Localized Data Model Message Bundle

When you use the Validations in the Entity Objects of a data model and you place text for the text, errors, etc...it creates a MsgBundle for that class. Then for other languages you can create additional message bundle (e.g. MsgBundle_it, for italian) files for additional languages.
My question is how does the data model layer find the locale for the user? So when it issues a data model validation error, how does it know to use the italian version instead of the default, english one?
Also, I should add that I don't have access to the FacesContext and my Data Model project cannot be dependant on the ViewController object. So I cannot get the locale in the same fashion that I'm doing for my applications (i.e. get translated text for adf faces messages).

Hi Heri,
the system behavior is correct. The account in company code consists of three entity types:
1) COA - Chart of Accounts (Type 3)
2) ACCOUNT - Account (A-Segment, related to ECC table SKA1, Type 1)
3) ACCCCDET - Account in Company Code (B-Segment, releated to ECC table SKB1, Type 1).
3) includes 1) and 2) whereas 2) includes 1). If you grant authorization only for 3) but not for 1) and 2), you cannot do anything.
Best regards
Michael

  • Generator Locales and Entity Message Bundles

I'm using 7 different languages within my application and have set the Internationalization entries within the JHeadstart Application Definition Editor to use a propertyFile and I have supplied all the relevant generator locales. That is all working fine. My confusion now lies with the generation of MsgBundles when creating validation rules on an entity attribute. On doing that a EntityImplMsgBundle java class is created but only for the default locale.
    1. Is there an easy way to generate the different localised entity MsgBundles
    2. better still, how can I change the entity validation to use my JHeadstart generarted property files rather than a MsgBundle java class ? I thought I may be able to copy the rule name and message over to my properties file and then delete the MsgBundle but I can't seem to delete the MsgBundle
Many thanks for your help. Cheers,
    Brent

    Brent,
    1. No, you have to manually create those files
    2. Not possible either, even if you do not use declarative validation but do it in code and throw a JboException, the message bundle must be a java class.
I believe that in JDev 11, you can have centralized resource bundles, like in JHeadstart.
You might try the JDev forum for better alternatives though, since these are really ADF BC specific issues.

  • Unable to disable autoroute in Data Modeler

    Hi all,
I just downloaded the new latest version of SQLDeveloper for the MAC and can't seem to disable auto route so that I can adjust relationship lines.
I created a new Data Model and imported some tables, but can't adjust any of the FK relationship lines. When I right click on the diagram, the only options I have are a greyed out "Go to Diagram", and Model Properties. I tried going to Tools->Data Modeler->General Options, but couldn't find Auto Route there either.
Anyone have any suggestions? This is version 2.1.1.64 build MAIN-64.39, Data Modeler 2.0.0 build 584.

    Hi Jeffi,
this is Data Modeler Viewer bundled in SQL Developer - it's restricted in its functionality. Here is full functional version http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/datamodeler/index.html
    It's cost option.

  • Report locale, subtemplates and Data Model

    Hi,
    I have the following situation:
We have 4 templates according to language, with french the default language:
    - FR: template.rtf
    - NL: template_nl.rtf
    - DE: template_de.rtf
    - EN: template_en.rtf
The report locale is enough for BI Publisher to select the correct template, so that's OK.
Some data from our database is also based on locale (eg street names and cities).
Question 1: is it possible to use the current locale as parameter for the (sql) data model in some way (eg by using a specific parameter name)? For now we set the report locale to the correct language AND we send that same value through as a parameter. It would be cleaner to just set the report locale and be able to use that value in some way.
Question 2: all of the above templates have a footer that's being reused, each also share the same data model, but the data is again based on the current locale.
so: footer.rtf, footer_nl.rtf, footer_de.rtf and footer_en.rtf. Do I need to import all of these in their respective files or will localisation work (I doubt it)?
Question 3: Is there a way to implicitly pass all parameters that were passed to the main template, also pass to the subtemplates? (eg LANG parameter is passed to template_nl.rtf, who can use it in his data model, is there a way to automatically make LANG available for footer_nl.rtf's data model or do I need to explicitly pass it as a parameter in the <?call-template: footer?>) - again if the report locale is available in some way to the data model, it would be easy.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello,
Probably the easiest would be to use an OnDemand Process and some AJAX to pull your data into the extjs object.
Here's an example of an OnDemand Process.
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=11933:11
For data the easiest at the moment would be probably to use the Oracle XML functions to generate your data in XML and use that as your data feed.
You might want to take a look the new Interactive Reports included in APEX 3.1, while extjs has alot of functions there is a bit of setup involved , while the Interactive Reports all you need is a SQL query http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/irrs.html
You should search the forum for extjs as there has been quite a few successful integrations of APEX and extjs / YUI / jQuery etc.

