Logical font special characters in AWT Choice

Font FONT=new Font("Dialog",Font.PLAIN,12);
String TEXT="re\u0123istr\u0113tiem";
TextArea textarea=new TextArea();
textarea.setFont(FONT);
textarea.setText(TEXT);
this.add(textarea);
Choice choice=new Choice();
choice.setFont(FONT);
choice.addItem(TEXT);
this.add(choice);Result is that text in textarea is correct but dropdown menu constains odd squares. ( http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/668/dialogip6.png )
Why is this, even the font is exactly same and font contains all needed characters? Same problem occures in multiple systems I've tested. Same squares also occures in MenuItem components. But in most cases all characters are displayed correctly, like in textarea above or when using graphics.drawString(string) directly.

Have you tried doing this in Swing? Works for me:
import java.awt.*;
import javax.swing.*;
public class FontExample {
public static void main(String[] args) {
EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable(){
public void run() {
buildGUI();
static void buildGUI() {
Font font=new Font("Dialog",Font.PLAIN,12);
String text="re\u0123istr\u0113tiem";
JTextArea textarea=new JTextArea();
textarea.setFont(font);
textarea.setText(text);
JComboBox combo=new JComboBox(new String[]{text});
combo.setFont(font);
JFrame f = new JFrame("FontExample");
Container cp = f.getContentPane();
cp.add(combo, BorderLayout.NORTH);
cp.add(textarea, BorderLayout.CENTER);
f.pack();
f.setDefaultCloseOperation(WindowConstants.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
f.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
f.setVisible(true);
}

• Preview font special characters

There are times I want to type a character that is not show on the keyboard. Is there a way to preview various fonts to see if the character is available?
Thanks
LarryB

Problem is I can't change the keyboard to the font I want. For instance, suppose I need a certain symbol. I would want to change the keyboard to that font and press various keys until I found it. My keyboard stays at US. I must be missing something.
All OS's made now use the Unicode standard, under which all fonts are supposed to have the same characters at the same codepoints. So changing a font will normally not change what is produced by the US keyboard layout. Even if you have installed some non-Unicode fonts that put other stuff where Latin is supposed to be, Keyboard Viewer (and some apps) will not display it. To input characters not available from the US layout, you must switch to another layout via the "flag" menu in the menu bar or use the Character Viewer.

• Dwm special characters with tty font?

Currently, I have dwm configured like so:
http://i.imgur.com/JsTurIO.png
But as you can see, in the upper left corner, my tag names aren't displaying properly, neither is the title of the directory I'm in (†††). I've tried the dwm-pango patch, but then I'm unable to get it to use the same font it uses currently for the menubar, which I would like it to do. I also have no idea what the name of the font it's currently using is.
So, two questions: is there a way I can get special characters to show up with dwm while maintaining the same font, and if not, how can I switch the font in my terminal windows so that I can match the statusbar and my other windows? I suspect the answer to the second is just some line in .Xresources which I can probably figure out unless there's something more complicated, but I'd rather just use the same font I'm currently using, but fix the special characters problem.

However, I've made sure freetype2 is installed properly and that ft2build.h is where it's supposed to be. Why might this be happening?
Edit: Managed to figure this out. But it's still not using a console font in dwm. How can I get it to use a font from /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/?
I'm trying to also get this to work but get the same error as you did.
How did you do to fix it?
You need to add a couple lines to config.mk in the source directory.
@OP: It's not entirely clear what your goal is. The XFT patch allows for unicode .ttf fonts, and affects the entire statusbar; the current Pango patch allows for fonts in languages with unique character sets (Cyrillic, CJK, Thai, etc.) but some Pango features only affect the right-hand statusline. If you're trying to add, say, symbols or icons to your tag names for a little eye-candy, you can use the XFT patch and use unicode characters. If you're trying to use a font for your native language, Pango would be the better choice. From what I can tell (C often doesn't come easily to me), it seems each patch replaces console font support entirely for its respective alternative. I'm not aware of any solution that could allow you to use a console font in DWM while displaying special characters; you'll probably have to pick whichever patch you feel is less invasive and detrimental.
EDIT: If you choose to apply a patch and then change the fonts in your terminal emulator, the latter depends on which terminal you're using. The wiki has articles on Xterm and Urxvt; other terminals will either have a configuration menu or file you can alter, probably mentioned in the man page.

