at the Apple Store?
Does it ever crash when not using Safari or Internet?
Can you test your AC power?

  • Apple Magic Mouse and kernel panics?

I bought the new Apple Magic Mouse a few days ago and since day one I am getting random kernel panics. I've switched back to my old Apple Might Mouse and everything seems to work just fine.
    I am using a Macbook Pro 2.4MHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067MHz DDR3.
Apple's Magic Mouse was installed without the 'Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0', cause my MacBook Pro was already running Mac OS X Version 10.6.2 (without any kernel panics).
Here is one of the kernel's panic log file:

    Hello tom:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Be sure you have all the software updates installed:

If that does not help, I would contact Apple and ask for a replacement.

  • Kernel Panic and nothing I try works...

    Hy everybody!
Some days ago Kernel Panic appeard on my screen. I have an iBook G4 14" (2005) 512mb ram, 60gb harddrive. Since then I cant restart my computer. Everytime I try it comes again while loading the Software. I tried everything I could think of to make it work. I run the Hardware Test, nothing. I reinstalled the software 4 times! Nothing, I reset the pmu and all that stuff.. nothing really worked. Im at my end and I dont know what else I could do. Unfourtunatley I cant get the panic.log but I found, under Safe Mode, under Library/Log

That is the report my computer did as I started my laptop. Have no clue what that means. I hope somebody of you can help me because I really need my mac and I dont have money to buy me a new one..
I already wanna say thx to everybody who tries to help me

If there is nothing non-Apple connected or installed on the machine, and the hardware test tests OK, and you just erase and installed, the last possible cause of a kernel panic is RAM which has gone bad. RAM may go bad at anytime, and it is best replaced with high quality RAM. See my FAQ*:

  • Kernel Panics (AFPFS) when using airport discs AND user switching!

    Ok,
    I would love to see if anyone else has had this happen;
I can replicate this on 2 Mac Pro's we use:
We have airports discs (in accounts mode) connected, all works fine. However, IF one user does not log out, and another logs on (user switching) we will invariably get a Kernel Panic after some time (sometimes when putting to sleep or logging on, sometimes 'just'. This has not happened when airport discs are NOT MOUNTED, or befure using them (we are using the latest, just-updated software patch). Any suggestions?
The Panic log (with the memory dump removed) is below:

I don't have any solutions, but I had been reading about some folks having airport related kernel panics in the MacBook discussion forum. As a matter of fact, I had a kernel panic a little while back on my MacBook, and the crash log pointed to some issues with airport drivers. Here is what Macfixit says about these drivers and I quote:
"Bad built-in hardware (including hard drives) Repeated kernel panics can be the result of incompatible, damaged or misconfigured built-in hardware. This includes built in AirPort, Bluetooth and other networking hardware, corrupt or damaged hard drives, faulty processors and more. Examine your crash log (as discussed in our tutorial "An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports") for clues as to which device is implicated.
Sometimes the fix is as simple as re-seating built-in hardware. Make sure any PCI, PCI Express, AirPort and other expansion-type hardware is firmly and properly seated in its appropriate port.
In other cases, the fix involves attacking the problem at a driver or kernel extension level. Again, examine your crash reports and look for components specifically linked to certain hardware. For instance, the following Mac OS X components are all used by Apple AirPort hardware, and can be implicated (by crash logs) in kernel panics:
    com.apple.driver.AirPortAtheros5424(100.21)
    com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily(1.5.0)
    com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(1.9)
    com.apple.iokit.IO80211Family(110.19)
After determining device-specific components, you can try re-installing them -- either by performing an "Archive and Install" of Mac OS X, or downloading and manually placing items."

  • Logitech, Snow Leopard. and kernel panics: who's the culprit?

Up until this morning, I'd been considering this a Logitech issue, but their tech support just emailed me blaming Apple, so I'm posting it here.
With versions 3.1, 3.2, and now 3.3 of the Logitech Control Center (driver software for mice and keyboards), I've consistently seen kernel panics fly by my verbose login, always at odds with iokit:
    6/26/10 7:24:43 PM kernel dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(4.0.2)@0x8623d000
    6/26/10 7:24:43 PM kernel dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOHIDFamily(1.6.4)@0x85ff6000
    6/26/10 7:24:43 PM kernel dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBHIDDriver(4.0.2)@0x86865000
The computer always finishes starting up, and it doesn't appear to crash anything after it does so. That makes it more of a curiosity than a crisis, I suppose, but at the same time, no kernel panic is a good kernel panic, right? It has to be compromising the system in some way, so I'd like to get to the bottom of it.
I like Logitech products, so my theory was that the release of Snow Leopard a couple years ago had simply caught them off guard, and that they might need version or two to get their software to play nicely with 10.4. But the recently released 3.3 of the LCC generates the exact same panics.
So I emailed Logitech support. A charmingly named "Ms. Valentine" quickly responded, but embedded in form language, she told me to "Please contact you computer manufacturer, because this is Internal Fatal Error."
So 1) is this in fact an Apple problem, or the passing of a buck? and 2) whoever's to blame, is this kernel panic anything to worry about?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and theories.

