Loading XML Variables to Flash

I have my XML data loading into my SWF OK.
However, is there any way to call that tag name instead of
the child node number?
So instead of something like this:
myDate_txt.text = my_xml.firstChild.childNodes[2];
Can do something like this?
myDate_txt.text = my_xml.firstChild.myDate;
Is that possible? I know that does not work the way it is
written, but is there code that you can do something like that?
And how do you call the next child (cousin) if you have an
XML document like this:
<people>
<friend>
<name>Bob</name>
<age>39</age>
</friend>
<cousin>
<name>Sally</name>
<age>29</age>
</cousin>
</people>

  • Flash loads XML variables from cache memory...

    Hi everyone. This is a very important issue. I have been in
    many many forums looking for this answer and no one fulfills my
    expectations. As I said on title... I have created a small
    application that edits my XML file in server. It really works,
    because I open manually my file and it's perfectly modified...
    however, everytime I refresh my page it loads the ancient XML
    variables because they come from cache...
    I also could find out that this problem is mainly happening
    with IExplorer, not with Mozilla Firefox.... however, I need it to
    run on IE too... but can not find a real solution.. I have been
    told to add random numbers to the XMl file extenskion, and other
    things like that, honestly... they do not work... please... does
    anybody have the light on this issue ??? I will appreciate your
    answers...
    Thanks in advance,

    Did you try appending a URL variable.
    xmlRequest.xml.load("theData.xml?cacheKiller=" + new
    Date().getTime();

  • Loading php variables into flash 8

    i'm trying to load some vars into flash 8. i tried
    loadvariables, loadvariablesnum, loadvars, google. can't figure it
    out.
    2 years ago when using flash mx trying the same thing, the
    line:
    loadVariablesNum("file",0);
    was enough to do the trick.
    but in flash 8 can't get it to work ;(
    i have the simplest php file, something like this:
    <?
    $town = "where";
    $person = "who";
    $sex = "male";
    print "town=$town&person=$person&sex=$sex";
    ?>
    the use of variables is a must, so the solution
    print "town=where&person=who&sex=male"
    doesn't do me any good. actually this works.
    so what's the correct way of loading this into flash 8?
    thanks guyz.

    you can also use a FlashVars= parameter in your
    <object><embed> code, IF you are using your PHP code to
    also display your flash movie, and if you only need to pass these
    variables once when the movie loads. If this is what you need to
    do, use this....
    <object ...>
    ....// other params .....
    <param name="FlashVars" value="<?
    echo var1name;
    ?>=<?
    echo var1value;
    ?>&<?
    echo var2name;
    ?>=<?
    echo var2value;
    ?>" >
    Though you will have to do that in two places, once in the
    object code, and once in the embed code.
    The embed code would look more like
    <embed ...... FlashVars="<? //php similar to above
    ?>" ..... />
    I have used this successfully to pass in variables when the
    flash movie first loads, to pass in stuff like a URL for a link and
    other info. There are a lot of different ways to pass values in to
    flash. You can also use ExternalInterface.call and use Javascript
    along with PHP to retrieve info at any time, but that is more
    complex.
    This may not be what you need - but you can still use
    LoadVariables with Flash 8, as well.

  • FF12 Not loading xml in the flash player

    I have a VERY specific bug.
    I have a Flash intro to a site (please no comments, not my choice)
    The Flash intro (swf) pulls inn some links from an xml file.
    This works fin unless the user is running the following system:
    10.6 - snow leopard - running Firefox with version 11x of the flash plugin
    Totally stumped as the the cause Any help would be greatly appreciated

    You can open the LHH window via the (F10) Tools menu > Live HTTP headers or you can place a toolbar button on a toolbar via the Customize menu.
    Then you can reload that page and bypass the cache to make Firefox retrieve all the files from the server.
    You can also try to clear locally stored data in the Flash player via the Global settings panel, accessible via the right-click context menu of the Flash object.

