Listening to mp3 cds without importing

I know that itunes doesn't mount the disk as it would an audio disk (unfortunate). So given that, is there a script, or other method, that can help me listen to mp3 disks without leaving orphaned files in my library?
The real issue is that there is limited disk space on the computer, therefore I want to keep the files on the disk only - having access to those files ONLY when the disk is inserted.
(One of the other issues in this scenario is that even if I could deal with the orphaned files while the disk is not inserted, when the disk IS inserted again, the songs are not automatically re-linked. I know this is just the way itunes works, but it's also unfortunate.)
Anyone have any help with this? Does the scripting library allow for a workaround?

Thanks, but that functionality only works for Audio CDs.

And this is my problem exactly.

While I appreciate this possibility as a workaround, it's really not going to be sufficient for me in my quest to make iTunes work for the MP3 disks.
For those still reading this and willing to offer some scripting help: I discovered something that gives me hope...
In Automator, there is an item called "Filter Sources in iTunes". Within that, you can select "Kind"-"Is"-"MP3 CD". I can't seem to get this to filter my MP3 disk items, but it gives me hope that there might be a way via scripting to get a workaround.
Does anyone have any advanced iTunes scripting skills that could shed some light on this for me?

Is it possible to insert an MP3 CD into your CD Drive and import it into itunes and have it stay in your library permanently?

Yes.
You do not technically 'Import' MP3 files. Importing (within the iTunes program) is done with Audio CDs.
You will need to 'Add' the MP3s to your iTunes Library.
With the MP3 CD in the drive, go to 'File=>Add Folder' and browse to the CD drive. As long as you have the 'Copy Files to iTunes Music Folder when Adding to Library' selection checked, the MP3 will be copied to your PC and added into iTunes.
This sometimes does not work as well as expected. In that case, just copy the complete MP3 CD to your PC (say the Desktop or another location you can find), then use the File=>Add Folder within iTunes to move them into iTunes. Drag&Drop will work here, too.

Likely that CD then. Check visually for damage, blemishes, etc., not that there's anything you can really do about those other than return the CD.
The drive sits there and spins because it is trying to re-read the CD. iTunes has error correction which is contributing to all this re-reading, I believe, and you may be able to disable that in preferences if you aren't picky about the result.
You can also try other rippers such as Max or XLD. I know those have configurable error correction. I like XLD but it is slightly tricky to use until you find that for some reason the author has put all settings under preferences, not just the set once and forget ones.

Prior versions of iTunes would ask whether I wanted to import duplicate songs when I inserted a CD, but this feature seems to have gone away in iTunes 11. (Though if this feature does exist and can be enabled, that would be the ideal solution.) Importing the entire CD and then searching and deleting duplicates is less than optimal, as I have a massive music library and a lot of CDs to import, many with duplicates. Thanks in advance!

Alternatively, create another user account in your computer. Install iTunes in that account with the library you wish to sync.

Possible to join mp3 files on Import?

I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and I manage them with iTunes. These are books not bought through the iTunes store, but borrowed from my local library.
I only recently discovered the joys of "Joining tracks" to make a single file for each CD, etc. ( It's terrific to have a single file fper CD rather than the myriad tracks that make up an audiobook).
However..
I have heaps of books that I have already loaded into itunes without joining the tracks - and I would like to redo them somehow.
Does anyone have any easy way to do this? I know I can re-borrow the books or burn them to a CD or burn them to a "virtual" CD and reimport, etc - but that's infernally tedious.
I can copy them off to a folder as mp3 files, then import them back (Add file to library, etc) - but I don't know how to join them when I do this, or if there is a way. (??)
Any suggestion would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, but I noticed that one of the suggested links on the right seemed to be in the area, so I went nosing around.
Turned out to be an excellent suggestion on using external software to join the MP3s (my bad! should've thought of that ages ago...) and create an audiobook file that iTunes will recognize.
(In fact I knew that once it's a continuous mp3 you can just define it as Audiobook media in iTunes, etc)
I had to search around a bit as the tried and tested software is for the Mac - but I wound up finding a little freeware gem called MergeMp3. It's lightweight but effective and what I liked was that it has various sorting options that the better known "Mp3 to Ipod Audiobook Converter" does not have.
(Also I could get it off the author's web site rather than using CNET's wretched download manager that lights up every malware alarm on my PC...)
All good now and ready to shrink my zillion audibook itty bitty files.

Burning music CDs without toast

I'd like to burn a copy of a music CD without the music converting to MP3 format. My understanding is that if I burn a CD using iTunes, the music automatically converts to MP3 format. Is there another way of burning CDs without converting it to MP3 format without purchasing Toast or another such program? Is there already Toast-like software on my computer (an iMac G5 purchased in January) which I am unaware of which would avoid this MP3 problem? Many thanks.

Just to expand on that a tad, to use itunes, you will need to import the tracks from the cd, then create a playlist with those tracks and burn the disc.
Check your itunes preferences under "importing" and "burning". Set the importing to "Aiff", and the burning to "Audio cd". That way there is no quality loss. You could import as an mp3 also to save disk space if needed, and itunes will convert them during the burning process if the preference is set to "audio cd".

I have seen several threads (in forums), books and tutorials about SWING and I see that they all mix SWING with AWT (I mean they import both Swing and AWT in their code).
The conclusion that comes out is:
It is good to learn about SWING and forget AWT as it won't be supported later. I have decided to do so, and I never include <<import java.awt.*;>> in my code.
But I see that you cannot do much without <<import java.awt.*;>>. For example this line which changes the background color:

works only with <<import java.awt.*;>>. I have seen that codes in this and other forums import awt to change the background. Why is that?

