Living in a post iWork '09 world

Lots of us aren't thrilled with this new iWork package and while it might be good for us all in the future (like bad tasting medicine) right now the picture isn't so bright. So what is an iWork user supposed to do?
Thankfully upgrading to iWork '13 didn't delete our beloved iWork '09 applications and despite some confusion, Mavericks and iWork '09 get along just fine for the most part. There are a few gotchas, mostly having to do with iCloud integration. The Merging Inspector is broken but merges can still be done by using the Merge Field option of the Insert menu. Those are the only two problems I've found and I've been using iWork '09 and Mavs for quite a long time. I'm not saying we won't find more issues and I'm not saying that a year from now the next version of OS X won't break iWork '09 more. But for now there is no reason we can't continue using iWork '09. DropBox has been my preferred method of syncing between the Mac and iPad and I don't see that changing.
If you bought your iWork '09 programs through the Mac Apple Store do not delete them and do backup your computer now. I don't know if Apple will continue to make the old version available to us but they are gone from the Apple Store so it will take some effort on our part to get them restored to our computer if we delete them. On the other hand, if you have no desire to use the new iWork 2013 programs you can safely delete them. Now that you have downloaded the new programs they are in your purchased list and can be downloaded again in the future, at least until a new new version is released. (May that be soon please!) Peter has suggested putting the new iWork programs into a Disk Image which is nice way to put them aside without deleting them.
The two versions of iWork can co-exist on your computer peacefully with one caveat - double-clicking on a file will open it in the new version of Pages (or Numbers or Keynote). This is standard procedure and it works the same for other programs such as Microsoft Word '08 and Word '11. I'm in the habit of dragging files to the Dock so this doesn't affect me much. If you do accidentally open a file in Pages 5 and it didn't go well, just be sure you don't save the file - and if you do save it be aware that under export you can export a Pages '09 file. Warning: I've done this and it works but I haven't tested it fully so it is possible that exporting a Pages 5 file to Pages 4 can lead to formatting issues. TimeMachine may be your best friend to restore a file that Pages 5 mangles.
While I will miss many features of iWork '09 I do find much to like about the new Pages and I intend to use both it and the old version. I've always preferred small single purpose applications to monolithic monsters; that's why I dislike Microsoft Office so much. My writing arsenal includes Pages, Scrivener, WriteRoom (and MS Word when I must). Adding another version of Pages to the mix doesn't bother me - especially if Apple has finally gotten iCloud syncing to work reliably. Having an iPad version of iWork that can truly edit and extend what I've created on my Mac plus having the browser version available when the only computer at hand doesn't have iWork is a big win for me. My iPad is a production tool and not just a consumer of media so I'm excited about the new parity between Pages for Mac and iPad even though it does mean some lost features.
Finally, we need to use the Feedback item under the Pages menu to let Apple know what features we want back and what needs to be fixed. Having worked at various customer support jobs in the past I know that abusive, insulting, and antagonistic communications go to the bottom of the pile and ultimately the round filing cabinet. If you want to see iWork improved make your feedback constructive. My approach has always been to write one feedback message per issue and to explain why the feature was needed (or was badly implemented, whatever) and how users and Apple will benefit from fixing it. Short, to the point, polite; that's how to get positive attention. I honestly believe we'll see an improved iWork and that it won't take 4 years. We can influence how Apple improves the program if we use feedback to provide constructive criticism and suggestions.