  • Loading XML from different server

    Hi, I'm trying to load XML data into flash from a distant
    server. The movie loads the data fine when I run it in my local
    computer, but when I upload it to the web server nothing loads. I'm
    guessing this has to do with cross domain security settings. So I
    added Security.AllowDomain( ); and still not working. Any help
    would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    you need a cross-domain security file. check the security
    class'es loadPolicyFile() method for help.

  • Load XML with urlstring variables

    I have a flash page flipping book that I bought at activeden.  It uses an XML file to load in the images of the book to flip through.  I have created a PHP file that takes an event ID and creates a custom XML file for flash.  How do I have flash load an xml file like this?  Instead of passing:
    _xmlLoader.loadXml("setup.xml");
    I would like to pass:
    _xmlLoader.loadXml("setup.php?id=" + eid);
    That code doesn't seem to be working for me though.  Am I missing something here?

    Then I don't know what else to offer.  As long as the xml is well formed there should be no problem, unless you are testing locally and don't have PHP processing available locally.  You will be better off overall testing this on a server.
    As my policy I ignore/delete private messages that involve postings.  My voluntary attempts to help are strictly in the puiblic forums.

  • Flash won't load xml generated from coldfusion

    I have a swf file that used to load in xml files. It worked
    perfectly fine. However, I then realized it would make more sense
    to have the flash load a cfm file that creates xml on the fly.
    My cfm page is creating perfectly fine xml but the flash
    won't load it. WHY!?
    Here is the path to my xml...
    http://www.flyfishingcommunity.com/newsite/widgets/reports/pictures_widget_fly_fishing.cfm
    In my flash file I load the cfm the way I used to load the

  • Load XML file from addon domain without cross-domain Policy file

    Hello.
    Assuming that there are two addon domains on the same server: /public_html/domain1.com       and      /public_html/domain2.com
    I try to load XML file from domain2.com into domain1.com without using cross-domain policy file (since it doesn’t work on xml files in my case).
    So the idea is to use php file in order to load XML and read it back to flash.
    I’ve found an interesting scripts that seems to do the job but unfortunately I can't get it to work. In my opinion there is somewhere problem with AS3 part. Please take a look.
    Here are the AS3/PHP scripts:
    AS3 (.swf in www.domain1.com):
    // location of the xml that you would like to load, full http address
    var xmlLoc:String = "http://www.domain2.com/MyFile.xml";
    // location of the php xml grabber file, in relation to the .swf
    var phpLoc:String = "loadXML.php";
    var xml:XML;
    var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
    var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest(phpLoc+"?location="+escape(xmlLoc) );
    loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onXMLLoaded);
    loader.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, onIOErrorHandler);
    loader.load(request);
    function onIOErrorHandler(e:IOErrorEvent):void {
        trace("There was an error with the xml file "+e);
    function onXMLLoaded(e:Event):void {
        trace("the rss feed has been loaded");
        xml = new XML(loader.data);
        // set to string, since it is passed back from php as an object
        xml = XML(xml.toString());
        xml_txt.text = xml;
    PHP (loadXML.php in www.domain1.com):
    <?php
    header("Content-type: text/xml");
    $location = "";
    if(isset($_GET["location"])) {
        $location = $_GET["location"];
        $location = urldecode($location);
    $xml_string = getData($location);
    // pass the url encoded vars back to Flash
    echo $xml_string;
    //cURLs a URL and returns it
    function getData($query) {
        // create curl resource
        $ch = curl_init();
        // cURL url
        curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, $query);
        //Set some necessary params for using CURL
        curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER, false);
        curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1);
       //Execute the curl function, and decode the returned JSON data
        $result = curl_exec($ch);
        return $result;
        // close curl resource to free up system resources
        curl_close($ch);
    ?>

