Location of Parameter File (pfile)

Hello,
I like to know, does Oracle stores the location of Parameter file (pfile) in any of the object?
Thanks
Sameer

Yes if you use the Oracle Parallel server option.
By default an instance will start a database in exclusive mode and no other instance will be able to attach to the database.
To start multiple instances on the same db you need to start them in parallel:
startup pfile=$ORACLE_BASE/admin/sid1/initsid1.ora PARALLEL
then after changing your ORACLE_SID:
startup pfile=$ORACLE_BASE/admin/sid2/initsid2.ora PARALLEL
Note: There is actually alot more involved then this. See the Oracle Parallel Server documentation for your version at http://tahiti.oracle.com

  • Parameter file not found in the location as specified by infa workflow log

    Hi,
I am unable to find the Parameter file in the location, /u01/obi/inf_svr/server/infa_shared/Temp/SDE_ORA_APTransactionFact_ExpenseDistribution_Full_vxqbGa, as specified in the Informatica workflow log. But Informatica maps are succeeding without any error. Also Parameter file location specified by DAC is different ie /u01/obi/inf_svr/server/infa_shared/SrcFile and proper parameter file exist in this location. Please someone help clarify what is happening here and how the maps are succeeding with the parameter file as specified in th workflow log.

How to configure the task(Informatica workflow) which contains two sessions in it?
Because I found a recommendation that every workflow should have only one session in it and the session name must be same as that of workflow name. But my requirement is, I have to configure a workflow in DAC which contains two sessions in it.
Thanks a lot in advance for all your help sir.

Does anybody know, where is the file located ?
When I search I am getting two files. (init.ora and init.ora.txt)

The initialization file for the database is located in the $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory, and is called init<SID>.ora

  • Knowing service_name of my database; where to find parameter file.

    To All,
I have Oracle 9i. How can I find the service_name (inorder to specify it in the tnsnames.ora) of my database..?
Also Is it possible that the name of my parameter file in the location 'H:\orawin95\admin\thomas\pfile\' be init.ora ....? ie, without the instance name as a suffix to the filename after init. Or is the parameter file in some other location...?
    my oracle_home is 'H:\orawin95'
    db_name is : 'thomas'
    instance name is : 'toms'
    thanks in advance
    [email protected]

service name is nothing but your tnsname or the string you connect to the database from a client machine. Look into your tnsnames.ora file or to create one, use network configuration assistant.
You can have init file with suffixing its instance name, but, it would be good for administration purpose in the multi-instance, spefically, oracle. You can also keep the init.ora file in any directory that you need, the only thing is that you need to specify the file location when starting your database with pfile parameter with startup command.

  • Problem in Initialization Parameter file...Oracle10g

    Hi all,
I am working in oracle 10g.I created a pfile from an exiting spfile and changed the Processes parameter and then again created a spfile from this changed pfile.
Didnt delete the previous spfile and bounced the database.
At startup I encountered the error:ORA-01092.
Could any one suggest a solution and reason for the same.
    Thanks and regards,
    Nupur

You can always mention the location where u want ur spfile to be created while creating it from sqlprompt.
If u dont specify the path then it will create in
    "$ORACLE_HOME/dbs"..
When the oracle instance is started,it looks for the parameter file in the following order....
    1) spfileSID.ora
    2) default spfile
    3) initSID.ora
    4) default pfile
so even if u dont mention Pfile while startup and if u have an spfile the db will definitely start from spfile......

  • Find out the name of parameter file while oracle is running

can any one please tell me how can i find the name of oracle parameter file while oracle is running, i mean is there any parameter that specifies this thing, or is there any data dictionary view
second thing i want to change the default database i mean istead of starting the default database at startup the oracle should start the database that i specify,
i would be greatfull if any one could answer my questions

Ok, so you're running with SPFILE in default location. The file you speak about is used during the database create phase.
Just having a look at the file:
    c:\oracle\admin\orcl\pfile\init.ora.1142006183316I can say that:
    . The SID is ORCL
. You used DBCA to create the database
. DBCA started creating the database: Saturday 11 of February 2006 at 18:33
This file is used by the DBCA because when you create a database, you must have a parameter file in order to start the instance. This file is easily created as a text file (PFILE) first, then the instance is started. Once the database creation is over, the SPFILE is created from this PFILE. If you check the database create logs (in the %ORACLE_BASE%\admin\ORCL\* directory) you'll see a "CREATE SPFILE FROM PFILE" is ran after the database creation, or before, it depends, and the instance restarted in order for it to use the newly created SPFILE. After that, this file is useless.

    Yoann.

  • How can I display the correct enum ring value from a parameter file?

