Log Switch during RMAN backup

I have seen in many RMAN backup scripts that a manual log switching is performed in first line of the script? What is it purpose, just to write changes needed to reconstruct the DML/DDL statements to online redo logfiles and start the archiving process if db is running in archive log mode?

  • Intermittent OCFS2 Heartbeat Errors During RMAN Backup

    Hello all. If this is better suited to an OCFS2 list, please let me know.
    I have an Oracle 10g RAC (10.2.0.2), on which one node runs an RMAN backup nightly around 10:45 PM. The node is running on RHEL4 x64 with 8 GB of RAM.
    About every other night these errors turn up in the messages log in the server:
    Apr 19 23:48:23 servername kernel: (4059,2):o2hb_setup_one_bio:371 ERROR: Could not alloc slots BIO!
    Apr 19 23:48:23 servername kernel: (4059,2):o2hb_read_slots:507 ERROR: status = -12
    Apr 19 23:48:23 servername kernel: (4059,2):o2hb_do_disk_heartbeat:973 ERROR: status = -12
    This only seems to happen when the RMAN backup is in progress, and I get these at no other time of the day.
    Can anyone point me to a reference for what these error codes mean, and if you've encountered these before can you tell me what impact this has and how it can be resolved? I'm assuming that the read/write load on the block device for the OCFS2 mount is causing issues, but this all conjecture without an explanation of the error code.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

    Thanks for the response!
    Kernel is: 2.6.9-34.0.2.ELsmp
    ocfs2 is: ocfs2-2.6.9-34.0.2.ELsmp-1.2.4-2
    To my knowledge it's never lead to a fence, and these are the only ocfs2 messages logged in the system log. When these messages occur, there doesn't seem to be any other symptom and the backup completes.
    To be honest, we've never had issues with ocfs2 since we set this RAC node up, so I'm sad to say I don't even know what messages a fencing event would create.

  • Error "ARC0: Unable to archive..." during rman backup

    Hello DBA's!
    Problem:
    When ever I make an archivelog backup with rman it generates the following entry into the alertlog:
    Wed Jun 20 21:00:26 2007
    ARCH: Evaluating archive thread 1 sequence 9013
    Wed Jun 20 21:00:26 2007
    ARC0: Evaluating archive thread 1 sequence 9013
    ARC0: Unable to archive thread 1 sequence 9013
    Log actively being archived by another process
    I use the following RMAN-Script:
    "backup device type disk tag 'BACKUP_AL1' archivelog all not backed up 1 times;"
    The comical thing is when a usual archivlog switch happens it all works fine with no errors or problems.
    The backup also runs with no errors and after searching I found the following entry in Metalink:260040.1, it can't help me because the usual archivelog switch is working fine.
    The environment which I use is an Oracle 10.1.0.4 Database in a Cluster Environment on Windows Server.
    Maybe here is anyone with an idea?

    Thanks for the fast answer.
    I read the metalink entry "Multiple archiver processes FAQ" Note:73163.1 and now I understand why this comment comes.
    The parameter in the database "log_archive_max_processes" is set to 2 (means multiple archive processes).
    I will change paramater back to 1 because the database will handle it by itself if it need more then 1 process.

    This file can simply be deleted.  It is an archived log file.  The only reason you would needthis file is if you're trying to diagnose a problem with SyslogCollector.

    I found almost related MOS note but unfortunately, I am still unable to understand what actually happened or what is trying to be explain in this particular note. RMAN Backup fails with error ORA-3114 [ID 1264084.1]. One more important question for my concern is that if the command failed for example as in my case. The next time when backup command started to take incremental backups, will it cover or backup those archivelog which were not backed up because of the above error?

    Best Regards.

    A "BACKUP ARCHIVELOG" is not an "Incremental Backup" (ergo, the question of "differential" or "cumulative" doesn't arise).
    It is a Backup of the ArchiveLogs specified in archlogspecifier . Since you have specified "ALL" it will attempt to backup all known archivelogs that have not been deleted. The "DELETE ALL INPUT" will delete the files after they have been successfully backed up. If the backup fails, the DELETE is not executed. Therefore, at the next execution, the same (and newer) ArchiveLogs will get backed up.
    Why don't you maintain a log of the RMAN Backup run (either with "SPOOL LOG TO .." in the RMAN script or by redirecting STDOUT and STDERR to a custom log file).

