I have to install Oracle on a Linux Box.
This is My OS:

I am not sure if there is any kind of mirroring or RAID in this machine.

Now total disk space shown in any of the command is not more than *293 GB* MAX. How can i find the other disk space? Like total physical disk are *143*3*
How to check that the rest disk space is either not mount, or doesn't have any file system on it, or it is used in the raid or mirroring.
I am very confused regarding this. Kindly help in details and If you require the result of any command please let me know.

/dev/cciss is typical for HP Smart Array RAID controllers. You will need to enter the the controller setup at system start up and check your setup. There is usually a message printed how to enter the controller BIOS. Usable disk space after formatting a drive is generally lower than the capacity of the drive, usually the larger the partition, the higher the value that is "wasted".

I have a late 2008 Mac Pro, and every so often, if I don't take the time to Defragment my startup drive, or go over it with Disk Warrior, my partition takes a dump. Normally its a invalid file count, invalid directory count, invalid volume structure, or some combination in between. I don't think its the drive or the mac itself (at work we have 200+ macs of various years and models that do this too) since it only happens to the startup drive (1TB-56% full) and I've had apple replace them 2 times now, along with a replacement machine and it still happens. I was wondering if the GUID would be happier on a new 4096 byte sector drive assuming the mac would even be able to use it. Buried deep in the developer site is a tec note that says Mac OS 10.4 and up are able to use the drive, but I haven't been able to find out if anyone outside of Western Digital has actually used them on a mac yet. No one at AppleCare seems to have an answer to my question, or can explain why my map fails regardless of drive.

BOOT DRIVE ADVICE for MAC PRO. How Big and Partition Size

So new new Mac Pro (Quad) arrives this week.
I'm doing a drive just for BOOT and another drive (or drives) for data.
The big question is, what size drive should I buy for just BOOT/OS/APPLICATIONS and how much of it should I partition. I want to install everything on the boot drive to be on the outside area of the disc and ignore the inside.... So, do I get a 300GB drive and partition 100GB to use as the boot partition and ignore the rest?
Any advise would be helpful!

If you have Final Cut, X-Plane and such, you'll find even 150GB to be small. You want to have plenty of free space for burning DVD-DL, temp space for programs and files, and so that free space never gets too highly fragmented.
A 200GB partition on a 640GB drive seems to be a good choice and it will still maintain 80MB/sec. Still use the rest as an alternate for your data (put it on a sparse disk image).
10K Raptor 300GB (Amazon, $229) is a nice, fast boot drive if you really need it, though most 640GB drives are more than adequate for most people.
If you plan to install Windows, I'd dedicate a drive just for that purpose and not use your boot drive. Not sure if "BOOT" meant just OS/Apps or more.

Sun SCA6000 Linux driver occasional stalls

It seems that occasionally, in some (yet unknown) circumstances the card's kernel driver stalls and rebooting the server seems to be the only way to get the driver working again. We suspect that this is somehow related to the SCA6000 Linux driver and how it works in an SMP environment. As a workaround, we have disabled multiprocessing in our server by setting maxcpus=1 in our GRUB configuration. So far the issue hasn't re-occurred, but it's not sure whether this workaround helps or not, because the issue has occurred earlier very rarely.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?

As a follow-up, incase anyone else is wondering:
I purchased a couple 92mm quiet Zalman fans. Then had a friend solder the connectors (I'd have soldered my own hand to it) from the original Nidec fans from both the power supply and CPU fan shroud and re-installed them. In the process, I cleaned out most of the dust from the system, and put a dust filter in between the plastic front panel and the metal case. Everything seems fine now:

After the old fans were pulled, I plugged them both into a 12V power supply, and they were making quite a racket, as well as showing very unstable current draw. Probably very good that I replaced them before they stopped completely
The new fans don't move quite as much air as the original ones, but I couldn't find a listing for the air volume of the originals, as those particular models aren't manufactured by Nidec anymore. And apparently the U60 does not support any kind of temperature monitoring: lm-sensors found i2c-ipmi and bmcsensors interfaces, but there's nothing behind them. And prtconf doesn't report any thermal monitoring equipment either. The harddrives are sitting at around 38 degrees C, so the fans appear to be doing their jobs.
So, if anyone else is wondering: yes, you can replace bad fans in an sun sparc U60 powersupply and CPU shroud with quiet off-the-shelf PC fans, with a bit of rewiring (don't forget to clamp the white sensor cable).

