Locating timecode break

I shot a concert. I chose capture now to capture the project and let the capture process occur while I went to sleep. In the morning I was confronted with over 200 separate clips of a 60 minute concert. The capture process captures clips that begin and end in lengths between 25 frames and 1 min 20 seconds at the most.
I shot with a Panasonic DVX 100B in 30fps. I am using a Canon ZR800 to play the tape I am capturing.
Any ideas on how to get a straight capture of the concert without the stops and starts?

Try using the camera that shot the footage.
There's likely not TC breaks in the actual recording I'll bet, and the canon you used is probably reporting them when they aren't really there. Pretty common with consumer canon cameras.

Timecode breaks could be caused by:
1. Actual timecode breaks on the tape.
2. Dirty heads in the playback system.
3. Bad Firewire cable.
4. Capturing to a USB hard drive
5. Capturing to an improperly formatted hard drive
6. Capturing while an anti-virus program is running
If you're using Capture Now, try setting FCP's Device Control to Non-Controllable Device.

Error: "Locating Timecode Break"

I'm trying to capture some raw footage for a project. About 2 minutes into the capture, I get an error message saying "Locating Timecode Break". The capture stops - or almost stops - the camera keeps playing very slowly, one frame at a time. So when I finally hit the 'esc' key, I get another message saying that the 'audio sample rate of captured files does not match the sample rate of source files" (and it continues). I've restarted the computer, but the same thing keeps happening, at the same point on the (DV) tape.
I'm using the same camera, computer and software that I always do. Any ideas about what could be causing this?

Please give your full system specifications, what computer, what drives, what camera or deck, how everything's connected, what settings are on the media, what settings you're using in Final Cut, and finally what version of the software, of the OS, and of QuickTime are you using
There could be two separate things here: one, there might be timecode breaks on the tape, which the capture process is trying to navigate around; and two, there is a mismatch between the audio sample rate you shot and the settings you used to capture the material.

Capturing issues-audio sample rate & locating timecode break

I am a first time FCP user.
I am working on an educational video with hours of DV source tapes.
The source tapes are from a 2R50MC Cannon mini DV camcorder also used as the deck I am capturing from via firewire. My scratch disk is Maxtor III 500GB external drive hooked up via a firewire (I'm realizing the firewire is years old could that be a problem?)
In my first capture test I captured 1 minute of tape by setting in and out points and after completeing the capture I received an error message—"The audio sample rate of one or more of your captured media files does not match the sample rate on your source tape. This may cause the video and audio of these media files to be out of sync. Make sure the audio sample rate of your capture preset matches the sample rate of your tape."
For the past day I have been scouring the user manual, this discussion group and training tapes from Lynda.com and can not resolve this issue. I have determined that the source tape is 12 bit or 32 kHz and yet can not find a way to set up capture preferences to 32 kHz. Is this the problem/resolution? Page 320 of the user manual shows the QuickTime Audio Settings dialog box but I can't find it in FCP or Quicktime. Is this where I make the change to 32kHz?
After doing the first test, I tried again and ran into a new problem—it stopped capturing with the message: Locating timecode break [press esc to abort]. It never seemed to resume capturing and I pressed escape to abort. If I'm reading FCP time code window correctly I received this time code break message within a section I had already captured previously (with the audio sync warning).
I have done several capture tests at different points in the tape and on different tapes all with the same results. I've used the capture clip and capture now buttons. I've tested with drop frame turned on and off. Confirmed my setting of: At timecode break "Make New Clip." Confirmed my Easy Setup as DV-NTSC. My capture preset is DV NTSC 48 kHz. I've turned off and on FCP. Restarted my computer. Restarted my computer with the shift key down and ran permissions.
Any ideas are GREATLY appreciated, T.

I am concerned about available memory when capturing to my hard drive and the babysitting and extra steps involved considering the amount of tape I want to capture...but it does work that's GREAT!
This is always a concern, but in your case I think having the camera and external on the same bus was causing your problem. You may have to capture a little and then transfer, rinse and repeat. Just don't try to do too much at once and let your System Drive get too full, you'll run into other problems there. Slow and steady is the pace!