Since swing is a layer on top of awt, AWT will exist for as long as swing does.
If sun does ever remove AWT they will have to replace it something else swing can layer on to and you will probably only have to replace your import statements.
The main difference is the way there drawn to the screen.
You can do custom drawing on swing components but you can't on AWT.
If your using a desktop PC system it's probably best to use swing just in case you wish to do some custom drawing.
awt uses less memory than swing and is faster but swing can be extended. awt comes only as standard.
Say for example you wish to implement a JButton with a ProgressBar below the button text, this can be done with swing!

Thank you, I understand, yeah, I knew that, my phone is factory unlocked and I am going home, which is obviously not in the States and I am thinking of buying a local carrier there. However, I still have 2 weeks before I leave and cannnot wait to start using my Iphone 4. I thought at least I could use the mp3 player function. IPhoto 08 adding pics without importing them?

I purchased a Mac with iPhoto 08 installed. My photos are all stored on an external drive. There is not enough room on the internal drive to just import the library to iPhoto. My question here is how do I point iPhoto to the picture files on the external drive without iphoto bringing them over to the internal drive and using up what little space I have? In itunes I can "add to library" and point it to the music files in the "Music" folder, I have created in the external hard drive and it will add those mp3 files to the library without importing the files. So how can I do that with iPhoto?

You can do that simply enough but you really want to think that through very carefully. It's called using a Referenced Library, and it has a number of pitfalls that you need to be aware of - especially if you want the Library on one volume and the photos stored on another. This thread

MP3 CDs won't work in car stereo

Hello. I've tried multiple burning tests with iTunes, Toast, and the Finder. I'm trying to get an MP3 CD to work in my 2007 Mazda 6 (five CD changer). The manual says it will read MP3 CDs, and I am burning MP3s... not AACs. When the CD is loaded into my car, I only get track 1 without any audio. Time does elapse as if it is playing something, but I don't hear anything. If I try to skip to the next track, it stays on track 1. I can even search through track 1... but still no audio.
Has anyone had any luck making an MP3 CD with Mac software? Would you mind listing the steps you took in order to create one? Thank you!

I have just started using a Trial version of Premiere.
I have a folder full of corrupted MP3 files after attempting to import them into Premiere.
After searching these forums I found that some other people have had corruption issues during import of media and it was related to the Preferences->Media->"Write XMP ID to Files on Import" option.
I attempted to import additional MP3s (this time making backups first) with and without the Write XMP ID option, and have found that this is where the issue is.
While the MP3 files still fail to be imported, the files are not corrupted in the process when the Write XMP ID option is unchecked.
Writing to files that are being imported seems to me like unexpected behaviour for any software.
Adobe please advise!

MP3 CDs from iTunes on stand-alone DVD players

I was reading a couple of threads in this forum on that topic and here are my observations:
Until now I have been burning MP3 CDs in iTunes only as a backup, not for actual listening.
Recently we have purchased a rather cheap stand-alone Grundig DVD player for watching movies, it is also MP3 CD-R/DVD-R compatible. It will play any CD-R or DVD-R with MP3 files on it that has been burned in the standard ISO 9660 or Mac-Hybrid format, either on a PC or using Toast.
The player will not recognize any MP3 CD burned using iTunes 4.x or 6.x, either on an iBook G3 or a Powerbook G4. This is not due to bad or cheap media, all of those CDs show up in iTunes and play correctly. I'm using Sony CD-Rs and I haven't had a single problem with hundreds of them in the past few years. I use them mostly for data backup or for sending client's files to a print office.
If I copy the data from an iTunes MP3 CD to Toast and burn them as an MP3 CD using Toast, the CD will play fine in the DVD player.
So, my summary:
There's definitely something wrong with the way iTunes creates an MP3 CD.
Personally, I don't care much though. If I ever "desperately" needed an MP3 CD to play in that DVD player, a copy of my backup CDs using Toast is done quickly and costs near to nothing.

Making MP3 CDs from iTunes purchases.

My car can read MP3 CDs and I don't recall having this issue with the old iTunes software but it could be coincidence.
Anyway over the past several months I've been using XM since my MacBook Pro with Retina display doesn't have a CD Burner on it. Well a buddy of mine gave me his old super drive so I decided to burn an MP3 CD but I was greeted with the message, "MP3s can only be added to MP3 CDs" or something along those lines. I noticed that it was my iTunes purchased songs wouldn't convert to be added to the CD.
What's the easiest way to fix this problem?

An "MP3 CD" is really nothing more than a data CD. There's nothing special about it except that all the files on it are MP3s. Tracks purchased from the iTunes Store are not .mp3 files; they are AAC files with an extension of .m4a.
You can cross convert an AAC file to MP3, but you should be aware that you will be losing quality that may affect what you hear. Before you do this check the manual for the head unit in the car and see if it also reads AAC files. If it does you'll be able to burn a data CD with the iTunes Store purchases, no problem.
To convert AAC to MP3, in iTunes 11, open iTunes prefs > General and click Import Settings. Change the import settings to what you want them to be. OK out of the dialogs. Find the tracks you wish to convert in the iTunes Library, highlight them, right-click (or Control+click) and choose "create MP3 version." This will create a new tracks that can now be burned to an "mp3 cd."

Will the FLVPlayback component play MP3's without FMS?

Will the FLVPlayback Component (version 2.5.0.15) play an MP3 file without it having to be streamed through a Flash Media Server? All I'm looking for is to place a player into my Flash that plays an MP3 file that's in the same directory as the SWF.