  • Problem in recovery from RMAN backup in case of disk failure

    Hi
    I have Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 on Windows. Full Hot RMAN backup of database is scheduled on daily basis. I am taking backup on disks. And then i do manually copy them on tapes. If any disk failure occurs than can i recover database completely in this scenario. If tried restoing that backup on different machine as given below
    set ORACLE_SID=<name>
    rman target sys/<pwd>@ORACLE_SID nocatalog
    startup nomount
    restore spfile
    create pfile from spfile
    startup nomount pfile
    alter database mount
    restore database
    Everything worked fine till above steps. Now i will execute last step.
    recover database
    Here it gives error:-RMAN-06054: media recovery requesting unknown log: thread 1 scn 264750
    Still i typed
    alter database open resetlogs
    Now i can open my database, But is it recovered completely? Or there is loss of some data? Why it is giving this error?
    Thanks in advance. Waiting for reply.

    I can understand the confusion with this whole concept.
    What I meant by all archivelogs is all the archivelogs that were backed up with the backup itself. Again, it is essential to ensure that you archive the current redo log AFTER the backup is performed and then back those archivelogs too. Good thing is, RMAN will take care of this for you if you backup the archivelogs with the BACKUP DATABASE command and/or backup the archivelogs AFTER you run the BACKUP DATABASE command.
    Once you've mounted the controlfile and CATALOG the archivelogs, you can go into SQL*Plus and issue the following query:
    select SEQUENCE#, FIRST_CHANGE#, NEXT_CHANGE# from v$archived_log
    order by FIRST_TIME;This will tell you what archivelog is the latest. Logs generated during the backup may also provide the necessary information. Performing Disaster Recovery should help to understand the full process.
    The ONLINELOG directory in FRA is only populated if you've configured your redo logs to be stored there. However, you are on 9i...right? If so 9i doesn't utilize a FRA.

  • RMAN Backup Restore from tape

    Hello Gurus
    We have lvl0 RMAN database backup restored from tape but due to some reasons we could not apply recovery on it. On checking the information in controlfile, it identified only the system file and no other file. So, we recreated the controlfile and decided to recover using backup controlfile option (until cancel or until change or until time). However, to my surprise, when I listed the checkpointchange# and checkpoint_time columns of v$datafile_header, I found the difference in timestamps ranging 24 hrs -- which menat we had to apply 24 hrs of archiving to bring all dbfs to a consistent state (before it allowed us to open the db) -- so far so good, it worked that way.
    My question is that, while I trigger a lvl0 RMAN backup at say 4PM on 27th July and it finishes on 4PM on 28th July (as I am directly pushing around 1 TB data to tapes) -- what is the consistency timestamp of this backup. In other words, is this backup available for a restore of 4PM 27th July? Or is it available only for a restore of 4PM 28th July and later ...?
    Isn't it that RMAN works at block level and when I fire a backup it should give me all the dbf's of that timestamp..?
    Appreciate your inputs/comments.

    When taking a online backup with RMAN, the datafiles backup is always inconsistent because it needs the archived redo logs generated during the backup to be consistent: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/intro005.htm#sthref70.
    A full online backup can only be used to restore the database to a point in time starting after backup end: if a backup starts at 4PM on 27th July and it finishes on 4PM on 28th July you can use it to restore the database to a point in time after 28-JUL 4PM.

    Hello looks like when backing up database using RMAN it did not find the archivelogs hence you got the errors. Try doing "Crosscheck archivelog all" and see.

