Load Balancing (Hardware)

What is the best practice in for a 3 server install...
Server 1 has Planning/Foundation
Server 2 has FDM/FDMEE
Server 3 has Essbase
1 - Should/Could I name all three EPM Instances across servers "EPM11123"?
2 - If I deploy without the hardware configured first, will it be difficult to re-deploy when the hardware is installed?
Thanks,
Jz

Depends, why do you want to add a LB? for HA or to really balance load amongst users? if it's just for HA you "may" want to do something like that, however, if it's for user load you may want to have one foundation and two planning. Design is not a one size fits all but you need to understand the difference between HA and LB depending on what you're trying to achieve. Just b/c the doc says you can use a load balancer doesn't mean you want to, even in a production environment. But, if you decided you wanted to use LB because you have a large number of users or you need HA, you should be able to configure it now without an LB and scale out later on adding an LB.

  • Request failover between Load Balancer and OAS 10.1.3.3

    Hello,
I have a Load Balancer hardware "Cisco 11500 content service"
Working on 4 applications server OAS 10.1.3.3 on the oracle enterprise lunix
We are using Oracle HTTP Server And deployed application Under (j2ee) I am using Cluster between them "instant” as the same on all 4 servers
If an OC4J process goes down between requests, then this module is able to hide that failure from the end user by transparently routing the next request to another OC4J that is available within the same group of JVM.
BUT when I shutdown the opmn the Load Balancer Hardware is still sending that requests to the opmn that is already down
How can I configure or fix that request that is common to that opmn stopped process
Do you have the solution to solve this issue?
    Thanks.

  • Load balancing on iplanet

What are the capabilitiesof the load balancing plug-in "Resonate Command Module" for iplanet? Is this the only load balancing feature that iplanet provides.
Also, if anyone knows of other reasonable (price) load balancing solutions for iplanet web server: preferably, software based only (no load balancing hardware).
I looked at the documentation, and deduced that "resonate" alone cannot provide load balancing for iplanet web servers.
    TIA,
    Mo

Actually resonate is a sofware based load balancing solution. The confusion is that it doesnt come with the iplanet web server. The command module is only an interface to resonate that will tell it how to react to iplanet internals. So, you would still need to buy Resonate central dispatch for this to be any use to you. Resonate software is expensive. Expect to pay about 60k to start last I checked.
There arent that many other software load balancers that are cheap. I found one open source thing called pen. Check out http://siag.nu/pen
It's really not bad. It supports sticky lb and can actually work for any simple tcp protocol: http,https,ldap,imap,pop,etc....
The only thing is that you need to set up your own failover for pen so that if the pen process goes down another machine will service the requests.

  • Virtual Hosts for Load Balancing

    Hi all,
So I have two identical servers, that have SOA Suite installed pointing to the same database. (RHEL 4) I have configured the mod_oc4j.conf file for round robin, and then I created a virtual host on the httpd.conf file to point to the load balance hardware.
It worked! But with a slight issue. The Load Balance server is orasoaqa.tmpw.net:7777, which opens the main Application Server page. However, when I click on BPEL console, or ESB, it continues using the orasoaqa.tmpw.net:7777 virtual, which of course, breaks even trying to login.
What am I missing here? Here's the entry I added to mod_oc4j.conf:
    Oc4jSelectMethod roundrobin:local
Here's the entry I added to the httpd.conf on server 1:
    Port 7777
    Listen 7777
    NameVirtualHost XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:7777
    <VirtualHost orasoaqaapp101.ma.tmpw.net:7777>
    ServerName orasoaqa.tmpw.net
    ServerAlias orasoaqaapp101.ma.tmpw.net
    Port 7777
    </VirtualHost>
    and on server 2:
    Port 7777
    Listen 7777
    NameVirtualHost XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:7777
    <VirtualHost orasoaqaapp102.ma.tmpw.net:7777>
    ServerName orasoaqa.tmpw.net
    ServerAlias orasoaqaapp102.ma.tmpw.net
    Port 7777
    </VirtualHost>
Yes, the port for Application Server and the port on the Load Balancer are exactly the same, I hope this isn't the issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Seeing that you have an external load balancer available, you really should not be trying software load balancing. Windows NLBS is a software based load balancing and is not really dependent on the physical/virtual hosting of the OS. There are certain gotchas
w.r.t the NLB modes since they depend on network protocols such as arp, propagation of MAC addresses and usage of the MAC in the L2 routing tables of network devices.
You should be taking the help of the cloud service provider as ONLY they would have an understanding of their underlying networking infrastructure such as VLANS. addressing, routing rules and such.
You could also refer to the VMware support forum for KB's such as
    http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1006580
Most importantly, NLBS is a base OS related service and you're more likely to get a response in the Windows Server Forum. In the specific case of BizTalk, the Windows NLB is only used for hosting the out of process services such as those associated with
HTTP/s Receive, orchestration published as schemas, web services (asmx) and/or WCF endpoints.

