Locate rogue java process eating swap space.

How can i find a rogue java process (lwp) eating up swap space ? The system is very low on swap but has half of memory free.

I'd start with ps -e -o vsz,pid,args | sort -nThe process with the largest VM footprint will be on the bottom.
How are you measuring that swap is being eaten? Are you using 'swap -s'? Is it mainly going into allocation or reservation?

    I've got a 2-node Cluster (SC 3.1) on Solaris 10x86 606 running. Uptime is about 171 days. noticed a java process allocating about 1.3 GB of RAM. This happens only on one node. The other one shows max. 256 MB allocated by a particular java processes.
    Is there a memory leak in the SC3.1 software?

    Which java process is it? If it is cacao, then you've hit CR 6359362. It doesn't look like there is a fix just now, but the workaround is to disable cacao from starting up. See the CR for details.

  • Arch process using more swap space

    Hi,
    DB : 11.2
    OS : Aix 6
    While taking archive backup by oem,only 9 archive process consuming more swap space.
    The parameter value is LOG_ARCHIVE_MAX_PROCESSES=15 at db level.
    Why only 9 archive process use swap space at os level?
    how to determine all the archive process needed?

              I've set weblogic java to run on Xmx1534m with swap space 2Gb. It seems like we always encounter out-of-space during jsp compilations. This happens whenever the system crunches on available swap space. Any ideas what to adjust for, such as system paramters.
              

    You can use compiler class instead of external compiler and compile
              in-process. I use

    Can someone help me with this error?  At random times the application crashes and I get this error.

    Part of the HS_ERR_PID says:

    Does that mean you are running CF8 without updater1 applied? If updater1 was there I would expect JVM 1.6.0_04. Give that is correct you could apply updater1 and once that is done even update the JVM to a more current version. I see Java Dev Kit 1.6.0_23 is current, I have successfully used CF8 with 1.6.0_22.
    There might be some interesting detail in the coldfusion-out.log file which likely is in [CF]\runtime\logs or [Jrun]\logs pending server or multiserver.

    My Application(a Desktop application) through the following exception
    Can any one please help me finding what are the possible reasons and solution for the below error?

    Out of memory they can result from different causes:
    - The application is consuming too many resources inappropriately
    - The application is opening and not enough threads are closing, leaving no space for the JVM
    - You lose the connection with database, causing the connection pool is saturated, which makes the memory of the container is depleted and reaches its peak.
    - The container does not have sufficient resources or is not tuned to meet the load generated. But would recommend to discard the above before using this option, because when using this option could work around the problem but could not really be attacking the cause.

  • OOM Killer is killing the Java processes without using the swap?

    Hi All,
    We are using RHEL 5 64 bit on blade server CISCO UCS B230-M2.
    Below is the memory details on the server. I could see from the sar -r command it did not used the swap memory at all but it calls the OOM killer everyday.

    It looks like you experience low memory exhaustion. The kernel uses low memory to track allocations of all memory and the more memory you have, the more low memory will have to be allocated. When low memory is exhausted, it doesn't matter how much high memory is available, the oom-killer will begin killing processes to keep the server alive. There are a number of bug reports and patches available regarding this problem affecting Enterprise Linux kernels 4.4 - 4.8. Other solutions are to move to a 64-bit kernel or use 32-bit hugemem. Are you running NFS?
    Perhaps you might want to try the following:
    # cat /proc/sys/vm/lower_zone_protection
    You can try to increase the value and see what happens:
    # echo "250" > /proc/sys/vm/lower_zone_protection
    To set this option on boot, add the following to /etc/sysctl.conf:
    vm.lower_zone_protection = 250
    As a last resort effort, you can disable the oom-killer. This option can cause the server to hang, so use it at your own risk.
    Check status of oom-killer:
    # cat /proc/sys/vm/oom-kill
    Turn oom-killer off/on:
    # echo "0" > /proc/sys/vm/oom-kill
    # echo "1" > /proc/sys/vm/oom-kill

  • How to find which sql or process that is causing lots of swap space

    Hello,
    There is a lot of swap space going on constantly. The SGA is 18gigs and PGA is 2 gigs. The swap space is 19gigs. How to find which processes or sql statements that are using a lot of sga and paging? The database is 10.1.0.5. and the tool OEM 10g. Thank you in advance.

    v$sort_usage or v$temp_segusage give temporary tablespace usage.
    To get PGA memory by session, you could use insteadv$process.

  • Memory space using a 32bit Java process on Redhat Linux

    I have a java process that I need a lot of memory for. Its a 32 bit process, and I have no desire to have it as 64bit due to the huge pointers it forces.
    So I know I can turn to Solaris where I will have close to 4GB of memory available for this process (right?). But are there Linux alternatives? I am especially curious regarding Redhat on intel64 machines as I have (which is the common desktop hardware nowadays).
    I heard about the hugemem kernel for Redhat, but I am lost understading its nature. It is said it is not available for v.5 for x86. So is it available for the intel64 processors as I have? And what is the max memory space for a java process?
    Any other bit of information about java 32bit process running on a linux flavor on an intel64 machine will be greatly appreciated.

