  • OSX Lion Server VPN and Remote Desktop

I can connect with vpn to my OSX Lion Server from the internet to my home network.
With remote Desktop I can reach only the server itself not my other clients in the network.
With my previous environment based on Snow Leopard server that was no problem.
    What could be the problem?

I have an answer, but it has taken a long time to figure it out.
I have a Mac Pro, running behind an Airport Extreme 811N router.  I ran OSX Server 10.6x and after I did the upgrade to 7.5.x firmware on my airport the L2PT service died going thru my router.  I simply switched to the PPTP VPN because it appeared to work fine.  Then I upgraded (or downgraded) to 10.7x Server.  When I did that they got rid of PPTP as an option, and my L2PT connections still did not work.  I went looking online for answers, and found alot of references to the 7.5.x firmware.  I ran a test to see if I could connect to the VPN internal to the LAN - thereby bypassing the router as an issue.  It worked flawlessly.  It definately had something to do with the way 7.5.x handles a packet.
After several trial/error sessions, I figured out that it was the DCHP service on the Airport Extreme that was causing the problem.  For whatever reason if you have DCHP assign the IP address to your VPN server, it will never work.  I took the server out of the DCHP pool, and gave it a static IP.  Once I did that and correctly configured the interface on my server (be sure to setup the DNS correctly if you use static IP) I was able to get the VPN to work flawlessly.  Was even able to turn the Back to my Mac feature back on.
Don't know if this helps, but I have personally logged 3 days on this problem over the last 2 months.  I am pleased it is resolved.

  • Mountain Lion Server: Wiki and Profile Manager return 'Error Reading Settings'

    Hi,
Have recently installed Mountain Lion Server (clean install) when I open the Server App I am constantly receiving the following error messages on various services inc. Wiki and the Profile Manager Service
After clicking on various other services that error message evolves into
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nvm, I managed to resolve this issue to a degree. The errors seem to occur if I copied and installed the Server.app from a windows network location where I had it stored. However if I downloaded and installed the Server.app from the App store the errors dod not occur.

  • Weblogic server 9.1 upgrade problem

We had our application running on WLS 8.1.
Trying to upgrade to 9.2 using teh upgrade.sh script ( which uses 'java weblogic.Upgrade' inside ).
Even after it has reported that it has successfully upgraded the domain, when I login using the admin console, I see that the managed servrs are missing. So are all the resources ( JMS, connectionpool etc ) and all our EJBs.
Essentially we end up with a new admin server with nothing in it.
Has somebody else experienced this problem ?
If yes, are there any work arounds.

This was fixed by removing everything except teh following files from the original ( 8.1 ) domain directory
    1. config.xml
    2. SerializedSystemIni.dat
    3. *.ldift
    4. applications directory
Is this a bug in the upgrade tool ? Or did I miss a part of the documentation ?
    Thanks

  • Downgrade Lion to Leopard and upgrade Leopard Lion without Snow Leopard CD

    Hey guys,
Can I upgrade from Leopard to Lion without the Snow Leopard CD? I lost it.. And I want Lion or Snow Leopard back due to an image on my Time Capsule that Leopard doens't see.
I ran under Lion but wasn't happy with some of the features. I decided that I wanted to downgrade to either Leopard or Snow Leopard.
I made a back up on my Time Capsule. After it said Last back up 1 min ago I inserted my original CD (Leopard) since I couldn't find the Snow Leopard CD. I completed the reinstallation of MAC OS X and it ran super smoothly. Now Leopard didn't recognize my image (ofcourse since it was Lion) and all the work was done for nothing..
Now I really want to get back on Snow Leopard or Lion so I can reinstate my image and thus all programs and files that I now miss...
Problem: I don't have the Snow Leopard CD..... I can't download Snow Leopard and I can't download Lion because I don't have Snow Leopard... But I paid for both and I don't really want to buy both again just because I made a tiny mistake.
Any of you guys know how I can fix this??
I am now running version MAC OS X 10.5.8 and I'm getting a little annoyed! Lion was AWESOME compared to this version
    Cheers!!
    Max

    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.
I would assume the above may work to downgrade to Leopard by using the Leopard DVD instead of the Snow Leopard one.
If you purchased Snow Leopard then you should have the DVD. If not, then you might call AppleCare about a replacement or simply repurchase it.

