Loading data held in separate XML files

I think I am probably just having a slow brain day, but I have a requirement that I can't think of a neat solution for.
We will be receiving a number (200-400 ish) xml files twice a day. These files will have a standard naming structure - 850xxxx_ATT_850LLLL_zzz.xml
xxx will be a 4 digit school number - we will get a file for each school twice a day and yyy is a numeric identifier. The identifiers won't necessarily be consecutive for a particular school, they will in general be increasing, but they will wrap around eventually (only a 3 digit number)
I want to merge all of the data into a table, twice a day, the details for an existing row can be updated and new ones inserted. Once I have the data in oracle I can then process it however I like, I'm comfortable with that bit. It's loading the data I'm not sure about
database version is
BANNER
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0 - Prod
PL/SQL Release 10.2.0.4.0 - Production
CORE     10.2.0.4.0     Production
TNS for 32-bit Windows: Version 10.2.0.4.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 10.2.0.4.0 - Production
running on Windows Server 2003
I'd prefer a mainly oracle based solution if possible. Otherwise I could just loop through the files programatically, strip the data out via XPATH or using some sort of DOM and then do a series of insert/updates. Getting messy though and I would prefer to keep the loading of the data with the processing of the data.
Any suggestions? A gentle Nudge in the right direction should do it - I'm happy to work out the details (Which is why I haven't gone into the details of the XML or the data)
Regards,
Carl

1 - It's going to have to be a process scripted outside of the database (Although I guess i could use DBMS_SCHEDULER to kick off the SQL Load command?)You can schedule sqlloader initialization by using windows scheduler, which would then execute some *.bat script with sqlloader commands.
2- how will this handle the multiple file names? Doesn't the control file need to specify the source of the file? Would I need to dynamically generate control files?Sqlloader can load multiple files using one control file.
Example is Re: sql loader multiple files
Generating control file dynamically can be done in several ways, depending on the os and tools you have.
One example is here.

  • Export XML data to Separate XML Files

    A table which has a column with nText data type. I can cast it to XML and then save it manually. (file.xml)
    Let's say if I have 100 rows and I need 100 separate XML files under "C:\xml\" folder, I could do it easily by using
    SSIS with Export Column Task.
    Is that possible with T-SQL too?

  • Loading, processing and transforming Large XML Files

    Hi all,
    I realize this may have been asked before, but searching the history of the forum isn't easy, considering it's not always a safe bet which words to use on the search.
    Here's the situation. We're trying to load and manipulate large XML files of up to 100MB in size.
    The difference from what we have in our hands to other related issues posted is that the XML isn't big because it has a largly branched tree of data, but rather because it includes large base64-encoded files in the xml itself. The size of the 'clean' xml is relatively small (a few hundred bytes to some kilobytes).
    We had to deal with transferring the xml to our application using a webservice, loading the xml to memory in order to read values from it, and now we also need to transform the xml to a different format.
    We solved the webservice issue using XFire.
    We solved the loading of the xml using JAXB. Nevertheless, we use string manipulations to 'cut' the xml before we load it to memory - otherwise we get OutOfMemory errors. We don't need to load the whole XML to memory, but I really hate this solution because of the 'unorthodox' manipulation of the xml (i.e. the cutting of it).
    Now we need to deal with the transofmation of those XMLs, but obviously we can't cut it down this time. We have little experience writing XSL, but no experience on how to use Java to use the XSL files. We're looking for suggestions on how to do it most efficiently.
    The biggest problem we encounter is the OutOfMemory errors.
    So I ask several questions in one post:
    1. Is there a better way to transfer the large files using a webservice?
    2. Is there a better way to load and manipulate the large XML files?
    3. What's the best way for us to transform those large XMLs?
    4. Are we missing something in terms of memory management? Is there a better way to control it? We really are struggling there.
    I assume this is an important piece of information: We currently use JDK 1.4.2, and cannot upgrade to 1.5.
    Thanks for the help.

