Lion Questions

I have several Lion Questions (I hope someone has the answers):
How soon will new Macs ship with Lion preinstalled? And is the ship date the same for Apple Stores as well as other merchants as well?
If a new Mac is bought w/Lion pre-installed what options will I have if I need to replace OS or something within it?
Will Logic Pro X, when it’s released, work under 10.6.8 or just under Lion?
Will Logic Pro X be able to be install on it's own or does it need to see a former version? And if not is it better to transfer the most recent version to a new Mac or should I put on an older disc based program and do a fresh install?

No one knows for sure when Macs will ship with it preinstalled. But if you buy it from an Apple store, it's a free upgrade. I would assume the merchants would sell them the same time Apple retailers do.
I'm a little confused by your second question... but I'll interpret it as this. You want to do a full OS reintallation, but don't have a disc. Lion comes with a dedicated partition specifically for this. It has a built in "recovery" partition.
As far as Logic Pro X, I'd assume (since Apple creates it) that it will work with 10.7. I'd contact Apple for more details on upcoming software.

  • Mail in Mt. Lion question

Seems that Mail app won't play my incoming mail sound each time I close it and open it again, especially when I put it to sleep at night. I have to quit it and reopen it to get the sound to play. Is this an Apple problem or MY problem? Any suggestions?
    TIA,
    Connie

Bumping this up because I've received no response and perhaps someone out there might know. I don't think I've ever not had a question answered here before.
Anyway, when I my iMac at night and wake it up in the morning, there are no sounds at all—incoming or outgoing—until I quit Mail and reopen it. Is this a flaw with Mt. Lion? What might be the problem?

  • Newbie reinstall mountain lion question.

Greetings... I own a Macbook pro Retina 15 Inch early 2013, with Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5 (12F2501). I would like to format it and install a new out of the box OSX (Mountain Lion). My question is that if I re-install the software from the internet as it is mentioned elsewhere, would I get Mountain lion or Yosemite. As I don't want to upgrade to Yosemite yet.
    Thanks...

To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase a redemption code at the Online Apple Store: OS X Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. Use the code to redeem a download of Mountain Lion from the App Store. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later.
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model
                 Identifier 5,1 or later.
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later.
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
       2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
Use DiskMaker X to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive. Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.
Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should install the version of OS X that you had installed.

  • Fresh Install of Lion - Questions

I plan to format my MBP and install Slow Leopord from the disk, then install Lion.  I want to start over fresh in order to eliminate some annoying problems I've been having.  However, before doing this I have a few questions I hope some of you can help with.
    1.  iPhone - how do I back up all my iphone content so when I connect it to iTunes on the fresh Lion install that it won't want to erase everything on my iPhone.  I want to make sure that when I connect the first time it won't do the whole "You've never connected to this computer before...."  Is there a way to back up my iphone content on bot the iPhone and iTunes and somehow put it on the fresh installed computer?  (I sure hope that makes sense).
    2.  iTunes - Can I back up my iTunes media and import it back into the fresh install of itunes?  If so, how?
    Much Thanks for any help.

    Hi PsychTech,
Sounds like you have an Xserve Cluster Node which doesn't come with a CD/DVD drive. How many drive bays does it have?
If it is then you'd be stuck to running 10.5 on it. Mountain Lion will only install on the 2009 Xserve which does have a DVD drive in the top right corner.
To be able to get into the servers you could do the following.. Find a copy of Tiger or Leopard on CD/DVD.. Either create a bootable image of it and start from a USB/Firewire Hard disk. When you boot up DO NOT go to install OS X but instead go to the Utilities menu and you'll find an option to reset the password which will at least get you in. You can do this with the client version or server version of OS X.
    Hope that helps

  • HT4818 Upgrading to OS X Lion question

If I upgrade to OS X Lion, will I have to repartition my computer again? Or will it keep my Windows partition?

External hard drives are the cheapest insurance you can
get for a computer.  Even if you don't update, there is always
a chance the hard drive or even the computer could die.
Any way, I installed Lion on two machines with Bootcamp
partitions and had no issues.  Both were Windows7 64 bit.
I think it just grabs the 650 meg it uses from the OSX
    partition.

  • 2 quick Lion questions

    1) I had a folder as a shortcut in my side bar, when I upgraded to Lion the shortcut won't work. It gives no response. I tried to drag out and delete it but it won't work. I created the shortcut again and it works, but the old one just wont go away. how can I make it go away? See the picture
2)I know I can clean install Lion from the Lion partition created, but will it redownload the 4GB file, or all files neceesarry are on the disk?
I don't want to wait 2-4 hrs for another download.

