Logic and external timecode

Hi
I am recording live video and multi-tracking audio with Logic 8.
Can i send the timecode from my video-recorder into logic so that the time code matches on both.
What do i need and how is it done?
My video-recorder has smpte timecode out or in.

Yes, you can. You need a Midi Interface with SMPT In like e.g. the Motu Midi Express XT - hook up your Video to that and set Logic to external sync in the Project Prefs->Synchronization - that's it.

Hi! This is basically a pre-sales tech question.
I'm looking to run Logic Studio on a new MacBook. I'm getting that out of the way since my profile says I'm currently a Windows user.
I have a very nice bank of hardware synths. I don't want to moth-ball them with the purchase of a new system, since they sound better than Logic's internal software synth sounds (which I previewed at my local music store).
So my question is: Is Logic user-friendly when it comes to accessing sounds on external synthesizers? In the early 90's I used a setup with point-and-click access to external sythesizers. I don't remember which program, but it may have been Cubase. There was a lovely drop-down menu where I could select the Oboe from my Proteus/2, or a drum kit from my Korg 05/RW.
There must be lots of Logic Studio users out there using external hardware synths, right? Is this an easy thing to do?

I highly doubt you will ever go to total 'software' synths and sounds dude! I'm still finding 'golden' sounds from my early 90's gear! Sure, we all love the ease and convenience of software but as others here have stated... once you 'enable' Logic to send MIDI data it becomes part of your normal routine. Sometimes even ONE sound from an external synth can make your project, right? Go for it man. The wealth of info Apple provides ' right in the box' (manuals?... oh ya dude!) makes learning easy! ~King

Logic and External Device

I've read alot about this and I've understood that alot of people have similar problems but I really cant solve this. I have a Macbok Pro ret. with 128 Gb HD, wich isn't very much memory. Since the harddrive is so small, I want logic to save everything on my external device, but I can't find where to change that, the ohnly thing I can do is to manually change location everytime i save a project. I want to chage the standard for all the files and audio logic saves in my library.
Secondly, I want to install apple's jam packs to my external device and when im in the installation window and choose my external harddrive, the "next" button turns grey, indicating that it isn't allowed. How can I solve this?

CCT says that there shoud be a file called "com.apple.MusicApps" after going into "/private/var/folders/", but I cant find "com.apple.MusicApps". I can find similar files though, if i for example click
0b => xv5_4cyd10s5lpcpvBlabla many crazy letters => T => com.apple.logic.pro.savedState then I can find a file called "com.apple.logic.pro.savedState", wich obviously is wrong but proves im close. So I cant find the file CCT is talking about, but if you help me find it, and I finally arrive to the last file he mationed;"lp9_ms2_content_2011

Will the M-Audio NRV10 work with logic so I could record multiple audio instruments at the same time?

Yes, it will. There are lots of interfaces out there - so it gets down to (as it usually does) what you need to accomplish. This unit looks a bit expensive IMO though.
Read this review at Mix, if you haven't already. It will give an idea of the signal i/o and routing capabilities.

Conflict between Logic Pro and external device error in Logic Pro X./cpu problems

hi Logic users,
using a MacBookPro 15 inch Retina, 2,7 GHz intel Core i7, 16 GB Ram, OSX 10,8,5, Logic X 10.0.4.
i am wondering if you can help me out with the following problem i cant solve:
when starting logic x with a not too big arrangement, lets say using one third to half of cpu, i open u-he plugin Diva and the cpu is going up on full range and the following error appears: "sample-rate 39299 (number always changes) reconized. Check conflict between logic pro x and external device"
as external device im running a VirusTi and as audio-device Apogge Duet. when dis-connecting both devices, i have the same problem.
putting the sample buffer up to the highest rate, doesnt change anything.
same arrangements on friends computers dont show that problem, so it has to be something wrong in my set up.
anybody has an idea?

Have you used Diva's preset Accuracy system to reduce CPU load?