Just one important caveat to add to it. Like dwb, I am heavily reliant on Dropbox. And Dropbox will sync Pages 5.0 files fine, across various Macs. However, Pages 5.0 files stored on Dropbox are NO LONGER accessible to Pages in iOS7.
If you access a Pages 5.0 file in the iOS version of Dropbox and then try to open it in the new iOS version of Pages, Pages for iOS will fail to open the Pages 5.0 file. This holds true for Google Drive and Skydrive as well. As far as I can tell, the only way to get access to your Pages 5.0 files while on your iOS device is to have the files already in iCloud (or otherwise to "send them to yourself").
I have thousands of Pages files on my Dropbox (I'm not moving them all to iCloud), and if I open and save any of them in Pages 5.0 on my Mac they are now no longer accessible to me, through Dropbox, on my iPad.
This makes it even harder to try to incorporate the new version of Pages into one's workflow.
And unlike some others, I am less critical of Apple for taking away features in Pages 5.0, as I recognize the future upside of having seamless compatibilty between iOS Pages and Mac OS Pages. However, I am appalled that there are basic text editing bugs in Pages 5.0 (see my other post, or just test this out: type something in italics, then hit return; then, before typing on the new line, try to toggle italics off; can't be done).
I now have to revert to Pages 4.3, but even that is hard to do given that all Pages files opened on my iPad will be "updated."

I have a powershell script that is collecting AD accounts from within a certain OU that expire in the next 30 days. My problem is I cant get it to also display the displayName as a field as well as sort the formatting.
The fullname is coming up blank for me. I know if I add the following line it will sort it but having issues determining where to do so... Where can I find Final Cut Studio retail?

As a graduate of Media hoping to get into the industry as an editor, I find myself in the difficult position of trying to find a retail copy of Final Cut Studio. Every retailer I've searched no longer stocks the software. I'm worried that I may not be able to get hold of a copy and will be forced to download Final Cut Pro X, despite the fact it has recieved terrible reviews and would rather get the older, better software.
Has Apple phased Studio out of retail because if they have, that's not something I wanted to hear.

In the technology world, especially in the world of video with an ever increasing number of codecs being introduced each year, it would be a reasonable assumption that software that's already two years old (FCP 7) and will never be developed or updated in any way, will only be good for about two to four years. And that's assuming that you have access to the hardware that supports the older software. It's my personal prediction that Apple will drop the MacPro line of desktops within the next couple of years. With their move to iOS and consumer gadgets and software, coupled with the fact that it is generally the video and audio professionals that use beefy desktop system, and the fact that Apple is clearly shifted its focus away from the professional crowd, what will you do when you need new or replacement hardware to run this old, EOL software on and Apple has nothing to offer?
Since you're just starting out, my advice to you would be to start learning actual professional editing software and I'd further strongly suggest that you do that on a different platform than a Mac. If you can find FCS 3 and have a decent system to run it on, great; you can use that as well. But I'd plan for an Apple-free future if you want to make a living in video post-production.
I don't make these statements lightly; after all these years using Apple products, I find it's just a sad fact.

QuickTime & Security upgrades--system will not boot

Hello. I'm new to the posting/discussion board world, and while I have reviewed other threads I haven't found anything yet to solve my problem.
Let me say that I am not sure of the particular OS version I am using (10.4.8 is a guess). Since I tried to install the QT/security update last weekend, my iMac gets to a point where something (either the hardrive or the fan, or both) are making considerable noise. The machine sounds like it's trying to take off.
Having browsed some other threads, I have done these things:
I booted the computer using my system installation disk; ran Disk Utilities; repaired the disk; and verified disk permissions. Initially, the repair-disk function did not succeed, but I have run it again and it indicated success. I have fixed disk permissions and verified them, again apparently successfully.
When I attempt to boot, the gray screen comes up but after approximately one minute a circle appears where the Apple ought to be and the harddrive/fan ramps up to take-off speed. Out of fear for the system I do not let this condition continue for more than a few minutes and I turn the machine off by pressing the power button for several seconds. It seems clear that it won't boot.
I have not been able to boot into safe mode, either, if that means holding down the shift key upon power up.
I am now lost as to what I can do without attempting to re-install OS X from the disk or seeking other professional help. I sincerely appreciate any assistance in this matter.

1. If I ensure that the disk permissions are repaired/verified, can/should I go ahead and update my system with the 10.4.11 update?
2. Do I maintain the "previous system" file on my harddisk, or can I safely delete it?

