Locking Vignette to Motion Track in FCP, Can it be done?

Hello All,
I have been watching a tutorial about Apple's Color and there was one section that
used a motion track and connected a vignette to that track. I thought it was neat and
convenient, so the question is, can that be done in Final Cut or the second choice would
be Motion?
The process was elegant in Color but that puts the effect late in post, at out put stage. I know
something similar can be accomplished with key frames. The idea that a motion track can
control an effect is intriguing.
Thank you, Tom

FCP does not have motion tracking. You can send the clip to Motion and Motion track the effect there.

  • Reverse Motion tracking

I'm working on a project with some green screened footage and some of it was shot hand held but i want it to be still. I was wondering if it's possible to do a sort of reverse motion track, where i can analyze the motion and the make it stationary.
Does anyone know if this is possible in Motion 4?
    Much thanks.

That's just stabilization. It's in the manual look for STABILIZE WORKFLOW.
Keying stabilized footage can get weird because of the sometimes quite dramatic changes in position and rotation that take place during the output/rendering of the stabilized clip.

  • Is there a way to motion track a point in a shape layer?

    Hi all,
Is there a way to motion track a point in a shape layer?
    Thanks

As Mylenium points out, you can't to it directly.  But if you're willing to jump through a hoop, you can: Precomp that shape layer!
Now AE will see it as another piece of footage, which can be motion tracked.  You can use Mocha or AE built-in motion tracker, depending on the nature of your precomp.
Alternately, you can simply parent a null object to the shape layer.  After you do so, you can adjust the null's position, positioning it precisely where you want it to be in relationship to the shape layer.  It will then maintain that relative position, following right along with any animation applied to the shape layer.

  • Can any Motion plug-in (or FCP plug-in) do motion tracking?

I've got a project I'm working on that involves shooting model spaceships in front of a greenscreen, then compositing into a shot. I'd LIKE to animate the engine glow without having to keyframe every frame, and I'm trying to avoid buying Adobe After Effects.
Is there a Motion or Final Cut Pro plug-in that can do motion tracking, or should I bite the bullet and just get After Effects?
    Mac G5 1.8   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   FCP 5, Motion 2

Well, you could try iStabilize: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/istabilize.html
I also believe that Boris has an image stabilizer, but I don't know that either Boris or iStabilize have the ability to generate the tracking points...
I have used image stabilization to comp shots before - I stabilized a cropped down version of the shot, comp'd my bit into it, then stabilized the corner of the crop (which was jumping around because the image within it was stable), which put the movement back in the shot, then layed that over an original copy of the clip. A lot of monkey motion, to be sure.
I believe iStabilize has a free trial download...

  • Is there a good motion tracking plug-in for FCP-X?

The question is in the headline:  Is there a good motion tracking plug-in for FCP-X?
You know, like when I want to blur out, say, a license plate number on a moving car.
I know of no plug-ins for FCP-X that will do this.  Surely there's one out there.
And since you can't just export a sequence to Motion (like you could in FCP 7), how would one achieve this in FCP-X?

    R&B wrote:
… And since you can't just export a sequence to Motion …
instead of selecting a clip or sequence in FCPX, you set the in/out points in the Export/Send it to Compressor dialog.
the exported mov can be tracked in Motion5 …-
    aaaand finally re-imported into FCPX.
… not exactly as convenient as in the old FC/p , but the tracker in M5 offers, imho as a hobbyist, superb results.-

  • On garageband 10.0.1 i locked the tracks, bur now can't open them . what to do?

On garageband  10.0.1 i locked the tracks on a project and now can't unlcok them. What to do?

Does the track lock show in the Track heads? If not, use the Track manu to show the Track locks. in the Track header
Tracks > Track header > Show track locks.
When the locks are showing in te Track headers, press them to disable them.

  • Can't select 'motion source' in AE CC while attempting to do motion tracking.

    Hey all,
I'm new to AE, and am trying to do some motion tracking following this tutorial: https://library.creativecow.net/articles/devis_andrew/AE-Basics-53-Motion-Tracking-1/video -tutorial  I linked in a clip (GoPro 4k as .mp4) from PP, created a Null layer and opened up the tracking panel, but the selection for my video file "GOPRO###" and "Null 1" are grayed out.  I double clicked on the GOPRO### files in the timeline, which I'm assuming opened it in a new comp. From here I was able to complete the tracking, but then I have no clue on how to link this new comp back into premiere.
If anyone can tell my why all my motion source choices are grayed out, I would appreciate it.
Also, how would I add a .PNG file as the object that is following the tracking?  Do I just add the .PNG as a layer, and set it's parent to the Null 1 layer?
    Thanks!

