Linux Apache /Tomcat - JSP

Hi,
I am very new to the Apache/Tomcat world (and Linux for that matter).... what I have is RedHat 9
Apache version 2.0.40-21 (pre-loaded with RH9)
is this enough for running JSP with database connectivity. or tomcat also required.
help me

Yes Tomcat and Apache can run on the same server as long as they are both configured to do so. IE: You could have apache serve all the static files (html, images, etc.) and then have Tomcat just serve the JSP/Java side of the web application.
This config tends to perform better because if I'm correct Tomcat handles HTML and image requests slower than apache does (or did they fix that?).
As for the ports, if I'm right the default port on Apache is 80 and Tomcat is 8080.

Possible to connect remotely to Apache TomCat JSP application server

Hi, I've just installed an Apache TomCat server and locally playing around with some JSP and Servlets.
I have an website which is hosted remotely by an hosting company.However they do not provide JSP/Servlets server as an service.
I want to know is it possible to add some code or something which connects to my JSP/Servlet TomCat server remotely. So, allowing me to add JSP code or Servlets to say my index.html at my website host location which then connects from their to my TomCat server JVM and spit the goods back out at my website location.
Is this possible? seems quite awkard?

You are certainly not in an ideal situation. While you could use AJAX, and a library like DWR to send requests between the hosted website and whatever JSP/Servlet engine you have available, the resulting application will likely be slower and less reliable than if you hosted it all in the same place. Realistically, you won't save yourself any effort by doing it this way. Application hosting is a lot more resource-intensive than hosting static content, and even more so due to the amount of abuse that goes on in the wild Internet.
While you've solved the problem temporarily, your JSP/Servlet engine is still vulnerable to DoS-based attacks once it's determined where your AJAX servlets reside. The only long-term solution is to go with a provider that has proper JSP hosting that is known to have good security.

Unable to compile class for JSP. apache-tomcat-6. What could be wrong?

Hello, I am new to JSP and I am trying a very basic jsp and class file on Windows XP. I get the Unable to compile class for JSP.
Steps that I have done:
javac ch06_01.java , placed the ch06_01.class under
C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16\webapps\ch06\WEB-INF\classes
Then grabbed the ch06_02.jsp and placed it under
C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16\webapps\ch06\
When I run it (by placing this into Explorer or Firefox URL
http://localhost:8080/ch06/ch06_02.jsp) I get the error further
below. Things I have done and made sure they are in place are:
set up JAVA_HOME to C:\Apps\jdk1.6.0_06
Using CATALINA_BASE: C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16
Using CATALINA_HOME: C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16\temp
Using JRE_HOME: C:\Apps\jre1.6.0_06
I did a google on the error and I found people saying to place the
tools.jar from the jsk into the lib directory under CATALINA_HOME. But
the examples still don't work. What step could I be missing? Your help is greatly
appreciated.

I just updated the directories of the variables to reflect the current status of my system.

What is wrong is that you are using an "old" jsp tutorial :-)
Since Java 1.4, JSPs have been unable to access classes in the "default" package.
What you need to do:
Put the java class ch06_01 in a package.
Steps to do this
- Edit ch06_01 and add the following to the very top of the file (without the quotes): "package mypackage;"
- create a folder "mypackage"
- move ch06_01.java into that folder
- compile that class (now in the mypackage package)
- place ch06_01.class under C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16\webapps\ch06\WEB-INF\classes\mypackage
In your jsp:
<%@ page import="mypackage.ch06_01" %>
I would suggest using a more up-to-date tutorial that uses JSTL.

Problem accessing exception object in jsp error page - Apache Tomcat 5.0.25

Hi all,
I'm thoroughly confused and need some help. I've deployed a very simple web application in Apache Tomcat 5.0.25 to test exception handling - errortest.jsp and error.jsp. errortest.jsp throws a divide by zero exception if executed with default values in text fields.
When I put the directive IsErrorPage="true" in error.jsp i get a HTTP 500 error when error.jsp is accessed. If I remove it error.jsp is displayed but I cant access the exception object - if I try to I get an exception below:

create a dir under webapps dir
place your .html and .jsp files here
also create WEB-INF dir here
Under WEB-INF create classes and lib dir
under classes dir put your .class file
You also need to put web.xml under your WEB-INF dir.
You ca keep your java file any where u want on your computer.

Problem connecting oracle database to jsp pages using Apache Tomcat server 8.0

Well...I tried too many things..googled so many times..but still could not find solution to my problem.
I use windows 8 Enterprise Edition(if this has to do something with the problem)

My oracle is installed in the D: drive and tomcat in c:. i copied the ojdbc6.jar file from oracle to lib directory of tomcat server.

Can't fix a problem 'till an actual problem is identified.

That appears to be ODBC drivers looking for a DSN (Data Set Name). If it wants a DSN, the DSN has to be specified in the code, and the DSN has to be configured in the windows host ODBC applet. So that is at least two squirrels to get in the right tree before moving forward. A ...host:...[port:]SID|service name are some of the bits needed in a jdbc connect string, and that is in no way related to DSNs. A Whole Different Animal. If it wants a DSN that might be what needs to go in the URL bit.
And ODBC setups can be confusing, especially if an x64 OS is in the mix- if that is the case there are two different ODBC configuration applets, one for x64 the other for x86, and if one gets as far as talking to an actual database it might toss an architecture error. Only way to fix that "problem" is *delete* the ODBC DSN and then run the correct (maybe the x86) ODBC config utility, and set up the DSN. Again.