DPS Feedback From Client: A Book Publisher's Perspective

I thought it might be helpful to both Adobe and other publishers to post some real-world feedback from one of our clients.
But first, some background:
We are a book publisher moving into the realm of book apps. Our book apps or not at all like their printed counterparts and mix in a bunch of new content and interactive features. Our apps are also not like magazines, which is what DPS feels like it was designed for.
We've been doing some testing with DPS, especially as it relates to a business model for us and our clients. We've also been testing resolutions, and figuring out the differences between single-issue and multi-issue apps.

Below is a continuation of our DPS discovery process. At the same time we are exploring HTML5/CSS3/Javascript development with Baker. Although we've developed our own webapps, run everything in Amazon's cloud (ec2, s3) and have a development team familiar with everything needed to get a book app out via HTML, we are giving DPS a fair shot because we've invested so much money in Adobe's software and we'd rather our production team handle book apps instead of our development team.
With all of that said as a backdrop, we presented an interested client with the option of publishing two single-issue apps (iPad 1/2 and iPad 3) or publishing one multi-issue app.
Pricing wise, we kept our design fees the same with either option. The only pricing difference was $395x2 for the single-issue app route vs. a monthly charge to help us offset Adobe's monthly charge for the multi-issue app.
The questions from the client and answers from us went like this, in roughly this order:
Q: With the single-issue app, we don't pay an ongoing monthly fee?
A: Correct. It's just the up-front per-app fee.
Q: And in the multi-issue app arrangement, it doesn't matter how little our sales trickle in 6-9 months down the line, we're still paying the monthly fee if we want to have the app for sale at all?
A: Yes.
Q: Does either option limit us in terms of how long the app will be available for download?
A: No. Both options allow for ongoing sales of the app. The primary difference being you pay monthly to keep the app "alive" for multi-issue apps whereas single-issue apps live indefinitely with no monthly cost.
Q: So it seems like single-issue apps are the way for us.
A: From a pricing standpoint alone, yes, because most of your app sales will occur in the first month or two and single-issue apps do not carry any monthly costs down the line. That said, single-issue apps have some serious limitations.
Q: Like?
A: For starters, we would have to develop two apps to target iPad 1/2 and iPad 3.
Q: So the customer would have to make the choice? We are expecting the customer to get technical and figure out which app is for their device?
A: Yes. Renditions only exist in multi-issue apps, currently.
Q: Let's suppose we can get over that because eventually we will want to develop an Android version and a Kindle Fire version and in that case we are expecting customers to know which app works on their device...
A: Let me stop you there. Single-issue apps only work for iPad.
Q: So if we go the single-issue route, we simply can't ever develop an Android or Kindle Fire app?
A: Not as a single-issue app for any other platform than iPad. If it was essential you release on other platforms, we could look into converting the single-issue app into a multi-issue app later on, although we'd be looking at that monthly charge again.
Q: Right, which simply doesn't make sense for our app because of its timely nature.
A: We agree. Let's give up developing for other platforms for now and even indefinitely and focus in on just the iPad single-issue app development.
Q: Okay. So we release two apps, one for iPad 1/2 and one for iPad 3 using single-issue apps. What if we want to update the app down the road? Do we update both apps at once?
A: Actually, with single-issue apps, you can't update the app. Once it's submitted to Apple, it's locked in once and for all. Only multi-issue apps can be updated.
Q: That's another serious issue for us. Are there any other limitations we haven't discussed?
A: There are two more limitations: 1) Single-issue apps rely on the latest version of Adobe Content Viewer approved by Apple. Currently, version 19 of Adobe's DPS tools work with the Adobe Content Viewer that's approved and live in the App Store. That means we can develop your app using v19 of Adobe's tools but will have to hold off on updating to v20. This isn't so much a real issue as a potential issue. If, for example, v20 has some killer feature you really want to have, we simply couldn't use it. 2) Single-issue apps have no analytics.
Q: With all of these limitations, we're going to have to discuss internally which way to go. What's your recommendation?
A: All things considered, we think single-issue apps is the best solution now for your app. We have no exact target sales numbers in mind, but it's almost a certainty you will sell 80% of all app sales in the first 1-2 months. Knowing you want to keep the app available indefinitely means a single-issue app is the only way to go.
After two days and a few conference calls, the client decided to move forward with two single-issue apps, although a bit begrudgingly. We didn't pull any punches and let them know we expect Adobe to spend some time refining their pricing strategy and unifying the feature set as the technology starts to grow up. At this point, the seemingly wonky pricing structure and feature parity is the cost of being on the bleeding edge.
And we are now jumping into developing the app with DPS for our client. I should say, however, we are also working quickly to come up with a viable HTML5 route for publishing to avoid Adobe's system altogether. At this point I anticipate we will move to HTML in the next 2-5 months if Adobe's pricing/features don't start to move toward what we need. If we do jump to HTML, the answer to most clients' questions will be, "we can do that; for cheap; on all devices" and so on, which is a pretty attractive thing.
This ended up being considerably longer than I had originally envisioned, but my hope is it is useful for Adobe in refining the product and helpful for other publishers just starting down the DPS path.

