Lock Timed out exception in stateful Session Bean

Hi All,
We have a stateful session bean and put the reference of the bean in HttpSession
and retrieve it from other JSP.
While calling a method from bean, we are often getting the following exception.
Any help please?
weblogic.ejb.extensions.LockTimedOutException: Lock for primaryKey:1018581328443_46

Hi Arjuna,
Thanks for your suggestions. But can you also help me how to make the session
bean thread safe?
Thanks in Advance

Looks like you have two threads accessing the bean at the same time.
You
need to make it thread safe. Also, store the handle of the session bean
instead of the session bean itself in the session.
By the way, session beans (handle or otherwise) are not meant to be stored
in the HttpSession, and here is why:

  • Stateful session bean does not rollback TX

    I am unable to figure out why my stateful session bean is unable to rollback transactions
    when I throw an EJBException. My stateful session bean has an ejbCreate method
    which calls 2 other creates on 2 entity beans. If one of the entity beans successfully
    creates and the other throws a CreateException, i catch it and throw an EJBException.
    The created entity bean should roll back but it doesnt. Can it be because I
    am calling the beans from within the session bean's ejbCreate method?
    All beans are set to transaction REQUIRED, using bea's TXDatasource, and running
    WL 6.1 sp2 on windows 2000.
    help!

    Session bean create methods run in an unspecified transaction. So your two calls to the
    entity bean are running in separate txs.

  • Cannot remove stateful session bean when transaction timed out

    The transaction timeout is set to 5 minutes. After several operations on the transactional
    stateful session bean(implements SessionSynchronization), the transaction timed out
    after 5 minutes and I got the IllegalStateException when calling another business
    method. After the transaction rolled back, weblogic.ejb20.locks.LockTimedOutException
    was thrown when attempting to remove the bean. It seems the lock on the bean was
    not released even though the transaction had been rolled back. Does anyone know how
    to remove the bean in this kind of situation?

    If a stateful session throws a RuntimeException (your rollback) the container destroys the instance of the bean and all
    associated state information is lost, as required by the EJB specification.
    If you want to maintain client state it is generally best to use HttpSession objects (if you have a web application)
    for short-lived, client-specific data and JPA entities or other database backed storage for long-lived data.

  • Stateful session bean time out

    How to specify a stateful session beans's time out value?
    Thanks,
    Jack

    Bear in mind that setting a timeout for a stateful session bean will
    typically have no more effect than setting a maximum number of beans. As
    with garbage collection in Java, beans become eligible for passivation or
    removal when their timeout expires and there are more beans than the
    maximum, but they will only be removed or passivated when the server runs
    low on memory.

    The above error caused the server to use all available memory and required a reboot to proceed.
    Subsequent testing against the Sun Appliucation Server 7 on Windows 2000 dev environment using the Sun Studio IDE for debugging and trace statements inserted in the code indicate that the Application Server is removing the Stateful Session Beans when they time out without an ejbPassivate event and without serializing the beans to the data-store. cache-idle-timeout-in-seconds set to 180 and removal-timeout-in-seconds set to 1800.
    The server.log indicates that the beans are timing out:
    [19/Aug/2004:18:15:10] WARNING ( 1664): [NRU-com.telstra.nodeman.ejb.AddressMaintBean]: IdleBeanCleanerTask finished after removing 2 idle beans
    Trace statements inserted in ejbPassivate do not appear in the log.
    It is my understanding that the above timeout should have caused an ejbPasssivate and serialization of the beans.
    The beans have been validated using Sun Java Studio Enterprise 6 with 'EJB validate'.
    My reading of the problem is that the beans are not being serialized and the error occurs when the application attempts to reference (getHandle) the bean after timeout.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks Thorick.
    I am using NRU caching. WL 7.0 SP2.
    I have not defined idle-timeout-seconds in my weblogic-ejb-jar.xml. As I understand
    the default value for this is 600secs. So the ejbs should be removed after this