  • Need help with Data Model for Private Messaging

Sad to say, but it looks like I just really screwed up the design of my Private Messaging (PM) module...  *sigh*
What looked good on paper doesn't seem to be practical in application.
I am hoping some of you Oracle gurus can help me come up with a better design!!
    Here is my current design...
    member -||-----0<- private_msg_recipient ->0------||- private_msg
    MEMBER table
    - id
    - email
    - username
    - first_name
    PRIVATE_MSG_RECIPIENT table
    - id
    - member_id_to
    - message_id
    - flag
    - created_on
    - updated_on
    - read_on
    - deleted_on
    - purged_on
    PRIVATE_MSG table
    - id
    - member_id_from
    - subject
    - body
    - flag
    - sent_on
    - updated_on
    - sender_deleted_on
    - sender_purged_on
***Short explanation of how the application currently works...
    - Sender creates a PM and sends it to a Recipient.
    - The PM appears in the Sender's "Sent" folder in my website
    - The PM also appears in the Recipient's "Incoming" folder.
    - If the Recipient deletes the PM, I set "deleted_on" and my code moves the PM from Recipient's "Inbox" to the "Trash" folder.  (Record doesn't actually move!)
    - If the Recipient "permanently deletes" the PM from his/her "Trash", I set "purged_on" and my code removes the PM from the Recipient's Message Center.  (Record still in database!)
    - If the Sender deletes the PM, I set "sender_deleted_on" and my code moves the PM from the Sender's "Sent" folder to the "Trash" folder.  (Record doesn't actually move!)
    - If the Recipient "permanently deletes" the PM from his/her "Trash", I set "sender_purged_on" and my code removes the PM from the Sender's Message Center.  (Record still in database!)
    Here are my problems...
    1.) I can't store PM's forever.
2.) Because of my design, the Sender really owns the PM, and if I add code to REMOVE the PM from the database once it has a "sender_purged_on" value, then that would in essence remove the PM from the Recipient's Inbox as well!!
In order to remove a PM from the database, I would have to make sure that *both* the Recipient has "purged_on" value and the Sender has a "sender_purged_on" value.  (Lot's of Application Logic for something which should be simple?!)
I am wondering if I need to change my Data Model to something that allows my autonomy when it comes to the Sender and/or the Recipient deleting the PM for good...
One the other hand, I believe I did a good job or normalizing the data.  And my current Data Model is the most efficient when it comes to saving storage space and not having dups.
Maybe I do indeed just need need to write application logic - or a cron job - which checks to make sure that *both* the Sender an Recipient have deleted the PM before it actually flushes it out of my database to free up space?!
Of course, if one party sits on their PM's forever, then I can never clear things out of my database to free up space...
    What should I do??
Some expert advice would be welcome!!
    Sincerely,
    Debbie