The symbol font usually doesn't work in Firefox, a website needs to use an Unicode replacement or an HTML entity to specify such a character.

• Font problem - special characters sometimes displayed incorrectly

I have a problem with the fonts installed on my computer: With some of them special characters (mainly german umlauts) get replaced by other fairly random symbols. My first guess was broken fonts, but the behaviour is completely inconsistent: In some apps they are displayed correctly, in some not, sometimes it even changes within one app:
Screenshot, wrong symbols marked red, correct symbols marked green.
Note that Exaile consistently displays them wrongly, while Pidgin does alright in the buddy list but screws up in the conversation window [edit: See below] and Audacious behaves differently even within one window! Adding to this the behaviour changes depending on the font. Most fonts are alright (so far all default fonts are, but not all installed later (manually or via pacman) are faulty), within the faulty ones it depends on the font which apps work and which don't, e.g. Bauhaus will work perfectly except that the Pidgin conversations can't display '€', Santana works for Audacious, but fails completely in Pidgin and Exaile, while Petita (the one from the screenshot) is all over the place. In some cases one font package contains different weights of the same font and those will behave completely differently.
All kinds of text editors work fine with all kinds of fonts, so do all file managers I tested.
Any idea as to what might be the source of this problem? How can one app interpret one ttf-file differently depending on where it uses it?
[edit: I was mistaken: Pidgin screws up consistently in all it's windows. It's just inconsistent with other apps: In the screenshot for example 'ü' in Pidgin works, 'ä' and 'ö' don't, in Exaile all three don't. This is insane!]
Last edited by lastchancetosee (2011-01-15 12:21:21)

I downloaded the Petita font by Manfred Klein and checked the mapping with Fontforge. Fontforge is reporting many, many errors with the mapping to Unicode, such as,
The glyph named breve is mapped to U+0005.
But its name indicates it should be mapped to U+02D8.
Most likely, the fonts with the errors were designed for a different operating system.

• Unicode display with system fonts?? (special characters)

Hi All. We're working on site that supports a couple
different languages: English, Japanese, and now German. We're using
dynamic text boxes and Remoting to display internationalized text
where necessary. Remoting makes a call to the backend, which
returns a text blurb depending on the country ID that's in use and
then the result is tossed up into the dynamic text box on screen.
Simple as pie. Works great for English, and great for Japanese. But
now we've added German, which I thought would be painless as it's
another western language.
Apparently, Flash is having problems displaying special
characters like the umlaut. In place of the special character, we
see a black diamond with a question mark. Now normally I'd think
that the font we're using doesn't have the embedded symbol for the
umlaut character but the thing is, we're not using embedded fonts
-- we're using system fonts (verdana) and everything works perfect
for the Japanese version. What in the world is going on?
If I dump the results of the remoting call to an html page,
everything displays as it should so I know the data in the database
isn't improperly encoded or anything. And Japanese works! WTF? Any
ideas PLEASE let me know, been banging my head against this for
waaay too long now...
Danke
.

Alright so if I change the data directly, and make the
a-umlaut into Ġ everything renders in Flash perfectly.
Rockin. So I patch my input cms code to run htmlentities() on the
text area. Instead of translating a-umlaut to Ġ though it
translates it to ä which Flash's html renderer doesn't
display correctly... Uh..