    I'd say this is normal. There are a few things to consider when looking at an application like this:
    1. The 14 MB your process consumes include the memory required to load the java virtual machine. That is, all the base classes, native links, the just in time compiler etc. 14 MB isn't a lot, all things considered.
    2. When you display a message box, java will load additional classes and resources. They increase the heap size, though not really by 4 MB. Java preallocates portions of memory for the heap. If, for instance, your application consumes 16 MB of memory and you allocate another MB, the heap size may grow to 32 MB. Having a free section of heap space to spare increases performance, since java won't have to ask the underlying system for free memory every you create an object. You might want to check out your program in JVisualVM (deployed with every JDK6), which will tell you how much of the allocated heap size is really in use, or you can rely on the according methods in the Runtime class.
    3. The JVM is capable of 'heap shrinking', meaning it will return allocated sections of memory to the OS once in a while. However, it will not do so unless the heap size is significantly larger than the used portion of the heap (otherwise, it would defeat the purpose of preallocating memory). So if you allocate 2GB of RAM when clicking your button and allow this memory to be cleared by the garbage collector, you'll observe that the heap will shrink again eventually.

  • Where is the Swap space located

    I want to install Solaris 8 on my x86 (AMD Athlon) machine. I have arrived at a point where the installer prompts for the starting cylinder of the swap space. It wants to set it to Cylinder 3.
    Disk layout is as follows
    1. Primary FAT32 Win98SE 5 GB
    2. Ext. FAT32, beloning to Win98 2x 5GB = 10GB
    3. Primary Solaris 4.7GB
    As I don't want to delete my system partition (1) I want to know what cylinder I have to set. Is "3" referring to the third cylinder of the entire disk (which would surely overwrite Win98) or does it refer to cylinder 3 on partition 3 (which would be no problem)? Or should I set it manually to the starting cylinder of the solaris partition?
    All dual-booters not having solaris on the first partition of the disk...what did you select??

    I refered the metalink document id: [ID 761960.1]
    Database Instance Using Swap Space When There is Plenty of Free RAM metalink note [ID 761960.1]
    and tried the disabling the sga_max_size and memory_max_target and memory target with all different combination but no use.
    We have one more box where same setup was configured in solaris platform but there the above memory parameters are not disabled but it is not using swap space it takes memry only from physical RAM
    Can any one throw some lights on this issue. It wopuld be great if I come to know where the exact problem

    I didn't say I am not using 11gr2 memory parameters I am using all the automatic memory parameters but the thinks is as per the metalink note I tried by disabling the automatic memory parameters. but that didn't help me in preventing unnecessary swap usage. So I reverted. now it is using automatic memory parameters.
    so What is the solution for this?

    When I am monitoring my system using TOP, all of my java process is running well over 350M. The Size field is showing 470M and the RES field is showing 350M. But my Xms and Xmx is set to 256M. Is this mean the applications are using SWAP space?

    Not necessarily. The total memory used by the JVM process will always be more than the Java heap size, specified by ms and mx. Memory used by the JVM for internal management, memory allocated in native code and memory allocated for the permanent space are all allocated outside of the Java heap space.
    You could be using swap space if the total memory reserved by all applications and the OS in the system exceeds the physical RAM installed.

  • Do we need SWAP Space?

    Hi Folks!
    I am running Archlinux 64bit on my System with 4096 Mb RAM. I use my System for Programming (Java, C), Gaming (UT2004, Enemy Territory, True Combat Elite, Doom3, ....), Distributed Computing (Boinc), Email, Surfing the Net, Watching and Converting Videos , Picture processing (Gimp) and Office work in general (Printing, Writing, ...).
    There was never a lack of memory on my System and my Swap Space, which have an amount of 2000 Mb, is never used.
    I would shrink it to 512 Mb, but i would not delete this partition.
    By the way: i do not use the hibernate Funktion. In that case i should give at least 4096 Mb to the Swap Partition.

    Now if you know that the maximum memory usage you can achieve doing something productive is lower than your mem, then it is fine.
    Actually I have only 1gb and no swap, the only times I had problems is with this octave compilation, and I was not even using the box at this point, I just let it compile, so I did not lose anything.

    Using Oracle 10gR1, Solaris 9.

    Pga_aggregate_target = 2G and after checking the v$pga_target_advice, it shows optimal.
    Currently we have a issue of swap space getting used up nearly 100%. The system was out of memory and can't run any application

    Now why does oracle use up all the swap space and what can be the workaround to avoid this in future?Oracle only use what is needed to perform the client requests that it receives. If the client request a mountain of data to be moved/processed, Oracle will try to oblige. If that mountain topples and crushes server resources, it is not Oracle that is to blame for trying to do exactly what was requested from it.

    We have a problem in a production environnement. The JVM crashes every time with the log file below.
    The application which is running don't occupate all memory and we don't understand why an outofmemory exception is raised.
    It's not probably due to an allocation inside the application because the exception should be an outofmemory exception : Java Heap space.
    Please, somebody can help me to understant what append or to give me some advices?
