Lion crashes if Time Machine is enabled

The issue:
When I enable Time machine, Lion's finder constantly crashes. It changes the cursor to this nice rotating rainbow and you can't do anything. Pressing the power button bring up the shutdown menu, bun the shutdown or restart never happenes. Relaunching finder etc,... is all worthless.
How it happenes:
It happenes on different occasions, always in connection to the file system. When you empty trash, try to delete some files, copy them,...etc.
How often:
All the time, you nearly can't use the system for more then 5 min.
The hardware:
I have a Macbook PRO (2008), Core2duo 2.53 Mhz, 4GB of ram
Lion with all software updates
Time capsule
It took me weeks to find out that Time machine is to blame. The same setup worked flawlessly on Snow leopard. I went through Time campsule and Time machine settings several times and it all looks perfect. I can normaly access time capsule, its folders or backups.
Any ideas?
THANKS

So far so good, however, it starts the backup and then just hangs. I have left it for hours and it doens't come good.
I realise this person's problem is solved but I have the same issue. I also initialised the external disk and tried it again, same result.
No, you don't.   The Finder on your Mac is not crashing, even when a backup is not running.
You're having some sort of OSX problem and a backup problem.  The two may or may not be related.
You need to start a new thread, with details of your issue.
If the hangs happen when no backup is running, that's likely the main problem -- fix that and the backups may work fine.  So post that problem first, with as much detail as possible about when it hangs -- is there a particular app that always seems to be running, or does it happen when you try to do a particular thing?  Have you run both Repair Disk Permissions and Verify Disk on your HD per #5 and #6 in Using Disk Utility?  How much free space is on your HD?
If the hang happens only when a backup is running, post that problem.  Please specify where it's hanging -- what's shown on the TM Prefs panel?  Is it in the "Preparing" phase, or has it started copying ("xxx GB of yyy GB"), or does it show "Cleaning up" or "Indexing" or what?
Also, what partition map scheme does the external HD have?  If it's not GUID, that could be the problem -- if not, reformat it per #1 in Using Disk Utility.

You can with a Snow Leopard DVD, but if you don't have that or a Time Machine backup there's no way.

  • Imac keeps crashing in time machine backup after upgrade to mountain lion

2008 imac kept crashing (shutdown and restart) during first backup after upgraded to mountain lion. The backup size was about 10GB but time machine crashed after a while (at most 2GB) and never completed backup. So, I don't have any backup since right before I upgraded from Lion. Any suggestion?

Something strange happened. I was able to get time machine to work by going out to the login screen (the account kept logged in) and let it run the backup with the screen off (screen auto off after a few min). I tried it on two different external drives and that did the trick on both. Since the initial Mountain Lion backup was huge (155 GB), I was quite surprise that it worked at all. I assume your MBP was a Lion to ML. I also just did a 2012 MBP upgrade but that one was smoother. I did not recall having crashing issue. One thing I did find during this was that my WD passport USB drive was corrupted. Not sure it was the cause or not. I had to erase and reformat to get it back to work. Maybe do a verify disk to confirm. Good luck.

  • Spotlight fails to load, constantly crashes after Time Machine restore

    Problem description:
After having made the mistake of running a Unix command that altered more files than I intended and possibly damaged the file system, I decided to restore to a previous state with Time Machine. (By the way I am running Yosemite.)
Evidently, something was corrupted with the latest backup, since the system said it couldn’t restore every time I tried to use it. But I succeeded with the second newest backup.
Since the restoration, the Spotlight icon has disappeared from the corner of the menu bar, and cannot be activated with keyboard shortcuts. The same problem exists whether I start in safe mode or from a fresh account.
The .app file still exists in CoreServices, and indexing appears to continue, as I am able to conduct searches through finder windows. I have tried emptying all the caches, restarting SystemUIServer and the menubar itself.
I have never, to my knowledge, instructed an application or the computer to hide Spotlight from the menubar. And though I doubt this is the issue, it is interesting that when I select in Onyx the option to hide it, and then deselect it, there’s a short little flash in the corner where the icon should be as if it tries to start for a moment but for whatever reason crashes.
It appears from the console that every second it is trying to load when this happens:

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • Mail 5.3 crash after Time Machine migration

    All,
I'm facing a problem with Mail 5.3 while trying to recover my email db from Time Machine after an update of MacOS.
Here the following steps I made to perform this update:
Update my iMac from SL to Lion 10.7.1 using the clean install way.
    Install last 10.7.5 combo update.
Perform migration of content and system preferences from my last Time Machine backup before the upgrade (using the Migration wizard)
    Finally, run Mail.
After having performed the email db conversion (without any error message), Mail seems to crash since no main window appears in the application.
I need to force the application to show the main window with the dedicated command of the Window menu.
But the result is not what we should expect !
Please check the snapshot herein attached.
While looking at the console, it seems that an error occurs during the execution of Mail, with the following error message and code :
29/10/12 08:30:37,835 Mail: An exception occurred during invocation of -[MailboxesController _writeSmartMailboxesToDisk]
29/10/12 08:30:37,836 Mail: *** -[NSSet initWithArray:range:copyItems:]: array argument is not an NSArray
Is there any member of this community who could have an idea what's wrong with this ?
    Thanks,
    Michel

Some progress on this issue to share with you.
First, Mail.app on the others user account was fine and I managed to successfully perform the migration from Time Machine.
This led to the point that the problem was relying on the Mail DB rather on the Mail.app itself.
I have reinitialised the Mail.app on the user account where the problem occured using the following guidelines:
    - access to the Library folder using the [Alt]+[Goto Menu] of the Finder
    - rename Mail and Mail Downloads folders into Mail.old and Mail Downloads.old
    - delete com.apple.mail.plist and all com.apple.mail... files in the Preferences folder
    Then, start the Mail.app again
Mail.app has been reinitialised completely !

  • OS X Lion, NFS shares, Time Machine?

A few years ago I bought a Mac Mini server. I wanted to use it as a storage server using attached drives. I got everything up and running but kept running into the same problem: The NFS server deamon would stop / crash for no apparent reason when I was writing large files to the server over NFS.
I spent some time troubleshooting the issue but never resolved it and eventually resorted to wiping out OS X on the Mac Mini server an install CentOS Linux instead. The NFS deamon here is rock solid and I have used it ever since.
Fast forward to today where my Time Capsule died due to the usual power supply failures (thanks to Apple for a crappy design). I then realized that I could use my Mac Mini Server as a host for Time Machine, I'd just need to get it running OS X Server again. I would still want to serve writeable NFS shares so this leads to my question:
Does anyone know for sure whether OS X Mountain Lion has had any improvements to the NFS deamon over previous versions? I'd be quite happy to buy the new OS, but I'd prefer to be a little more confident that all the work would pay off (in the form of a stable NFS service)

The Server.app and Server Admin utilities for Lion no longer let you configure NFS. However the NFS software is still there and in fact was significantly upgraded and now supports NFS v4.

  • Lion freezes during Time Machine restore

Crashed my Mac and had Apple restore OSX.  Upgraded go Lion and started restoring my data from a WD hard drive connected using a USB cable.  I'm finding that I can restore my JPEG images, but Lion freezes if there is a quicktime file included in the restore and I have to force a shut down.  Has anyone else encountered this problem?

I am having the same issue.   Time Machine backup to Time Capsule starts then freezed the OS and a hard machine reset is all that will work.  My machines with Snow Leopard do not have this problem.. This is causing me a lot of problems and no one at Apple seems to know or care why this is happening...

  • New Install Works Fine then System  Crashes After Time Machine Backup

I have installed Snow Leopard and everything went fine. I setup my external drive as the backup drive for Time Machine and did a backup. Then when I next used it, various applications started crashing. Then the System began crashing and gave me the gray screen restart and would never load again.
I got out the Snow Leopard disk and used DIsk Utilities to repair the disk and permissions, which seemed to work well. The computer worked great for a while. Then after I used Time Machine to back it up, when I next used it the System began crashing again.
What is going on here? It seems to be too much of a coincidence that the problems started immediately after I performed my first Time Machine backup to an external drive.