    I think you might be right about permissions/settings on the server for php. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to adjust them.
    So I wrote my own script - this time I used file path instead of http address of the XML file.  It works fine in my case.
    Here it is:
    XML file on domain2.com:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <gallery>
        <image imagePath="galleries/gallery_1/images/1.jpg" thumbPath="galleries/gallery_1/thumbs/1.jpg" file_name= "1"> </image>
        <image imagePath="galleries/gallery_1/images/2.jpg" thumbPath="galleries/gallery_1/thumbs/2.jpg" file_name= "2"> </image>
        <image imagePath="galleries/gallery_1/images/3.jpg" thumbPath="galleries/gallery_1/thumbs/3.jpg" file_name= "3"> </image>
    </gallery>
    swf  on domain1.com:
    var imagesXML:XML;
    var variables:URLVariables = new URLVariables();
    var varURL:URLRequest = new URLRequest("MyPHPfile.php");
    varURL.method = URLRequestMethod.POST;
    varURL.data = variables;
    var MyLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader;
    MyLoader.dataFormat =URLLoaderDataFormat.VARIABLES;
    MyLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, XMLDone);
    MyLoader.load(varURL);
    function XMLDone(event:Event):void {
        var imported_XML:Object = event.target.data.imported_XML;
        imagesXML = new XML(imported_XML);
       MyTextfield_1.text = imagesXML;
       MyTextfield_2.text = imagesXML.image[0].attribute("thumbPath");  // sample reference to attribute "thumbPath" of the first element
    php file on domain1.com:
    <?php
    $xml_file = simplexml_load_file('../../domain2.com/galleries/gallery_1/MyXMLfile.xml');  // directory to XML file on the same server
    $imported_XML = $xml_file->asXML();
    print "imported_XML=" . $imported_XML;
    ?>
    Regards
    PS: for those who read the above discussion: the first and the second script work but you must test which one is better in your situation. The first script will also work between two domains on different servers. No cross domain policy file needed.

  • How to specify XML declaration in an XML Variable

    I had posted this question in the Flex Builder discussion,
    but I am not sure if that was the right board, so posting it again
    here:
    I need to set the XML declaration for my XML variable as
    follows:
    var employees:XML =
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <employees>
    <employee ssn="123-123-1234">
    <name first="John" last="Doe"/>
    <address>
    <street>11 Main St.</street>
    <city>San Francisco</city>
    <state>CA</state>
    <zip>98765</zip>
    </address>
    </employee>
    <employee ssn="789-789-7890">
    <name first="Mary" last="Roe"/>
    <address>
    <street>99 Broad St.</street>
    <city>Newton</city>
    <state>MA</state>
    <zip>01234</zip>
    </address>
    </employee>
    </employees>;
    However, if I specify <?xml version="1.0"
    encoding="utf-8"?>, I get a design time and compile error. If I
    remove it it works fine. But the server to which I send this XML is
    expecting the declaration. How can I set the declaration?
    Any help or pointer is appreciated.

    I am not able to load the xml. Can anybody figure out the
    problem :
    I have used a LoadXML class :
    package {
    import flash.display.*;
    import flash.events.*;
    import flash.net.*;
    // Demonstrates the code required to load external XML
    public class LoadXML extends Sprite {
    // The property that will eventually contain the loaded XML
    private var novel:XML;
    // The object used to load the XML
    private var urlLoader:URLLoader;
    // Constructor
    public function LoadXML () {
    // Specify the location of the external XML
    var urlRequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest("novel.xml");
    // Create an object that can load external text data
    urlLoader = new URLLoader();
    // Register to be notified when the XML finishes loading
    urlLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,
    completeListener);
    // Load the XML
    urlLoader.load(urlRequest);
    // Method invoked automatically when the XML finishes
    loading
    private function completeListener(e:Event):void {
    // The string containing the loaded XML is stored in the
    URLLoader
    // object's data property (urlLoader.data). To create a new
    XML
    // instance from that loaded string, we pass it to the XML
    constructor
    novel = new XML(urlLoader.data);
    trace(novel.toXMLString()); // Display the loaded XML, now
    converted
    // to an XML object
    And in main.mxml :
    myXml = new LoadXml ;
    trace ( myXml.novel ) ;
    The output is errenous

  • Loading XML using a custom class and accessing it from other classes?