• Embedded font has extra space after special characters

I've built a web-based Flash movie for a major client. The SWF uses an embedded font and loads text from an XML document. The client is localizing it for several languages, which of course include special characters. In this case, the å character is giving us problems -- it always renders with an extra space after it. For example, the Danish word spørgsmål is rendered as spørgsmå l.
I might be inclined to think something's wrong with the font, because it doesn't happen with other fonts. However, some Googling turned up several other cases of people with similar problems using different fonts.
When I remove the font embedding, the problem disappears. I can watch it do this right in the IDE. As soon as I embed characters again, the phantom space returns. And it doesn't happen in any other applications.
I've spent many hours trying all kinds workarounds, but I've come up with nothing so far. As I said, I've found several other mentions of this problem but the only solution I've seen is "use a different font." In this case I can't -- it's a corporate identity font that's required for this project!
If it makes any difference, I'm linking the font in the library, then specifying the embedded characters for the text fields. I also have text fields created entirely in Actionscript (AS3) that behave exactly the same way.
Please tell me there's a solution to this! I'm pretty positive this is a Flash bug at this point, though I'd be happy if someone proved me wrong.

• Keystroke combinations needed for special characters in specific fonts?

How do you see the required keystrokes to enter special characters? Very frustrating!!! Using Pages to help my wife create a brochure. We wanted to use one of the symbols available in the font "Type Embellishments One LET" (which I assume installed with Pages). In Font Book we could see all the possible characters BUT NOT HOW TO TYPE THEM. We ended up typing scores of keys and keystroke combinations to finally see the one we wanted, then use cut and paste. There must be a better way but we (along with some Mac Support people at my work) cannot find it.
Is there a way to do this without buying a program like PopChar. Seems like this should be fundamental to using a Mac out of the box.
Thank you for any suggestions.

You can use "Keyboard Viewer" to see what characters are created with various keystrokes. Open the International Preference Pane, click on the Input Menu tab & click the box next to Keyboard Viewer. This will make this available in your menu bar by clicking the flag icon. Select "Show Keyboard Viewer" from the flag menu & you will see a layout of the keyboard. You can then hold down the shift key, the option key OR shift + option to see all the possibilities. The highlighted ones are the accents than you can apply to letters. To get "é" type option-e (nothing will appear), then type e. This accent could be place over most letters. You can change the font in the drop-down menu. Not all fonts will have all characters. Keyboard Viewer places the typing directly into the top, open document.

I have created a book in ibooks author with a custom font when previewing on the ipad the special characters within the font do not appear?

'custom' font sounds like you may be working with a font that is unsupported on iOS/iPad.
Supported fonts are found in the pull-down font menu in the toolbar. Authors are obligated (mostly) to stick to that list.

• Dynamic text, system fonts, and special characters...

This one is boggling my mind so if someone can help, please
do
I've got a dynamic text area pulling text from a MySQL
database via AMFPHP. The text includes special characters such as
accents, umlauts, etc (multi-language site platform). Most of them
work fine, and ALL of them work fine when I'm on a Mac client.
However, if I use a Windows client machine in either Firefox or
IE6, there are a couple characters that for whatever reason just
don't seem to show up -- instead I get the [] box character.
The only characters I've found that seem to be affected like
this are European quote characters like ’ “ and
” (hex characters 146, 147, 148). I'm using the familiar
ampersand-pound-number-semicolon escape sequence for them. And like
I said, they all display fine on Mac/Firefox and Mac/Safari. Why
are all my other special characters (umlauts, accents, etc) working
fine and just these things failing? It's also worth noting that
they look fine if I dump them out to a PHP file and pull it up in a
browser...
Please, if anyone can help... I've been bashing my head
against this for the better part of the day!!

Hi,
did you take a look at the "gateway.php' ? There you can
define charsets. Maybe a western europe charset will
help you out. Since french language is using a lot more
accents and so.
This is what you can find in the gateway.php of amfphp. Just
have to set the right one ;)

For instance, when I put on the Frame some Labels components, then I can't see correct some special polish native characters, I can only see some boxes. It seems the same with some other AWT components with a text entry.