Agreed. It wouldn't be right for us to pass on Adobe DPS' entire monthly charge to one client, and we have no plans to do so. We are still fine tuning the amount we would pass on to each client.
From our perspective, we are hesitant to invest anything at all in the multi-issue route because other paths to digital publishing/apps are looking more and more attractive. If we put out a handful of DPS multi-issue apps now (say, 4-5) then jump to HTML in 3-6 months, we will have to maintain Adobe's monthly fee indefinitely for the first 4-5 apps. It's as if we are paying Adobe for the right to be locked into paying Adobe monthly. No thanks.
From the client's perspective, even if the monthly amount we pass on is minimal, simple math shows at some point monthly sales will not cover the monthly carrying cost. When that point comes is pretty crucial to figure out, but it's likely it will come in month 2 or 3, which means the client would be forced to pull the app from the app store just 2-3 months after its release.
I keep trying to find a parallel for the business model in this new book app world. What is Adobe's role if we were talking traditional book publishing?
- The book store? No, that's the role of whichever app store the app is sold through (Apple's App Store, Android Market, etc.).
- The distributor? Possibly, since you could consider Adobe hosting the files as a type of distribution service (although, I'd prefer to host it all myself). If Adobe is the distributor, $0.30/download seems reasonable.
- The press? I suppose this could be argued since Adobe takes an input of files and outputs an app like a press takes an input of files and outputs a printed product. That's sorta like a press. But if that's the case, a per app fee (or even a per download fee) makes more sense than a monthly carrying cost. We don't pay our presses monthly after they've printed our books for the right to sell them.
Obviously, there's a flaw in thinking about this new world in old ways, but I'd still like to figure out exactly what Adobe's role is and why we (or our clients) would pay Adobe monthly. If, for example, Adobe's pricing scheme was something more like $400 per app created (with all features like renditions, updates, social sharing, etc.) + $0.30 per download to host the file with an option to bypass Adobe's (shaky) hosting service, we'd jump into DPS with no reservations and be publishing dozens of apps per year. Instead, we're dabbling with publishing one app and working as quickly as possible to find other solutions, which would eventually lead to converting our Adobe Create Suite based production team to an HTML/CSS/Javascript team.

I need more INPUT (not MENU) languages in my E90!