    I began with a class for a movie clip rollover function
    FigureRollOver. It works marvellously. Three things happen:
    1) it loads XML from a file "mod1_fig1.xml" and uses another
    class, XMLMember, to retool the scoping of the XML so that I can
    get at it
    2) an onload call inside of XMLMember calls the myOnLoad
    function and transfers the XML into an array.
    3) so long as the array is finished building, rolling over a
    movie clip attaches a new movie clip with the rollover text in it.
    But I don't want all those functions in one because I need it
    to be more dynamic, starting with being able to load any old xml
    file instead of just "mod1_fig1.xml", plus it seems like
    overbuilding to have all of that in one class, so I've separated
    out the loading of the XML and building of the array into its own
    class, FigureXMLLoader. FigureRollOver is then left to just attach
    the rollover with text in it, extracted from the array built by the
    new class.
    Problem is, though the array builds inside FigureXMLLoader, I
    can't figure out how to make it available outside the class. I know
    that I'm constructing things in the wrong order, and that the array
    needs to be somehow built inside the class function to be
    available, but I can't figure out how to do that. A cruddy
    work-around is to put a function call at the end of the building of
    the array, which calls yet ANOTHER function on the main timeline of
    my .swf to put the array I've just built into a new variable. This
    works, but it's messy. It seems like I should be able to have one
    line of script in the .swf that generates an array on the main
    timeline (or just a public array) which I can then access from my
    FigureRollOver class:
    var myRollOvers:Array = new FigureXMLLoader("mod1_fig1.xml");
    Here is FigureXMLLoader (see comments in the code for more
    details) which obviously does not return an array as it is, because
    of all the working around I've had to do. Note the "testing"
    variable, which can be traced from the main timeline of the .swf,
    but I will get "not what I want" because of course the array hasn't
    been built yet, and never will be, inside of the declaration as it
    is. How do I get it in there so I can return an array?
    Thanks!

    Suggest you ask this question in the Actionscript forum as
    this forum is
    more tuned to database integration questions.
    You can create arrays outside a class and pass them into it
    by reference and
    visa versa build arrays inside a class and pass out via
    reference.
    The preferred approach is to place the array in a class and
    not expose it.
    Then add methods to use the array or should we say to use the
    class.

  • AS3.0 External Interface: Pass variables to flash using javascript

    Hello all,
    I am looking for a simple and straightfoward example of how I can pass the value of a variable into flash using javascript.
    Specifically, I'd like to use javascript to pass the filename of an external video file that I would like to load into my flash movie.
    I'd also like to call a function in the SWF that plays the movie once the filename as been passed to the flash movie.
    External Inferface looks like the way to go.
    I've found a few decent AS2.0 examples, but converting them to AS3.0 has proven difficult and many of the examples are much too complex for what I am trying to do.
    If you have any code samples or tutorials showing the HTML/Javascript and the associated actionscript I'd really appreciate it!
    Thanks!

  • Loading XML in AS3

    OK, so I think I have the basics of loading XML in AS3. But I
    can't seem to access the info once it is loaded. I'm using the to
    load the .xml file:
    var myXML:XML = new XML();
    var XML_URL:String = "music.xml";
    var myXMLURL:URLRequest = new URLRequest(XML_URL);
    var myLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(myXMLURL);
    myLoader.addEventListener("complete", xmlLoaded);
    function xmlLoaded(event:Event):void
    myXML = XML(myLoader.data);
    trace("Data loaded.");
    But when I go to trace the .xml file with this:
    trace(myXML.toXMLString());
    I get nothing. However, if I place this trace inside the
    xmlLoaded function it traces it out. My problem is I want access to
    the info outside of that function. What am I doing wrong? Any
    advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    This looks like a matter of timing. Your first five lines
    are
    encountered one after the other, starting with var myXML
    through
    myLoader.addEventListener(), which calls a function defined
    immediately
    below that. The function is called when the "complete" event
    is dispatched,
    which may take longer or shorter depending on the size of the
    XML document
    and network traffic. If you put a trace() statement
    immediately below that,
    Flash will execute that too -- and at the moment it does,
    your XML document
    hasn't loaded yet.