    The idle-timeout-seconds property controls the timeout/removal behavior.
    which stateful session cache type are you using ? LRUCache or NRUCache

  • Transaction inside a stateful session bean

    I've a stateful session bean that represents a shopping cart.
    It has the following checkout method():
    <pre>
    /* em.getTransaction().begin(); */
    reasons.clear();
    for(CartEntry ce : entries){
    // get the book reference for the cart entry
    Book relbook = books.findById(ce.getBook().getId());
    if( ce.getQuantity()> relbook.getQuantity() ){
    reasons.add("Item not availabel in this quantity");
    // TODO: need to rollback
    /*em.getTransaction().rollback();*/
    throw new Exception();
    } else{
    // update book quantities
    relbook.setQuantity( relbook.getQuantity() - ce.getQuantity() );
    /*em.getTransaction().commit();*/
    // end of conversational state
    cancel();
    </pre>
    This method checks for the quantity of the items with respect to the quantity in the cart entries.
    How can I perform a transaction here?
    I'd like to rollback it before throwing the exception. And I'd like to commit it at the end,.
    If I use the entity manager to get the transaction, I get this error:
    Exception Description: Cannot use an EntityTransaction while using JTA.

    Its sad to see someone using EJB technology and then completely throw all benefits of it out of the window. I highly advise you to look into Container Managed Transactions; learn what they help you to do and then apply it. When you know how, it will put a smile on your face as you'll see the transaction management stuff disappear before your eyes.
    , from the time by which I decrement the item quantity in the database to the commit, no other transaction is decrementing the quantity of the same item as well??? Am I protected against this???Concurrency is a hard problem with no clearly defined answers to it other than "you need to design the code to guard against concurrency problems". In this specific case, the database protects against this happening by applying a row lock or a table lock while the transaction is active and you are making modifications. For more information about that, you should consult the documentation relating to your specific DBMS.

  • Timout error when ADF Swing+BC deployed as Stateful Session Bean

    i deploy the AM as stateful session bean onto OC4J 10.1.3,and the Client access them by Java Web Start.

  • Accessing the same stateful session bean from multiple clients in a clustered environment

    I am trying to access the same stateful session bean from multiple
              clients. I also want this bean to have failover support so we want to
              deploy it in a cluster. The following description is how we have tried
              to solve this problem, but it does not seem to be working. Any
              insight would be greatly appreciated!
              I have set up a cluster of three servers. I deployed a stateful
              session bean with in memory replication across the cluster. A client
              obtains a reference to an instance of one of these beans to handle a
              request. Subsequent requests will have to use the same bean and could
              come from various clients. So after using the bean the first client
              stores the handle to the bean (actually the replica aware stub) to be
              used by other clients to be able to obtain the bean. When another
              client retrieves the handle gets the replica aware stub and makes a
              call to the bean the request seems to unpredictably go to any of the
              three servers rather than the primary server hosting that bean. If the
              call goes to the primary server everything seems to work fine the
              session data is available and it gets backed up on the secondary
              server. If it happens to go to the secondary server a bean that has
              the correct session data services the request but gives the error
              <Failed to update the secondary copy of a stateful session bean from
              home:ejb20-statefulSession-TraderHome>. Then any subsequent requests
              to the primary server will not reflect changes made on the secondary
              and vice versa. If the request happens to go to the third server that
              is not hosting an instance of that bean then the client receives an
              error that the bean was not available. From my understanding I thought
              the replica aware stub would know which server is the primary host for
              that bean and send the request there.
              Thanks in advance,
              Justin

              If 'allow-concurrent-call' does exactly what you need, then you don't have a problem,
              do you?
              Except of course if you switch ejb containers. Oh well.