Perhaps I should add some more detail. If you verbose login, the startup process is detailed in code on your screen. In this case, so many "backtrace (with dependencies)" cycles are detailed that they do indeed fly by. The full detail of each cycle:
6/27/10 12:59:52 PM kernel Trying to change a collection in the registry
    6/27/10 12:59:52 PM kernel Backtrace 0x4ff608 0x4ff3aa 0xa0269d 0x9f803a 0xa023ef 0xa023ac 0xa02e01
6/27/10 12:59:52 PM kernel Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
    6/27/10 12:59:52 PM kernel com.Logitech.Control Center.HID Driver(3.3.0)@0x9e9000->0xa13fff
    6/27/10 12:59:52 PM kernel dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(4.0.2)@0x976000
    6/27/10 12:59:52 PM kernel dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOHIDFamily(1.6.4)@0x9a7000
    6/27/10 12:59:52 PM kernel dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBHIDDriver(4.0.2)@0x9e3000
Most of the folks I've read discussing this issue have called this a kernel panic, but maybe they're using the term loosely.
In any case, the question remains: is this persistent issue an OSX one, or a Logitech one; and either way, is it compromising anything?

  • Lion and Parallels - kernel panics

I am currently on Lion 10.7.2 and Parallels 7 (latest build).  Within Parallels I am running Windows 7 SP1 64 bit.  This is a brand new MacBook Pro 2011 with i7 processor and I upgraded to 8gigs of RAM.  This was a fresh build of Windows 7.  Computer shipped with Lion (not an upgrade).
I am having the following symptoms:
Windows random reboot (sometimes bluescreen - no details in error log)
Mac random reboot - will be working and suddenly everything freezes and I am at the LogIn screen.
Kernel panics (panics are not consistently related to one process - sometimes it is parallels, sometimes it is a mac process)
    Following consistencies:
Parallels is open and booted to Windows 7
I am using some sort of graphics based app (could be a video conferencing app or a video game) - does not matter if I am using it on the Windows side or the Mac side
NOTE: I can consistently produce a kernel panic by starting to transcode a video with Handbrake and then playing video game on Windows side.  However, this is not the only time it panics.  Panics come intermittently in different situations but always when I am using some kind of graphics.
    Troubleshooting done so far:
I have totally uninstalled and reinstalled Parallels.
I have disabled automatic graphics switching.
I have run memtest to check RAM - seemed fine (passed all tests).
I have tried to run Hardware Diagnostic but cannot get it to run. Will not run with option D.  Copied .diagnostics from disk.  Option D would try to run it but would shut down computer.
I have changed graphics settings on Parallels.
I have spent two weeks going back and forth with Parallels support.  They think it is Mac based but I cannot ever force a kernel panic and have never seen a panic when Parallels is not running.
Apple has suggested taking it to store for hardware test (I am 70 miles away so this is not that easy).
Looking for any suggestions at this point..I have seen several others having kernel panic issues with Lion.  Has anyone found a solution?

ACTUALLY, I read the Parallels manual TWICE, looking for the missing step. It wasn't anywhere in the documentation provided with the software CD. You have to go digging through the online help functions to find it.
As for 'works perfectly', it's doing OK with everything but OpenGL functions so far. They are still working on getting those fixed.

  • Kernel Panic and inability to boot up

My 17" iMac, Intel Core Duo, 512 MB RAM has a kernel panic after I ran Tech Tool Platinum.
Everything was fine until TTPlat needed to reboot into the emergency partition "eDrive" so it can run whatever tests it needed to on the primary volume.
It refused to boot up, screen says something about a kernel panic, lots of other alphanumeric stuff, some references to "inability to find drivers" or something, "Backtrace failed", etc.
No method of booting succeeds. I tried safe boot mode, single user mode, verbose mode, even popped my Tiger install disk in and it didn't boot thru that. (Now it's stuck inide the CD drive). Even tried booting thru my external HD. Nothing.
Apparently it doen't accept keyboard command. I've ued 2 keyboard, a newer wireles one and an older beat-up cabled one.
    Thanks for any advice/assistance.