A few seconds into capturing "Locating timecode break" comes up

I have just installed FCE on my computer. I use a sony DVCAM deck. There are no TC breaks. I've tried many different tapes and tried a sony Z1 camera to play rushes but same thing happens.
Initially "Dropped frames were detected during the last capture attemp" happened with every tape within a few seconds. I turned this off. Now, within a few seconds of pressing "capture now" or through capturing a clip, the FCE starts locating TC breaks. I've tried leaving it to it, but it starts locating another TC break within a few seconds.
I've tried shutting down the computer and pulling out the cables.
I can view the rushes fine, but the visuals don't play propely when in capture mode.

I'm using a LaCie disk as a hard drive. A professional Sony DVCAM deck is connected to the computer through a fire wire.
I'm using FCE version 3.5.
What else do you need to know?

Capturing live footage and FCE is trying to locate timecode breaks

Hey,
I am using my FCE to capture live footage from each event that I have. I recently started to have a problem with FCE trying to locate time code breaks in the capture, which pauses the capture each time which is footage that I can't get back.
Is there some way to turn that off? I have been forced to use iMovie recently because of this problem but I really need to figure out why this problem would all of the sudden start to appear. Like I said it has worked fine for over a year and now all of the sudden it no longer works.

There are only two DV Converter presets in the list. I don't where thelaw3 is so I don't know how your converter box is set up so I can't tell which you should select. It's either PAL or NTSC. You need to read the manual for your converter box and look through the FCE manual.

What does "Locating Timecode break" mean?

This question from a novice (but did this a few times 2 yrs. ago with no problem). I am trying to capture from a VHS tape (not a movie or from TV). What should my users prefs (on the right side anyway) be so I can just capture the clip without this timecode thing coming up? Other times -- after I have checked and unchecked various options on the R side -- it seems to be capturing but when I finally Esc nothing has been recorded. Any help would be appreciated.

In AUDIO VIDEO SETTINGS choose DEVICES CONTROL PRESET then choose NON CONTROLLABLE DEVICE.
You should also spend some time with the manual.

'Locating Timecode Break' while capturing

I got the software update that claimed it would fix the time code break error while capturing using Final Cut Pro. I'm using an AV Converter to do this. These are the setting I have it on, as recommended by the directions on the box the converter came in.
Device Control: Firewire NTSC
Capture.input: DV NTSC 48 kHz
Time code break usually occurs at around one minute, sometimes much later, other times almost instantly. I've got a legit copy of Final Cut Studio 2, and my converter always worked fine when I used it with Final Cut Express. Tried cleaning tape heads, but that didn't seem to have any effect. I'm open to any suggestions at this point, and I'm hoping it's just something simple that I might be overlooking.

check the following:
you are capturing to an external drive and not the sytem drive
capture settings for non-controllable device
correct version of Quick Time for your combination of FC Pro and Mac OS
the analogue to Firewire box settings (if any) are set to NTSC, for Firewire output and analogue input and set to composite or Y/C as appropriate

Capturing issues looking for timecode break

I am using FCP 4.5 and capturing onto a G raid Sata drive. But the capture process is very fragmented it keeps taking in about 20 seperate clips per 40 min role of DV. The message that comes up in the capture window says it is searching for timecode break but there is not one on the tape.
Any tips?

Strange maybe, but as a shooter, I've seen material show 'timecode' breaks on footage I've shot, knowing there was no break in tape....occasionally within a rolling shot. (JVC GY-DV500 camera)
Could be the camera not laying a strong timecode signal...I've read that Canon's are notorious for this, though I've not experienced it myself...yet.
Turning the camera off/on is very likely a culprit here. Not to be condescending, but here are my camera procedures to eliminate timecode breaks...not that you don't know this already...
- Get in the habit of always rolling 5 sec. of tape before action starts and 5 seconds of tape after action ends.
- Try not to turn the camera off.
- Try not to do 'searches' on tapes that are being recorded on.
- If the camera is turned off, or you need to search back into the tape, make sure you do NOT roll past the end of the last recorded frame...preferable stop a couple of seconds prior to the last recorded frame, and begin recording there.
- If your camera is capable of generating Bars, try to record 10 seconds of bars in between scene or location changes.
-if you have to pop the tape out of the camera at any point, follow the above listed practice of cueing up to a couple of seconds prior to the last recorded frame, and start recording there to pick up continous timecode.
-Really, really try not to... (IOW - DON'T) use 'free-run' timecode. It will make editing an absolute nightmare...particularly for NLE's.

This is how the drive is initially formatted. Often drives are designed to work with PCs and MACs. If you drive is not formatted Mac OS Extended, you could see abbreviated captures as well...among other problems...
start/stop detect
This will take a long capture and place markers at the points the camera stopped/started rolling, allowing you to create subclips from the original long clip...Main Menu/Mark/DV Start/Stop Detect...the camera must have an internal clock running, and not all cameras support this feature.