    Woodwyn wrote:
Actually I already did that more or less. I re-installed the Snow Leopard printer drivers from the DVD after I previously repaired my system using DIsk Utilities. After which, I was prompted to download and install the 10.6.2 Combo update again. Which I did. After which, I ran disk utility and repaired and permissions verified the disk. But if you think going back to the original 6.0 install is important, then I presume you also mean I need to run all the subsequent updates as well?
So you only re-insalled printer drivers and updated the existing OS to 10.6.2? Then that may be enough. Otherwise, if the issue returns, I would suggest a full re-install of the OS at 10.6.0 followed by updates to 10.6.2.
However, first I am going to repair the drive and NOT enable Time Machine or perform a back-up, to see how long it lasts without crashing. The last two times, the crashing began within an hour of finishing the install and repairing the disk (immediately following a "co-incidental" Time Machine backup both times, of course). It's entirely possible Time Machine is not the culprit, however, that will confirm whether it has been the trigger.
Good troubleshooting strategy. Only time will tell.
Another thought occurs to me...Is the RAM that is installed on your Mac the original cards supplied by Apple - or did you upgrade it with 3rd party RAM yourself. The crashing you described earlier could very well be from a bad RAM card - even one that came from Apple.
It is one 2GB card, or two 1GB cards? If the crashing continues, I would suggest taking one of them out and seeing how things perform, then switching them and seeing if things change.

  • Time Capsule crashes when Time Machine starts a backup

I've not searched through the postings here to see if other people have seen a similar problem. I've not attempted to repeat the problem I've seen here so I'm not very clear about the cause.
I'm using a MacBook Pro with OS 10.5.4 connected via a network cabled directly to a Time Capsule which is connected to a DSL/Cable modem. The Time Capsule is updated with v 7.3.2 of the firmware. I've got Time Machine enabled but I'm also using the Time Capsule disk (1TB) to store photos that I've previously archived to CD. I'm in the process of copying all the data from CD to the Time Capsule.
Having copied some photo data to the Time Capsule I was trying out some photo cataloguing SW to see if it was any good (iPhoto is no good to me as I don't want to store photos on the local drive of my machine) - Kodak EasyShare v6.1. Having loaded some images into EasyShare I tried to use finder to search for the file names of some of the images to check that EasyShare was not copying images to my local drive. While I was doing this I think Time Machine tried to kick in and start doing a backup. I believe that Time Capsule crashed at this point. Finder froze and after I restarted it (via Force Quit not a re-boot) I discovered that I had no network connection and Mac OS couldn't see the Time Capsule under FInder or via AirPort Utility (the Time Machine backup also timed out and failed). Time Capsule just sat there with the disk spinning and a green light on the front as if all was OK. Actually - the disk just kept spinning (Time Capsule normally shuts down the drive after it is idle for a while). Because of this I'm pretty sure that Time Capsule had crashed.
I experimented with re-booting my Mac but still no network etc so I tried power cycling the Time Capsule and everything came back to life.
I'm guessing that my doing a search (or some other drive activity on Time Capsule) at the same time as Time Machine kicking in with a backup caused Time Capsule to crash.
Perhaps this is not a very interesting point if this problem is not repeatable but - well, I'd be interested to know if others have seen similar behavior...