    << Symptoms >>
    Archivelog backup using RMAN failed with error :
    RMAN-03002: failure of backup command at 08/18/2005 14:51:16
    RMAN-06059: expected archived log not found, lost of archived log compromises recoverability

    Additional information: 3
    <<Cause>>
    RMAN get the information about what archivelog files are required to back up from the v$archived_log view.
    RMAN cannot find the file archivelog in the archivelog destination. So itscannot continue taking the backup because this file does not exist.
    <<Solution>>
    Check if the archivelog exist in the log archive destination. If the is moved to some other location then restore the file back to its original location and then do RMAN back.
    else
    RMAN> crosscheck archivelog all;
    After the crosscheck all take the rman backup.

  • Implications of losing ArchivedLogs and RMAN Backup directory.

    DB version:10gR2
    We have a test database which is important since it is a pre-production DB used by the application team for their final testing .
    Currently this DB is not in Archivelog mode. Every night a cronjob runs to create the expdp datapump dump of the schemas in this DB.
    We want to test online RMAN backups in this DB. So we are going to put this db in ARCHIVELOG mode for a week.
    The RMAN backup pieces will be stored in +/u03/data1/orabkp+ and the Archived logs will be stored in +/u04/ach_logs+ directory.
    We want to know the impact of /u04/ach_logs , the archived logs directory getting accidently deleted. I know that the accidental deletion of RMAN backup directory shouldn't impact the normal running of the database. But we want to know the if the accidental deletion of Archived redo logs directory will impact the DB.
    Edited by: user10633418 on Sep 25, 2009 2:53 AM

    NO, it will not impact in the database. If you delete any archive log files database will run normally. But you won't restore your database in point in time. For recovery you need your full backup of all datafiles + archivelogs + online redo log files.
    For a backup policy of any production database where you don't want to lose any transaction you must reserve your archive logs files by rman backup.

  • Log file sync  during RMAN archive backup

    Hi,
    I have a small question. I hope someone can answer it.
    Our database(cluster) needs to have a response within 0.5 seconds. Most of the time it works, except when the RMAN backup is running.
    During the week we run one time a full backup, every weekday one incremental backup, every hour a controlfile backup and every 15 minutes an archival backup.
    During a backup reponse time can be much longer then this 0.5 seconds.
    Below an typical example of responsetime.
    EVENT: log file sync
    WAIT_CLASS: Commit
    TIME_WAITED: 10,774
    It is obvious that it takes very long to get a commit. This is in seconds. As you can see this is long. It is clearly related to the RMAN backup since this kind of responsetime comes up when the backup is running.
    I would like to ask why response times are so high, even if I only backup the archivelog files? We didn't have this problem before but suddenly since 2 weeks we have this problem and I can't find the problem.
    - We use a 11.2G RAC database on ASM. Redo logs and database files are on the same disks.
    - Autobackup of controlfile is off.
    - Dataguard: LogXptMode = 'arch'
    Greetings,