    rp0428,
I think I am starting to see my evil ways and where I went wrong...
    > Unfortunately his design is just as denormalized as yours
I see that now.  My bad!!
    > the last two columns have NOTHING to do with the message itself so do NOT belong in a normalized table.
    > And his design:
    >
    > Same comment - those last two columns also have NOTHING to do with the message itself.
    Right.
    > The message table should just have columns directly related to the message. It is a list of unique messages: no more, no less.
    Right.
    > Mark gave you hints to the proper normalized design using an INTERSECT table.
    > that table might list: sender, recipient, sender_delete_flag, recipient_delete_flag.
    > As mark suggested you could also have one or two DATEs related to when the delete flags were set. I would just make the columns DATE fields.
    >
    > Once both date columns have a value you can delete the message (or delete all messages older than 30+ days).
    >
    > When both flags are set you can delete the message itself that references the sender and the message sent.
Okay, how does this revised design look...
    MEMBER --||-----0<-- PM_DISTRIBUTION -->0-------||-- PRIVATE_MSG
    MEMBER table
    - id
    - email
    - username
    - first_name
    and so on...
PM_DISTRIBUTION table (Maybe you can think of a better name??)
    - id
    - private_msg_id
    - sender_id
    - recipient_id
    - sender_flag
    - sender_deleted_on
    - sender_purged_on
    - recipient_flag
    - recipient_read_on
    - recipient_deleted_on
    - recipient_purged_on
    PRIVATE_MSG
    - id
    - subject
    - body
    - sent_on
Is that what you were describing to me?
Quickly reflecting on this new design...
1.) It should now be in 3rd Normal Form, right?
2.) It should allow the Sender and Recipient to freely and independently "delete" or "purge" a PM with no impact on the other party, right?
Here are a few Potential Issues that I see, though...
a.) What is to stop there from being TWO SENDERS of a PM?
In retrospect, that is why I originally stuck "member_id_from" in the PRIVATE_MSG table!!  The logic being, that a PM only ever has *one* Sender.
I guess I would have to add either Application Logic, or Database Logic, or both to ensure that a given PM never has more than one Sender, right?
b.) If the design above is what you were hinting at, and if it is thus "correct", then is there any conflict with my Business Rule: "Any given User shall only be allowed 100 Messages between his/her Incoming, Sent and Trash folders."
Because the Sender is no longer "tightly bound" to the PRIVATE_MSG, in my scenario above...
Debbie could send 100 PM's, hit her quota, then turn around and delete and purge all 100 Sent PM's and that should in no way impact the 100 PM's sitting in other Users' Inboxes, right??
I think this works like I want...
    Sincerely,
    Debbie

  • Problem connecting PowerPivot's (Office 2013) Data Model deployed on SharePoint 2013 to data source.

    Hello:
    Our configurations is as follow :  SharePoint 2013 is on Server A;  SQL Server Analysis server (SQL 2014) is on DB Server B;
SharePoint databases (sp_ ...) and our Data Mart (SQL 2014) are on server B. All servers runs Windows 2012 OS.
On my desktop I built a simple Excel 2013 workbook with PowerPivot Data Model that imported several tables from our Data Mart (server B above). Then created a Power View report. Locally everything works fine.
But when I uploaded this workbook to our SharePoint PowerPivot gallery and was trying to refresh data, I got the connection error: It’s very long but the ErrorCode is “rsCannotRetriveModel”. The end of the error message is:
    'TemporaryDataSource'.</Message><MoreInformation><Source>Microsoft.AnalysisServices.SPClient</Source>
<Message>Call to Excel Services returned an error.</Message>
<MoreInformation><Source></Source><Message>We were unable to refresh one or more data connections in this workbook.

Our Excel Services on the SharePoint work fine and refresh data on different excel workbooks (with no Data Model) just fine.  We are using an unattended account for Excel Services to connect from SharePoint server to our databases. Found a few references
on the topic, tried them but with no luck.
    Please advise!