Though E90 Communicator is awesome in majority of functions, usability and comparatively perfect in production quality, it lacks some features that I as business-user definitely need.
The most disappointing issue for me is the language issue. While the "normal" phones have 6 to 8 languages pro firmware/product code, the E90 has only 3!!! (Maybe 4 in APAC region but i do not care.)
I'll try to explain shortly. As a businessman who lives in Germany and is a native Russian-speaker, I have a LOT of partners/clients/friends who do prefer to have a communication profile with me in Russian. I have almost the same amount of people with whom I need to communicate in German or French. The tragic truth is that I cannot approach this with the actual firmware situation on E90.
If I would buy my Nokia E90 in Russia, I would get the predefined languages of English, Russian and Ukrainian. That is nice, but in this case I cannot write in German as it should be written, saying with Ö, Ä, Ü, ß and so on. I also could not use some of the French special characters. If I would use E90 only as a SMS machine, it might be OK. But I use it more likely as a travel PC replacement the device pretend to be, so I use e-mail and document editing, where the lack of those characters are intolerable.
Besides all, I live in Germany and am a client of German service provider, so why should I probably buy the device outside of Germany? So think I and so I doing, saying I renewed my service contract and bought the E90.
In German firmware I got another three (!!!) languages: German, English and Turkish. Wonderful. I may speak out about the pure discrimination from the Nokia side: in Germany we have the same amount of Russian speakers as Turkish fellow ones, both about 8,000,000 persons each. ;-) So why Turkish and not Russian, Italian or French? Every of those "communities" has equal rights, am I right?! Hei, Nokia! Do you hear my voice?!
Is it really so hard to understand, that an ULTIMATE BUSINESS SOLUTION as E90 definitely would be preferred by the people, who really use it - really intensive - as a communication device?! Is it really hard to understand, that thousands of them would get e-mails and documents while on the road that definitely need to be urgent answered some other language than 3 preinstalled?! Should I change the firmware of my phone every time I need to answer e-mail in French or edit the financial contract for my Russian partner?!
Ridiculous and disappointing - what else should I say?! Especially because I know, that the situation as easy to fix from the Nokia side as a single mouse click.
I am sure there are people reading and writing to this Forum who needs for example Chinese Mandarin and German, or Hindi and Farsi, or Arabic and Spanish simultaniously. There is no way to understand why it is impossible to choose the INPUT languages - I do NOT speak about the MENU languages and never pretend to.
So, because this Forum is Nokia's piece of land and Nokia has kindly allowed us to cry out here what I do really appreciate, I want definitely get the answer to following questions:
1) Is it possible to add some INPUT (once again - NOT menu, just INPUT) languages to E90 firmware?
2) If yes, when?
3) If not, what is the reason? The reason - please, no "technical excuses", because I am not that stupid, OK? ;-)
We are living in such a damn globalized world, aren't we? So let's be really globalized and let's help us ourselves to get out the most from this.

Since Windows 98 is absolutely not a problem to add ANY input language in ANY localized version of the OS. I do know that Symbian OS has at least the same flexibility options.
Once again: I do not pretend to have any other MENU language - I simply do not need it. But the possibility to choose more INPUT language is simply and quickly to add, that is what I am asking for.
Maybe your statistic research is right, I do not want to argue with you. More than that, this is exactly I expected as an excuse option: "Marginal request". But no, it is not. The device would probably have higher customer interest when the free input would be represented.
Your advice to use laptop instead of E90 is highly appreciated, but it is not unique enough to be accepted "as is". ;-) The idea of E90 as well as previous communicators was to give the customer an option to leave her/his laptop at home and make a 1 or 2 day business trip as lite as possible in every meaning of the word "lite". I have 2 laptops already, 1 Panasonic for traveling and IBM Z61p Workstation as a desktop replacement. I should say that Panasonic, while being one of the best travel-oriented devices on the market, with its almost 2 Kilo travel weight and about 1 minute power-up/power-down time is completely insufficient as a communicator replacement. In addition to it you need a businesscard-scanner and a digicam, you are constantly out of power and so on. It is or will be the same story with UMPC. The only option until now was HTC/Qtek 9000, the most powerful and well-equipped device on the market. But it is completely useless as a phone and its camera is a disaster, so I switched to E90 because of its awesome usability as a phone, a digicam and as a communicator simultaneously just because I HATE to carry on 12 hours a day here and there a 5 Kilo bag with laptop, phone, camera, cables, batteries and other damned stuff around. I am just SICK and TIRED of this and I dreamed about the device that can make free from all that - for YEARS!!!
I remember my conversation with Nokia people at its CeBIT Stand in late 1990-es - the concept was already here, but the materialization of my dreams took Nokia R&D almost a decade. And now, when it is already in my hands, it lacks such a damn little thing to be as perfect as possible! ;-)
I am not that crazy - "perfect" does not mean really perfect. Of course there are and there would be minor and major bugs with later fixes and improvements. Because of the possibility of fixes and improvements I insist on one of the most critical for me. I understand as well, that it needs neither additional research nor hardware changes. All you need to to do is a little software module to be added and/or replaced. The Occam Razor Rule is still in my mind. ;-)