You can access the Recovery Partition by holding command + r keys upon rebooting.
The Lion Recovery Partition does require a Internet connection (and Apple ID) to redownload the installation files.
A Ethernet connection seems to work better than a WIFI
Just reinstalling Lion will overwrite Lion, not your files or programs.
But make a external backup of your files and disconnect regardless.
If you want to erase/format partitions, then use Disk Utility first.

  • DNG and Mountain Lion Question

I just upgraded to a new computer, from a Mac Pro running Lion to an iMac running Mountain Lion. Using Lightroom 5 on both of them. Everything went fine with the migration of the photographs and catalog and all is well in the Lightroom world.
I've been converting images from my Fuji RAF to DNG on import for the past six months or so.  For some reason, Finder on the Mountain Lion machine does't give me a preview of the DNG files.  It just shows the DNG icon.  However, the same image has a preview in the Finder in Lion.
Finder and Preview work fine with original RAF files on both machines.
Does anyone have an idea what the difference might be?

This may or may not be related to your problem but it is worth checking out.
In LR 4.4, ACR 7.4 Adobe had some major corrections to the profiles for Fuji cameras using the new X-Trans sensor. see the info below to info from Adobe.
    Changes to Existing Camera Support:
Camera Raw 7.4  includes a correction to the demosaic algorithms for  Fujifilm cameras with the X-Trans sensor. This specifically impacts the  following cameras:
    Fujifilm X-Pro1 (*)
    Fujifilm X-E1 (*)
    Fujifilm X100S
    Fujifilm X20
(*) Based on user feedback, the default sharpening amount applied to  Fujifilm X-Pro1 and Fujifilm X-E1 raw files has been increased between  Camera Raw 7.4 Release Candidate and the final Camera Raw 7.4 release.
Camera Raw 7.4 includes a correction to the demosaic algorithms for  Fujifilm cameras with the EXR sensor. This correction applies only to  raw images captured using the “EXR HR” mode with the following cameras:
    Fujifilm X10
    Fujifilm XF1
    Fujifilm X-S1
    Fujifilm S200EXR
    Fujifilm HS20EXR
    Fujifilm HS30EXR
    Fujifilm F550EXR
    Fujifilm F600EXR
    Fujifilm F770EXR
    Fujifilm F800EXR
If your raw files were converted to DNG using a prior version to LR 4.4 ACR 7.4 they may have been affected in some way.

  • Screen sharing in Lion question

I am trying to set up screen sharing in my local network.
I am using a MacBook with latest Lion as server to which I am trying to connect.
I am connecting with a Powerbook 12" 10.5.8 without problems and controlling the MacBook via Screen Sharing.
I am unable to connect to the MacBook using a MacBook Pro with same Lion installed.
Before that I used the same setup to try out RealVNC. Again, the Powerbook connected to the MacBook without problems, but the MacBook Pro is unable to connect.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.
Oops, posted in wrong forum. Will try under Lion. Sorry.

I use mocha vnc and have the same problem but you can get around it by making a simple macro #T (no space) then your password (no space) #R . When you see the login screen recall this marco and then press the enter arrow in vnc and you will log into lion. Makes it useable until a software fix.
    This works like a charm!
I was also able to input the account password and make it work. Don't know what I did, but it is now working in Mocha. I like VNC Viewer too, but sometimes I am able to input the password and sometimes I can't.

  • Mountain Lion question

I paid for and installed 10.8 on my mac from the app store after installing 10.6 but it still shows 10.6 in about this mac
    Did I do something wrong?
The app store will not let me download again.

After bying and downloading new OS you still need to perform installation. Please check you application folder and look for app which is called Install OS X Mountain Lion (or just open Spotlight and search form Mountain Lion) and run this app (as always Time Machine Backup or any backup is recomended). If it's not there, go to  and open App Store. From the top of the window select Purchases and check if Mountain Lion is listed under your purchases and try to download it again. If you are getting some error, please post exact error message.

