Lion Migration Assistant - Your other Mac stopped responding

iMac version 10.7
MBP version 10.7 clean install
I'm trying to migrate everything from the imac to the mbp.  I've done this before in snowleopard.
I'm getting hung up just after the code is shown on both screens.  the imac says "your other mac is ready" and the mbp says "your other mac stopped responding".
they are connected with the same ethernet i've used before.
the mbp can't find the imac.

I have the same problem,
I want to migrate from a Lion computer to another Lion computer,
and the source computer says "Your other Mac is ready.", and the destination computer says "Your other Mac stopped responding.".
I disabled the screen sharing in my source computer.
Now I don't have any shared things in both computers.
However, I still have the same problem.
Any idea?
Regards,
David

Can you provide any more information about the files that are causing the problems? Are these particularly large files? Many pages or images? Have you opened these files in Photoshop CS5, or other versions of Photoshop?
What do you see when you try to import these PDFs? Do you get the PDF Import dialog, allowing you to select pages or images from the PDF? Is so, is it hanging when you click OK or at another time?
Any more details about the problem or other info (as well as sample files) you can provide, the easier it will be for us to help identify the cause of your problems.

  • Migration assistant update for Mac OS X Snow Leopard

Hello -- I downloaded SNOW LEOPARD successfully that past week. I did a software update as well afterwards.
Now in preparation for upgrading to LION OS X, I read an article that mentions one must make sure to have the MIGRATION ASSISTANT UPDATE for Mac OS X Snow Leopard installed. I am unsure if this was included in the software updates I performed. One would assume it would be there. BUT there is not a detailed listing of what these combination updates include. HOW can I tell if I have the desired version required to continue on to LION?
Another suggestion was for one to perform FIRST AID on the start up disk. It only says to select your Mac HD and then to "verify" ..... do they mean to VERIFY DISK or VERIFY DISK PERMISSIONS. I have on occasion performed a REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS but not the others mentioned. I do not know what the difference is?
    THANK YOU

I have the same console mesages repeating ad-nasium as you do. What is interesting is I do have the StartuoItems directory but it is empty. The problem I have is that the log-in window comes up as normal, but I can not type in it for about 5-8 seconds. This has started after the latest updates which you mention. Don't know if this issue is related or not. Have deleted the loginwindows and loginitems preferences to no effect.

Probably a PC issue, you can try calling AppleCare, you are covered for 90 days from the date of purchase and can find the phone number in the owners manual. Also please look over:

    Thomas,
It would also be extremely helpful to those trying to help you if you complted your Profile so we at least know what iMac and version of OS X is installed. Click Your Stuff in the upper right then click Profile and complete the necessary fields including what part of the planet you're located.

  • TS1963 What if I can't find Migration Assistant on my mac! I have updated and installed any available downloads.

I have tried reloading the system and downloading the updates. I am giving this Mac Mini to my father-in-law and I had the same problem before reloading the system when I was trying to load the contents onto my new Mini Server. My solution at the time was to put the mini into external drive mode and use a Firewire cable to connect to the new macmini. I would really like a solution that doesn't envolve buying cables or tearing apart his old computer.
Right now I can't load Migration Assistant on my Mac Mini Server because the Migration Assistant doesn't show up despite various attempts to load it. It is part of the system, so it should be there. I have no reference to this problem because there is no discussion about it or similar problem that appears through google searching.

OS X Servers do not have Migration Assistant - this only on client computers.
If you want your father to use the OS X Server it will be a manual data transfer. It can be done over the network, external USB drive or as you mentioned various cables.

  • TS3230 why does my mac stop responding

All of a sudden my mac stops responding, no matter what browser I am using, I have to restart it and its fine for awhile and then it happens again
Any suggestions about what i can do ?

Make sure all of your browsers are updated?
If you have any devices connected to your computer, disconnect them to see if your browsers are still having problems.  If not, it's one and/or all of your devices that is not compatible and/or needs updated drivers to work w/ML.
Repair permissions and restart your computer afterwards.  Last resort is to run the "recovery" option.

  • I recently bought a new macbook pro and set it up using the migration assistant and my mac mini.  I can't get the text message forwarding feature to work with both computers.

I recently bought a new macbook pro and set it up using the migration assistant from my mac mini.  I can't get the text message forwarding feature to work with both computers.  It keeps saying that I only have 2 devices setup, my iPad and my macbook pro.  When I mess with the setting on my mac mini, it goes from saying that that is one of the devices to my macbook pro being the 2nd device.  I think that something happened as a result of my using the migration assistant and now it thinks that my macbook pro and my mac mini are one and the same computer.  Any ideas?

    Thanks, Sig.
The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

No everything that was on the PC remains there.

  • Lion Migration Assistant

On my Snow Leopard I have a few programs that will not run under Lion.  With the Lion Migration Assistant can I specify which programs to transfer to the new computer, or do they all have to transfer?