Click on the Main button at the bottom of the window. To the right of the Master section are two selectors called Accuracy and OfflineAcc. In the current version of Diva these are global parameters i.e. they remain fixed across all presets, per loaded instance:
draft........CPU-friendly, but FM will sound rough and resonance is primitive i.e. NOT zero delay! fast......... Fine for older computers and/or when you need more polyphony in acceptable quality great...... The best compromise between quality and polyphony on high-power computers divine..... Top-quality zero delay feedback filters... but can your computer can handle it?
OfflineAcc only has two options – same or best (i.e. divine in the current version).
Some host applications may have problems rendering to audio at the selected accuracy, but the
better ones include an “inform plug-ins of offline rendering status” or similar.
I typically work in draft mode and then switch to Devine or best when freezing the track or bouncing the entire project...

Sending audio from logic to external hardware effects, and back into Logic

Hi,
I am currently trying to send audio from Logic to external hardware effects and then record this back into Logic.
My audio interface is a Edirol UA-25 which has only two outputs '1 and 2'.
I understand that I could create an 'aggregate device' which would create two more ins + outs being '3 & 4'.
I also understand that would need to use the Logic I/O plug in configuring this routing.
When treating the audio via the external hardware I particularly only want to hear the audio being processed and not the original 'uneffected' signal.
Can someone please explain if I am able to do all of this with just the UA-25, and if so, then how.

You connect output 1 of your interface to your active speaker.
You connect output 2 of your interface to the input of your external effect.
You connect the output of your external effect to input 2 of your interface.
You route your track in Logic to output 2.
You create a new track.
You route this new track to output 1 and output 1 only.
You choose input 2 as the source for this track.
You arm the track.
You hit Record.
You hit Stop some time later.

Having problem with my recording device.
Can you tell me where and how can I set up all lines in and out?
I cannot find it anywhere.
I went to drivers/core audio but i cannot see anything like choosing chanels for recording.

I have this problem:
when I plug in sound card everything is going fine and play sounds good. But I am not able to record any sound from my dj-mixer connected to FA 101 (line in 3.4 right and left channel:)
I even can not find set up in Logic pro 7 to choose from which channel I should record sound into computer.
I went to mac os utilities and chose Audio Midi Setup utility.
Setups are as follows:
Audio devices (i am not using any MIDI devices at the moment)
Default in put and out put (system output) : All Edirol Fa -101 (3171)
There are two tables bellow these settings. For audio in put and out put. Both are the same.
First column or line says Non-Interleaved device and it is grey - blind so there is no chance to change anything in this option.
Those are as follows:

Format 44 100 Hz 10ch-24bit
and than Chanel and volume slider with value of dB.
But I am able to set only Master Volume. The others are gray and blind (not available).
So I would like to ask how can I choose and unlock the other outputs and inputs as well and record samples in Logic (and other programs as well)

Logic and 23.976fps for HD video production

Why doesn't Logic Pro recognize 23.976fps. you can set the timecode frame rate manually in the synchronization preferences and uncheck auto recognize incoming frame rate. but if checked, Logic recognizes 23.976fps as 24fps. Is this because Midi Time Code does not support 23.976? (or does it?) I use a Motu 828mkII firewire interface that has smpte timecode input that Logic recognizes. Logic seems to recognize all other incoming frame rates (29.97 non drop, 29.97 drop,25,30 non drop, 30 drop) but recognizes incoming 23.976fps as 24fps. this becomes a serious problem in the field when multitrack audio capturing while chasing timecode provided by video production trucks or bays. for HD video production, 23.976fps is happening more and more. does anyone have a solution? can Logic read any other timecode formats besides MTC?

yes. Logic does have a 23.976fps setting in the synchronization preferences. this works fine as a setting when working with transfered OMF sessions or transfered sessions from Final Cut as an internal session frame rate. but Logic will not chase external 23.976fps because Logic's external timing is based on Midi Time Code which does not support 23.976fps. If you feed Logic 23.976fps from an external timecode generator, it auto detects it as 24fps. so when capturing audio chasing 23.976fps the files are all timecode stamped incorrectly and are not running at video speed. Apple really needs to address this issue since they are on the forefront when dealing with HD video production with Final Cut and since Logic is their flagship audio software they need to figure this out. can anyone explain to me that I'm wrong because I'm thinking about switching to some other software that doesn't depend on MTC for external sync.

If you have records that show that you've taken your MacBook Pro in for a year to fix the machine, I would escalate the problem to Apple Customer Relations - unfortunately I don't have a number for Spain.
It would only seem logical to me that if you've been trying to have the machine repaired during the time that the 'recall' was in effect that you should be eligible for a new logic board. But only customer relations will be able to make that call.
Good luck - take the issue as high up the food chain as you can and see what happens.