  • LION SERVER - DO NOT UPGRADE - NO APPLE SUPPORT

I run a small independent business and use OS-X Server to support both my company and my family.  I had participated in the beta testing as part of the developer program (at my own expense) and filed my bugs and stayed quiet as I was supposed to do.  When Lion was finally released this week, I again did everything I was supposed to do - I made a complete back image of my SL server, I followed all of the instructions and preparations.  I knew what issues to exepct from my testing.  Everything should be good, right?
NO.  The final build behaved in a completely unpredictable way.  I even had to restore from back up and install again.  After hours of fighting the server.app tool I finally got mail back up for my users.  Thats the only sevice that runs.  All web based services are down.  iCal services are down.
I fought this for hours last night, finally giving up at about 1 AM.  I scheduled an express lane call with Apple at 9:15 this morning.  The people I talked to would and could do nothing except ask me to run the EDC and call back at some time next week, maybe engineering would have an answer then.  They would not even halpp me in trying to decode some of the cryptic console messages.  Nothing.
What makes this even worse is that Apple robbed me of all of the tools to try and troubleshoot the system myslef and affect the configuration.  All web, ical, and address book tools are gone from Server Admin.  This despite months of devforums posts begging Server Foundations for them.  I cant alter the files manually because Lion automatically rewries them on reboot or even opening server.app.
What am I left with?  A useless server that I can't administer.
Whats Apple Supports recommendation after being on the phone and trying to get someone to do anything other than blow me off:  Pay them for a $799 enterprise support ticket.  Seems they are an enterprise company finally - Forget the user unless they have an enterprise level bank account.
So finally, heres my technical issue:
7/23/11 9:16:23.496 AM org.apache.httpd: httpd: Syntax error on line 156 of /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Cannot load /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_auth_user_host_apple.so into server: dlopen(/usr/libexec/apache2/mod_auth_user_host_apple.so, 10): Library not loaded: /usr/lib/libproxyauth.dylib\n  Referenced from: /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_auth_user_host_apple.so\n  Reason: image not found
I have seen other users have this issue.  Anyone know what options I need to use to recompile everything for apache?  Anyway to hack lion to add the web tool back to server admin?
I have seen other users in my internet searches

Ok so this is the best forum.
This is specifically to anyone at apple from an enterprise mac admin
osx server 10.6 is amazing.  It is the closest thing to a truely awesome server software package.
osx -server 10.7 is about 20 thousand steps back.  I updated two of my dev servers and absolutely struggled for two days with zero success.
it started going down hill right when i found out that you can no longer get media. Needs to be downloaded and installed via app store.  Insanity! What motived that decision.  question? what happens when i need to reinstall software on a corporate network with proxy servers between you and internet?  That little recovery partition is smart until you go to restore a server and you realize that you cant because that boot partition is not configured to get through your proxy servers.  So now your stuck unless you had the foresight to copy the installer from the app store.
ok so you go to install the software and it goes well.(heads up:  that is the last time im saying that) Server boots up in a record five minutes(what).you log in and are instantly lost with the server.app.  Couldnt find a thing, i saw this menu that had everything but what i was looking for.  so after hunting around, then i found out that I needed to download the server admin tools.  so after i find, download and instal the tools, I connect to the server and notice some things are missing, like apf, smb, nfs, etc.  Netboot is off and pointed a different disk, open directory is off.  What happened?  So im upset that i now have to reconfigure my services. so i start out with directory services.  i recreate my OD master and restore my directory, but when i go to create my replica, i hit yet another snag.I am now getting an error message telling me that i cant create a replica because i am using the wrong account. nope im using the directory admin account that i just created.  long story, short i had to roll back to osx-server to 10.6.
now after reading a ton of post and articles and found out that you have dumbed everything down soo much that the server is useless.
Why have all of the tools that enterprise use, removed?I found that i have lost functionality.
have any other admins experienced osx server 10.7?