If the app has an installer, check to see it there's an uninstaller. If it doesn't, then usually a drag and drop suffices. Other places to look for components is /Library/Application Support/ and /Library/Caches/, each user's /Library/Application Support/, /Library/Caches/, and /Library/Preferences/. Just delete anything associated with the app or developer. Some say there are 3rd-party things that'll do that, such as AppZapper, but I've never messed with them. As I noted, my Lion installation has all the PPC apps and sundry pieces, but doesn't affect Lion's performance, so I'll just leave them in place. My boot volumes are about 100 GB, with less than 50 GB used.

  • Mac OS X Lion Migration Assistant "looking for other computers"

I just installed Mac OS X Lion from Snow Leopard.  I actually did a clean install and during the setup, I attempted to use the Migration Assistant to transfer my Time Machine Backup, saved on a Time Capsule, but after selecting to transfer from my Time Machine, it shows my Time Capsule but continuously is 'looking for other computers".  The drive shows at the top and I'm able to click  continue, even while it still searches, but once I click continue, i put in my Time Capsules passowrd, it continues to search and i can no longer click continue.  It never stops searching.
I found article how to fix this in Snow Leopard http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3253?viewlocale=en_US but the setting are different in the Security tab in the Preferences.  There is no 'Allow all incoming computers'.  I have tried both with firewall on and off and neither way works.
Let me know if you have a fix for this, as I have 250 gbs waiting on my Time Capsule to be imported.
    Thanks,

SImilar problem here, migrating from an old MacBook Air to a new one (directly, not via backup).
During the new Mac's initial setup, I followed all the steps properly as instructed (and made sure the original machine's Firewall was off). I tried both my main WiFi network and an ad hoc network, with Internet Sharing. (Ad hoc proved VERY finnicky to even get a connection. Miserable--it would work or it wouldn't, and I had no power over it: it would fail on the same config where it would succeed. A shame, because ad hoc would be the ideal, low-interference way to get the fastest WiFi transfer. And it's a method Apple's support site even suggests.)
No matter what I did, both machines just stuck at "Looking for other computers" forever. I spent hours trying to get it to work. I wasn't going to buy an ethernet adapter, nor a new external HD (with some third-party backup software as a workaround) just so I could power on my new Mac and have my stuff on it.
Eventually I gave up, installed without migrating, and then ran Migration Assistant after the fact. That DID connect OK (took about 1 hour per 10 GB and was done by morning).
But doing it that way was a mess: there was NO warning when I did the initial setup that I should not use my own name as the main account if I planned to migrate later. Who knew? I couldn't migrate after the fact because I had the same name on both machines. Well.... of course! Don't most people keep the same name? It's as though you're not expected to ever buy another Mac unless you're a newlywed woman. (None of which would be an issue if migration would happen during initial setup as it should.)
So I had to create a superfluous extra account with admin privileges, run Migration Assistant from there, replace the redundantly-named new account, and then find and delete the redundant account where it was stashed during migration. Lastly, I deleted the superfluous admin account as well. THREE accounts needed to be involved, for a process ANY Mac-to-Mac buyer will face. There was nothing special about my migration.
I don't think most users could even figure out all these steps.
A loyal Air user buying a new Air should not be such an incredible hassle. It "just doesn't work."

  • Restoring From Time Machine Migration Assistant (and other ??)

    Hello
Please bear with me on this long question....
For several reasons I reinstalled ML which involves erasing the HDD first.  I do have everything bakced-up to Carbonite and TM.  Carbonite is slow as molassess so I opted to try Migration Assistant/TM to restore my files.  MA does not allow you to choose an older (good) backup and the backup that was used was an incomplete one as evidenced by the photo library being incomplete.  Another poster had a similar question and the solution involved using the install disk.  There is no install disc since it was a download from the Apps store.
Carbonite has a tendency to freeze-up during a long download.  Restarting it brings your download back to the very beginning.  I'm not happy about Carbonite.  I've heard of SuperDuper and seems to have gotten good reviews.
    Questions:
    1.  Is there a method to access an older TM backup from MA?
    2.  Is there a better option that Carbonite?
    3. Is SuperDuper a good option for backups?
    thank you, Bruce.

If your Mac shipped with a System Install DVD then boot from it and choose "Restore from Time Machine backup".
If your Mac shipped with Lion already installed you should be able to use OS X Recovery. Boot while holding ⌘ R and choose "Restore from Time Machine backup".
Either one should present a dated list of complete system backups from which to choose. Ideally it should be the most recent one, but if you have reason to believe it is incomplete (it should not be) then try an earlier one.
You can also boot from a locally connected Time Machine backup volume. Make sure it is connected with USB or FireWire and boot while holding an Option key. This will invoke Startup Manager, from which you can select your Time Machine backup volume. It will present the same restore options as OS X Recovery.
These options will be faster and should be less prone to difficulty than using Migration Assistant.
Time Machine and "clone" software use very different philosophies. SuperDuper! is good, so is Carbon Copy Cloner. They are more customizable than Time Machine, whose customizable features essentially consist of an "on / off" switch
Of course that is also its sole advantage over the others - it's boneheadedly simple to use.
Forget Carbonite, as you learned it does not work well on Macs. I know of no similar offsite backup services to recommend.