    Hi,
    Thank you. I am new here and so I was wondering how I can put things into the right category. It is very obvious I am in the wrong one so I thank the people who are still responding.
    -Actually the example that I gave is one of the many hundreds a day. The respone times during the archive backup is most of the time between 2 and 11 seconds. When we backup the controlfile with it, it is for sure that these will be the response times.
    -The autobackup of the controfile is put off since we already have also a backup of the controlfile every hour. As we have a backup of archivefiles every 15 minutes it is not necessary to also backup the controlfile every 15 minutes, specially if that even causes more delay. Controlfile is a lifeline but if you have properly backupped your archivefiles, a full restore with max 15 minutes of data loss is still possible. We put autobackup off since it is severely in the way of performance at the moment.
    As already mentioned for specific applications the DB has to respond in 0,5 seconds. When it doesn’t happen then an entry will be written in a table used by that application. So I can compare the time of failure with the time of something happening. The times from the archivelog backup and the failure match in 95% of the cases. It also show that log file sync at that moment is also part of this performance issue. I actually built a script that I used for myself to determine out of the application what the cause is of the problem;
    select ASH.INST_ID INST,
    ASH.EVENT EVENT,
    ASH.P2TEXT,
    ASH.WAIT_CLASS,
    DE.OWNER OWNER,
    DE.OBJECT_NAME OBJECT_NAME,
    DE.OBJECT_TYPE OBJECT_TYPE,
    ASH.TIJD,
    ASH.TIME_WAITED TIME_WAITED
    from (SELECT INST_ID,
    EVENT,
    CURRENT_OBJ#,
    ROUND(TIME_WAITED / 1000000,3) TIME_WAITED,
    TO_CHAR(SAMPLE_TIME, 'DD-MON-YYYY HH24:MI:SS') TIJD,
    WAIT_CLASS,
    P2TEXT
    FROM gv$active_session_history
    WHERE PROGRAM IN ('yyyyy', 'xxxxx')) ASH,
    (SELECT OWNER, OBJECT_NAME, OBJECT_TYPE, OBJECT_ID FROM DBA_OBJECTS) DE
    WHERE DE.OBJECT_id = ASH.CURRENT_OBJ#
    AND ASH.TIME_WAITED > 2
    ORDER BY 8,6
    - Our logfiles are 250M and we have 8 groups of 2 members.
    - Large pool is not set since we use memory_max_target and memory_target . I know that Oracle maybe doesn’t use memory well with this parameter so it is truly a thing that I should look into.
    - I looked for the size of the logbuffer. Actually our logbuffer is 28M which in my opinion is very large so maybe I should put it even smaller. It is very well possible that the logbuffer is causing this problem. Thank you for the tip.
    - I will also definitely look into the I/O. Eventhough we work with ASM on raid 10 I don’t think it is wise to put redo logs and datafiles on the same disks. Then again, it is not installed by me. So, you are right, I have to investigate.
    Thank you all very much for still responding even if I put this in the totally wrong category.
    Greetings,

  • RMAN BACKUP hangs up on archive logs

    Hi,
    in 9i on Linux, My rman backup script is :
    RMAN> run {
    2> allocate channel t1 type disk;
    3> backup incremental level=0 format '/mnt/rman/MYDB/full_%d_%t_%s_%p' database;
    4> sql 'alter system switch logfile';
    5> backup format '/mnt/rman/MYDB/al_%d_%t_%s_%p'
    6> archivelog all delete input;
    7> backup format '/mnt/rman/MYDB/ctl_%d_%t_%s_%p' current controlfile;
    8> }
    It works well until :
    backup format '/mnt/rman/MYDB/al_%d_%t_%s_%p' archivelog all delete input;
    Here it hangs up (may be there are many many archive log files). What do you propose ? How can we ask RMAN just backup archive logs since some recent dates ? How can we delete most of ancient archive logs ? Since many times RMAN backup was in error then archive logs were not deleted. Now impossible to finish RMAN backup. Many thanks for your help.

    Hi,
    I launched following since last night but it is always waiting :
    RMAN> crosscheck archivelog all;

  • What to do if there is abrupt termination of RMAN during a backup session

    Hi All,
    I am trying to automate the Level 0 and Level 1 backups which we ought to take. Following the is the RMAN related part of it for L1 backup:
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;"
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '${BKP_LOCATION}/${LType}_%F';"
    run {"
    allocate channel c1 type disk;"
    backup"
    incremental level 1 cumulative tag = $BTAG"
    format '${BKP_LOCATION}/${LType}_%d_set%s_piece%p_%T_%U.bkp'"
    (database include current controlfile tag $CTAG) ;"
    sql 'alter system archive log current';"
    sql 'alter system archive log current';"
    backup archivelog from sequence ${CSEQ} tag $ATAG"
    format '${BKP_LOCATION}/${LType}_Arch_%d_set%s_piece%p_%T_%U.bkp';"
    release channel c1;"
    exit;"
    In the above snippet, the variables are substituted for within a shell script and then put into a command file for RMAN. I am a novice in the backup and recovery. I got above piece of code from someone working on RMAN and built my automation logic around it.
    The script works fine and I am trying to build to script level recovery feature around it. My question is:
    -- What happens if I invoke the script, the backup session starts and then there is abrupt termination of the RMAN session either because of losing the db connection or receiving an interrupt signal or a kill signal or some other weird reason.
    -- What if I re-invoke my script? Will it start from the point where it was stopped earlier or would it start from the point where we had last successful Level 1 backup completed?
    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi user781131,
    What happens if I invoke the script, the backup session starts and then there is abrupt termination of the RMAN session either because of losing the db
    connection or receiving an interrupt signal or a kill signal or some other weird reason?The backup set which rman was creating is not commited due to the abnormal termination but all succesfull backup sets can be used.
    What if I re-invoke my script? Will it start from the point where it was stopped earlier or would it start from the point where we had last successful Level 1 backup
    completed?In your backup script you do not use the < NOT BACKED UP SINCE TIME > clause so it will again do a level 1 backup off all datafiles.
    See:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14194/rcmsynta009.htm#i1017236
    This option is a convenient way to back up files that were not backed up during a previous failed backup. For example, you back up the database, but the instance fails halfway through. You can restart the backup with the NOT BACKED UP SINCE TIME clause and avoid backing up those files that you already backed up. If AS BACKUPSET is set, then this feature is only useful if RMAN generates multiple backup sets during the backup.
    Regards,
    Tycho

