Logic 8 on 10.6.4 - finally?

I just have bought SL, and wonder if Logic Pro Studio 8 works well on the latest upgrades of OS X (Logic Pro 8.0.2 and SL 10.6.4). I have found a lot of issues about the problems.
I don't consider the problems that are based on firmware of the soundcards.
Please, tell me:
1. Is there any benefit to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard?
2. All that have upgraded to Snow Leopard - what are your experiences?

Hi,
Logic 8 will not work on the latest OS. "Planned Obsolescence" Look it up.
1.-Snow Leopard is a version of Leopard that has a lot of fixes and is leaner to run than the regular Leopard.
2.- I love it.
Cheers
PS, all the "plugs" from 8 are in 9, plus some new ones which are very exiting, that are only in version 9.

  • Logic Sample EXS playback from Finale - switch from MachFive?

I've been using MachFive for a few years, but am frustrated that it doesn't allow for performance changes via keyswitches in VSL libraries. (Keyswitches that change an instrument from, say, staccato to legato, without loading a new sample instrument.) MachFive 2.0, announced over a year ago, would have supported these features, but it seems to have become vaporware. I know that keyswitches and release samples work fine in EXS, and I'm considering switching from DP to Logic, but have a few questions first.
I do all of my writing on Finale, and I have Finale's output set to go through the MachFive instruments. (That is, all MIDI in Finale goes through MachFive's virtual instruments.) For large scores, I have 2 16-channel instruments on MachFive, each channel with a different sample instrument. (So, channel 1 is piccolo, channel 2 is flute, channel 17 xylophone, 24 tuba, etc.) I've been reading the forums here, and I'm now confused about how Logic handles this. People have talked about multi-timbral, multi-channel, etc., and it's all getting a big perplexing to me.
I understand that EXS will handle it differently -- but will it work? Can I set it up so that, as far as Finale is concerned, MIDI channel 1 will be a piccolo, and MIDI channel 24 will be a tuba? Am I going to run into memory issues in Logic that I don't encounter with MachFive? (I have a total of 4 GB of RAM. The Vienna Symphonic samples are huge, and I have them set up to load into RAM rather than stream, and it's only in massive orchestra fast tutti sections that I have any hiccups in MachFive. I never get any "out of memory" errors.)
Logic looks very nice, and I've been told that it runs more efficiently than DP, but before I spend all of that money, I want to be sure that my sample playback will be better -- not worse. Is it worth switching to Logic, primarily so I can have access to keyswitch program changes? (When I put it like that, it seems incredibly silly...)

The EXS is not an Audio Unit plug-in, It only lives inside of Logic.
If your intention is to use the EXS-24 inside of Finale, you cant do it.
If you use the Audio MIDI setup's IAC to transmit midi channels out of Finale and have Logic receive them, that might be possible. I believe you can only have 16 channels of midi on the IAC bus.
I think your best choice is to use Kontakt 2, that does support keyswitching and program changes.

  • Final Cut to Logic Express 8, back to Final cut?

My buddy uses an older version of Final Cut Pro, v4 maybe? I forget. Anyway, he needs to work on the audio track, it's got some pops and glitches. I was thinking of having him export the file as a QT somehow, and I could open it in my copy of Logic Express 8. I could experiment with plugins and correction tools in LE8, then when fixed, he could somehow take the file back for final editing.
Is this possible with LE8? I know it's supposed to work, but is it worth all the effort?

    Hi Guys ,
i had so much problems with this but figured it out after testing and checking settings and reading some tutorials . I wanted to share what i did simply in case it may help some one with a similar or same problem.
    this is whats i did
After Exporting Audio from Final Cut :
Now In Logic > Preferences > Global > Video > go to bottom right hand corner click > Video project settings > Audio – and change Sample rate to 48 khz
Save and bounce file at 48khz . Now import the file into Final Cut Pro where it should Synch perfect!
    Hope this may help someone