    I think there may be a way to do it.
    First, for low RAM needs, nothing beats SAX. as the first processor of the data. With SAX, you control the memory use since SAX only processes one "chunk" of the file at a time. You supply a class with methods named startElement, endElement, and characters. It calls the startElement method when it finds a new element. It calls the characters method when it wants to pass you some or all of the text between the start and end tags. It calls endElement to signal that passing characters is over, and to let you get ready for the next element. So, if your characters method did nothing with the base-64 data, you could see the XML go by with low memory needs.
    Since we know in your case that the characters will process large chunks of data, you can expect many calls as SAX calls your code. The only workable solution is to use a StringBuffer to accumulate the data. When the endElement is called, you can decode the base-64 data and keep it somewhere. The most efficient way to do this is to have one StringBuffer for the class handling the SAX calls. Instantiate it with a big enough size to hold the largest of your binary data streams. In the startElement, you can set the length of the StringBuilder to zero and reuse it over and over.
    You did not say what you wanted to do with the XML data once you have processed it. SAX is nice from a memory perspective, but it makes you do all the work of storing the data. Unless you build a structured set of classes "on the fly" nothing is kept. There is a way to pass the output of one SAX pass into a DOM processor (without the binary data, in this case) and then you would wind up with a nice tree object with the rest of your data and a group of binary data objects. I've never done the SAX/DOM combo, but it is called a SAXFilter, and you should be able to google an example.
    So, the bottom line is that is is very possible to do what you want, but it will take some careful design on your part.

    Three options come to my mind.
    Option 1: Use SAP transaction SXDA_TOOLS (Object Type BUS2032), Program Type (BAPI) and Program (CREATEFROMDAT2).
    Option 2: Use SAP transaction SXDA_TOOLS (Object Type BUS2032), Program Type (DINP) and Program (RVINVB10).
    Option 3: Translate the xml to IDoc so that ORDER04 / ORDER05 Idoc can be used to create Sales order (WEDI transaction).

  • How to create a data connection with dynamic XML file?

    Thanks for all reply first!
    I have formatted the submitted data into an XML file on the server side,this file can be import to PDF form correctly.
    I try to send this XML file to the user to let him can review what he has submitted.
    I guess that I should create a data connection to the XML file so that it can be reviewed by the user.
    But the question is that the XML file is dynamic generated.
    How can i do?
    give me some clus or examples,please.
    thanks,
    Jasper.

    Hi Jasper,
    To show user back the result, you can use PDF instead of XML. You can store the PDF template in server and you can merge XML data with PDF template by Livecycle Form Data Integration service.
    We, as KGC, can generate huge number of Adobe Livecycle forms in small periods. Also we give consultancy on Adobe Livecycle ES products and Adobe Livecyle Designer. In case of any need, do not hesitate to contact us.

  • Load multiple parts of an XML file into one dynamic Text Field

    Hi I am trying to load text from an external XML file into a dynamic text box. I have so far managed to load single parts of the XML file into a dynamic text field. I now want to be able to load different parts of the XML file (something similar to a string with appendText) into the same text Field.
    I have so far managed to achive this using the String and append text properties, but would like to use XML file to do it instead.
    Any tips please?
    Thanks

    In essence you can just do:
    TextField.text = XML.node1 + XML.node2;

  • Writing to separate XML files

    I'm not too familiar with XML yet, so I don't know what its called, but you know how you can "include" another XML file in this fashion:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <!DOCTYPE configuration SYSTEM "my.dtd" [
      <!ENTITY include SYSTEM "include.xml">
    ]>
    <root>
      &include;
    </root>... and all the stuff in include.xml gets essentially copied into yours whenever the file is read. Well how can I generate a file that looks like this. I basically want to be able to choose which nodes underneath the root node I can put in separate files. I'm doing this by converting a DOM to XML with this code...
             Document d = MY_DOCUMENT;
             DOMSource domSource = new DOMSource(d);
         TransformerFactory tf = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
         tf.setAttribute("indent-number",4);
         Transformer transformer = tf.newTransformer();
         transformer.setOutputProperty(OutputKeys.METHOD, "xml");
         transformer.setOutputProperty(OutputKeys.ENCODING,"ISO-8859-1");
         transformer.setOutputProperty(OutputKeys.INDENT, "yes");
         transformer.setOutputProperty(OutputKeys.DOCTYPE_SYSTEM,"ems.dtd");
         FileOutputStream fileOut = new FileOutputStream(filename);
         transformer.transform(domSource, new StreamResult(new OutputStreamWriter(fileOut,"utf-8")));
         fileOut.close();

    You can also use commands like bcp withT-SQL  query to get the shredded XML values saved as separate xml files. You've xpath function like query() available which will shred out parts of XML from your main column

  • How can I affix Data to a existing XML file?