When you double-clicked on the layer in the comp, you opened a LAYER window.  That's the only window where tracking can take place.  Once you have a good track, you APPLY it to a layer in the comp.
If I were you, I'd go over that tutorial a couple-three more times.  Andrew spells things out pretty clearly in his tutorials.

  • I have FCP 5  Is there a Motion app that I can use with this version?

I have FCP 5. Is Motion available for this FCP version?
If so, where would I find it?
    tia

Motion 2.0 was paired with FCP 5. Final Cut Studio 1 included both. When Apple switched to Intel processors, they released FCP 5.1 and Motion 2.1 as an Intel compatible "cross grade". FCS2 had FCP 6 and Motion 3. FCS3 is Motion 4 and FCP 7.

  • Help with Motion Tracking and Masking?

Hi. First and probably only post here. I've got a bit of an issue....
I'm trying to create "snapshots" in my video that are created from masks which are then motion tracked and remain stationary. Here's a video of what i'm talking about... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OhVAduuJc8
The problem I'm running into is that after i motion track the layer, select a null object as the target, duplicate the video layer, mask the object, freeze frame, and pair it to a null layer, the object does not remain stationary as the ones in the video do. Instead it moves WITH the null object and I cant figure out why. I've gotten a tutorial from the guy who made the video, however it's private so i don't know if you guys will be able to see it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zY0QLrMCcGM
Either way, i followed the tutorial exactly and still to no avail. Are my settings messed up or what exactly is going on? Ive successfully done this project before but now that i'm using CS5, i'm running into these issues. If anyone has any advice i'd gladly try it out and return with the results.
Thanks so much for trying to help me out.

Yeah the null is still moving. Will freezing it lock the mask into place while still allowing the footage to play through? And how would i go about "freezing the null"?
I just dont understand how this person does it in the tutorial, and the mask remains in place. I know you probably can't watch the tutorial cause the user has it set as private, but as far i know his mask stays in place, but uses the null (while still moving) as a tracking device to keep the mask from floating out of control as the camera moves through the shot.
Sorry if I'm making this rather confusing. It's difficult to explain.
Maybe it might be easier to explain how you would obtain the result from the video I've posted? Keep in mind I dont have CameraTracker.

  • Motion Tracking a Dolly Shot

I'm having a little trouble figuring this out. Thought someone on here might have done something similar.
The shot: A person walks down a sidewalk. The camera dollies parallel to them so it sees a wide of their profile. The person disappears and reappears in the shot as the camera dollies.
Is there a good way to pull off a poor man's motion tracking effect like this? Certain plug-ins to use to get it right?
A somewhat similar effect occurs a few (brief) times in this video: http://vimeo.com/24569304
Happy to clarify if that doesn't make sense. Thanks in advance!

Here's what I'd do. I'd shoot a clean take of the actor with a dolly shot with the dolly on track if possible and the camera locked off. Have an assistant keep track of the time.
Once you have a clean take, roll back and take another shot.
If you don't have a dolly and track then do the best you can to keep the shot as close as you can to the "good" take.
Now you need to track both shots in Mocha. There a re tutorials on how to track a moving shot available. You would stabilize both shots, lay the clean plate over the plate with the actor and crop it with a soft edge mask big enough to cover the actor. Did you get that? You want to lay the clean plate over just the area where the actor is. Make any adjustments necessary to the timing of the shot to keep things lined up by using time remap on the clean plate.
once you have the composited shots looking like there's no actor in the shot , then you can use transitions, fades, or other effects to bring in your actor by eliminating the top clean portion.
Once this is all set up, remove the stabilization on the actor plate making sure that the clean plate is tied to it by parenting.
Don't expect to be able to hold this hide the actor effect for more than a few seconds without dolly track. If you carefully watch the reference  video you'll see that there's not a lot of exact frame matching going on. There just kitschy transitions between takes. The first one is especially awkward and there's a big jump that's hidden fairly well by the transition. In fact, I can't see anything except the distortions of the sidewalk and the overlays that probably used motion tracking.

  • Motion Tracking - Match Move, getting messy edges around superimposed video

    (Motion 3.0.2)
I'm using the "Match Motion" menu option under "Motion Tracking" - "Add Behavior" to superimpose a video over a flat screen in the shot. This is working great except for one issue. Around the edges of the super imposed video there is a flickering light that persists. NOTE: The flat screen does display a basic white graphic on it and initially it seemed as though this was leaking through. However, I'm not convinced this is the case as I've stretched the four corners well beyond the underlying white screen and the problem persists.
Pretty sure I went through the proper steps, i.e analyze etc. and the superimposed video does play fine, just the edges are not very clean.
    Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks, I did set the "Render" to "Best", hit Analyze again, saved the file, went back to my FCP project which contained the file/clip, had to render again.....but got the same results, might be a touch improved, can't really tell. Maybe I'll start over and just cover the entire flat screen tv w/ the video to ensure that none of the white image from the tv seeps around the edges??