  • Rman backup archive log

    Hi Guys,
    Can advise on the syntax to perform rman backup of archive logs generated in last 2 days?
    Should it be 1 or 2?
    thanks!
    1. BACKUP ARCHIVELOG UNTIL TIME 'SYSDATE-2';
    2. BACKUP ARCHIVELOG FROM TIME 'SYSDATE-2';

    What prevents you from trying both?
    I'm not trying to be difficult here but why take the time to ask people in a forum, not even supplying a version number, and not just find out?
    It took me less than 60 seconds to cut-and-paste both of your command lines into RMAN and look at the output.

  • RMAN backup archive logs on tape that has not been backuped yet...

    We are using RMAN with catalog on Legato. Oracle 10gR2.
    Our archive log backup is taking every 2 hours with scriipt:
    run {
    allocate channel t1 type 'SBT_TAPE';
    allocate channel t2 type 'SBT_TAPE';
    send 'NSR_ENV=(NSR_SERVER=hitbackup.hit.hypohr,NSR_CLIENT=a22ff020.hit.hypobck)';
    # 0.0840278 = 121 minutes!
    backup archivelog FROM TIME = 'sysdate-0.0840278' filesperset 50 format '/arch1_%d_%u/';
    release channel t1;
    release channel t2;
    }In the night we take everyday full backup where we delete all 9 days old archive log which has been backuped on tape at least once. The script is following:
    run {
    allocate channel t1 type 'SBT_TAPE';
    allocate channel t2 type 'SBT_TAPE';
    send 'NSR_ENV=(NSR_SERVER=hitbackup.hit.hypohr,NSR_CLIENT=a22ff020.hit.hypobck)';
    backup full database filesperset 2 format '/full_%d_%U/';
    release channel t1;
    release channel t2;
    allocate channel d2 type disk;
    delete archivelog until time 'trunc(sysdate)-9'
    backed up 1 times to device type SBT_TAPE;
    release channel d2;
    }Problem is that sometimes archive log backup is not performed (Legato head is busy with other backups or some restore that happened in the time when backup is scheduled and later 2hours frame is missing those logs) and then we backup them with some manual script.
    We'd like to know how to backup to tape all archive logs in last 5 days that has not been backuped once to tape. I.E:
    backup archivelog FROM TIME = 'sysdate-7' filesperset  50 format '/arch1_%d_%u/'
    backed up 0 times to device type SBT_TAPE;This part will be included in daily job...which should recollect all missing archive logs from last seven days.
    THX

    You could try to use the NOT BACKED UP x TIMES clause from BACKUP command.

  • RMAN backup in noarchived log mode

    Hi,
    can we take RMAN backup in noarchived log mode?
    If yes, how? just run backup database command or ?
    thanks

    You can use RMAN to backup a database in noarchivelog mode but you need to shutdown and mount the database. e.g.:
    rman target /
    RMAN> shutdown immediate
    RMAN> startup mount
    RMAN> backup database