  • Merging Logic and Final Cut Pro

I'm a long time Logic user but new to Final Cut Pro. The perspective of a convergence between those two applications boggles my mind. Just would like to know whether there is a forum where I can discuss about this topic.
    Have a nice day

Assuming you talk about Final Cut Pro X, it provides a new way of handling audio, based on Metadata (i.e. Roles). However it still misses some tight integration with an audio post production app (like Soundtracks Pro before).
I wouldn't be surprised if the rumored Logic X will provide that integration and a shift to "metadata based mixing". That for sure would stir up the DAW playing field a bit.
A tighter video integration on the Logic side is long overdue and they have to do something about it anyway. Not only is video export not possible in 64bit mode, Cubase allows mutliple video clips on a Project and ProTools has now an even tighter integration with Avid, so Logic is falling way behind in that sector.
    Hope that helps

  • OffTopic: FInal Cut Pro / Logic question

    Ok,
In Logic I can have a quicktime MOVIE open as a float, then move my audio clips along the time-line.........Quick time movie will "Lock" to the SPL pointer's postion.
    NOW,
I am sending my director the cues I've done over Ichat (cool huh;-) ANd while I change the postions of the cues in Logic...He wants to do the same in FCP (we are doing some creative spotting)
BUT he does not have Logic...He has Final Cut Pro........surely this same thing can be achieved in FCP without having to render (2hour process ) each time we move a Audio cue on the timeline of FCP.....
    PLEASE help,
    Thanx,
    SvK

    Hi Steven,
It is probable that the files you are sending to your director are a different format than the one set up in the FCP "sequence" usually this would be set 16 bit 48k - it is in the FCP sequence preferences menu. If it is different every time the audio is moved the audio only might require rendering - though it should still play out without rendering with a bleeping tone. If this is the problem he could use QuickTime pro (supplied with FCP) to change the file format you send to the sequence preset he is using then no rendering would be required (Think if you import an mp3 into Logic it has to be converted before you can use it in the arrange window)
Other things to ensure is the FCP sequence has a dedicated audio track for your audio so moving it does not affect any of the directors video or sound regions which could also be a cause for rendering being required.
    Hope this is of assistance

  • Pro App Serial Problem - Final Cut Studio Logic Studio and Soundtrack

    Installed Logic Studio 8
    then
Installed Final Cut Studio - Academic
    both include Soundtrack.
now Soundtrack has the academic splash screen.
If i wanted to... how can i assign soundtrack to my logic studio serial?
would i have to reinstall soundtrack? is there any situation where this would matter?
    i don't know.
    thanks everyone.

If i wanted to... how can i assign soundtrack to my logic studio serial?
would i have to reinstall soundtrack? is there any situation where this would matter?
I wouldn't worry about it. The program is exactly the same whether it thinks it's an academic version or not, and I can't think of any other reason why this would make any difference.
If you really wanted to see whether you could get it connected back to Logic, go to HD/Library/Application Support/Pro Apps, and dump the file that says 'Logic Studio System ID.' This is the file that holds your Logic serial number. Next time you load Logic, put your serial number in again and it will create a new Logic Studio System ID file. When you do this it will make the Logic System ID file newer than the FC System ID file, and maybe Soundtrack will be connected to this one instead of FC's. But again, don't worry about it - it really makes no difference at all.

  • Finale to Logic SOS

    Hello everyone,
I'm working on an important project and the deadline is tomorrow, need help from you experts out there...
I have imported a file from finale 2007 to logic for a short film (approx 7 min.) and have been experincing sync issues When importing the project into Logic.
I have checked that all frame rates match (24fps) in both softwares but the music, begining initially at sync, gradually falls off sync as the project continues...
How can I preserve a perfect sync between the programs?
    Please help....

if you are working with audio within finale then you must have set a sample rate. are the sample rates between logic and finale the same?
what kind of video are you syncing to? if you have a hit at say 1minute in to the video, you should have burnt in timecode on your video that should match the smpte within finale when you were writing it. how does that line up with the smpte within logic. it should not really be possible to have them out of sync because you will see drift in the BITC on your video and smpte within logic. something that with contiguous sync on won't happen unless you have the wrong frame rate set.
you seem to be doing it the 'wrong' way round in that mostly we write and sync on logic and then export to finale to finalise the score, although i prefer to do this within logic anyway.
what you need in order not only to trouble shoot but ensure that everything is absolutely spot on is burnt in timecode BITC in your video picture. without out it, you are sticking your head into a lions mouth and shouting 'lunch!'.