How do I replace my internal hard drive and not lose windows partition?

I am wanting to swap my internal hard drive out for a larger one. What do I do about my windows partition? I only use boot camp, and there is some stuff on my windows side I don't want to lose. I know how to make a clone for OSX, and I know how to replace the actual hard drive, it's just the windows that I am a little sketchy on.

Pull your hard drive and put it in external case, OWC sells such kits, you could probably use a good windows clone program too.
but you need room on an (external) hard drive to hold the Windows image (uses a sparse disk image file is all).
Paragon Software has been busy releasing programs and updates to help Mac users running Windows, using NTFS (and EXT2/3), as well as CampTune (free for now) for resizing Windows or linux boot camp partitions.

Format and partition external drive if you want dual use Mac / PC

I had purchased from the Apple store in France a portable hard drive Iomega eGO USB 2.0/FireWire ov 250 Go capacity (P/N 31713900; Model: RPHD-C; S/N: FEAJ02011V)
Originally formatted HFS+, it would mount on any of my Mac desktops with Firewire, easily on the iMac using USB and with great difficulty on the iBook with the two USB plugs (together). It did not mount on any windows PC I had used for tests (so reformatting it FAT(32) or NTFS was *not an option).
I had reformatted it FAT32 using the iMac under mac OS 10.5 for use on multiple computers including Windows PC's. The drive would now accept to:
Mount on the iMac and iBook using Firewire
Mount on the iMac using USB, but it will NOT:
1 - Mount on the iBook using USB, nor
2 - Mount on any Windows PC using USB
The solution was found at the office with our IT helpdesk.
Whether I format it FAT 32 or NTFS (using the Paragon NTFS for mac OS X 10.5) on my iMac under OS 10.5, including when I do the same on another external drive than the Iomega, the PC would not recognise it while it would always mount on a Mac and it was even impossible on the PC to reformat it. The solution is (at least in windows world), you need to (1) format the drive, AND (2) partition the drive, even if this involves creating a single partition. Using Disk Utility of the Mac, I had only formatted the drive and not partitioned it into a single partition and Disk utility did not request that from me. The drive as prepared was perfectly usable on any Mac anyway.
The cure was to go back to the imac which had formatted it, mount it (it mounts), (1) reformat and (2) partition, using a single partition.
Then, the drive would instantly be recognised on the PC as a F drive, whether under FAT 32 or under NTFS.
The blame is in me and on the Apple Drive utility which did not help me (trust it would have been worse in windows world, but this is a bad mark on disk utility)
My suggestion to Apple would be that Disk Utilisty should tell us, once we have formatted a drive (HFS+, FAT 32 or NTFS using Parangon) that we are not done yet and still must create the partition(s), even if we only need one partition.

Can I use Time Machine to backup to partition on external drive and a Time Capsule?

Trying to plan in advance...
I was wondering if I can (with a laptop) use Time Machine for both:
1. Creating Time Machine backups on a partiion of an external drive. My plan was going to create 2 partitions: one to be used for Time Machine backups of another external hard drive (that holds all of my media) and then the other partition was going to be a bootable clone of my internal drive (totally separate from Time Machine)
and
2. Also use Time Machine for my Time Capsule, to create Time Machine backups of my internal drive.
Is this possible? I had heard that you can't use TM to make backups to a partition on an external drive, AND use it for another drive (like Time Capsule) at the same time. But I would think that this should be possible-