  • Multiple dgraph clustering (load balancing) OOTB available?

    Hello,
We have 2 dgraphs running in parallel having the same data to share the load of the clients.
I would like to know if there is any OOTB solution provided by Endeca where in these two dgraphs can share the load. OR I need to use an external load balancer for the same?
If there is any document that explains the configuration for OOTB Endeca solution, please let me know

    Introduction
Load balancers are the preferred solution for providing scalability, redundancy, and fail-over for MDEX Engine queries. Typically, load balancing and failover are accomplished with the use of dedicated load balancing hardware. For some Endeca implementations, however, a robust mechanism for load balancing may not be available or required by the customer. For more information on the basics of load balancing an Endeca application, see the “Endeca Load Balancing Best Practices” Solution Article available on EDeN.
This document describes the configuration steps involved in leveraging Apache’s default load balancing mechanisms to provide a simple load balancing solution for an Endeca application. In this scenario, Apache will sit between the Endeca presentation API housed in a web application and redundant MDEX engines. Apache performs the duties of a simple load balancer and failover broker, managing query requests from the application tier to specific MDEX engines.
    Configuration Steps
The described configuration leverages Apache 2.2 HTTP Server as the load balancing mechanism between two identical MDEX engines all residing on a single server. The sample configuration expects the Apache HTTP server to be listening on port 5555 and the MDEX engines to be listening on ports 8000 and 8001. These can be changed as appropriate for a given environment.
    1. In the Apache httpd.conf, enable the server for listening on port 5555.
Endeca Solution Article Simple MDEX Load Balancing with Apache HTTP Server
    Endeca Confidential 3 of 5
    2. Enable the following modules by un-commenting the appropriate loadmodule statements in the httpd.conf file. These modules include: mod_proxy, mod_proxy_balancer, mod_proxy_connect, mod_proxy_http, mod_negotiation.
    3. Include the httpd-vhosts.conf file by un-commenting the appropriate line in the httpd.conf file.
    4. Save the httpd.conf file and open the httpd-vhosts.conf file. Append the below information and save the file.
Endeca Solution Article Simple MDEX Load Balancing with Apache HTTP Server
    Endeca Confidential 4 of 5
    NameVirtualHost *:5555 <VirtualHost *:5555> ServerName localhost ProxyPass / balancer://dgraphs/ ProxyPassReverse / balancer://dgraphs/ <Proxy balancer://dgraphs> BalancerMember http://localhost:8000 loadfactor=1 retry=0 BalancerMember http://localhost:8001 loadfactor=1 retry=0 </Proxy> </VirtualHost> <Location /balancer-manager> SetHandler balancer-manager </Location>
The “retry” parameter associated with Balance Members disables the period of inactivity for a particular worker after Apache determines it is offline. The default is 60 seconds. It is recommended that this is set to a low number such as 0.
In environments where particular MDEX engines are targeted for additional load, the “loadfactor” parameter associated with Balance Members can be adjusted. Higher values ensure that the load balancing algorithm that is used will route the traffic load accordingly to specific Balance Members.
    5. Restart Apache.
    6. Within the UI application, configure the host and port of the HttpENEConnection to the host and port of the load balancer (e.g. localhost:5555).
Endeca Solution Article Simple MDEX Load Balancing with Apache HTTP Server
    Endeca Confidential 5 of 5
Apache HTTP Server is now properly configured to serve as a load balancer for the MDEX Engines.

  • Load Balancing with BigIP / SSL question

I have an oddball question. We're load balancing ColdFusion
MX7 across 3 servers using a BigIP load balancing server. We
decided to go the hardware approach and it has been great except
    for one small configuration issue.
We use a mix of SSL and non SSL pages, prior to the switch
from a single server to a load balanced setup I used to script that
would determine if a page that was supposed to be SSL had the
variable CGI.HTTPS turned on or off. If it was off, the page would
redirect back to itself with the SSL turned on.
The problem we have is that we followed BigIP's instruction
to secure the load balancing hardware instead of the three servers
running behind it. So what happens is that the traffic goes to the
load balancer port 441, but then the calls from the load balancer
to the individual servers is port 80. So even if a page is called
as HTTPS://... the coldfusion server says that CGI.HTTPS is "off"
since the traffic is port 80.
This isn't much of a problem, our SSL pages are linked as
HTTPS:// and the only problem would actually arise if someone was
to type in the URL and call it as HTTP rather than HTTPS.
My questions is this, does anyone know of a way that I can
detect if the page should be HTTPS and is not without changing our
configuration and putting SSL certificates on each individual
    server?