  • Motion Tracking: Analyzes only first 6 frames

    Hi,
I using the FCP "Send to Motion project" command on 2 clips (1 HDV video+1 still. I tried with various material and various FCP sequences and I always end up having a weird problem and maybe someone here can tell me what I’m doing wrong. I set the in and out at the beginning and end of the clip in the Motion timeline (actually, they are set as such by default). I apply the Motion tracking behavior to the still. When I click “analyze” in the Motion tracking Hud, it analyzes the first 6 frames and then stops as if the task was complete. I tried starting from the end instead, it did the same, analyzed the last 6 frames only. In FCP, the still's duration is the same as the clip underneath, same thing in Motion 3.
Any idea what I’m doing wrong?
    Thanks

It may not be complete - Motion may have lost the tracking point - perhaps it moved too far between frames.

  • White screen Motion projects in FCP

I have created a Motion Project on my father in-laws Powerbook, my old machine, and used it in a FCP project everything was fine and as it should be.
Saved the files, and brought everything to my new machine.
On this new machine it has the crossgrade version of FCP,(5.1.4) and Motion (2.1.2) on it, and when I bring the Motion file into FCP I get a white screen. Nothing else. Just 10 seconds of white. The project plays fine in Motion. I have tried to resave and re-import. Nothing. Plays perfectly fine in Motion.
I made a new project in Motion, assuming it had to do with the old files. Imported it into FCP, white screen for 10 seconds! This is a huge issue, but not sure what to do if I can't import my Motion projects into FCP.
Now this is something to considerI will throw this into the mix.......the Motion Projects do open up in my DVDSP 4.1.2.
So it opens in Motion, opens in DVDSP, but not in FCP. So its the import into FCP, not the file itself.
    What gives? Any clues......
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

OK, so I've been importing motion projects into FCP (for a while now) and rendering them each time they're changed...and finally wondered: why? If I click "open in editor", change something and go back to FCP, I should only have to re-connect it, right?
Unfortunately for us, whenever the source media - a video clip, still image, Motion or LiveType project file - changes, FCP trashes the associated render files. As far as I am aware, it's a hardwired 'housekeeping' thing within FCP.
The usual advice is to render only as a last resort, but I take it your workflow doesn't allow for that?
I busted open the FCP manual and it only said that LiveType and Motion clips must be rendered (red render bar)...but not why. Is it because they are inherently motion effects/graphics intensive?
It's because Motion or LiveType files typically do not match the codec - what FCP terms 'Compressor' in your Sequence Settings - that you're working in. Sure, the files may match the frame size and rate - for instance, 720x480 at 29.97 fps - but Motion and LiveType files are 'interpreted' as Animation codec files. If you're working in DV, for instance, you'll have to render files that are not DV. Another issue is that no machine/setup I've ever worked on can do Animation files - at Full Quality - without rendering (they are simply too data intensive). However, beefier machines can get some amount of RT playback, depending on the settings and number of tracks being composited.
Or did I misread your questions?

If I click "open in editor", change something and go back to FCP, I should only have to re-connect it, right? That's what I do in DVDSP if I need to change something on a menu I did with After Effects...export it from AE with same file name, then the file in DVDSP automatically updates (sometimes I gotta re-connect the file...).

I know the answer is probably just that simple, I'm just looking for some re-assurance that I'm understanding this correctly...
I'm not a noob...just trying to understand the tech side of things. That way I can be happier with my software.

  • Possible to do the 3d motion tracking text in video with only adobe products?

I am very interested in doing some 3d text in some video with motion tracking, such as you see in the opening shots in the show Fringe.
You will have a scene of maybe a street in the city, the camera is looking forward and moving, you have 3d block text that seems to be just hovering there up off the ground but looks like a real physical 3d object in the shot as the camera moves around.
I have been looking up tutorials for this in After effects on youtube but they always use other non adobe products as well such as boujou or 3ds max,  I am wondering if it is possible to make the same shot with only adobe products. If so, what whould I use other than after effects.  And lastly, can anyone point me to a good free tutorial using only adobe programs if there is one out there?
I have seen one video of someone adding text to a moving video but it was flat or plastered onto a wall and not the nice block letters that look like a sculpture in the video.
    Thanks.

I am wondering if it is possible to make the same shot with only adobe products.
No, you can't and that settles all your other questions. For tutorials, refer to VideoCoPilot's matchmoving and set extension stuff, but even then you will need to at least use some comemrcial third-party plug-ins.