I'm having a very similar problem and it is detrimental.
Here is the scenario: I have a 1TB Time Capsule as my primary router. I am able to perform backups on all but one of my machines. My iMac backs up via 1GB ethernet to the TC, my MacBookAir (60GB,SS) backs up via wireless N (270mb) and my other MacBookAir (80GB,IDE) also backs up via wireless N without any problems.
I used to use a 500mb external drive to backup my iMac but outgrew it, so I started backing up to the TC instead. No problems at all.
I also used to back up my Intel MacMini running Mac OS X Server 10.5.5 to a similar external hard-drive but haven't in a while.
I decided it finally made sense to backup ALL my Mac's to the same 1TB TimeCapsule but it's just not working out!
On the MacMini; I turn on TimeMachine, the TimeCapsule has been chosen as a backup location, it prepares backup for a moment, mounts the backup drive and then appears to begin backup up... No...! First I get a message the the TimeCapsule closed the connection, next I lose Internet connection across my entire network both wired and wireless and then the TimeCapsule light turns amber, flashes and essentially does a completel crash / reset and then comes back to life a few moments later. I can backup any other computer except the MacMini to the TimeCapsule without "crashing" it and it makes no sense! Every computer is completely up to date with all the latest patches and the TimeCapsule is running 7.3.2
I sure hope this gets resolved, seems like other people are pretty disgusted with the performance of the TimeCapsule with problems that have no resolution.

  • 10.8.4 crashes on Time Machine

    Good afternoon all,
My mid-2011 iMac has crashed a number of times since upgrading to 10.8.4.  Different apps are reported to cause the crash (e.g. Chrome, Calander, screen saver), it seems whatever the app that had focus at the time of the crash is blamed, however, I think it coinsides with Time Machine start a backup.
The other evening I had three crashes and turned off Time Machine.  No crashes   I ran the AHT and it found no errors.  Disk Utility seems to see the TM drive as OK.  The TM dive is a 1TB WD drive in a Lacie enclosure, attached to the Mac via USB 2.
This morning I decided to turn TM back on after formatting the drive.  It kicked off the backup and I went to work.  This evening the iMac had returned to the login screen and I was greeted with this crash report upon logging in:

Does anyone know what may be causing this?  I can't particularly afford to buy a new HDD and enclosure, so if I just need to buy one and not the other then that'd be cool.  I've got an identical setup on another drive that just has some DVD images on, it doesn't get used half as much and hasn't been causing any issue.
    Many thanks for any suggestions,
    Ben

Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then disable these, reenable one at time to determine which. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, again, extended tests at least twice, followed by  Rember.  See

  • Safari 7.0.4 crashes after Time Machine restore?

Yesterday, I updated to the Yosemite Beta, and played around with it for a bit. After deciding that it was too buggy to keep using, I rebooted, holding Command+R, and restored to my latest Mavericks backup, from my Time Machine, which is a 1TB sata drive on my desk. When I booted it back up, it asked me for my Apple ID a few times, and then dumped me at my desktop. Everything worked fine, except for Safari. Upon trying to open it, it crashes, and gives me this crashlog. If anyone knows how to fix it, I would love some advice.
Just realized that I posted this to the wrong section. My bad.

I'll ask the hosts to move the post.
Try repeating what you did, but before you restore, erase the disk formatting it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Options GUID.
Several people have experienced this. It appears Yosemite is leaving files which are incompatible.

  • I just updated to Mountain Lion and now time machine won't recognize my backups from before the update.

I updated from Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.2 on my MacBook Pro
I used disk utility to restore my external hardrive because I read somewhere that that would fix the problem.
It did fix the problem but only temporarily. I was able to view my backups from Snow Leopard, but as soon as I tried to backup again, time machine was stuck
"preparing to backup" for 5 hours and when I quit the prepare I could no longer access my previous backups.

So what happens if you go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General? Are you able to go there at all? If you are able to go there, can you unlock the preferences using the lock in the lower left and your login name and password?
If you are able to do this, can you change the "Allow applications downloaded from:" to Anywhere?
    Best of luck.

  • Mountain Lion vs. Time Machine

I set up two external hard drives for use with Time Machine. Last night it did the first backup to one HD, now it's doing the first backup to the other one. Once this is done, and it starts doing "regular" backups, will it start counting down the time to the next backup like Lion used to do?
The reason I ask this is that Mountain Lion's TM just lists "Only backup" (and the time) for the hard drive that it's already done. It doesn't say when the next backup will occur. Will it start doing this when it finishes the initial backup to the other drive?

It only showed a countdown when you changed the disk.
And no, you won't see that anymore.
Also see the Time Machine section in Changes in Mountain Lion for other interesting news.