How to tell if an app is "Universal Binary" i.e. Intel-compatible?

I have various freeware and shareware apps on my new MacBook Pro which I "migrated" over from an old PowerBook G4 which I had been using until getting my new MBP last week. To whatever extent possible, I want to avoid using old PowerPC-chip designed apps, since they'd have to go through Rosetta translation in order to work, but using Rosetta extensively slows down Snow Leopard's snappy response time.
So, I want to make sure that each app is designed to be Intel-compatible. And if it isn't, I will try to track down a newer version, or if there aren't any, then find a replacement app that will do the same function.
However, I don't have documentation or "read me" files for most of these older share/freeware applications, so it's not easy to tell just from "looking at them" whether or not they were written in Universal Binary (or in some other Intel-compatible way). One could always look at the date the application was made, and if it's really really old, then one could assume that it's not Intel compatible; and if it's really really new, then one could assume that it is compatible. Unfortunately, most of the apps are from that exact transitional period when some apps were made for PowerPC, some for Intel, and some Universal Binary, etc. -- mostly they're from the 2006-2009 era.
So: Is there some method for "peering inside" applications to see if they're written in Universal Binary?
As an example:
I have a program called flvThing 1.0.1. If I control-click its icon, choose "Show package contents," then go flvThing>Contents>MacOS>flvThing, and do "Get Info" on the excutable file therein, it says "Unix Executable File (Universal)." Does that mean that it was written in Universal Binary?
If that's true, can I use this same method to peer inside most/any apps and see if they are a "Unix Executable File (Universal)"? Or is there some other method for finding this out?
Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Two follow-up questions:
1. I see five ancient apps listed as being "Classic." I presume that I might as well Trash those right now, since no Classic apps will ever run in the Post-Snow-Leopard world? None of these five Classic apps are important or necessary, so trashing them is not a problem.
2. Some of my Intel apps are listed as being 64-bit, and some as not 64-bit. Should this concern me? Does it matter? I presume that both 64-bit Intel apps and non-64-bit Intel apps will both work perfectly fine on my i5 MacBook Pro 15" -- right?

Why do all IOS upgrades fail from my MBP?

This isn't the most critical post in the world (I have work around available)... I have not been able to simply update any IOS device from my MBP, I always have the same problem the update hangs mid stream (after the IOS device reboots, and the new IOS is being installed (the progress bar on the IOS device stops in the last 10%)).

iPhone 3g (can't remember all of the IOS that I had on that phone but I am guessing IOS 3 - IOS 4.3.2)
iPhone 4 (IOS 4 - IOS 5.0.1)
iPhone 4S (I just got it, and I don't remember upgrading it, though I probably did it unteathered).
iPad 2 (IOS 4.something - IOS 5 <- trying to go up to IOS 5.0.1).

For years I've tried to reinstall itunes, I've tried different cables, I even upgraded my os to Lion, I always have the same problem... my solution has always been the same take it to my Windows PC, factory reinstall then restore from my MBP. For the future I guess I will use the Wi-Fi update, but it's very annoying that I can't use my MBP to upgrade my IOS devices... and kind of a slap that I have to use my Windows PC to fix the problems caused by my Mac... anyone else had this problem?

Quicktime has messed up my podcasts visuals

Since installing Quicktime 7.1.6 the visuals ( still photographs) on my .mac webpage will no longer play. I get a picture of the Quicktme logo and the mesage "this enhanced podcast requires Quicktime 7.0.2 or later". Everything seemed to work fine until I downloaded the new version of Quicktime. Any suggestions?