You will need to create custom web part editor. Look at the following example. It also have added button and its events. I am sure you can use this sample as base and code your logic.

10.4.7 update and external firewire problems with HD corrupion

Dear all,
Advised by Jpfresno I started this new topic about Tiger 10.4.7 update.
I will repeat my post and what was happening 2 weeks ago:
“In 5 years 10.4.7 update was a tragedy for my Powerbook Ti 667. When I update from 10.4.6 to 10.4.7 my 300 GB firewire drive gets corrupted, after repairing it with DiskWarrior and after connecting it to my PowerBook my computer freezes and I must shut it down via powerbutton. Safari also crashes after the update.
I just erase my Hard Drive and after that install 10.4 and update with combo to 10.4.7. But I had the same problems: finder freezes with connected firewire devices and also safari when browsing. I spend a week trying to solve the problem but no luck.
Yesterday and with no firewire devices, 10.4.7 freeze and I have big trouble in order to started my powerbook!!! Even when i insert the 10.4 install DVD it did not detected my HD. Finally I get it to work and install 10.4 and combo update to 10.4.6 and everything works. My external firewire drive and safari. I already diagnose my HD with disk utility, TechTool and directories with Diskwarrior and everything is ok.
I clone my 10.4.6 to firewire, boot from it and everything is working. I let my external drive connected and finder does not freeze.
My conclusion is that the problem is 10.4.7 update. It only give me problems and I was getting crazy with it. 10.4.6 is working good and I do not advice anyone to update to 10.4.7.”
Last week after reinstalling 10.4.6 I started to have HD problems with my Powerbook 667. I did a surface scan with TechTool I it reported bad sector. Then I done a zero disk format but after a second surface scan TechTool also reported bad sector. Then I take the decision to replace my internal HD. I bought a Samsung 40GB Hard Drive and installed it on my PowerBook. Then I have done a clean installation of 10.4.6 with all applications that I need and clone it to my hard drive with Intego Personal Backup software. Everything works on 10.4.6. and external firewire drive.
After that everything is ok. But I decided to test if my problem derivates from 10.4.7 update or from previous HD corruption. Then I install 10.4.7 update on my Internal Hard Drive. Everything is working good but after connecting my external Hard Drive the finder started to freeze!!!!!!!!!. After that I tried cloning HD to external firewire with Intego personal Backup. Everything was working good but when it was finishing the backup process started to give errors!! I started panic. I interrupted the backup process but after and after restart I found something strange with 10.4.7. The system started up, I login but I could not started any application!!!??? All my application died!
Then I have done one more clean installation of tiger and 10.4.6 update.
My conclusions are that the 10.4.7 update causes all the problems that I have on my PowerBook, because I used the same methods and same software/hardware on 10.4.6 and did no have any problem.
This last two weeks were very difficult to me. I tough that these problems do not happen with Apple computers but I was wrong!!! It is very hard to me to deal with it. I always said to my friends that I never had problems with Apple computers. I accept that a hard drive died because the use of it but I can not accept that a system update cause me 2 weeks of hard problems and make me loose precious work information! I always love apple computers and Apple OS but now I am disappointed
If anyone can explain what happen or have a solution for those problems?

There are some things you did not check in all of your troubleshooting:
1. Run the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) that came the affected computer. See my "Apple Hardware Test" FAQ for comprehensive advice on using the AHT in troubleshooting.
2. re: FireWire troubleshooting: Here is some general troubleshooting advice that may help if problems return with your FireWire drive:1. Review the AppleCare Knowledge Base document "What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire device".
2. If this problem occurred after installing a recent Mac OS X Update, and you are also unable to mount CDs, DVDs, or disk images perform the steps in this Mac OS X Hints article. This worked under Panther and may also work in certain situations under Tiger.
3. Power-on the FireWire drive before starting up (booting) your Mac.
4. Reset PRAM and NVRAM.
5. Resett the power-management chip in your Mac.
6. Try a different FireWire port. James Wiebe, CEO of WiebeTech, has published FireWire Port Failures in Host Computers and Peripheral Devices, a white paper providing backgroud information and technical analysis concerning the causes of failure for FireWire ports. This may provide additional diagnostic information.
7. Micromat TechTool Pro version 4 can test the FireWire bus in your computer: this tests the bus — not the ports — but if the problem is on the FireWire bus on the logic board, it should reveal it.
8. Check with the manufacturer of your FireWire drive or enclosure to see if any firware updates are available for such.
9. Hopefully, the partition map on the FireWire drive is not damaged. This can happen if the FireWire drive was not Ejected before being disconnected or powered off. No sound internal and external