    Hi Jeff,
Firstly, I need to confirm whether you are refreshing Data connection in browser, since Data Refresh is not supported in Office Web Apps. Please refer more information in this article:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/excel_services__powerpivot_for_sharepoint_support_blog/archive/2013/01/31/powerpivot-for-sharepoint-browser-refresh-fails-data-refresh-not-supported-in-office-web-apps.aspx
From the error "Call to Excel Services returned an error", please verify the location of the
data source, for example an Excel workbook, is registered as a trusted location with Excel Services:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj219699(v=office.15).aspx
Since you are using unattended account for Excel Services to connect from SP to databases, I wonder if the issue occurs to unattended referesh, if so, please refer to:

    Hi,
the problem seems to be caused by an invalid query
selectobject (product) from Products product where product.PROD_ID = :prodId
    Should be
select object (product) from Products product where product.PROD_ID = :prodId
Please check the query you created in TopLink

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler -- JRE or JDK

    Hi,
Primarily, can any of you confirm that I need JDK (or J2SE SDK as the error message states) - and not just JRE as it is stated on the download pages on OTN?
I have just downloaded "SQL Developer Data Modeler" w/o JRE. Primarily because I already have JRE 1.6.0_17 installed, so downloading it bundled should not be necessary -- and secondly I would not want to risk intefering with the automatic software updating of JRE done by my company's IT support staff.
I may well be a complete Java amateur, but shouldn't JRE be sufficient, if you only want to run java apps?
    Cheers, K

    Hi -K-,
Yes, I do get an error.
I get the prompt: "Enter the full pathname for java.exe:"
    I enter: "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe"
Then I get the error message: "Cannot find a J2SE SDK installed at path: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6."
Which I interpret as JDK being a prerequisite for running the application -- though I do not understand why.
Looking back at the download I realize that I have version 2.0.0-570 and not the new 2.0.0-584. I will try that tomorrow.
    Cheers, K

  • PowerPivot removed table replicated into the data model on refresh

    Hey
I am facing the following problem which is absolutely persistent and annoying in nature. I am using a data model created with PowerPivot with connections to three different SQL servers and 25 tables. The bug is that every time I refresh my data, a table
that was initially added to the data model (and later removed) is replicated in equivalent number of tables that use this connection, which is currently around 12 tables, so I get 12 duplicates of the same unnecessary table on every refresh, named with the
name of the schema on the SQL server that is followed by a running number. Removing these from the data model on every refresh simply takes too much time on a daily basis. The additional undesired table which is created is what is defined in the SQL query
of the connection string of this connection.
I tried to solve this problem by zipping the Excel file and modifying this SQL statement present in the connection string in the connections.xml file in a way that it would not return anything, but this always leads into a corrupted workbook.
After encountering this I have managed to avoid this problem by making sure that the initial table I'm adding to the data model will remain in the model, but I really don't want to rebuild this current model. Is there any fix for this issue without
    rebuilding the data model?
Thanks for all the help in advance!

I am using 64-bit Office 2013 with the recent SP1 upgrade and the included PowerPivot plug-in on a Windows 8.1 machine.
I always create the connection by using "From SQL server" then fill in the server and log in details and use a ready SQL statement that I have written by using SQL Server Management Studio to import the initial table. For all the preceding tables
using the same server and schema, I always select it from existing connections and just paste the SQL queries required for any additional tables to the "Write a query that will specify the data to import", rather than using the table import tool.
I am not sure if it could have any effect that I've been using the type connection "From SQL server" although the database is really running on Azure (there is a possibility to select From Other sources > Microsoft SQL Azure, but the functionality
    seems the same).
I don't really understand what I should edit from the existing connections section. Just to clarify, apparently the Connection String parameters can be edited from PowerPivot, but not the Command Text which can be viewed from Excel Data > Connections
    > Properties, but is shown in gray with a message "Some properties cannot be changed because this connection was modified using the PowerPivot add-in."
In the data model I am using two sets of identical tables, but connected to two different servers that are running a database 1:1 in structure. Initially the problem considered only the other of these, but I accidentally reproduced it by, again, editing
the SQL query in the table that was initially imported when that connection was created (PowerPivot > Design > Table Properties). Now when refreshing I get tables that are structured as in what the "Connection Text" part of the connection would
produce, which replicated for the equivalent amount of additional tables using the same connection, so now I'm getting 12 tables (the number of tables using the same connection) each named "*schemaname1* Query", "*schemaname1* Query2",
    "*schemaname1* Query3" "*schemaname2* Query" and so on.
Personally I can definitely see a pattern here. If there isn't a table matching what has been specified in the "Command Text" that was described when the connection was created, then it for some reason runs this query anyway on every table that
    is using the connection.