Unable to locate timecode in batch capture

Hi there, I have been working on this problem for a while and would really appreciate some help.
I have a documentary project I have been working on for some time and have completed the EDL. I am now trying to batch capture the footage again in full res and am having problems with a couple of the tapes.
First the specs:
The video was shot on a Sony HDR-HC1 in HDV(1080) mode.
I am using this camera to capture the footage.
I am trying to recapture the footage in a sequence with the easy setting on HDV1080i50.
I had originally captured the footage in SD on an older version of final cut pro (I am now working with FCP6) and didn't realise that my 16:9 footage was actually all 4:3 letterboxed. To fix this problem I used the media manager to export and then in the new project batch capture all the footage again from the tape. The project uses 18 tapes, 16 of which were batch digitised with only minor troubleshooting required. However 2 of the tapes are proving to be very problematic. It seems that whatever clip I select on the tape it gives me a message saying "unable to locate timecode".
I have tried setting the tape to the exact location of the clip before selecting the batch capture, but the computer always seems to look for a spot which is 2-3 mins out of sync with the clip. For example, if the in point is 00:10:00:00 the computer will roll the tape to around the 00:12:00:00 mark and start jogging around there for about 30 seconds until eventually giving me the "unable to locate timecode" message. Looking in the information in the bins, the in and out points are accurate, its just that when I try to capture, the computer rolls the tape to the wrong position.
If anyone knows a workaround for this that will help me avoid having to edit the footage all over again I will be extremely grateful.

HI I have the same problem, the capture window says: Waiting for time code, the device must set in vcr mode and then This operation could not be complete as there is no video, the F!#!%$$ problem is very illogical ,at this mooring I do batch capture without a problem but since the second tape this problem starting, I update to FCP 6.0.4 and,. @@#%#@%#$ the first tape capture but the second not capture and the problem starting againd, note that IMOVIE capture the tape and work very well, iI replace fire wire, camera VCR and , I trayu with Canon, Sony, JVC and the problem persist , I have quicktime 7.4.5, FCO 6.0.4, note that I have two Macs with the same problem in both macs IMOVIE work like a PRO edition Software but FCP is very bad, I have with this problem a long time, I formated Mac, reinstall FCS2 many timers and the problem persist. IS not a problem whit easy setup or wherever , I download the FireWire SDK from Apple and test all connection with the applications of sdk and in all case , the camera and the fire wire are OK, the problem is with quicktime and FCP, If any one is working OK with FCP and DV NTSC devices and JVC PRO HD devices, please tell us HOW DO. I'm working with FCP since 2000 and in this month FCP makes me very UNHAPPY.

PCMCIA firewire card for G4 laptop (follow-up to excessive timecode breaks)

1.) It was recommended that I get a new firewire bus to resolve excessive timecode breaks when importing from a Canon camcorder to an external hard drive. I've been reading through posts on this topic...and saw getting a new firewire port mentioned a few times... How come when I called Apple to check on the cost of a new firewire card for my laptop Powerbook G4, I was told that nothing could be added without replacing the entire logic board? Am I missing something? I didn't say "PCMCIA firewire drive" - is that something special? Any idea of the cost to purchase and install?
2.) Apple recommended just capturing to my internal hard drive, and transfering the projects. Apart from this being cumbersome... I need a little verification: if I transfer PROJECT X to my external hard drive, then do I also need to transfer my Audio Render, Autosave,Capture Scratch, Render, Thumbnail, and Waveform folders? [I realize this is basic, but I'm wary of losing the information the project needs and getting it all messed up]

pcmcia is an card slot. If you have a 12" PB you may not have one.
If you have a pcmcia slot, buy the card. Slide the card into your computer and start up. Put the camcorder on the card and your fw drive on the port built-in to your computer. Even if this does not solve the timecode issues, it will save you other headaches in the future.
Question. Does capturing to your internal drive solve the timecode issues you are having?
I disagree with the advice of capturing to your internal drive and transfering the project after the fact. There are a bunch of reasons why, and all of them are qualified, so I hesitate to go further until I know whether or not capturing to the internal drive is making your timecode headaches go away.
I suspect capturing to the internal drive will not help the timecode issues which will make the whole point moot. But hopefully I'm wrong :>