Yes you can, and if you are using Mountain Lion it's easy.
If you are using Snow Leopard (as in your profile - this is the Mountain Lion forum), you have to manually select the backup volume each time. Tedious, but possible.

so... first of all ... i have to say ... i'm still a pc user ... i don't have a Mac ... yet ... they are sold out right now in the shops near me ... i am waitting for them to arrive so i can pick up mine ... (i wish in a couple of days i will be entering the Mac world ....) ... i'll be picking the "entery" iMac model, the 21,5'', i5 with 500gb hard disk ... well .. i know it's the cheapest one (i hope it is a good machine tho) ... but it's my entering Mac world too (my only apple products till know were the ipod ...) ... one of my concerns are being the 500gb hard drive ... that for my pc experience is a little bit short ... that makes me a little scared (but paying 300e for the next model to have a 1tb disk, it's not a good option for me right now) ...

I've been reading a lot about iMac's ans OS X so i can get familiar with this all new world ...
and i couldn't get any answer for some of my doubts... so i decided to ask you Mac Users ..
My idea is to have an external HD to store files (and not to fill the 500gb of the iMac) ... and i am wondering if it would be possible to make this ...
- make three partitions on the external Hard Drive and
- the first be formatted in Mac OS extended (journaled) mode
- the second on fat 32 - so i can store and share files with a mac or pc
- third be reserved for Time Machine
i wonder would that be possible... or would make sort of incompabilities ... would it work all well ?

Can I partition a 1tb hard drive and also run time machine on that hard drive

I have a 1TB external hard drive which s currently running for Time machine only.
I was hoping to be able to partition the EHD so that 500GB would be for the Time Machine side and the other 500GB would be used as an ecternal storage [ a friend of mine has just lent me a 250gb hard drive with a load of tv series which i want to be able to copy].
Can anyone tell me if this is possible and if so how do i do it.
I know that Time Machine is running now but I don't mind starting all over again.

Yes it is possible, but it is generally not a good idea. That being said, if you decide to use the EHD for another purpose, partitioning it is the best solution. How big is your internal HD? It is recommended for a TM partition to be 2X as large as your internal drive, and it must be at least the size of your internal HD in order to be used.
In order to partition:
1) Connect the EHD
2) Open Disk Utility and select the drive
3) Click the "partition" tab and drag the original partition to its desired size.
4) Click "Apply" to create the secondary partition.
Resizing the TM partition will not erase it.

I don't know first hand if you can use the Remote Disk option with Windows but as of 10.7.2 you can now use BCAssistant to make a bootable USB (thumb drive or external disk) W7 installer with the Boot Camp drivers installed also. Have you tried that yet?

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

Drive Partition causing issues after new hard drive and recovery disks installed

I have an HP Pavilion Media Center PC m7640n running Windows XP Media Center Edition.
My hard drive failed and I had a computer guy install a 1 TB Hard drive as well as additional memory. I purchased the recovery disks and he installed everything for me. I have two issues:
1. After updating to XP Service Pack 3 and all other Windows recommended upgrades the computer deleted all my drivers and would not "plug and play" install anything. I had the computer guy back to fix this--he did get all my drivers to work, but when I plug in anything new for the first time (such as my iPad), I have to go into the device manager and manually update the drivers. The computer doesn't recognize it and automatically prompt me to install it.
2. The hard drive partition defaulted to my C drive being very small and my D drive being large. Since software usually defaults to the C drive for installation, I quickly ran out of space. I had the computer guy back and he programmed something so that everything now defaults to the D drive. Unfortunately all my program files (including Microsoft Office) are still on my C drive including everything I put on my desktop. My C drive is now full.
Here is an example: iTunes shows that it is defaulting to the D drive for anything I load into it. Yet I tried to download the new operating system for my iPad and it said my hard drive was full. When I did a file search to see what files had changed in the last week, it shows iTunes on my C drive (and my D drive). Yet all the files that were "changed" due to my upgrade were defaulting to the C drive, even though in the setting in iTunes it shows it should be saving to the D drive.