    Hallo.
    I have to write Data to an XML file. This I have to in a stacked Sequence within a while loop. How can I write my Data to my existing XML file without overwriting my existing Data from the loop before?
    Thanks

    I made the erroneous assumption that you were using your own XML creation code.  The LabVIEW write to XML file VI overwrites the file every time.  You can get around this behavior in  a couple of ways.
    Create your own write to XML VIs using the LabVIEW one as your base.  The LabVIEW one write a header, writes your data, then writes the end tag.  Split this up so that you open the file and write the header before your loop.  During the loop, write your data.  Write the end tag and close the file when you exit the loop.  Don't overwrite the LabVIEW vi.lib function, or you will probably regret it.  Copy it to a different location before you start your modifications.
    Use the LabVIEW write to XML file for the first write of the loop.  This will give you a file with a header and your first set of data.  Still in the first loop iteration, reopen the file and position the file pointer on the start of the end tag (</LVData>).  In subsequent loop operations, flatten your data to XML and write to the file directly using the file write primitive.  When you exit your loop, write an end-of-line character and the end tag "</LVData>" and close the file.
    If you need more detailed help on either of the above methods, let me know.
    Out of curiosity, why are you saving your data as XML?  There may be a better way to do it, depending on your application.

  • Collect data from a dynamic XML file into multiple internal tables

    I need to convert the XML file into multiple internal tables. I tried many links and posts in SDN but still was facing difficulty in achieving this. Can some one tell me where I am going wrong.
    My XML file is of the following type.It is very complex and the dynamice.
    The following tags occur more than once in the XML file. The "I" and "L" tags and its child tags can occur ones or more than once for each XML file and it is not constant. i.e in one file they can occur 1 time and in another they can occur 100 times.
    "I" and "L" are child tags of <C>

      </I>
    <L>
             <J>20</J>

      </L>
    Tags <C> and <F> occur only ones for each XML file. <C> is the child tag of "A" and "F" is the child tag of <C>.
    I need to collect <D>, <E> in one internal table ITAB.
    I need to collect <G>, <H> in one internal table JTAB.
    I need to collect <J>, <K> in one internal table KTAB.

    <J>, <N> in one internal table PTAB.
    Please help..i am really tring hard to figure this out. I am found lot of threads addressing this issue but not my problem.
    Kindly help.

    Hi Rammohan,
    Thanks for the effort!
    But I don't need to use GUI upload because my functionality does not require to fetch data from presentation server.
    Moreover, the split command advised by you contains separate fields...f1, f2, f3... and I cannot use it because I have 164 fields.  I will have to split into 164 fields and assign the values back to 164 fields in the work area/header line.
    Moreover I have about 10 such work areas.  so the effort would be ten times the above effort! I want to avoid this! Please help!
    I would be very grateful if you could provide an alternative solution.
    Thanks once again,
    Best Regards,
    Vinod.V

  • I want to load data into Oracle using XML & Java - hints??

    I have a XML files that are created on a timed basis....they describe a photo and point to a dir where the photo is stored...like...
    <image>
    <user>bill</user>
    <img>photo.jpg</img>
    <img_dir>'/tmp/photos'</img_dir>
    </image>
    I'd like to write a Java program that parses the XML and loads the images, data into Oracle.
    Suggestions on Oracle tools, downloads that will help me accomplish this???
    Thanks!

    Depending on whether you want assistance in doing the insert into the database or whether you don't mind writing the JDBC code to perform the insert, you can get by with only our XML Parser for Java v2, which implements SAX, DOM, XPath, and XSLT standards. The latest beta release (2.1.0) supports SAX2 and DOM2.
    If you want help inserting the XML into tables, then in addition to this, you might want our XML SQL Utility as well.

    The datastores have valid records but when we try to write them in the XML file it didn't work.
    ¿Can somebody help us?

    Thanks, let me give you an update:
    The datatype of the element is defined as follows:
              <xs:element name="AcctNo" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1">
                   <xs:simpleType>
                        <xs:restriction base="xs:string">
                             <xs:maxLength value="60"></xs:maxLength>
                        </xs:restriction>
                   </xs:simpleType>
              </xs:element>
    The ODI reverse ingeneering has created the column as VARCHAR(255). I think this ok, because XML driver doesn't takes in account the xsd element defined length.
    We have checked the XSD and is valid.
    In the other hand, I must say that we have created an interface that is loading data into the corresponding datastore without any problem but we couldn't generate an XML file from it.
    Any other advice?