When you talk to representatives from Apple, you have to be conscious that if they are not specialists in the area you are focused on their advice may be based on general recommendations from an IT or home user perspective. There is a difference between talking to a sales person on the floor of the Apple Store and someone from the Genius Bar. And the person at the Genius Bar may have a tremendous background in network installations, but never have opened FCP. Or you might get lucky and get a FCP savvy genius, who would be a bit weak when talking about some other area.
This is not a knock, just a reality. It is difficult to be deeply conversant with even one area. It is not realistic for the generalists you usually deal with to know the best answers to very specific questions.
I'm working toward becoming a certified trainer with FCP and it is not easy or cheap to become an expert at this one application, never mind all the possible applications and hardware combinations for wildly different needs and budgets.

Capturing some DV footage from camera, timecode break

When I'm capturing video from my DV tape on my camera it always back steps for a long while because of some timecode break. is there a way to just capture it ignoring the timecode break? Time code isn't so important. It's just some video from my parents vacation that I want to slap on to a dvd.

In FCP's preferences, set to create a new clip on Timecode break. Also set FCP's Device Control to "Non-Controllable Device" and use 'Capture Now.' Sometimes timecode breaks can be due to dirty heads in the playback device; try cleaning or having it serviced.

The quickest way to do that is to record directly from the source tape to a DVD recorder.

Timecode break, dropped frames

Hello Hello,
When capturing into Final Cut Express HD 3.0 an error appears that either says--dropped frames were detected, or timecode breaks.
In easy setup I switched over to DV-NTSC_DV converter and manually operated the camera. Dropped frames were detected.
I teach at a highschool that has a mac lab with two types of mac computers. The problem occurs on both computers.
The computer specs. Emac-osx 10.4.9
1.25 GHZ pwr pcG4
mem 512 MB
Intel Imac 10.4.9
1.83 GHZ core duo
mem 512 MB
We are running all computers with
quicktimepro 7.1.2
On one computer we updated to
quicktimepro 7.1.5
Problem still occured.
I am using both sony and canon mini dv to digitizing.

I read the previous posts, and the archive users and install trouble shoot looks like the fix to the problem, but with 30 computers and many highschool student users and projects on each of the computer, I cant do it. Please please apple do a patch for fce 3.0!

Advice on importing old mini dv tapes with timecode breaks

I've dug out mini DV tapes from storage which contain priceless (at least to me) family footage. Some of these tapes are close to 11 years old.
Before these tapes degrade and rot further, I'm trying to generate tape archive files on my hard drive using Final Cut Pro 10.1 from these old tapes.
The issue I'm having is with timecode breaks on some of the tapes. After a few minutes of an import, sometimes the video will go a little wonky and I'll get a timecode break and the import process aborts itself. When this happens, I'm forced to start the archive all over again from the beginning, as far as I can tell. If I get lucky, sometimes I'll get through the import after another try but other times the tape is so badly damaged that I can't get through the entire tape.
I believe there used to be a setting to tell Final Cut Pro to ignore these breaks. It now appears this setting is gone. Or am I missing something? If it's gone, is there some kind of workaround I can employ?
Otherwise, if Final Cut Pro isn't up to the task, can someone please recommend software that will help me convert my tapes to archives on my hard drive?
PS. I've used a head cleaning tape on my camera to limit the problem but it still happens with some of the tapes.

You need a DV device to be attached and recognized by your Mac.
Open QTime X.
File>New Movie Recording.
In the control bar click the small triangle.
A list of devices appears to record from.
Make the DV/camera selection and start capturing.
It's all manual start stop and very basic but does capture.

How can I prevent my Camera Archive import from being interrupted by timecode breaks?

I'm trying to create Camera Archives from my old mini-dv tapes. I have a Sony Handycam DCR-TRV22 connected via FireWire. When I start the Camera Archive import process, everything is fine for a while but then the process stops with a message about a break in the timecode preventing the archiving from completing.
Solutions to this problem I've seen online relied on changing import preferences in Final Cut 7. Unfortunately, I only have Final Cut Pro X and I'm not sure how to control this setting.
I don't really care about timecodes, I just want to dump the entire tape to disk so I have a backup of the tape but the timecode break is interrupting the process and making me get involved a lot more often during the import process.
Does anyone know how to force Final Cut Pro X to push through timecode breaks in a Camera Archive import?

To clarify, this problem is not simply making me get involved more, but is preventing the Camera Archive operation from completing.