My guess would be this is an old tutorial.
As of Java 1.4, classes not in a package won't work in Tomcat JSP pages.
You need to put your UserData class in a package:
package mypackage;
public class UserData{ ....This would then compile into
/WEB-INF/classes/mypackage/UserData.class
And in your web page you would need
<%@ page import="mypackage.*" %>

JSP Apache-Tomcat

I have a problem running a JSP program in a second PC.
In the first PC I am running Apache-Tomcat and I execute the program with this command in a browser:
http://localhost:8080/jspexamples/myJSPs/almacen/Venta01.jsp
It works OK.
I also have the C:\jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28 as a shared folder and I turn off the firewalls.
In the second PC I am trying to run the same program using this command in the browser:
http://192.168.15.5/jspexamples/myJSPs/almacen/Venta01.jsp
This 192.168.15.5 is the IP address of the server PC (first PC), which is running the Apache-Tomcat. The program does not run.
P.D.: The program is in the first PC in the folder:
C:\jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28\webapps\jspexamples\myJSPs\almacen

When you create web application, it should be placed in separate. The default place is ${CATALINA_BASE}\webapps. Do not add your jsps in existing application (jspexamples in this case).
I also have the C:\jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28 as a shared folder and I turn off the firewalls.This folder can be (and should be) unshared. Tomcat listens port 8080 (by default configuation), you can turn on your firewall, allow connections for 8080 port and all will work! (at least, all can work in theory :) )

JSP & Apache Tomcat &hsqldb

HI every one,please be patient while reading this message.
I installed apache tomcat and created a database by hsqldb.i want to work with this database from my JSP files.i read the documentation of hsqldb and they say that the best mode or the official one is to run the servlet server(as you know there are five modes of server).and they say that the servlet engine(Apache in this case) is responsible for lanching this servlet server.How can i run it and solve this problem.

I had seen ur jsp page , can i tell u one thing , never write a connection in the jsp page, why becoz the code can be seen.
ok here the problem is ur getting the username and password and putting an if condition inside the while loop so this throws an error.
anyway ur getting the values like
while (rs.next())
Username1 = rs.getString("Username");
Password1 = rs.getString("Password");
now the username and password are already retrived from server side, just do the check now outside the loop.

Apache & Tomcat relations

Hi
I would like to know what are the relations between Apache & Tomcat.
I know Apache is HTTP server and Tomcat is a jsp container.
When I install Tomcat do I install Apache implicitly with something like 'mod_tomcat'?

Hi,
I'll give you my pennysworth , though my knowledge is still very limited. You can use various ways of linking tomcat and apache. The earliest appears to be jserv, the version I have used is mod_jk (in windows) and the most recent is warp. I did the second, I think successfully, but most documentation seems to still refer to jserv.
I also know warp is workableable, but I haven't managed that myself yet.
What difference does it mean?
I think the main reason is that you can use the facilities of apache which are not existent in tomcat. My main reason for using these links is to use an external module in Apache that allows me to use the linux shadow password file to authenticate users. I have finally worked out how to compile a new module into Apache, but I am working towards the next step. Learning the basics is probably the hardest thing, I reckon.
Post another question, I'll happily answer at my limited expertise.
I have asked SUN to start a forum for apache, I think they should.

Now, the point is the JSP is failing to load the Applet in the web browser.
I have followed this deployment structure.
Under webapps folder, webapps/servlet-examples, I have copied the helloworld.jsp.
Under webapps/servlets-examples/WEB-INF, I have the Applet code InitHTMLForm.class.
The web.xml is under the webapps/servlets-examples/WEB-INF.

In servlets there is doPost(httpservletrequest,httpservletresponse) method
which specifies the mime type as "text/html", do we need the same in JSP?
Anyhow the html page should be accessed.
Please help me out.

1) Check if the Applet Code is placed in the correct folder. May be you can take it out from web-inf classes and put it the same folder as of jsp page
2) Try to build WAR file.Place the WAR file in Tomcat Web-apps directory. That solves many problems.

Unable to resolve Apache-Tomcat after 5.0.2 Upgrade / Content Server Install

I recently upgraded from 5.0.1 to 5.0.2. With 5.0.1, I was able to resolve to http://<apache-tomcat.domain.com>:8080 as well as http://<apache-tomcat.domain.com>:8080/ptcsand http://<apache-tomcat.domain.com>:8080/ptcs/diagnosticsTest.jsp. However, after upgrading to 5.0.2, I am unable to resolve to any of these URLs. The 'Content Server' admin. folder shows up within the admin. ui and all necessary objects are there. Other than the upgrade, no other changes were made to the server. Any suggestions? Thanks.

library files of JSF ("jsf-api.jar", "jsf-impl.jar" and "jstl.jar") at "apache-tomcat-5.5.17\common\lib" also i tried by placing these at "apache-tomcat-5.5.17\webapps\MyProject\WEB-INF\lib"
Please help me out here...

Maybe your web.xml is wrong. Doublecheck it.
