Locate to find specific file

I'm trying to find an exact, one-off, file in my home directory, but locate is giving me various options:
locate 9.txt
gives me 9.txt & 99.txt; how can I find the specific file?

locate 9.txt | grep '^9.txt$'
except locate is going to give you path information so may
locate 9.txt | grep '/9.txt$'
Or you could try the 'find' command:
find $HOME -iname '9.txt'

  • Type in file location in Finder or file selector windows

Is there any way I can get a text field, preferrably with filename completion, where I can simply type in the location of a file or folder? In the Finder or file selector dialog, that is?
Yeah, a directory GUI is nice, but in some cases it is actually faster to write the name than to track down and click through a chain of folder icons. I mean, while still using the GUI - not doing everything in the shell. And just being able to see the path to the directory you're looking at may be useful, too...

Whoops. Somehow I forgot about Go->Go To Folder, and overlooked it when trying to find it, when I wanted to do this for the first time in a while. How embarassing...
This interface is of course also available in the file selector via the normal shortcut (ShiftOptionG)
Even "more direct" access to folder location would sometimes be nice, though...

  • Finding specific files in Time Machine archives

So I have a whole bunch of audio files of different lines from 2001: A Space Odyssey on my computer. Or at least I did. They seem to have disappeared without a trace, and I can't track them down.
Is there any way to search the archives of Time Machine for specific file names or wildcards? It seems to me I can only browser the folder tree, but I don't recall where on the drive I may have stored the files.

Go to the finder and type Command-F. Type in the name of one of the files you want to recover in the search window. Beneath the search window click on File Name. Then without clicking on anything else click on the Time Machine icon in the dock. Click on the back arrow and Time Machine will take you back to the file when it was last backed up. If you click on the file it will show you the path in the bottom of the window. Then you can go to that folder, select all the files you want and click on Restore.
Peggy, I tried your method described above. I've had a folder that used to live on my desktop but that I deleted some time ago. Inside I had a file, collage2.tif. After entering the name and click File Name (and at this point, I get the result window showing no found file - I had not clicked on anything else in the search window), I click on TM's icon. In TM, I click on the back arrow, and TM goes back in time, but doesn't show the file. [In fact it goes back to the very first back up.] However, if I look in the desktop folder and inside the subfolder that I had deleted (it shows up now since I've gone back in time), there's the file. I then checked to see if that folder/file existed on a more recent date (I wondered if TM want back in time to the most recent day that file existed) and sure enough, it exists in more recent days.
I've tried this several times, searching "This Mac" and "Desktop", but TM doesn't find the file, even though I can manually find it.

  • Finder does not "find" specific file on my seagate external

I am new to Mac. (1 week). I have a seagate 1.5 TB external drive I used with my windows system. The drive just contains music, photos and PDF files. My new Mac recognizes the drive but when I go to search for a particular file using finder, it does not find it. I have to look through everything to find the file. Being a Mac newbie, it's likely something I'm missing.

You may need to add the external drive to Spotlight for indexing http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409

  • Find Specific File Type Group in Specific Folder

Hi, I dont know how to find a specific group of files (i.e. all movies, all music etc) in one specific folder (and its sub folders) on Snowleopard.
I do know how to find a single file type (i.e. .mov, .mp3)
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi,
    And, Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    In the search box, type
    kind:
(that's "kind" followed by a colon) followed by either
    movie
    image
    or
    music
I just tested it myself (I've never actually used it!) and it works a treat.

  • Application programming and finding specific files

    Hi there,
I'm doing some applications programming where the apps will actually be installed by something like InstallShield. The apps themselves need to be able to access many files and directories which all will be children of the directory of the application (e.g. MyApplication.dir will contain many files and directories, including the class files of the application itself).
But different OS's/users will place the directory in a different place so I cannot hard-code something like:
    new Image("C:\\MyApplication\\Images\\logo.gif");
Does anyone know how to get the the location of the MyApplication directory at runtime, please?
    Many Thanks.

set it relative to an environment variable
    kinda...
    apps_home\..\..\
    tht mst work

  • Finding specific files in TimeMachine.  I've somehow deleted all iCal content.

I've somehow deleted all Calendar content (historical and future).  I wish to restore from TimeMachine.  How do I find and restore the last iCal file?