  • Mountain Lion: problem with Time Machine directories and spotlight indexing

I'm using a fresh install of 10.8 Mountain Lion on a 2011 MBP.  It's a work laptop with many ASCII files containing numerical data (floating point numbers), with varying file extensions.  Some of the files are multi-gig, some are only a few hundred K, and there are tens of thousands of them.  Roughly 500G of numerical data.
I can disable spotlight from indexing certain subdirectories of my home directory on the local drive.  However, when using Time Machine to backup, I seem to be entirely unable to prevent spotlight from attemping to fully index the external drive (Time Machine volume).   I actually let spotlight run for over 36 hours this weekend in a futile attempt for it to finish indexing the TM volume.   The /.Spotlight-V100 index on the external drive is roughly 100G and continuously written and overwritten.  /var/log/system.log had various "Merging failed" messages for temp spotlight files.  I deleted the index, let spotlight run again overnight, but it did not finish indexing.  "sudo fs_usage -f filesys mds mdworker mdimport mdworker32 | grep open" showed spotlight slowly chugging through the thousands of numerical files.
I believe the problem is related to this old report from someone who noticed a leopard -> snow leopard change:
    http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=106703
    http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6126_102-366184/snow-leopard-10-6-spotlight-indexing -and-disk-usage/
However, I don't see an easy solution.  In ML, if you drag the TM volume to the spotlight privacy list it gives you a message about how you can't disable indexing of TM volumes because it's essential for TM.  I have not yet tried to manually put in some kind of .metadata_never_index file in the relevant TM volume directories (I am not sure if that will do anything, or perhaps break TM backups), but that's one possible next step.
Anyone have ideas on how I can have my TM backups work but the spotlight indexing of all these data files (their subdirectories) disabled?   I'm not specifically TRYING to back up those data files with TM (they're duplicated elsewhere), they're just on the same machine as a bunch of other stuff I need backed up via TM.  Apple has a disaster on their hands for anyone trying to backup a machine which also has large data sets.

I'm not aware of any avenue to tell spotlight to not index all or part of a backup.
However, the indexing should work, even if takes a long time.
I don't think this is a new issue and has been part of TM from the start.
Realistically, it may be time to consider whether TM is the best choice for these data files?
Are they very volatile do they change frequently both as to content of individual files and total set of files?
If not, then a clone or syncing type of backup might be better suited for these files.
I do not back up all my files via time machine. I keep photographs and music outside of Time Machine. to be sure they are backed up but via clones.
To show why  this might the best take photographs. My photographs are basically immutable once they enter the system, but I may come back with 5000 images from a trip and whittle that down to a few hundred eventually. This would cause a lot of files to be saved in TM that are no longer wanted, - but are not easy to remove formthe backup. while the ones I want haven't changed. TM is not geared to make handling that easily.
As a further aside, ideally one should back everything of value up twice via 2 different means.
I've had backup drives fail.I've had TM logically fail (disk is fine -TM internal data structures bad).

  • HT1199 I needed to restore my Imac (lion) from a Time Machine backup on a peripheral HD.  Everything woirked fine except none of my Pictures showed up and my TM backups were all erased.  Any way to recover??

I need to perform a complete restore of my IMac from a stand-alone HD Time Machine backup.  The restore was to the internal HD in the IMac.  The IMac is a new Intel i5 unit running Lion.  The restore went fine except none of my picture files appeared.  My external HD is partioned into a Time Machine Back Up and a Stoarge partion.  All the TM back ups prior to the restore are gone and the external storage was wiped clean.  3000 photos from our African Safaris are gone.  Any ideas on if they can be recovered from either the external storage drive or the internal HD?
Where did the older TM BUs go?
    Thanks for any advise

    Hello:
I don't know what you did, but there must have been some option to clear the external HD.  To my knowledge, restoring from a Time Machine backup will NOT clear the external HD.
Since I was not there, I really cannot speculate on what happened:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4927
In any event, there are third party tools that will attempt to recover data from erased drives (the erase normally deletes pointers, not the actual data).