  • Powerpivot Error on Refresh -- "We couldn't get data from the data model..."

I'm using Excel 2013 and Windows 8.1.  I have a spreadsheet I've been using for over a year, and I've just started getting this error message when I try to refresh the data.
"We couldn't get data from the Data Model.  Here's the error message we got:
The 'attributeRelationship' with 'AttributeID' - 'PuttDistCat9' doesn't exist in the collection"
Any idea how I can fix this problem?  I haven't changed anything related to that particular attribute.  All the data is contained in separate sheets in the workbook, so there are no external sources of data.
    Thanks.
    Jean

    Thanks for all the suggestions.
I found a slightly older version of the spreadsheet that still refreshes properly, so I don't think I have any issues with the version of Excel or Power Query.  (I've had this same error before, and I believe I applied the hotfix at that time.)
I think this problem started after I updated a number of the date filters in the pivot tables.  I haven't made any changes to the data model, and the only updates I've made were to add data (which I do all the time), and to change the date filters on
    the pivot tables.
As suggested, I added a new pivot table querying one table (the table with the attribute that shows up in the error message), and it worked fine.  I can also refresh this pivot table.
Then I tried adding a pivot table which went against several tables in the data model (including the table in question).  The pivot table seemed to return that data properly.  However, when I tried to refresh it, I got the same error message ("we
couldn't get data from the data model...").
Dany also suggested running the queries one at a time to see which one is in error.  Without checking all the pivot tables, it appears that any which use the table "HolePlayedStrokes" generate the error (this is the table with the attribute
mentioned in the error message).  Pivot Tables without that particular table seem to refresh OK.  Unfortunately, that is the main table in my data model, so most of the pivot tables use it.
Any other suggestions?  I'd be happy to send a copy of the spreadsheet.
    Thanks for all the help.
    Jean

  • Re: [iPlanet-JATO] Data model(Dataobject in Nd5)

    Sn,
    Computed columns need special attention.
The migration tool creates a QueryFieldSchema for each Model (DataObject).
The schema is populated with entries for each of the "data fields" needed by
    that query. For example:
    FIELD_SCHEMA.addFieldDescriptor(
    new QueryFieldDescriptor(
    FIELD_NDNWORDERS_ORDERID,
    COLUMN_NDNWORDERS_ORDERID,
    QUALIFIED_COLUMN_NDNWORDERS_ORDERID,
    Integer.class,
    false,
    false,
    QueryFieldDescriptor.APPLICATION_INSERT_VALUE_SOURCE,
    QueryFieldDescriptor.ON_EMPTY_VALUE_EXCLUDE,
The query field descriptor describes the "metadata" for a given field:
    QueryFieldDescriptor(java.lang.String logicalName, java.lang.String
    columnName, java.lang.String qualifiedColumnName, java.lang.Class
fieldClass, boolean isKey, boolean isComputedField, int insertValueSource,
    java.lang.String insertFormula, int onEmptyValuePolicy, java.lang.String
    emptyFormula)
There is also a SQL Template generated for select statements:
static final String SELECT_SQL_TEMPLATE="SELECT ALL ndnwOrders.OrderID,
    ndnwOrders.CustomerID, ndnwOrders.EmployeeID, ndnwOrders.OrderDate,
    ndnwOrders.RequiredDate, ndnwOrders.ShippedDate, ndnwOrders.ShipVia,
    ndnwOrders.Freight, ndnwOrders.ShipName, ndnwOrders.ShipAddress,
    ndnwOrders.ShipCity, ndnwOrders.ShipRegion, ndnwOrders.ShipPostalCode,
    ndnwOrders.ShipCountry FROM ndnwOrders __WHERE__ ";
    public
So for computed columns you need to do two things:
    1. You need to adjust the SELECT_SQL_TEMPLATE to reflect your computed
column instead of the "simplistic" column name that appears there by
    default.
    2. You have to "alias" that column and provide the value of the alias in the
columnName position of the QueryFieldDescriptor. This is needed so that the
model will be able to dereference the computed column in the result set.