A user will make selections based on the menu ring (there are several of these) and then the values are saved for later use as a parameter (text) file. I have several menu rings which I write out to a parameter (text) file.
How can I take these text values back into the appropriate location in the menu ring. For example, if I have menuring_value at index 0, menuring_value at index 1, etc. how do I make sure that, when the par (text) file is loaded, the saved values are the ones displayed without erasing the displayed menu ring value and inputting the saved one (from the parameter file). I would like the text value to search the appropriate menu ring, make a match and then display that menu ring value when the parameter file is loaded.

If I understand your question, attached VI should have solved your doubt
In this example, Configuration File VIs are used to save & retrieve MenuRings' statuses.
As this VI is improvised, please further modify it to suit your needs.

  • Error in intitialisation parameter file, pls help

i am new to dba field. i created a database named "demo" suing dbca. but whenever i start i am getting the following error.

LRM-00109: could not open parameter file 'D:\ORACLE\ORA92\DATABASE\INITDEMO.ORA'
    kindly help, thank you.

i tried adding a control file using alter system set command and when i queried v$controlfile, i got the perfect answer.
later i shutdown the database and and deleted the newly created control file manually.
after that i tried adding a control file in pfile and i tried staring the database, from then i started getting the error.
again i deleted the whole pfile and copied another database's pfile and edited it as per the requirement. i tried to open the database using pfile, and thus i m getting the errors...

--One question,During start the database(startup) how can it looks the particular pfile ?
startup command how to identify the exact pfile if there are three or more different pfile with different name?
    Thnaks,

Oralce will look for a mfile matching with the SID of your database. Thats why the file naming convetion is init sid .ora. If oracle cant find that same named file, the rror is returned to you.

By default, oracle will look first for a spfile named "spfile<ORACLE_SID>.ora". Lacking that, it will try to find "init<ORACLE_SID>).ora.
Eventually,I would like the db to read the spfile spfileorcl.ora during the startup. How can I achieve this?
Once you have started the db (I believe a startup nomount will be sufficient) you can issue CREATE SPFILE ... Details are in the fine SQL Reference manual found at tahiti.oracle.com
BTW, "open" is the default behavior of "startup", so no need to specify it. A simple "startup" does the same thing.

Please reply soonYou know that the modifications you'have done on spfile are not active until you restart DB. So why don't you want to modify the spfile by "alter system ... scope=spfile" commands? I don't see the point to create pfile, modify it and recreate spfile...

  • Parameter files in Oracle 9i

    Hi.
I have an easy question for you...
Where is the parameter file for each SID with 9.2 on Windows? My guess it is:
    ORACLE_HOME\admin\ORACLE_SID\pfile\init.ora.12345
(bunch of numbers at the end)
This is different from 817, where the file was init_SID_.ora.
Could someone explain if this is the only parameter file?
    Also, what is spfile?
Or, please point me to some documentation that explains this...
    Thank you.
    Robin

    Hi Robin,
Here is a link to the documentation on spfile - http://otn.oracle.com/docs/products/oracle9i/doc_library/release2/server.920/a96521/create.htm#1012672
    Hope this helps.

  • To change parameter file used for tnsping

    Hi
    I can ping the server.
I can connect to the server.
Just for fun I want to tnsping for connectivity to it. When I try, I see this:

    Used parameter files:

That is a bit strange. I'd go to the sqlnet.ora referenced (c:\10t_test\network ....) and set client trace level to 16, set client trace file to a specific value (no default) and set client trace directory to a specific value (no default). Repeat your tnsping, then dig into that trace file for clues. There will be a lot there that you don't understand, but I believe you will find clues as to why it's not looking at where you set tns_admin.
Still using the 10g path. Yes, I could place the tnsnames there, but I would really rather not!
    Thanks.

  • Oracle Parameter file

    Hi,
my Oracle DB is 10.2.0.5 version
    O.s. Linux Red Hat
I need to modify some parameter into parameter file:
    Some parameters are below:
    audit_sys_operations
    audit_trail
    compatible
    db_cache_size
    event
    java_pool_size
    job_queue_processes
    large_pool_size
    pga_aggregate_target
    processes
    session_cached_cursors
    sessions
    sga_max_size
    sga_target
into path $ORACLE_HOME/dbs I've these files:
    init.ora
    initdw.ora
    spfileorcl.ora
    pfileORCL.ora
    orapworcl
    spfileORCL.ora
Which step I have to perform to change these parameters?
    Thanks in advance!

first of all check whether you are using pfile or spfile.
    SHOW PARAMETER SPFILE;
If you get the output in the VALUE column then you can directly issue the below command to change the parameters:
    ALTER SYSTEM SET <PARAMETER_NAME>=<VALUE>;
You need to use the SCOPE clause depending on the nature of the parameters.
If you dont get the output in the VALUE column, then its better to create the spfile by using the command:
    CREATE SPFILE FROM PFILE;
Then you can use the above method.
And if you want to use the pfile only, then you have to change the parameters manually in that file.
Some parameter changes need the bouncing of the database, while some dont need.