  • Logical vs. Physical Partitioning

    Hi,
In a discussion of logical partition the author pointed out that
“… if a query that needs data from all 5 years would then automatically (you can control this) be split into 5 separate queries, one against each cube, running at the same time. The system automatically merges the results from the 5 queries into a single result set.”
    1. Can you direct me on how to “control this” as the author indicated?
    2. Also, the author noted that
“… Physical Partitioning - I believe only Oracle and Informix currently support Range partitioning. …”
    a) Does it mean that BW does not use physical partitioning?
    b) Where do we indicate physical or logical partitioning as an option in BW?
    c) Or, when we talk about dimension table, etc. is there always an underlining database such as Oravle, Infomix, etc in BW? If so, what does BW use?
    3. For physical partitions, I read that the cube needs to be empty before it can be partitioned. What about logical partition?
    4. Finally, what are the underlying criteria to decide on logical or physical partitioning or both
    Thanks

. Can you direct me on how to “control this” as the author indicated?
    You make this setting RSRT.
    2. Also, the author noted that
“… Physical Partitioning - I believe only Oracle and Informix currently support Range partitioning. …”
DB2 also support partiioning. Also the current relese of SQL server support partitioning.
    b) Where do we indicate physical or logical partitioning as an option in BW?
Physical parittions are set up in the cube change option. When you are in  the cube change mode, on the themenu, chose extras - performance / DB parameters - parttitios.
Now a screen will pop giving the time characteristics in the cube and choose the characteristic (s) that you wish to chose and confirm the entries - then you will get another small pop up where you set the no of parittions.
Also, pl note that you can partition only on fiscalyear and fiscal period and not on other time characteritsitcs.
Logical partitions: Logical paritions are nothinb but spilting the cube into numerous cubes of smaller sizes. You combine all these cubes by means of multi provider. For example, if you have 1000 cost centers , you may want to split into cubes based on the cost cenree numbers and combine them into a multi provider.
    No more setting is required.
    c) Or, when we talk about dimension table, etc. is there always an underlining database such as Oravle, Infomix, etc in BW? If so, what does BW use?
Dimension tables / fact tables/ ODS tables /master data tables are all database tables. Which ever database you use and when yu activate these objects, the tables are created in the underlying database.
    3. For physical partitions, I read that the cube needs to be empty before it can be partitioned. What about logical partition?
Logical partiton can be done any time.
    4. Finally, what are the underlying criteria to decide on logical or physical partitioning or both
The underlying criteria is facotrs such as :
    (a) the no of years of history tou wish to view in reports.
    (b) te no ofyears you will hold the data in BW before archiving.
    (c) othe performance matters related tro sizing.

  • Final Cut Pro X CRASHES every time I try to add a transition

G'day - just wondering if anyone with this issue has found a solution ? Have seen some scatterings regarding this issue - but no real solutions. It's doing my head in - just trying to add a simple cross disolve will crash it everytime. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

Well, this actually got me somewhere!  Thanks so much, I can limp along now.
I'm an audio guy by trade, so I had a ton of plugins installed.  Apparently, FCPx is just a poorly designed and inept at handling audio components.  All of my plugins are updated and 64-bit compliant, but apparently FCPx just can't handle audio components.  They all work fine in ProTools and Logic Pro X, but cause Final Cut Pro X to crash instantly.  They have to be removed from the Audio Components folder altogether for FCPx to run.  Even the brand new Waves bundles I just bought.
It's frustrating that the only thing you can use in the plugin section are Apple's built-in utilities, but I can make do for now until I learn a replacement for FCPx.
    Thanks for the insight!