  • PowerPivot Data Refresh Fails - We cannot locate a server to load the workbook Data Model

    Hello,
I have installed sql01\PowerPivot instance of Analysis services on my existing SQL Server and configured it per Configure Power Pivot for SharePoint 2013
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn456880(v=office.15).aspx . I did not install a second Database Engine on the server.
I created an Excel 2013 workbook using the Excel 2013 PowerPivot add-in and saved it to my SharePoint BI Center Document library.
When I try to refresh my workbook, I get 2 errors in the SharePoint log.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2756665?wa=wsignin1.0 indicates the sproc is deprecated, but that does not help me fix the issue.
    Log errors:
Following error occured while trying to execute a sql query: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904):
Could not find stored procedure 'DataRefresh.GetSchedule'.
EXCEPTION: NoAvailableStreamingServerException: We cannot locate a server to load the workbook Data Model.
    macrel

    Hi Marcel,
Based on my research, it seems that you have Microsoft SQL Server 2012 PowerPivot for SharePoint 2013 add-in installed on a computer. When you perform a data refresh operation on some PowerPivot workbooks in Microsoft SharePoint 2013, you receive two error
    message.
As to the first error, this issue occurs because the Custom Properties on the Excel workbook are not correctly cleared before you set a new serialized schedule. This causes an extra custom property to remain after you set the new schedule. Therefore, the
new schedule fails. To fix this issue, please
install Cumulative Update 9 for SQL Server 2012 SP1.
As to the second error, please
running a repair using PowerPivot configuration wizard for SharePoint 2013. For more information about Troubleshooting PowerPivot Data Refresh, please see:

  • External Data Refresh Failed. We cannot locate a server to load the workbook Data Model. ThisWorkBookDataModel

    Hi All,
I have been trying to fix this for days now. I have tried solutions in many articles but to no avail. So while the error message is something you may have seen may times, I just can't find a solution in my case.
    This is the error:
And in text just in case the image isn't viewable:
"External Data Refresh Failed. We cannot locate a server to load the workbook Data Model. We were unable to refresh one or more data connections in this workbook. The following connections failed to refresh: ThisWorkBookDataModel."
What is worse is I have checked the ULS (SharePoint Trace Logs), the Event Viewer Logs and the OWA Logs and I cannot find a specific error that would help pin point the problem.
    Excel Workbook
So what am I doing? I have an Excel 2013 workbook and I create an "SQL Server" connection to the AdventureWorksDW database, add a pivot table and a pivot chart, test in in Excel and all works fine.
I save the Excel workbook to SharePoint 2013 and then select "Data" then "Refresh All Connections" and then I get the error in the picture above.
Even more puzzling is I have another Excel workbook that also has pivot tables and pivot charts in the AdventureWorksDW2012Multidimensional cube database in "SQL Analysis Services" and this works fine. Hmmm.
    My Environment
My environment is Windows 2008 R2 Server, SharePoint 2013 with the April Service Pack1 and a separate server with OWA2013 SP1. It has an SQL Server 2008 R2 database which has been upgraded to SQL Server 2012.
    Data Model Settings
In Excel Services this is set to my server name which is "server-name". As I do not have instances all I can enter is the server name. As this works everywhere else including the workbook outside of SharePoint I do not think this is the problem.
    But I could be wrong.
    Unattended Account
I have set this up for the PowerPivot Services App and Excel Services App.
    ODC Connections in Excel
I have tried all 3 authentication modes, Windows, Secure Store ID and "None" which is the unattended account. I have not tried the other connection types, should I?
    Not in WOPI
I am not in WOPI mode.
    AD Accounts
I have added permissions in the SharePoint Services and SQL Server, and as they work in Excel outside of SharePoint, I do not think it is a permissions issue. I could be wrong of course, but the problem is in one of SharePoint, OWA, AD,
SQL Server, Excel, and Windows Server.
    Isolate the Error
Below is a list of errors I think are relevant but they do not tell me much. The SharePoint logs are not really giving me an error that tells me what to do and where to do it, or even why it cannot refresh, (perhaps not noticeable by the untrained eye).
Problem with SQL Server Not Analysis Services
So my cube database in analysis services works fine in SharePoint/OWA but not the databases in sql server. This is my best clue but I have no idea what it means. Why would it work with an Analysis Services connection but not an "SQL Server" connection?
    It Works Outside of SharePoint
If I run the excel worksheet outside of SharePoint all works fine. When inside OWA this is where the refresh error occurs.
Errors from Event Viewer on SharePoint Server using ULS Viewer
"Failed to create an external connection or execute a query. Provider message: There are no servers available or actively being initialized., ConnectionName: , Workbook:"
"Refresh failed for 'ThisWorkbookDataModel' in the workbook 'http://server...'. [Session: 1.V22.26itT0lx8piNFeqtuGVhN214.5.en-US5.en-US36.98c0e158-9113-46e9-850e-edda81d9ed1c1.A1.N User: 0#.w|ad\testuser1]"
And an error in the ULS under the "Data Model" category:
"--> Check Deployment Mode (server-name): Fail (Expected: SharePoint, Actual: Multidimensional)."
This last error, as it turned out, defined the problem concisely, although I was yet to work out what it meant in some detail.