Is there an easy way to fix these issues? I've already spent more than I anticipated when I chose to rebuild this computer vs buying a new one. Now I'm regretting the decision and I'd like to try and fix this myself and not pay my computer guy to come back at $90/hour.

Here are the original specs of your computer. The specs state that the original hard drive was 320GB. You have since replaced the factory drive with a 1TB (1000GB) hard drive. The HP recovery routine seems to have issues with hard drives that deviate from the original size. The partition issues you are experiencing may be a result of this. As for the rest of your issues, it sounds like the SP3 install went bad.
If I were you, I would consider reinstalling the OS using your recovery discs by doing a complete "destructive" reinstall/recovery. Afterward, I would post the size of both the c: and d: partitions... and go from there.

No more optical drive and windows 8 issue: "Windows cannot be installed on this disk as it has an MBR partition table."

I have an Early 2011 13" MBP going strong with an SSD and original HDD installed in the optical drive. However, having had success with windows 7 on my old HDD I was planning to install Windows 8.1 (from .iso) on my SSD. However, for the past day or so it's been a nightmare.
I tried the official procedure but by editing the bootcamp info.plist so I could boot from USB (you can't install windows from an external optical drive apparently) partitioning as bootcamp wanted too.
I then tried it a number of different ways using disk utility etc and with an empty space
However, I always seem to end up with the error "“Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only installed on GPT disks“

"Windows 7 and 8 in x64 support EFI. Normally if you install Windows on a Mac and use the installation DVD, it boots into regular BIOS mode, thus can be installed on an MBR partition. The Bootcamp wizard is aware of this, and creates a GPT partition on a non-superdrive Mac but an MBR partition on a superdrive Mac."
This means Bootcamp is essentially making the wrong type of partition?
My real question is? How do I install it windows 8? I'm really on my last legs!
I really don't want to have to open this thing up and reinsert my optical drive as its really really difficult to get out of the enclosure (would probably have to break it).

You also could use this commands to check and install again:
Inside windows installer, hit Shift+F10 to get a command prompt, then run diskpart and type List disk to displays a list of disks and information about them, such as their size, amount of available free space, whether the disk is a basic or dynamic disk,
and whether the disk uses the master boot record (MBR) or GUID partition table (GPT) partition style.
and then select the target disk. Zap the drive (with the clean command), create GPT table (new gpt), create the GPT-EFI special partitions.

Then reboot so the firmware finds those partitions and adds the disk to the EFI-native boot order (Windows installer checks this).

How to create up-to-date Recovery Drive and Recovery Partition on Windows 8.1 U1.

I am running 8.1 and exploring the recovery options.
I'm periodically creating recovery images, etc. but would like to do better than that.
I'd like to know how to:
Create an updated Recovery Partition that will restore to a Recovery Image (WIM) that I choose.
Modify / Create a Recovery Drive that includes a system image
of my choice, as opposed to an image created by the manufacturer / supplier (and the extra work that that implies). If I can create an up to date partition and mark it as such, then I'm clearly done. Should I not be able to sensibly
make my own partition, how do I create this on a USB recovery drive? (The built in interface has a Boolean option, use hard drive recovery partition OR use nothing. This would be solved if it
also had an option to use current recovery image. I'm happy to write simple code to make this happen if that's what it takes.)
Put another way. I can make a recovery image at will, how do I create a recovery partition and recovery drive to match?
I'm no expert on the ins and outs of Windows 8.1 recovery, if this is already covered elsewhere, I'd appreciate a link.

here. However, if I read your post correctly you are suggesting being able to do this from USB media. The method for creating the recovery partition is simple. It is simply a partition containing a folder called RecoveryImage with your install.wim
inside. Reagentc is the tool that will actually tell Windows where that recovery is. While I don't personally have a use for what your suggesting, I may give it a shot just to see if it can be done. I suspect it will work.
