Lion glitchy and slow.  What gives!?

I have seen other posts about this, and it is quite ridiculous.
The Lion upgrade is painful, PAINFUL.
I feel like I am using a computer from 2002, what gives?!
Just a regular Mac user with no wacky applications installed or even used.
Losing the mac: office is understandable, due to no powerpc, but not have a platform that works is sort of an issue.
So slooooooowwwwwww, and with icloud, it all seems archaic.

Have you just installed/upgraded?
If so, Lion performs a slew of maintenance tasks, including clearing all old caches and rebuilding the Spotlight index (which, in itself can take hours, or even days to complete).
You'll probably also find your productivity inhibited for a while as you find the new bells, whistles and knobs.
So give it a little while - at least wait until your spotlight is updated before trying to benchmark performance.

  • Lion stalling and slowing down

    Dead LION
Two-three months ago I upgraded to Lion (10.7.4)
The Lion discriminates a lot of applications
I should never have done that. Waste of money and especially a waste of my time.
There are NO essential news in Lion. It's just a monymaker for Apple
A bunch of applications does not work in Lion, while they been working fine in Snowleopard.
I could not delete the Lion and re-install SnowLeopard. (With out deleting all my datas).
I had to install SnowLeopard on a seperate external harddrive and now have to organize and disintegrate my else integrated work on two harddrives.
What a f'''''' bore. And absolute no thanks to Apple.
The Lion is stalling and slowing down, quits applications etc.
Since I installed the Lion on my computer (MacBook Pro 2 Ghz Intel core i7. 4 GB 1333 Hz DDR3)
is has been slowing down, in general and especially my browsers (Safari 5.1.7) (Google Chrome 13.0782.215) (Firefox 13.0.1). And Mail (5.2).
The OS quits applications, especially Mail and Safari.
The OS makes applications ever so often go in no-answer mode . Then I have to forcefully end them and start all over.
For speed and comfort I am back to 1991 Apple LC with 2 MB RAM. And no, the comfort was better then.
I have repaired disk with the OS own disktool.
I have reparied permissions again and again.
I have scanned for all problems and virus (MacKeeper).
I have rebooted and set the parametres to zero.
    All applications are updated
    Nothing helps.
I hope some of you friendly users or nerds can help. Thank you.

Sounds like a failed HD. Get another HD, install it, reinstall the OS, upgrade to Lion, and then restore the TM backup.

  • The Lion is unleashed? What gives. Need a fix.

Just installed Lion and all helljust broke lose. Several programs don't work Adobe CS5 Suite. It's asking for Java but I can't download it because my Wi-Fi is not working anymore. What gives?

    Hi Lode
First run repair Disk Permissions. Did another install yesterday on an iMac
and it threw up the WiFi problen. (First one out of 10).
If that fixes your WiFi go to the Apple downloads and get the latest Java update.
I run all the adobe programs and with the 10.7.2 they are really sreaming along.
Aperture iPhoto as well. Worth the update
    Hope this helps.

  • Upgrade to version 9 is a disaster; unable to restore bookmarks with your troubleshooting tips, and version is incredibly slow and unresponsive; what gives?

I finally gave in and tried to upgrade to Firefox 9 from 3.6. I backed up my bookmarks, because I tried once before and lost the bookmarks. That time, I was able to restore the older version of Firefox.
This time I figured it was safe because I backed up the bookmarks. When they didn't show up, I went to the troubleshooting section. First, I restarted the computer (Mac running OS 10.6.8). When this didn't work, I tried the renaming of the places.sqlite and places.sqlite-journal. I was not able to change the names on these. I could not unlock the files, even though I have read and write privileges. So then I tried restoring the back-up of the bookmarks I had just done. The message I got said "Firefox unable to process the backup file".
In addition to this problem, the new version is so slow that it is giving me unresponsive script messages on almost every new window. I also notice the back button is always gray, and I can't go back in the history. No history is recording.
Is there any way to get the older version back, or fix these problems?

By slower you mean starting up slower or during regular operation slower?
    Login Items;
Over time, as you install more programs, they may be running at startup (login). Check what items are set to start during login.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Users & Groups.
Click your account’s name, and then click Login Items. Select the ones you dont want and hit the minus bar to delete from launching during log in.
    For normal running processes;
Use Activity Monitor to see what processes and apps are using a lot of resources and then troubleshoot from there as to why certain programs are taking up more resources than normal.

  • Attempted to upgrade to Mavericks from Lion 10.7.5 and does not work, what gives?

Attempted to upgrade to Mavericks from Lion 10.7.5, but whenever I attempt the upgrade the Apple prompt replies 'cannot complete'. I may be mistaken, but I think my Mac Pro is qualified (MacPro 1.1, Dual-Core Xenon @2.66 GHz, 6 GB DRAM). What gives?

The MacPro 1,1 does not support Mavericks. It has to be a 2008 model or later:

  • Very slow to open and run - what can I do?

    Hello
I'm quite a beginner in terms of macbook pro maintenance and so please give me the basics, with clear instructions.....
I've had my macbook pro for about 4 years.  I have upgraded to Mountain Lion.
It has started to be a real issue how slow my laptop now is to start up, in particular, and then to do other things.
What might be the problem?  What do I need to check?
    Thank you for your advice.
    Katie

Mt. Lion actually requires 4 GB RAM.  If you do not have that installed, I would suggest you do so.
The HDD is often a problem.  Investigate there.
Here is a troubleshooting document that will provide you with possible solutions:

    rdallas001 wrote:
    Is the router to small?
Not necessarily, if you are using Facetime all the data goes through your WiFi router, your cable/DSL modem, your ISP and the internet to Apple's Facetime servers and then, in reverse, down to the Facetime recipient. If your ISP connection is too slow or there is excessive traffic on the internet you can have Facetime problems.
Most WiFi routers can handle this unless others in the house are also using WiFi at the same time. The problem may be your ISP connection or congestion on the internet, etc.

Could there be a setting I need to adjust in the iPad2?  When I try to turn on WiFi and enter the name of the WiFi that I have established, including the security type and the password, I get the message "Could not scan for wireless networks."  Is there a setting in iCloud or other location that needs to be changed?

  • My MacBook Pro (2010) running Mountain Lion is getting slower and slower. How do I fix the orphan files?

My 2010 Macbook pro is running slower and slower. I went to the Genius Bar about eight months ago, and they botted up from the disk, and let it go through and find what  its process to find and fix what I think were "orphan" files. I cannot remember what they did, but when they did it, the speed on my Macbook picked up considerably.
I have since upgraded to Mountain Lion, but these problems do not seem related to that. My 500 GB HDD is about 80% full.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.