I finally solved this myself (or should I say with the help of several key articles).
The refresh did not work because the database was not in "SharePoint Mode". Yes, SQL Server has modes, 3 of them in fact.
If you installed SharePoint to the default SQL instance which would be called <servername> then you cannot use this default instance for Excel 2013 workbooks in OWA 2013 because the refresh only works if the database is in SharePoint mode.
So what are these 3 modes? The Deployment Mode property in the msmdsrv.ini file has them as:
0 = Multidimensional mode (the default whenever you install SQL Server normally)
1 = PowerPivot for SharePoint mode
    2 = Tabular mode mode
How do you know what mode you are in? That's easy, open SQL Studio Manager and connect to all your SQL database engine instances (ignore Analysis Services or SSRS as they are not database engines). If you only have the default instance then that is almost
definately in Multidimensional mode which is the default and what SharePoint installs its databases to.
You must have an instance called <servername>\POWERPIVOT. This instance is the "sharepoint mode" needed, and the default instance name when you install an SQL instance in this mode.
If you don't see <servername>\POWERPIVOT in SQL server then you are not in "sharepoint mode". It is more accurate to say, you do not have an instance that is in sharepoint mode. This is because you cannot simply switch modes on an SQL server.
You have to install a new instance in the required mode, thats the only way.
That's easy enough. Load up the SQL Server setup CD and run setup. Install a brand new instance and select "SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint" when you get there in the wizard.
Now you will have the default instance that stores all the SharePoint databases and that is in mode 0, and a new instance called <servername>\POWERPIVOT that is in mode 1. The "<servername>\POWERPIVOT" instance connection is what you
will use for Excel 2013 when rendering in OWA 2013.
You also need to ensure OWA 2013 is not in WOPI mode for Excel worksheets. See the last link below for more information about WOPI.
Next you should go to the Excel Service App in CA and click Data Model Settings and add the <servername>\POWERPIVOT instance.
Then you have to either turn off the firewall on the SQL server machine, or create an inbound rule on the Windows firewall to open the TCP port for the <servername>\POWERPIVOT instance:
    1. Start Task Manager and then click Services to get the PID of the MSOLAP$InstanceName.
    2. Run netstat –ao –p TCP from the command line to view the TCP port information for that PID.
Finally, you can now create Excel 2013 workbooks that run in OWA without refresh errors, as long as you are connecting to the <servername>\POWERPIVOT instance. Hooray.