Thanks, BD, I will attempt that.
I am not sure how to disconnect the internal HD. Sounds like something that the Apple Store or Mac reseller a few miles away would have to do. This is approaching the (so far) limits of my "geek abilities" .
I have maybe a stupid question or theory: Could it be that my iMac is still attempting to boot into the Tech Tool eDrive, and that is why I am getting the kernel panic? Somewhere in my readings of my manual (Ted Landau's "Mac OS X Help Line, Tiger edition") and some online perusing I found some stuff re: insufficient memory and lack of drivers as a cause. If OS X 10.4.11 didn't complete the upgrade in the eDrive then perhaps some needed startup items just aren't there? Is that "fixed in place" as in it will keep attempting to boot into the eDrive until the issue is resolved, or will it somehow revert to its normal startup routine after some period of inactivity? (Again, sorry if that sounds stupid, or if I am using incorrect terminology. I am trying to learn. What I am finding out so far in my readings of the Mac's innards is fascinating. Once this is over I wanna dig into the UNIX command line. My intellectual curiosity is piqued.)
I will try your suggestion soon.

  • Occasional Kernel Panic and "invalid catalog btree depth info (4.1)"

My Mac is 6 years old, and is functioning OK in general. Occasionally in the morning I find my Mac making a loud noise coming from the fan, blank screen, and as told, it's one of those Kernel Panic crashes where I have to press the power button to shut down, wait 5-10 minutes and power up again to have my Mac get back to normal.
This has happened 3-4 times in the past couple months. Only one time it happened in front of my eyes, while surfing the net, when I suddenly watched the gray curtain coming down with a message to shut down and restart. Again, once I restart -- all is back to normal again...
This morning it happened again, which was disturbing, since just last night I performed my weekly Cocktail run.... This time I decided to do a few tests. I started up from the install CD, run Disk Utility -- all was OK.
I have an external drive, which is my back up and my HD's MIRROR (runs every Saturday morning, using Tri-Backup). So I restarted from that ext. drive, launched Drive Genius 2 to test my HD: ran the Repair utility > Verify --- and it FAILED ("invalid catalog btree depth info (4.1)"), as was the case with REPAIR or REBUILD, all failed.
When rebooting again from my internal HD, launching Drive Genius again, this time testing my ext., MIRRORED drive --- verification was successful.
The only difference between the 2 drives is, my internal drive is S.M.A.R.T-supported, while my ext. is not, if that makes any significance...
One more note:  For years now, any attempt to launch Disk Warrior (4.1) has failed.... It just would never complete the launching process (=crash)....
.......OK, that's my story, let's see how good you guys are.........
    Thanks!

Excuse my ignorance.... I have Console running, and I had launched DW. It crashed, as expected.
NOW:  where in Console do I go to get the information that would help figuring why DW has crashed, which of the logs should I select?
Under Logs > CrashReporter I have DiskWarrior.crash.log --- I see a report dated back 2006 (and of an older version of DW), full of "stuff".... I used the CLEAR button, everything was deleted, and today's date showed up on the top, but no report is showing up... Even after I Forced-Quit DW, no report is showing.
When I clicked on another log, and then came back to DW's crash.log -- the same old report from 2006 shows up again...
So clearly this NEW report I should look elsewhere...

  • Streaming media from wireless external hard drive and MBP to TV?

Hi everyone. I have a retina MBP and have recently bought a Sony Bravia smart tv with wireless. I have a time machine (the new one) with an external hard drive connected to it with all my media, photo, movies etc. My tv is connected to my wireless from the time machine and I'm wondering how do I stream media from my external hard drive to my tv? And how do I stream media from my MBP to my tv wirelessly? I can't seem to figure it out. Also mirroring my MBP desktop to my tv wirelessly, can it be done without an apple tv? Thanks in advance.

I had the same issue. It was due to the appalling performance of the USB connection to the disk, not any issue with the wireless connection itself. My iMac was within 7m of the router, on the same floor, with a clear line of sight and good reported connection speed. I have the latest late-2009 version of the AEBS running the 7.5 firmware. This has loads of performance problems (read these forums). I'm hoping that Apple will release the new firmware (7.51) for download soon and then the issue may be resolved.