    Hey,
Well the load balancing with the BigIP device is really very
    amazing. I think
what i liked most was swapping out servers when their lease
    was up, through the
BigIP manager I just stopped all traffic to a server, shut it
    down, plugged in
the new one and turned traffic back on. It was really very
    easy.
The SSL stuff still gives me a headache to think about. but
    I should mention I
no longer work where I was, plus now I'm all .net C# but
    that's a different
    story.
I think if I was going to do this all again I would not have
    secured the bigIP
unit. It was nice to buy one SSL cert for all the servers I
    attached rather
than one per server, but getting the SSL sites to work
    properly was a headache.
We also use windows file replication where now I would go
    with like a pair of
Dell MD1000's mirrored for storage and just have tons of ram
    and cpu on the
front end units. Depends what you want to spend I guess. I
    think the bigIP unit
we bought was like 20 grand, i think they are cheaper now
    though.
    Hope I helped.

  • Deploy Forms and Reports with Load Balancing

I am trying to determine what we need to install here. I have read OracleAS, Web Cache, Application Server, and
Forms documents and have no answer still.
We are currently run 9iAS with Forms and Reports 6i only.
I did not do any of those installs. We are migrating to
Forms and Reports 10g. I need to setup an OracleAS 10g
Forms and Reports application server with the ability to
do Load Balancing over 2 windows Web servers to handle
4,000+ users. The application database will be on its own
    Windows server.
Do I need to install the Infastructure, BI, and Web cache?
Or just Oracle 10g Application Server option? Or other?
Do I need to install it on both web servers and do
something like clustering? Do I need to install Web
cache? I just took the 10g AS class and basically did not learn anything about deploying Forms and Reports.
Can anyone give me a place to find the things I need to
    install and setup?
    Thanks.
    Kim

I am a DBA and have not done an iAS or AS installation
before but am now required to learn it. We will be using
SSL and no load balancing hardware. We setup for other
customer sites and setting Windows servers in the past.
We have not done load balancing before.
I am just confused with all the 10gAS options there are to
install to just run 10g Forms and Reports and setup
OracleAS 10g with the load balancing features.
So I just need to install OracleAS Forms and Reports
Server if I am just installing Forms and Reports with SSL.
But if for Load Balancing Oracle 10g I need to cluster
    just Reports 10g? I thought I would need OracleAS10g
installed on my two Windows servers and somehow cluster
or let the two know they are the same web page handling
the incoming requests? I do know about Apache redirct. Is
that an Apache feature and is it covered in an Oracle
documentation? They did not cover it in class either.

  • VO's and load balancing question

    Hi guys,
As anyone got any experience in load balancing a web application using ADF BC's (EO's and VO's) and any problems that I face?
I am researching possible problems that will pop up while deploying my application. I want to have my app running on two servers and put some form of load balancer (hardware or software) in front of them. One issue I can think of is that when someone commits something on one server the VO cache on the other server will not get updated. This is a problem if there is a user on each server and they are both accessing the same row.

  • Xserve Load Balancing

    Hi,
Our company is planning to use two Apple Xserve as our media streaming server and our transfer rate estimation is around 6Gbps. We are planning to use a load balancing hardware. Could you recommend to us a load balancer that works well with Xserve.
    Thanks in advanced.

Well, at the simplest level, assuming you're using gigabit ethernet you're going to need 6 servers assuming you can max the gig-e port, which never happens.
Assuming you can get a 50% utilization rate (which is good going), you'll need 12 machines.
Are you sure about those 10,000 connections? If it's true you're talking of running a 600kbps stream, which is at the high end of streaming.
Also, if these are internet-based clients, do you have the network infrastructure to handle that kind of throughtput?
Routers with capacity to handle that kind of bandwidth typically cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, not to mention the bandwidth costs - even at $10/mbps you're talking $60,000/month in bandwidth costs.
Don't get me wrong, if your numbers are right, it's a nice project to run, but it's very difficult to jump from 0 to 10,000 connections/sec or 6gbps in no time at all.
Also, if this isn't an ongoing thing you might want to consider using a content delivery network such as Akamai to handle the client traffic - your two servers would be enough to seed the content to Akamai, leaving them to serve it to the 10,000 end users.

  • How to configure software load balancer for R12.1.3

    Dear All,
I need to configure software load-balancer on application tiers and i need to know if its possible to have a software load-balancer in place of hardware load balancer if i need to route the load on two application nodes.
    Thanks !

As we do not certify, nor support 3rd party loadbalancers we can not confirm that the Piranha loadbalancer will perform as expected with EBS. The basic minimum requirements or loadbalaning is that it has death detection, and session / cookie persistence We also typically require that a hardware loadbalancer is used. Internally we use F5 loadbalancers, and Cisco ACE.
What are the limitations of a software load balancer compared to hardware ? As mentioned above, your software balancer should has the capability of "death detection, and session/cookie persistence" -- More details can be found in (Implementing Load Balancing On Oracle E-Business Suite - Documentation For Specific Load Balancer Hardware [ID 727171.1]).
Oracle Web Cache can be used as a software load balancer (which is an Oracle product), but Oracle recommends you do not use it in production instances.
    Thanks,
    Hussein