  • Use Mountain Lion Migration Assistant to access Mavericks disks?

    Hi,
Maybe this is a stupid question... I have a MacBook Air from work with Mountain Lion on it, and I wanted to use Migration Assistant to import files and settings from my personal Mac (also a MacBook Air).  However, my personal computer (the source one) is running Mavericks.
I've connected the two computers with a Thunderbolt cable and booted my personal computer (the source) into target disk mode.  The work computer (destination) recognizes the disks on my personal computer but when I run Migration Assistant, it won't bring up my source computer's hard drive.
Is this normal?  I can't find any reference to whether it's possible to use Migration Assistant to migrate from a newer OS to an older one.

I don't think your Mac will let you transfer files from a different Mac with OS X Mavericks, because you can damage Mac OS X if you transfer apps and settings.
Instead, transfer your files with an external drive or connect both of them with a Thunderbolt cable (remember that it only works with Mid 2011 and newer MacBooks Air), and put the Mac with Mavericks in Target Disk mode (hold the T key while your MacBook Air is starting up), so you can access to your Mavericks Mac's hard drive from the other MacBook

  • Migration assistant screw up, Mac Pro not seeing wifi/TC

    Hi
I've been using a MacBookPro (MBP) for almost 5 years now, with a 1TB Time Capsule (TC1) using Time Machine (TM). I am the sole user, HDD is 270Gb used/50Gb free; using Mavericks, v10.9.2. On Friday, I used Sophos anti virus home edition, to scan the MBP. It comes up with no threats identified, and I uninstall Sophos.
Yesterday I took delivery of the Mac Pro (MP) with the 3Tb Time Capsule (TC3).
I booted up the MP, with the TC3. I did not, at this stage, connect the TC3 to the internet. Using TM, I backed up the MP. TC3 flashes the amber light.
Using Migration Assistant (MA) I tried to copy the MBP to the MP, 3 times. This did not work. At the point where the target machine has listed what is available to transfer, I click Continue and MA on the MP closes, on the MBP it says something like connection lost. The screen where this happens, lists 3 items available to transfer Application, Documents/Date and Computer settings; with a content of 128kb indicated, which is clearly wrong! The connection was an Ethernet cable direct from the MBP to the MP.
At this stage, I decide to connect the MP to the internet using TC3, there's some settings to be changed on TC3 using Airport Utility and it connects ok. TC3 has a steady green light.
I run 2 software updates on the MP. I surf the net briefly, to make sure it's ok.
I try again to use MA. This time, the dialgoue box listing what's available to transfer is different. There are 2 or 3 more options, colour is present, the font is different, the box is about the same size. The MP would not let me take any screenshots as all other applications are closed when MA is running. I don't think it gave me the size of what was being transferred, but it looked more hopeful, so I Continue and the transfer starts, with an estimated time of 33 minutes.
    The transfer completes.
The MBP, as you would expect, has not changed, the MP has, but not in the way I expected. Applications appear to have all transferred (without checking them), no Documents/data and no Downloads appear to have transferred; I ticked to transfer everything.;I know I can reconnect the Ethernet cable and simply copy the data across.
But the main problem appears to be, the MP does not see the wifi.
    Ethernet cable is removed.
The MP asks if I want to give permission to eeEvents manager (I presume calendar related) and say yes. It also asks if I want to install a Java run time, no.
In System preferences/Network it tells me a new Thunderbolt bridge has been found and asks if it's ok, to accept it, yes. It tells me the Ethernet cable is disconnected, rightly so; it says Airport is not connected.
I open Airport utility, no sign of the TC1 or TC3 despite it searching. Apart from TC1, the MP, MBP and TC3 are sat within a couple of feet of each other.
I turn on TC1/TC3 (separately and not at the same time, then at the same time), but the MP does not see them. I've reset TC3, rebooted the MP and still the MP does not see it.
I don't get any errors or warnings coming up.
I think my next option is to try and reset the MP to the factory settings, but this won't work, as I've no internet connection to reinstall OS X. No disc is sent with the MP.
Any suggestions as to what to try? Otherwise, I'll be off to the Apple Store tomorrow for a One to One!! :-(
Thanks for any help and Happy Mother's Day!!

Take the MP and connect it via ETH to your main router.
Restart the machine holding down command option R, you should see a spinning globe
Open disk utility and reformat the MP HD as Mac journaled
Then install OSX on this drive