At best, all I can offer are suggestions. May you and any other that reads them, find each at least worth considering.
I share your dilemma and it appears (from the number of messages posted) many others do too. I can only conclude this latest upgrade of QT 7.1.6 has a few minor/major hiccups yet to be resolved. As a plus, there seems to be a plethora of "potential" fixes by many well intended and highly capable individuals. Yet, at least for me... none has resolved the issue you describe with our podcast visuals. I suspect by now that apple is at least aware of this problem and is hopefully already working diligently to resolve this issue. If I could suggest anything, it would be to exercise patience while apple works to resolve and continue reading as many posts as possible regarding this issue. Sooner or later, someone WILL discover what will resolve our dilemma. Until then... I suggest a measure of patient awareness as our optimal course of action.
Til then... may all who share this problem choose harmony over frustration as our fingers share our thoughts. And, that each takes the time to preview and modify them before posting to the world.

How do I export a Pages doc to epub-previous articles state you should choose Share > Export to epub-However when you try that you get a message stating that iworks has been discontinued? What now-I still do not know how to publish a Pages document to epub (post iworks so-to-speak) -please help? I have writtern a 30 pages mini-ebook and now want to publish it to epub (to enable me to publish it on iBooks, B&N and Amazon Kindle) but I do not know how to proceed?

Trying To understand My Final Bill (not a rant :) ...

I have recently switched my broadband and phone to another provider and as i was switching within my contract i am being charged as i a expected.
As my final bill is not broken down in detail i do not know why it does not tally with what i had calculated using the costs provided HERE.
I want to ring up to dispute the ammount but also want to make sure i have all my ducks in a row before i do incase i have missed something obvious.
Here's the run down, i am well outside the original contract period but it was extended by 12 months when i got BT Sports. Confirmation email says this was on 16th June 2013. I realised when it was too late that i extended it by a further 12 months when i increased my cloud storage to 50gb, confirmation email says this was on Aug 9th 2013. So i assumed that my most recent 12 month contract would have expired on Aug 9th 2014.
I am/was on BT Total Broadband Option 3 with unlimited evening and weekend calls. The switch date to my new provider was 12 May 2014. By my maths i make this just under 3 months was left to run on my contract. Using the link i put above i expected my final bill to be (rounding it up to 3 months to be safe) 3 x £15.25 = £45.75.
My final bill came to £135.28. Alot more than anticipated. If anyone is willing to help explain where i have gone wrong if i have or tell me where BT have gone wrong so i have my facts straight before i ring them up it would be most appreciated.

I thilk you'll have to ask them. The only things that I can think of are:
They think you have renewed your contract again at some point, or
They are charging you cancellation fees for other services as well.
There was a lot of mucking about at the beginning of this year with services that used to be free, but BT started to charge for them. However you could avoid paying by signing up for (yet) another 12 month contract.

Cannot print pdf files with 9.3.1, cannot remove patch

does anyone know how to fix msi problems ? updater says 9.3.1 is more functional than 9.4 what does that mean? does that mean I need to remove 9.3.1 in order to install 9.4 ? All i want out of this is the ability to control what stays and want goes onto my hard drive and the ability to print PDF files like the product claims. I swear as my life advances I will not buy a product from a company that cannot support me with there standard issues of products . offering a free product that malfunctions is not my idea of building a trusting relationship. What's more disturbing is that I talked with Ganesh this morning on adobe chat and know i cannot even register with that email. Can anyone fix msi problems or is this just a runaround bad business practice of post WTO new world order ? Thanks for letting me vent. Now about the msi problem...