  • Losing UserTransaction state in Stateful session bean

    I have a UserTransaction I wish to begin and commit in different methods of a Stateful session bean. I have 2 methods to test this on the session bean:
    public void beginTransaction()
    trans = context.getUserTransaction() ;
    trans.begin() ;
    public void commitTransaction()
    trans = context.getUserTransaction() ;
    trans.commit() ;
    If I call these methods from one Perform method in a Struts action all works fine. If I call the methods in different Struts actions (storing the session bean handle on the HTTPSession in the first for retrieval in the second) the second call fails with the following exception:
    java.lang.IllegalStateException: No active Transaction
    The state of the transaction on the second call is STATUS_NO_TRANSACTION. I am certain that I have lost no state on the session bean and that using handles gives me the correct bean since I have written some state to test this. Basically something seems to close the transaction between the end of the first Perform method and the beginning of the second (I am of course assuming this is a valid thing to do).
    My session bean descriptor has <transaction-type>Bean</transaction-type>, and I am using OC4J.
    If anyone can point out what it is I am doing wrong I would be grateful!
    James.

    Sorry, I have re-checked my code and I believe I found the problem.
    I was beginning my transaction inside ejbCreate() and trying to commit/rollback in another method. This works in JBoss 3.2 but does not work in either OC4J or WebLogic 7.
    If I begin my transaction in a business method and commit/rollback in another method, everything works fine. (It also seems to work fine in 9.0.3 this way).
    So I am not sure whether this is a bug in 9iAS/WLS, or a bug in JBoss, or something that is left "vague" in the J2EE spec. Unfortunately, examples on bean-managed transactions are thin on the ground generally (the usual advice being not to use them, which I definitely agree with!).
    If you believe that the behaviour I describe is a bug in 9iAS, I can send a simple EJB test case.

  • Initialize a stateful session bean from another

    Hi,
    I am trying to create and initialize a stateful session bean from another stateful session bean. The code is as follows
    This method belongs to DefaultSessionBean where it creates the AdminSessionBean based on few checks and returns it to the client.
        public AdminSession getAdminSession() throws UnknownException, WarningException {
            checkSessionUser("getAdminSession");

            } else {
                throw new WarningException (new CatalogHelper("ITOOLS_000042", sessionUser.getUserhandle()));
        }Another method in DefaultSessionBean, creates its local interface and returns it.
        public DefaultSessionLocal getDefaultSessionLocal() {
            DefaultSessionLocal dsl = (DefaultSessionLocal)context.getBusinessObject(DefaultSessionLocal.class);
            System.out.println("local created.");
            return dsl;
        }Client call initialize method of the AdminSessionBean which is mentioned below:
        public void initialize(DefaultSession ds) throws WarningException, UnknownException {
            this.ds = ds.getDefaultSessionLocal();
            this.rfl = ReadFieldList.getInstance();
            this.fm = new FinderMethods();
        }The client code where it gets the adminSession and initializes is
       public static AdminSession getAdminSession(DefaultSession ds) throws ViewException {
            AdminSession as;
            try {
                as = ds.getAdminSession();

            // Initialize Admin Session
            try {

                as.initialize(ds);
                System.out.println("adminsession is initialized");

    Your remote client passes a DefaultSession to AdminSession.initialize(..). This DefaultSession has to be a remote type. In your client, how does it get DefaultSession?
    Did your client look up DefaultSession, and have it return a (sessionContext.getBusinessObject(DefaultSession.class))? If so, it should work.

  • Stateful Session Bean accesed by two JSPs.

    Hi there,
    We are having quite an issue; we have an application that stores session
    state in an stateful session bean. And we have noticed some parts of the
    application create a situation where is possible that two frames -and so two
    jsp- access the session bean at the same time. And, of course, it´s going to
    be the same instance of the session bean..... what will be the behaviour in
    this case?. Will the requests be serialized, an exception will be thrown or
    the EJB will be destroyed?. Not very sure of what would happen. I suppose
    there could be some problems with this-. I would appreciate any help.
    Many thanks. Best regards.