  • Strange: suddenly logic takes about ten minutes to start!

    hi!
some hours ago I worked on a logic film underscore project. so i had a quicktime movie loaded in my project.
then I opened the final cut project from which the movie was from. I don't remember if I closed the logic project before, but the actual movie file was just a bounce, not used by both of the apps.
when I tried to open the logic project later it seemed to stop doing anything just after closing the startup screen, so I thought there was a problem with final cut causing logic to crash.
As final cut always takes "hours" to check the waves plugins on every booting, I always swich between special logic- and fcp- sets in "AudioUnit Manager", a tool to have different configs of AUs for different apps or so. Never had any problem for years with that.
So I tried everything with the AU plugins. nothing.
Then I renewed logic's prefs and all that stuff. nothing. then I installed the new pro application support. HEEY! it worked again. but just for a while.
opening other (even small) projects still takes about ten minutes now. nice coffee pause..:-) but I can't drink that much coffee at night.
what can it be? a problem with the project manager?
    any suggestion?
    cheers

are you using sample base instruments in those projects a lot using exs or kontakt? when paths to samples get messed up for some reason it can result in along waiting times each time a project is loaded.
lately my kontakt samples get loaded without any sign of activity. if it is a large orchestral score i see a dead screen for quite a while before suddenly everything pops up and is ready to work with. i recall seeing progress bars or similar things in the past though...
repair permissions and defragging (idefrag) may help as well.
btw. i can drink as much coffee as i want late at night, even five minutes later i can sleep well. seems i am immune. but right now i am also having plenty of hardware issues to deal with so that's a good thing i guess...!

  • Final Cut Pro X Crashes Every Time I Select Effects Browser

    Hi,
I'm a novice FCPx user that works at a non-profit, and I do some light video work.  I'm running FCPx on a MacBook Pro Retina 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB Ram, OS X 10.10.1.
Every time I click on the Effects Browser, FCPx crashes.  As is to add insult,  if it crashes in this manner I ALWAYS have to use PrefMan to delete preference files to even get FCPx to open without sticking on "Restoring Window Layout".
I'm incredibly frustrated, nobody can seem to diagnose the issue, and it renders this application worse than useless.  Should I abandon ship and direct our organization to purchase copies of Adobe Premiere Pro for other editing machines, or is this an isolated issue that can be fixed?
Thanks for any help you might be able to give!

  • Trying to export XML from FCP6 to Logic Pro 8.

Will not do anything.  I export and save from FCP.  Then try to import the XML file in Logic.  The prompt when trying to import the XML file says it cannot find the volume.  I redirect it to the same file, and then it asks if I want to do the 48000 or 44100 conversions, I pick either, but it does nothing after.  Nothing shows up in Logic, not in the bins, in the tracks or anywhere.  What gives?

In live weezer videos the bass player is hitting a pad on a keyboard so i know its a key sound not a bass guitar slide.
He could just be triggering a bass slide sample...
It's some kind of bass sound that bends down, in a similar style to what a bass player might do. Whether it's a real bass or a synth is difficult to say (and probably doesn't matter a great deal), but in any case it's certainly compressed, and grunged up dirty with some amp sim or distortion...

  • Help! connections for the midi and audio cables for use with Apogee & Logic

Newbie to mac! A Basic question, I know.
    I have:
    Logic express 8
    1 x Apogee Duet
    1 x Midi in/out interface.
After my external sound module recieves the midi info stored in logic, it creats an audio signal.
    QUESTION!
How do I... monitor this output with my audio recoded files in logic. so audio and midi (final mix) is played together, using the Duet?
I understand that a seperate mixer would do the job, i have one, but i need to keep the music making and recoding process as simple as possible, otherwise i get annoyed with lots of settings and things and give up... for another year!
    All I wanna do is:
Record one real instrument at a time. these would be Guitar, Bass and Mic. (ok, simple connections with the duet.)
Record midi keyboard messages into logic, edit, quantise etc. rhave logic send the midi info out to my roland xv 5080, and route the audio out of the xv 5080 with the final mix.
(I dont know if this can be done with the Duet??)??
Whilst advoiding the use of a seperate hardwarwe mixer.
would i have been better going for the Ultralite or something?
Any help is much appreciated as i am struggling to get my head round the basics.