  • Older Macs, MobileMe, Lion and Mtn Lion Question

My wife’s 2006 MBP Core Duo didn’t make the cut for Lion, but is going strong with Snow Leopard. In fact, about 6 months ago I put a new 2.5 inch 500 GB 7200 rpm drive in it that replaced the 80 GB 5400 rpm drive, plus added another 1/2 GB of RAM, and it’s running faster than it ever has. The battery is pretty much worn out, but she has an iPad so the MBP never moves.
My concern is what the effect of Apple doing away with MobileMe this summer is going to do. She syncs her iPhone, iPad and MBP mail and calendars thru MobileMe. I don’t know if she’s hosed after that or not.
What if anything can one do to sync Mail, Calendars etc after MobileMe goes away?
OS 10.6.8 is the end of the line for that machine and you need 10.7 for full iCloud functionality, which this MBP can't run. Is there any Apple literature that discusses these issues?

You can migrate from MobileMe to iCloud at http://me.com/move even with Snow Leopard: when asked to confirm that your Mac is running Lion just lie and say 'yes'. Of course you won't be able to access iCloud directly from your Mac.
If you have MobileMe mail set up to collect mail from external POP accounts you should cancel this before migrating, or you may find it still working in iCloud (where it isn't supposed to) and with no way of stopping it.
This will be the situation with Snow Leopard when you have migrated:
Your email, calendars, and 'Find my iPhone' will be migrated to iCloud. Contacts and Bookmarks cannot be migrated from a Snow Leopard Mac.
Your iDisk, together with website hosting and Gallery, will continue to work as before until next June.
Syncing of Dashboard Widgets, Dock Items and Keychains between Macs, and Mail Accounts, Mail Rules, System Preferences, Signatures & Smart Mailboxes between Macs & iOS devices, will cease altogether.
You will be able to access email and calendars on the iCloud website at http://icloud.com provided your browser is reasonably up-to-date.
You will not be able to sync contacts or bookmarks from a pre-Lion Mac.
You will be able to enter the server settings for email manually in the Mail application and access your email.
You will not be able to sync your calendars directly.
Some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point.  BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion.
There appears to be no method of syncing contacts (though Address Book on a Mac can be synced with Google or Yahoo address books - I don't know how reliable this is).
Someone mentioned Evernote: this syncs memos only, between its own application on different machines or devices. It's independent of any of the Apple applications; it works fine on Snow Leopard.
This article examines some of the third-party alternatives to MobileMe:

  • Transfer old mac to mountain lion question

Is there a way to transfer everything (programs/apps, docs, photos, music etc.) from my snow lion to my new iMac running mountain lion.  I have done some research but didn't see if possible to move everything into new operating system?  If not, what is the suggested way to do this?  The old iMac is also "cloned" to an external drive if that helps.

If you are referring to an upgrade of your existing machine from Lion to Mt. Lion when you install ML it only updates OS X. This means all of  your data, settings, apps, etc go along with it and there is absolutely no interruption.
More good news! If you are considering a new Mac that has ML pre-installed when you first turn it on it starts Setup Assistant, part of SA is it asks if you are migrating to a new machine. If you are then it will also migrate all apps, settings, data, and other files! Pondini has written an excellent guide on Setup Assistant, if that is what you're referring to please look it over at: http://pondini.org/OSX/Setup.html
Use your clone from the old machine to migrate all of your data, it can connect via USB, FW etc...If you are getting a new iMac that does not have FW then you can use a Thunderbolt to FW cable and connect that to the FW connection on your clone EHD.

  • OS X Lion question

I have just bought a Mac Mini with Lion 10.7.3 installed but when I go to the App Store and hold down the Option key and check purchases it says that I have no purchases - will this be a problem should I want to re-install from the internet at some point in the future?

    Hi ...
Try right or control clicking instead of using the Option key.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed  then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.

  • Mountian lion question on page swipe

After swiping forward on pages at a web site I click on a new topic and cannot go back to the last page. Have to close out the internet and try to start all over.

What year was your Mac made? If it is a newer unit that came with either Lion or Mountain Lion Pre-Installed then you can use the Online Internet Recovery system to install the original version of OS X that came Pre-Installed on your system.
For some unknown reason it seems that your internal Recovery HD partition, if that is what you used to reinstall MT Lion, is pointing to some type of Pre-Release Beta version as the Preview 3 tag is displayed.
If you used that DVD your Mate gave you then that is the reason.
In any event you will need to start over.
As to not using TM there is no reason to use TM if you don't want to. If you did use it and restored from it you would be back to where you started and NOT have a Clean install.
And doing a Clean install is a good proactice if you install and remove/uninstall programs all the time. Even with OS X everytime you install then remove a program you may leave droplets of that program someplace on the drive in the form of .plist files and or some kinds of files.