  • Can't access some websites and speed problem

    Hi guys,
I hope to find some help here please as I am desperate!
It has been a week now that I am having problems with my broadband, suddenly I can't access some italian's websites (which I was able to access before). The browser tries to load up the page but nothing happens (it doesn't even give me an error). I tried those website on both my laptops (one windows and one mac) and on 3 different browsers but I have the same problem.
I even tried to use Google DNS on my mac but that didn't solve the problem, I have already tried to reset my BT home hub but again that didn't help.
    Any ideas?
The other thing is that my broadband speed is really strange, because before it used to be very fast during the day (500-600 kb/s download) and really slow during peak-hours (which I know is normal). But for the past month it has been really slow (70kb/s download) even during the day, it has some brief moments when it's slightly faster but not as fast as before. Any suggestions on what would be the problem or what I can try?
I will really appreciate your help.
    Thank you all
    Robbie

  • Lion Server Permission Problems & MySql

This is a question in two parts so without further ado
    1. Ever since I got my mac mini server last year I have had issues with permissions. Even though there is only one account on the server, the one I created at setup I am always running into permissions problems. How is it that when I install something like wordpress I am later told I dont have permission to update etc - how can I not? With no other user on the machine just how is it possible? This has been a source of frustration for some time. Is there a hidden admin account or does the fact I am running the server headless therefore accessing remotely (but with the one and only account on the machine as login) have anything to do with it? This leads me onto my second question.
    2. I have upgraded to Lion server and whilst apple did mention all the wonderful things it does they failed to mention two very important things that they have removed - wireless remote install and mysql. My issue now is with mysql, previously it just worked but now I have had to install it myself which seemingly went smoothly. I use Sequel Pro to manage MySQL but now I am being told that I cannot create a new database or edit user lists because I dont have permission - again how can I possibly not as the only user on the machine?
Any help in either of these related questions would be greatly apprecated. The Lion server is a fresh install after the upgrade fubar'd mid install.
Just to add also - I am a person who bought this server on the apple sales pitch that 'anyone can use it' so terminal commands are beyond me. I can easily copy paste commands in but I have no clue as to what they mean :S

I managed to find the solution online - this page here sorted out my problem with MYSQL

  • Do you have to download Lion and also lion server , or just lion server ?

Do you have to download Lion and also lion server , or just lion server ?
And also will you have all the features of snow leopard server ?

Yeah it is a bunch of apps that you will download from the App store WWDC Keynote by Phil Schiller. "Server isn’t another operating system. It’s just a bunch of applications you can purchase to run on top of Lion. " And in terms of upgrading to Lion server, i read an article that explains the process as this:
"Snow Leopard Server - You can not upgrade to Lion directly. If you try to run the Lion installer on Snow Leopard Server, it will first look for the Server.app in the “Application” folder of the Mac. When you have that in place, the installer will first install Lion. Then, when it restarts, it will walk you thru some very minimal steps for the Server.app (hostname confirmation, admin email, etc). At that point, the Server.app will take your Snow Leopard Server settings and upgrade them. This will include migrating OD to 10.7, updating LDAP, importing data, etc. This can take some time. "
That is for snow leapard server specifically. If you come from a basic snow leapard installation, that is when you updrage to Lion and then download and install the server apps.

Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are four lines of text in monospaced type, which are UNIX shell commands. They’re harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of running these commands, search this site for other discussions in which they’ve been used without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
To begin, launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search.
    Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
    Step 4
    ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Sta}* 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Error configuring services from Snow Leopard Server to Mountain Lion Server

I am trying to upgrade a Snow Leopard Server Mac Mini to Mountain Lion Server.
We have two Mac Mini servers at our office (production and backup) so I migrated the everything from our production server to the backup using the migration assistant when setting up the backup computer.
I now have the backup at home trying to upgrade it to Mountain Lion Server.  I have downloaded and installed Mountain Lion as well as the Server App version 2.2.  I basically followed the simple directions found in the Apple documentation.
I started the server app and it got to the part where it said "Upgrading services".  After running for a few minutes, I get a window that states "An error occurred while configuring your server."  It also sayd "The following actions failed or were not attempted:" with a red dot next to "Upgrading services".  The other three items:  "Authenticating to local directory", "Reading directory configuration" and "Authenticating to local directory services" have gray dots so I'm sure they were not even attempted.
Our Snow Leopard server is setup for SMB file sharing, LDAP services, FTP, Web, DNS, DHCP.
Can someone point me to where I can figure out what exactly is failing?  Are there specific log files I need to look into?
    Thanks

Have EXACTLY the same issue - also tried reinstalling mountain lion server fresh and still had the same problem...

  • Lion Server Time Machine sparsebundles

Subject indicates where I think my problem lies, but for background:
MacBook Pro got bit by Thunderbolt firmware upgrade snafu last week. Contacted Apple Store the next morning, saw Genius at 11:00. Concuded hardware and firmware were OK and because I had a Time Machine backup less than an hour old I gave permission to install a fresh 10.7.3 image on my bare metal.
Got home and booted Command-R. Happily saw my Time Machine shares on Mac Mini Server running Lion Server 10.7.4. Yes, "shares." A Backup and Backup-1.
As a Lion Server novice I found a tip here to "defaults write /private/var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/sharepoints/Backups timeMachineBackup '(1)' to make my shared mountpoint work with Time Machine over the network. Perhaps thats how one does it if one doesn't have Server. I later found the Time Machine panel in Server and turning that on gave me a Backups-1 share as well.
So back with Command-R my MacBook Pro saw both the Backups and Backups-1, I navigated to Backups and it saw its previous Time Machine archive. I started a bare metal restore and happily went to bed. Next morning found the restore stopped at about 20% of the progress bar and message instructing me to reboot the computer. Repeated, same results.
Back to Command-R I reinstalled a new copy of Lion from Apple over the internet. Did minimal configuration until I could get into Time Machine and try to manually pull files. Again it quit unexpectedly no matter holding the Option key to Verify Backups passed.
So back to the Mac Mini Server I turn off Sharing from System Preferences and Time Machine from Server. The /private/var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/sharepoints/Backups file disappears when Server Time Machine is turned off.
I have attempted to move "David Kelly's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" from "/Volumes/Macintosh HD2/Backups" to "/Volumes/Macintosh HD2/Shared Items/Backups" where Server Time Machine seems to expect it. The problem now is that the MacBook Pro doesn't see this Time Machine archive in that location, or see it at all.
I have performed the Disk Utility verify tasks listed in the Time Machine FAQ with no errors found or repaired.
I have seen a -6584 error this week but don't remember exactly when: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3123920?start=0&tstart=0
How can I get the sparsebundle back under Time Machine Server?

Finally figured it out on my own 2 weeks later.
You have to open the Lion Server app and then turn on Time Machine on the server.
It will then ask what disk you want to use, which in my case was an external 2tb USB.
My confusion was that this is not they way you had to do it on Snow Leopard Server.
On SLS, I never used Time Machine, but had to partition my external disk individually for each user.  e.g.  2tb disk was partioned into 4 separate volumes.  This was necessary to keep one user's Time Machine backup from taking up the whole disk and not leaving room for the other users.
You then setup these partitions as Time Machine Sharepoint which would then show up as a choice on the users machine under Time Machine preferences, select disks.
Therefore, under SLS, a user could select from any number of partions to backup to on the server.  On Lion Server, it appears you do not have a choice and can only backup to the one disk you selected on the Server App.
At the risk of carrying on a conversation with myself online, my concern is now about limiting the size of the individual user's sparse bundle to again keep one user from taking up the entire disk for their Time Machine.  I guess that is another fight for another day.