I have a macbook right here running 10.4.11 and no sound comes out of it. not out of the internal not out of the external with headphones or speakers. The optical redlight jack isn't on, its all the way up on preferences. iTunes nothing, iMovie nothing, nothing out of the internet. The buttons work fine, it shows that its getting louder/quieter/muted but you don't hear the lil click/beep thing. I don't have warrenty anymore and don't want to get ripped off from apple. (its actually my friends laptop and don't want her to spend money if i can fix it). I'm thinking its a hardware thing, its all updated. I don't know if there is a sound driver for 10.4.11 (I mainly use PC's but Mac Pro at my friends recording studio) I highly doubt its on the software side, but it if is hardware there isn't much I can do to fix it if the mobo is fried somewhere, but if the mobo is fried the whole thing shouldn't work... unless its just the sound and sound only. correct me if my logic is off somewhere. The internal speakers don't work and external doesn't either so I think its the mobo chip that controls the sound... cuz if its software, it shouldn't visually look like its working. Anyone? Help?

It is entirely possible that the OS would indicate normal sound operation but still be responsible for a silent computer. It is also possible that a preference setting held in non-volatile memory is the cause.
For the first, you can try booting from the original disks that came with the MB & seeing if sound works. For the second, try resetting PRAM. Also try just launching Garage Band (if installed), which resets certain sound parameters that might prevent normal sound operation. (You don't have to do anything in Garage Band other than launch & then quit it.)
It is also possible (& not entirely uncommon) to have a hardware problem that just affects a subsystem, especially one associated with a port that can be damaged by an external electrical signal. One way to check for this is to obtain an external sound converter like the Griffin Technology iMic & see if sounds output via a USB port work.
It is normal not to see any light in the jack -- the MB senses the presence of a plug inserted into it, only turning on the optical output if the plug is of the optical type. If you have an optical cable with a mini-toslink plug available, you can try plugging it in & seeing if you see light at its other end.

Case statement logic for External Tables

Is there anyway I can perform a CASE logic in External table creation script?
I have a column which is supposed to receive only Numbers. But if i inadvertently receive a String, i want to insert NULL for that instance.
My table has the following creation syntax: ( I have to make a check for the NumValue column - althought I am using VARCHAR2(50) I have the transformation stage where the NumValue column has a CASE logic ; my entire file is getting rejected just because a single row in the input dat file is coming as a String)

How to validate when date format is diff Internally and externally

How can I validate the Date format if Internal format and external format is different.

Specification documents o internal and external programs documentation

I have to make some changes in the specification documents o internal and external programs documentation. I want to know i there are defined some standard conventions about the technica objects name and the requirements documentation.
We have made some formats, but we have seen change resistance=2 The problem is the amount of information required in these ne formats that we think is important and will help to reduc ambiguity and to avoid backworks but it's going to ad activities to the developers.

. Ours is bit different to what she sampled but the standardization differ from the team implementing it. You must also come out with the pattern for program "pre" and "post" documentation.
1. Before the actual coding of the program, you have to specify the estimated number of mandays needed for the analysis, coding and documentation. Don't forget to add n% for the buffer. (In our case, we use 30% buffer). Then update the form by putting on the other column the actual mandays consumed. There should not be cases that estimated < actual mandays. If problem is encountered that may cause delay, inform team lead to adjust the estimated mandays.
2. Create a form that will specifically states the unit testing made (eg. Test case, test data, how the test is perform, outcome of testing, rating: pass or fail, etc.)
3. After coding, specific program specification (eg. logic of the program, tables created, function module used, authorization checking, etc). Please be reminded to put result of "program extended syntax check" (tcode: slin) and "run time analysis" (tcode: se30) if applicable.
4. And initial code review must made also. If proper ABAP coding is incorporated and obliged by the program. If the proper naming convention that you implemented is followed by the program...so on and so forth.
