Location Bar Issue

In Firefox 3.6 when I would type the name of a webpage such as CNN, Youtube, or Yahoo into the Location Bar it would automatically take me to that website. Today I decided to give Firefox 4 RC1 a try a few days before the official release, and without changing any of my other settings, now when I enter in CNN without the .com after it, I go to the Google search page for CNN instead of the CNN website.
I have checked in about:config and browser.fixup.alternate.enabled is set to true.

The change between Firefox 3.6.* and Firefox 4 is how location bar search works. In Firefox 3.6 it uses Google "Browse by name" search. With the browse by name search, it performs a Google search and if there is a clear match it will take you to the site, otherwise it shows the Google search result. With Firefox 4 it just performs a Google search if you type something which is not recognised as a URL.
To get the Firefox 3.6 behaviour on Firefox 4 you need to change a hidden preference.
# Type about:config into the location bar and press enter
# Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
# Locate the preference keyword.URL, double-click on it and change its value to the link shown below

• Bookmark Locator Bar Issues

I have written in about this before; I originally set the "Location Bar" inside the Firefox settings NOT to suggest my bookmarks, but after a while it was starting to ignore that command and it would set itself back up after restarting Firefox to suggest bookmarks when typing in a web address. This problem was solved by setting up a new profile within Firefox. After that, this problem no longer existed.
Now as of today, the problem is back. I wish there was a way to contact developers of Firefox and let them know of this issue. If there are no other solutions out there except for setting up a new profile, fine but it's starting to get annoying that I have to go through this process everytime this problem happens.

Just to clarify:
* Can you successfully change the "When using the location bar suggest" option in the Options dialog (Privacy panel)? By that I mean, after you OK the change, when you go back into the dialog, it kept your change?
* If Firefox is allowing the change, is it working at least for the rest of your session?
* If you can fix it for the current session, but the change gets reverted after you exit and start Firefox up again:
** Please see this article: How to fix preferences that won't save (Your More System Details does show you have a user.js file, which overrides your previous session settings at startup, so definitely check that out)
** If you have utility, privacy, or security software that has a feature to lock or roll back unwanted browser settings changes (Advanced SystemCare, for example), you may need to turn off this feature in order to be able to save changes.
I noticed you have an extension named "Updated Ad Blocker for Firefox 11+". That actually is quite old now and if you want to use an ad blocker, Adblock Plus is more up-to-date so I suggest removing the old one and getting ABP.

• Using Firefox 4.0 Beta 4. When I open a link in a new window, the web address does not show in the location bar. Why?

When I open a web page link in "a new window" the link opens, but the web page information does not appear in the location bar. It is blank. If I open the link in a new tab, there is ho problem.
Further, if a open a link from the tab without a location in a new tab on the same window and then go back to the original tab, the location bar fills with the web address.
Have done this starting in several locations, so it not location dependent.

That behaviour is likely top be caused by an add-on, and in your case the likely culprit is IE Tab 2, the various versions of IE Tab have caused problems with Firefox 4 beta including issues with the location bar not being updated.
You can test to see if IE Tab 2 is causing your problem by disabling it and then seeing if the location bar in a new window shows the address. If it is not that add-on causing the problem, see troubleshooting extensions and themes.
For info, the IE Tab Plus add-on has been updated recently to improve compatibility with Firefox 4 beta, you may want to try that one instead. The latest version is available from http://coralietab.mozdev.org/installation.html

• When typing an address in the location bar and pressing enter, nothing happens and the site does not load. How can I fix this?

When I type a new URL in the address bar (or location bar), and I either type the complete URL or select from the drop down list, nothing happens. I hit enter, and the website does not load in the current tab, new tab nor in a new window. Exactly the same when I hit the green arrow to the right of the address bar. I am using Firefox 8, and all my add-ins are up to date.
It has been working before. The setting to get Firefox to open new pages in a new tab from the address bar is there, so it should open a new tab. But I get nothing at all!
Please help, how can I fix this?
Thanks,
James.

That issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

• How can I get Firefox 4 to display the URL of active tabs in the location bar so I can see and copy it?