If you synchronize any of your calendars with a server such as iCloud, disable that synchronization. Quit Calendar.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Calendars
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Enter Time Machine and restore that folder from the snapshot you want.
Relaunch Calendar and test. Your calendars should be as they were when the snapshot was taken. If you don't sync with a server, stop here.
If you do sync some of the calendars with a server, select each one in turn and then select
              File ▹ Export ▹ Export…
from the menu bar. You'll get ICS files with the filename extension ".ics".
Re-enable sync. Usually, all the calendars you just restored will be deleted. That's not a problem.
Create a new calendar on the server for each one you exported and want to sync:
              File ▹ New Calendar
Then import the calendar from the corresponding ICS file by double-clicking it. Follow the prompts to import the new events to the calendar you just created.
For calendars that you don't want to sync, just import them again. They'll appear in the calendar list under On My Mac.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

That functionality isn't available in Foundation.  You have to have SharePoint Server.  Not sure why it isn't in Foundation, but I've checked in the past and its not available and there is no way to turn it on.

  • Ran Migrate to Mac and can't find my files

I just got a MacBook Pro and am coming over from the PC world.  I ran the Migrate to Mac app and copied about 180GB of data from my PC to the MacBook (my Data Directory not in standard Microsoft folders).  iTunes found the music files and Finder shows random other files, but the bulk of the data is "missing".  I know it was copied because in the About This Mac storage graphic it shows 52 GB in photos and 89 GB in Other and only 50 GB free.
Without a File Manager, this old PC user is lost.  :-(
How do I find the files and pics?

    UPDATE:
After trying the suggestions above with no luck I decided to call Apple Support.  After 50 minutes on the phone with them the solution was to wipe the hard drive and start over from the factory settings, then redo the migration.  Even though we could search for and find specific files, he couldn’t actually locate them on the hard drive to find the other files that were likely saved in the same place.
His explanation was that the Migration to Mac routine doesn’t always understand layered directory structures found on PCs.  What the Migration Assistant is good at is taking files/docs from standard Windows folders (My Documents, Pictures, Music) and putting them in the same folders on the MacBook.  If you have data elsewhere, like in a c:\data directory with a bunch of subfolders like in my case, the Migration wizard can get confused and not know where to put them.
So the advice for those that have data outside the Windows standard folders, assuming you have to start over like me, is take all the docs/pics/files you want to migrate over and put them in the Windows folders, then run the migration.

  • How to delete a specific file type from a folder

    Hi,
I have folders with lots of zip or rar files, once I decompress those I want to delete the compressed files specifically. Is there any way I could manage that through Automator?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks Niel for the script, unfortunately I am too ignorant about running these on my own, I did save it in my user script library, but I would need instructions to run it. I would be really grateful.
I did try making up my own workflow using the given actions in Automator, the first action was to 'find specific files in finder' ending with .zip and .rar and then choosing another action which 'moves selected files to trash'. Unfortunately it ended up running only if I specify the path to the specific .zip file, which defeats the purpose. Any suggestions on the proposed workflow? Thanks in advance.

  • Itunes 11 can't find my files

My files are still on my computer, but, everything that wasn't also on my phone is showing up with the "!" icon. When I click on one of the error icons, it prompts me to locate the file. I do, then it asks if I want to use that location to find other files and I click OK. BUT, it can't find any other songs, even when the same folder has 20 more songs in it (and the rest of my files are in folders on the same level as the one I selected.)
I have a lot of music and very little was on my phone, so I really don't want to manually locate 4000 files.
I checked the preferences and the library location is set correctly. Any ideas on how to help this new version of itunes locate ALL my files. It will take me a month otherwise....

  • Search computers for specific files in domain

I need to find specific files in computers in domain environment. I tried several scripts (VBS and PS1) but I couldn't find antything really works for me. How can I manage this using PowerShell? (PS: I am a total newbie)
    Thank you very much.

As jrv mentioned, this forum is really for answering specific scripting questions. It's not a "write a specific script for me that meets my specifications" forum. Please understand that the forum participants are all volunteers and we really don't
have the resources to do free consulting. (See the forum guidelines at the top.)
If you need for someone to write a script for you, there is a
script request page. Be aware that you will need to write a detailed specification so the respondent knows exactly what you want to do. As with here, there is no guarantee of a response (or that someone will take the time to do this for you).
If this is critical to your business, you will probably need to pay a consultant.

  • Interactive "Finder" window of specific files

    Hi!
Is there a simple way to create a custom view of the filesystem from an obj-c program? Ie. a window with a list of specific files in the Mac filesystem that can be manipulated like opened, dragged to trash (removing them from their original location), etc.
Basically I start out with a list of paths - files around the system, in several folders, etc. -, and want to display this list as a window with file icons to the user, basically like a Finder window, to manipulate and work with. I'd like filetype icons and/or previews, context menu, drag-and-drop, etc., as if it were a folder opened in Finder.
Is there some built-in API code I can use to do this in a simple way? If not, what do I need for it to work? Where should I look in the dev documentation?

the spotlight is set up to view all file types. im looking for a specific set of pictures, but they just dont show up in the finder search. they are there tho, coz i can look thru them. they show up when i import them to iphoto, but i dont use iphoto