    Hrm. EJB spec is quite clear on what will happen (RemoteException thrown) if
    the second client attempts to use Stateful Session bean which is already in
    use (and the bean will not be destroyed - container will simply throw an
    exception after failing to acquire a lock on the bean instance without waiting
    (allow-concurrent-calls option in WebLogic allows client call to wait to acquire
    lock - this was probably added as a convinience feature for applications which
    use frames)).
    So, normally your application has to ensure that no 2 clients are able to use
    the same stateful session bean concurrently, or use allow-concurrent-calls option,
    which will do that for you, but the application will become non portable.

    Hi Dimitri,
    Thnaks a lot for the help:one thing that I do not know if it´s an issue is
    that calls come from different JSPs; the strategy I have seen in another Web
    application servers is trying to activate the EJB in the middle of another
    transaction... In this situation, the container cannot activate the EJB,
    roolback the transaction and destroys the EJB.... Would Weblogic feature
    avoid this?. I will investigate on my part....
    Many many thnaks. Nice cats.

    In 6.1 you can set allow-concurrent-calls to true in this situation:
    <!--
    The allow-concurrent-calls specifies whether a stateful session bean
    instance will allow concurrent method calls. The value of this
    element may be either "True" or "False". The default value is
    "False". When a stateful session bean instance is currently in a
    method call and another (concurrent) method call arrives on the
    server, the EJB specification requires that the server throw a
    RemoteException. By default, allow-concurrent-calls is false, and the
    EJB container will follow the EJB specification. When this value is
    set to true, the EJB container will block the concurrent method call
    and allow it to proceed when the previous call has completed.
    Used in: stateful-session-descriptor

  • Stateful session bean destroying instance variables?

    I'm trying to use a stateful session bean as some kind of login controller and to maintain the login id and access level across JSPs and HTMLs so that once logged in, all the JSPs can obtain the login name of the current user (String) and his access level (int).
    I use the login.jsp to login and it successfully reports logging in with the correct access level retrieved from database. However, if I go to another JSP (testlogin.jsp), these 2 EJB instance variables are always destroyed and set to null and 0 when I access them again.
    What am I missing that my stateful session bean is not saving these instance variables? Do I need to put them in some serializable value objects (create a help VO class?)
    I suspected that on different JSP, I call the MemberControllerHome.create() method, it creates a new instance or something but if I don't use the create method how do I get a handle to MemberController at all?
    MemberControllerBean.java
    public class MemberControllerBean implements SessionBean {
         //initialize in ejbCreate.
         private MemberHome memberHome;
         SessionContext context;
         //Member currentLogin;
         //Current Login
         private String loginID;
         private int accessLevel;
         // Constructor
         public MemberControllerBean() {}
    ...some code in between...
    public void login(String id, String password){
              try{
                   Member member = null;
                   member = memberHome.findByPrimaryKey(id);
                   if(member.getMPassword().equals(password)){
                        this.loginID = member.getMID();
                        this.accessLevel = member.getMAccessLevel();
                   else{
                        throw new EJBException("Login failed. Invalid member ID and/or password.");
              } catch (FinderException ex) {
                   throw new EJBException("Login failed. Invalid member ID and/or password.");
         public void logout(){
              this.loginID = null;
              this.accessLevel = 4;
         public String getLoginID(){
              return this.loginID;
         public int getLoginAccessLevel(){
              return this.accessLevel;
    login.jsp
    String mID = request.getParameter("mID");
    String mPassword = request.getParameter("mPassword");
    out.println("20:" + mID + ":" + mPassword);
    if(mID != null && mPassword != null){
         out.println("22:" + mID + ":" + mPassword);
         try{
              InitialContext ic = new InitialContext();
              MemberControllerHome home = (MemberControllerHome) ic.lookup("java:comp/env/ejb/MemberController");
              MemberController mc = home.create();
              out.println("26:Logging in as " + mID + " with " + mPassword);
              mc.login(mID, mPassword);
              out.println("28:" + mc.getLoginID() + "logged in successfully at level " +
                   mc.getLoginAccessLevel() + ".");
         } catch (NamingException ex) {
              out.println("java:comp/env/ejb/MemberController not found.");
         } catch (EJBException ex) {
              out.println(ex.getMessage());
         } catch (Exception ex) {
              out.println(ex.getMessage());
    testlogin.jsp
    <%
    try{
         InitialContext ic = new InitialContext();
         MemberControllerHome home = (MemberControllerHome) ic.lookup("java:comp/env/ejb/MemberController");
         MemberController mc = home.create();
         out.println("You are logged in as <b>" + mc.getLoginID() +
              "</b> at level <b>" + mc.getLoginAccessLevel() + "</b>.");
    } catch (NamingException ex) {
         out.println("java:comp/env/ejb/MemberController not found.");
    } catch (EJBException ex) {
         out.println(ex.getMessage());
    } catch (Exception ex) {
         out.println(ex.getMessage());
    %>