The only URL that I ever see in the location bar is the last one I typed there. No matter which tab I activate, the last typed URL is displayed. When I need to copy the URL of an active tab to paste into an email or something I can't see it.
The location bar used to display the URL of each active tab and you could simply click in the address field and the URL would be highlighted so you could edit/copy it or jump to the end of a very long URL to see the final file name.
I can't get this feature to work and I really need this feature as I need to copy URL's quite often. When I have multiple tabs active I sometimes forget which one is for which domain and need to see the URL. It is very annoying to surf blind.
Please help me with this issue as quickly as possible so I can once again do my work easily and with the firefox browser instead of chrome. :(

A couple of possible causes.
The first is the file that stores details of browsing history and bookmarks is corrupt. For details on how to fix that see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite
Another possible cause is an add-on interfering with the location bar. To test this, use the procedure in this link - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes

• My location bar, tool bar (file, edit, tools, bookmarks, help) disappeared and cannot be restored. I have no back button, home button etc. the top of the screen is just an empty blue bar. Internet still works if I click on a hyperlink on the main page.

My location bar, tool bar (file, edit, tools, bookmarks, help) all disappeared and cannot be restored. I have no back button, home button etc. the top of the screen is just an empty blue bar. Internet still works if I click on a hyperlink on the main page.
The problem started when I turned on the computer this morning. I tried to install Mozilla 4 from your website and that installed but I still have nothing on the top.

It may be due to Firebug. Seeing as how you're a web developer, it's very possible you have this installed. The latest version, 1.7X a10, appears to cause everything you described. I downgraded to "a8" and that seems to have fixed everything.
I also recreated a profile from scratch before trying this out, so I can't guarantee it's definitely Firebug.

• I've edited the Keyword URL so it shouldn't be Google doing autocomplete in the Location Bar but it still is. How do I stop Google dominating my searches?

At first when I made the change it did go to the alternative search engine that I had under Keyword URL & it is still set as that (I've checked) yet when I type in website such as wikipedia & hit return its found & brought to me by Google. Note this is a location bar not search box issue.

• Page shift due to vertical scroll bar issue

I'm working through a vertical scroll bar issue in my design, using a ProjectSeven CSS page template. When testing the site in my browsers (FF/Safari/IE/Opera), and IF the scroll bar is not present, the entire page shifts to the left (the width of the scroll bar) when I click a link in the left column of my design. The page does not shift when the vertical scroll bar is present. Support at P7 suggested the following fix:
html, body {
height: 100.1%;
margin: 0 0 1px;
I've tried placing this markup in about ten different places but can't seem to find the right location in the code. Is it possible for someone in the forum to take a look at my page source and show me where/how to locate this fix?
See my test site at:
http://www.murcal.com/test_curvi_2.html
Thanks .  .  .  .

PZ,
I'd like to place the fix where you've suggested, but that's the whole issue.
I simply don't know where my CSS ends (duh). Is it possible that you show me exactly where?
Hopefully this is the right section of my code:
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

I've tried placing it in about ten different places, but I'm wrong everytime.

• Location bar does not display in CSH window

Good morning all,
I've got a RH8 project calling a custom CSH window. We want the location bar to appear in the help window so users can navigate forward and backwards among the topics.
I've created a new window in RH8 and selceted the Location Bar and Resizeable checkboxes under Properties (CSH API use only).
When I generate and test on my local system, the location bar does indeed appear. However, when calling the help topic from the web application, no location bar appears.
So, a couple of questions:
1. Where does RH8 store information on the custom window I created?
2. Is the file they're stored in human-readable? I'd like to check that what I'm doing in the RH8 UI is properly getting written to the files I'm sending to the developer.
Thanks for any insight you can provide.
Patrick

Hi Patrick
What you define using the WebHelp Window definiton just gets pushed out to a JavaScript file. The WebHelp API simply contains a function that causes a new window to present using the attributes you specify in RoboHelp.
You need to ensure your developer is properly coding the call.
Question for you here. Did you define a specific size and location as well? When you test the call, does the window open at the specified size and location? If not, you are seeing a definite issue with the call being made.
Cheers... Rick

• Bookmark search in location bar does not produce proper results

(note: I have hundreds of bookmarks) I search the word "idea" in the location bark (with prefs set as searching for Bookmarks) and only SOME of the bookmarks with "idea" in the name come up. I type "ideas" and they all disappear, even though there IS one with the word "ideas". This happens even in Safe Mode.