I did my backup and downloaded windows installer cleanup from http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html After download when I ran the program to install it, the window that popped up was labled "Microsoft Office Update". When that disappeared I found Windows Installer Cleanup located in the All programs list in start. I clicked it and a window popped up about the size of task manager. I scrolled down and highlighted Adobe 9.3.1 and clicked remove and it removed it and the 9.3.1 unremovable update from the conrol panel. Then I went to Adobe.com , downloads and downloaded Adobe 9.4, installed it, and tested it by printing a PDF file. Before I was scared to mess up my netbook and didn't want to deal with the hassle, but we all have our limits until we start to take these kind of risks into the unknown. sometimes, even though it's a burden to register to umpteen forums, it's that extra hassle that gets you over the edge. Please share this info. ohh yeah, NONE of this was done in safe mode.

Debugging live streaming ingest protocol

I posted a separate question last week about live streaming protocols. I had been searching for documentation on fmp4 live streaming ingestion and found nothing, but afterward I found the Smooth Streaming protocol specification (MS-SSTR-- the forum won't
let me link to it directly), which seems to apply to my use case. Now I've spent a few days trying to make it work and so far haven't been able to do so.
I'm not looking for a canned solution; I'm looking for resources to help me debug the problem.
According to the specification, I should be able to make a long-lived, chunked http POST request to my ingest endpoint, sending the fragmented mp4 data as the request body. I've tried to implement this without success-- I open the request stream and
write 1000 byte chunks at a time, but the connection is reset after only one or two chunks. I can't tell if the problem is the data or the chunk size or something else.
And if I mimic Expression Encoder 4, which seems to diverge from the spec and not send its data chunked at all, the connection isn't reset no matter how much data I send, but the video never makes it to the preview stream on the Azure portal.
So the question is, how can I debug this? Is there any error log or diagnostic output I can access? Each time I try something new, it doesn't work, but I have no way of knowing whether I am getting closer to or further from a working solution. I'm a bit
lost here, so help would be greatly appreciated.

The IP security thing is a good thought, but I think I have that part taken care of already. I saw the option to restrict ingest to the IP I used to configure the channel from in the Portal, and I made sure to set it to Off. Also, I can stream successfully
from Expression, which would have the same source IP.
As for why I want to use Smooth Streaming, basically there are two reasons. First, it seems like the simpler protocol conceptually. I'm already generating fragmented mp4 files (though I think they might be packaged wrong; I can't really tell which part is
causing problems), and it seems simple enough that I could implement it without turning to a third-party library (the part that's feeding the stream is written in C#, though I'd be willing to rewrite in C++ if necessary, and there's no RTMP client
that seems trustworthy-- FluorineFX, for instance, seems to have ceased development years ago now).
Second, while reading the RTMP spec, I realized that even if I had such a library it isn't clear how I would need to use it with Azure. It allows creating objects or invoking methods on the server, but I couldn't find any guide to which objects and methods
might be supported. And the spec also doesn't define specifically what video format, codec options, or packaging method I need to use; essentially I would seem to have all the same problems I'm having with Smooth, only with the added difficulty of needing
a third-party library to implement the spec properly.
I guess the main problem is that I don't really know how close or far I am from success. Like I said, I think I am doing something wrong in how the video is encoded, but for all I know I'm being dropped because I'm feeding the data too quickly
or slowly. (I can't find any documentation on how much data Azure can buffer or how it handles underruns when the video to be streamed live is generated on the fly and not tied to strictly realtime output). If there's more documentation on specifically how
Azure uses or expects data from these protocols, it'd be very helpful.

Go to System Preferences>iCloud - there is an indicator at the bottom of the pane showing how much of your storage you are using.
The basic account of 5GB is free. Additional storage for Backup, Documents etc: additional 10GB, $20 p.a., 20 GB, $40 p.a., 50GB $100 p.a. (note that this is not iDisk-type storage for any type of file).
iWork is a set of three programs available in Mac and iOS versions - Pages, Numbers and Keynote. iwork.com was an online storage for posting iWork documents - it's closed and its functions superceded by iCloud.
Your iCloud account is as secure as your password, so make sure it's a strong one - at least 8 characters (12 is better), one of which must be lower case, one upper case and one a numeral (no odd characters), and not your birthday, dog's name, or 'password'!