    I copy/pasted your code exactly, then followed it with this:
    var t:Timer = new Timer(5000);
    t.addEventListener(
    TimerEvent.TIMER,
    function():void {
    trace(myXML);
    t.start();
    ... which waits five seconds, then runs that trace(). Sure
    enough, it
    outputs the XML contents.
    If you want to use the myXML variable elsewhere in your
    movie, you just
    have to make sure those other locations don't reference the
    variable until
    it has a value (or account for a lack of value in the logic
    they use). You
    might, for example, put a stop() action in frame one, along
    with the
    existing code (and instead of my timer), then have the
    "complete" event
    handler issue a play() action. In later frames, the myXML
    variable would
    have the data you need, because the playhead won't advance
    until the data
    have been loaded.

    In output i am getting like that.....

    xmlData.servername   is loading so late that it is taking undefined value.
    So please suggest somthing.

    the code is like that
    import com.utils.GlobalVarContainer;
    import flash.display.Loader;
    import flash.events.Event;
    import flash.net.URLLoader;
    import flash.net.URLRequest;
    var _xml:XML;
    var xmlData:XML = new XML();
    loadXMLFile();
    var server;
    var msgListGroup:XMLList;
        function loadXMLFile():void
       var loader= new URLLoader(new URLRequest("server.xml"));
       loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, loadedCompleteHandler);
       function loadedCompleteHandler(e:Event):void
       xmlData = new XML(e.target.data);
         GlobalVarContainer.vars.servername=xmlData.servername;
       GlobalVarContainer.vars.projectname=xmlData.projectname;
       msgListGroup=xmlData.servername;
    i want to use this GlobalVarContainer.vars.servername within other movieclip.....so i m taking global variable but it is also not working.
    this i m using in other movieclip...
    var localhost=GlobalVarContainer.vars.servername;
    var prjectName=GlobalVarContainer.vars.projectname;

    function compare_btnClick(e:Event){
      trace("hi");
      navigateToURL(new URLRequest("http://"+localhost+":8080/"+prjectName+"/web/vertical45.jsp?page=1"), "_self");
    and this i cant put in COMPLETE event handler function bcoz this compare_btn code is in three frame.

  • Need help with loading XML file

    Hello,
    I have been browsing the web/forums for an example on how to do this for a few days now.  I managed to get this working in Flash Pro quite easily but I think I am missing something when I want to do the same thing in Flex.
    Basically I want to load an XML file and then set the text values of 5 labels equal to the data in the XML file.
    So I a button created in MXML and have set the click event as follows:
         click="dsSetup(event)"
    I have also declared the following:
         public var myRequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest("assets/myFile.xml");   //folder located under src in project
         public var myLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
         public var myXML:XML;
    My function that loads is as follows:
    public function dsSetup(event:MouseEvent):void
         trace ("dsSetup");
         myXML = new XML (myLoader.data);
         h3.text = myXML.source.itemA;
         h4.text = myXML.source.itemB;
         h5.text = myXML.source.itemC;
         h7.text = myXML.source.itemD;
         h8.text = myXML.source.itemE;
         currentState = 'MainMenu';
    myLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, dsSetup);   // I think this line is now redundant as I have set it in the MXML
    myLoader.load(myRequest);
    This is the way I did it in Flash and it worked ok but I must be missing something in when it comes to Flex.
    Can someone explain or point me to a good tutorial that shows how to load XML in Flex?
    The ones I found seem to have about 50 lines of code just to load a file and add in way to much complexity for a beginner.
    Many Thanks

    I would suggest to save the loaded data in a Bindable variable and then to bind the text-properties to that:
    [Bindable]
    var myXML:XML;
    public function dsSetup(event:MouseEvent):void
         myXML = new XML (myLoader.data);
         currentState = 'MainMenu';
    <s:Label text="{myXML.source.itemA}"/>