Does it happen in new profile? Make is as described at Managing profiles ; import the bookmarks into the new profile via the import/export to HTML feature in bookmarks - organize bookmarks window; change the Location bar search setting; check for the issue.

• Howoto remove the "goto the adres in location bar" button. and how to restiore firefox 2 theme like before.

Ok. trying FF30 again. after FF28 things wend in a terrible direction and technical mozila devs pinned you on FF28. sofar after a few versions later there's still no improvemnet. the firefox 2 theme is wrong now (wrong icons , contrast and color), the new ones look tgerrible and blurred. want the old sharp buttons back
also the "goto the adres in location bar" button is stil;l blend into the search bar box.
to get a bit working interface you need to install the following add-ons
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/firefox-2-theme-for-firefox-3x/
https://addons.mozilla.org//firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/
problem is i need both add-ons because the first one dont let yopu move the refresh, arrow stop buttons etc. not found any option to change or move then with firefox-2-theme-for-firefox-3x
lassicthemerestorer let you move and place the buttons back,
but corrupt the layout and also place wrong icons back.
I need the "firefox-2-theme-for-firefox-3x" theme like it where before, its the only best good and userfriendly one. waiting for fix.... until then rename FF30 and copy back FF28

I just thought I would mention I have just tried the addon Firefox 2, the theme, reloaded 1.0.7
* At least on my setup the icons look fine and are not blurry
* On Firefox 29 and later the location bar buttons can not at present be split off.
** http://www.varesano.net/contents/projects/firefox%202%20theme%20firefox%203x#comment-23582 <br />Possibly that will be added back later as an enhancement to the addon.
* I believe the classic theme restorer is still able to split buttons off from the location bar.

• Location bar

I am experiencing issues with the location bar. Every time I re-start Firefox after going into the settings in Firefox and telling the location bar to not show anything (history, bookmarks, etc...) my bookmarks still show up. Nothing has resolved this issue. I've reset Firefox several times on past occasions and nothing is working.
I am not going to continue re-setting Firefox either because I shouldn't have to go through this every time I run into this problem. It is extremely frustrating to have to go about resetting the program. My computer is up to date with its malware, spyware, etc.. scans so I doubt that is causing this issue.
Thank You.

Note that if you have visited a bookmarked site that this becomes an history item and thus will show as history and not only as a bookmark.

$props = mysqli_query($con, $query_limit_props) or die(mysql_error());
$row_props = mysqli_fetch_assoc($props);
?>

You have a lot of problems with your script below. First of all, you are using isset() incorrectly. The isset() function only tests if the field is set, not if it is empty. So even if the user doesn't enter anything, if the field is on the form it is set.
Next, why are you copying the value of one variable into another variable - $searchword = $search; ? What does that accomplish?
Finally, the argument you are passing to mysqli_num_rows() is a single row. You need to pass it the result set.
Fixed the main search bar issue, but still having problem with the num_row statement
Warning: mysqli_num_rows() expects parameter 1 to be mysqli_result, array given in /home4/mresnik/public_html/props_inventory.phpon line 47

• Location bar settings are Not rememberd when I close FF

Pfff okay So I set my location bar settings to > Nothing: If selected, the Location bar will not display results that match what you type.
then I close firefox, reopen and voila...It shows history and bookmars. Now funny thing is when i set the location bar to bookmarks, it Does Remember that.
So....What????
I dont want the locationbar to show my bookmarks,
Also, If I set Firefox To not remember any history, that works.
So why are my locationbar settings not working.

Privacy and computer cleanup programs can interfere with this (Norton, McAfee). If installed, adjust settings as necessary.
It sounds like the user.js file in your profile folder may be overriding preferences.
Please do the following:
*Click the Firefox button at the top left, then click the Help menu and select Troubleshooting information from the submenu. If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Help menu at the top and select Troubleshooting information from the menu.
*At the top of the page, you should see 'Show Folder.' Your profile folder will now be open.
*At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (File menu in Windows XP) and then click Exit
*Locate the user.jsfile and open it with a text editor such as Notepad
* Clear the contents of it and save the file.
If the above method fails to get that preference to save, you will need to Reset Firefox:
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to the Troubleshooting Information window in the Help menu.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