I understand that it can be done this way, but i will be continually swapping leads. Yes a mxer wuld solve this, bu would a cheapish mixer effect the sound quality of the duet?
could i use the digital output on roland and send to the imac's digital in? and at the same time record audio in logic. so basically this digital signal will go into imac into logic then be routed straight to the output that the duet is connected to? Would this work, is there a seting in logic where u can have more than 1 input and send this straight to the main outputs??
ooooo, maybe thats a possibility, just hought of that. dont know if it'll work though.
    Thanks clanwork

  • Final Cut Express HD freezes sometimes

Sometimes FCE will freeze during timeline playback on a certain clip. I insert the clip into the timeline and playback and it freezes and when I click something I get the beach ball. I force quit and go back and it does the same.
I delete the clip and then re-insert the clip it and play it it does it again, but if I use a different clip its fine. I have tried to change the in piont of the clip a bit and it still the same.
In one instance I changed the speed of the clip and it worked fine. This clip is like all my others, DV that I shot on a sony pc 101, imported just fine.
I have about 130 gigs of video and about 10 minutes of edited project so far and this has happened with 2 clips. But is is really bugging me. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance.

Tom- At work now so I'll try and get you the detailed specs later tonight.
My set up is very much "plug-and-play", install defaults. The drives I use are assembled by Pacific Pro Audio using WB and some "Oxford 911" chip set. I know nothing other then they are my audio dealers for the studio and I never have any issues with the drives in the recording studio with my dual 1.8, 2.5 gig ram, OS 10.3.9. I gone through easily a dozen of them on various projects.
They format and split the drives into three volumes before they send them to me as I'm told that is a more efficient way to use for Pro Tools. Again, not a techie here but after 15 years with these guys, they've never be wrong yet so I take the word for it.
As for this particular computer, the only add-on apps I run is Aperture, Dreamweaver, Logic Pro, Sountracks Pro and Final Cut Express. The Prosonus is my only add-on piece of hardware besides the drive. All audio and video is set to go to the external drive, all settings are defaults and I haven't had to load any other drivers.
This comp has had very little work since I picked it up a 6 months ago. Mostly email, a few hours of video and some miscellaneous songwriting in Logic. It's darn near "fresh out of the box". I'd be hard pressed to find anything strange in my set up.

  • How do i get logic on my laptop?

i can't figure out how to get logic pro 9 on my laptop. i tried to copy software from my desktop onto an external drive...then dump to laptop...doesn't seem to work.
    driving me nuts

You are wasting your time trying to copy Logic across...
What you need to do is use the DVDs to install Logic onto your Laptop (Note: Install not just copy)
If your Laptop doesn't have a DVD drive built in then you can use Remote Disk to utilize the DVD drive on your older Mac...
Use the CD or DVD drive from another computer with your Mac - Apple Support
Otherwise you will need to obtain a USB DVD drive like the Amazon Basics model found here...
    http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Portable-External-Optical-Drive/dp/B003M0NT1M /ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422590767&sr=8-1&keywords=Basics+usb+DVD+Drive
or you can make DMG images of your DVDs on your Desktop Mac and then copy them to an external HD.. Connect the External HD to your Laptop and install from those...
    http://geek.michaelgrace.org/2009/06/create-dmg-image-from-a-disk/
Note: Once you have installed Logic Pro 9 you will also need to update it to 9.1.8 before running it the first time..
Use this link to achieve that...
    Logic Pro 9.1.8
Finally, Remember... you will need the original Serial code provided with Logic Pro 9 to install it. The serial number can be found in the Logic Pro 9 Packaging.
If you bought the upgrade version of Logic Pro 9 (Logic Studio 2.0) you will also need to original serial number for the full version of Logic Pro 8 (Logic Studio 1.0).. Again that is found in the LP8 packaging.