    The key to the problem is that in testlogin.jsp a new stateful session bean is created. The new bean instance of course doesn't know the log-in information you stored in the old session bean. That is why the method returns null and 0 when called.
    There are couple of ways to solve the issue. The easiest solution is to store the bean instance created in Login.jsp in the jsp's implicit HttpSession object. Because login.jsp and testlogin.jsp share the same session, the bean instance can be easily stored and retrieved.
    Here is the code you need to have:
    1. in login.jsp
    session.setAttribute("MemberControllerBeanInstance", mc);
    2. in testlogin.jsp
    MemberController mc =
    (MemberController) session.getAttribute("MemberControllerBeanInstance");
    Hope it helps.

  • Error in updating secondary stateful session bean

              Hi all,
              I have set up a cluster of 2 managed servers with WebLogic 6.1. I have a
              stateful session bean and several stateless session beans. the stateful
              session bean keeps user info and limited cached objects, all are
              serializable. it seems working fine, even after killing any one of the
              servers, as long as one is alive. a java application client creates a
              stateful session bean first, then calls stateless session beans with the
              remote interface of the stateful bean as a method parameter. No problem
              when stateful session bean is created. However, each stateless bean method
              generates the following error message if I turn the debug on (level 64). No
              exception stack traces, and all methods execute successfully.
              <Error> <EJB> <Failed to update the secondary copy of a stateful session
              bean from home:clientsession>
              I wonder what causes the error, and why it tries to update the stateful
              session bean. in all stateless session beans, only read into the stateful
              bean.
              Thank you,
              Fujin

    This has been fixed in WLS 6.1 SP2.

  • SAME EJB 3.0 Stateful Session bean for different JSP sessions returned

    Forum,
    I have a strange problem utilizing stateful session beans. Please note, that I am using jdeveloper for the following:
    1) Here is a basic stateful session bean:
    @Stateful(name = "DemoClass")
    public class DemoClassBean implements DemoClass,
               DemoClassLocal, SessionSynchronization {
          public static int id=0;
          public DemoClassBean() {
          id++;
          public int getId() {
             return id;
          //... other methods
    }2) This bean is accessed from a JSP for testing purpose, I am copying only the script used in JSP:
    <%
       DemoClass bean = null;
       try {
          bean = (DemoClass) ((new javax.naming.InitialContext()).
                       lookup("DemoClass "));
          System.out.println("ID=" + bean.getId() );
          } catch (javax.naming.NamingException e) {
             // TODO
    %>If this page is addressed by different clients, from different browsers, the same bean is returned.
    Here is what I see in the logs:
    ID=1
    ID=1
    ID=1
    The same problem is being observed when this session bean is accessed from a JSF Backing bean.
    What could be wrong? Is this a bug in oc4j / jdeveloper (version 10.1.3.3.0)?

    Hi,
    The code for stateful is perfectly fine and working in a normal way. The way you are trying to implement the stateful session bean in your application is wrong.
    think of binding the stateful session bean with HttpSession object.
    So that you will get a unique stateful session bean object.
