Long standing bug in ARD

There is a LONG STANDING bug in ARD dating back to at least v2.0, maybe earlier.
While controlling a remote Mac, for seemingly no reason, the display stops refreshing. The connection has not been lost just refresh is stopped. A single refresh workaround is to click the color adjustment bar, no need to move it, just click it and you get one refresh. This happens to me way too frequently! It occurs on PPC as well as Intel Macs, on local LANs and over the Internet through VPNs.
Sometimes you can break out of this by closing the connection and connecting again but it usually requires the remote machine to restart the ARD service. Doing this with ARD itself usually leaves the remote machine unreachable (ARD service stopped.) I have taken to using a near by Windows machine then ssh'ing into the Mac to manually restart the service. This works but the refresh problem re-occurs after an undetermined amount of time.
There seems to be no clues as to why this happens. There is never any particular task I am performing, no specific app I am always running, etc, etc.
Excuse me if this has already been brought up and if someone knows a fix or can point me to a KB article I would be most appreciative!
Thanks,
Josh

I, too have experienced this problem. However, much more so since I upgraded to ARD 3. This can happen, as you say, on a wide variety of clients: eMacs, G5 Dual, iMac G5, Powerbooks. Most annoying. I have found that if I use TB2 to control the client, I will find, in some cases, the SystemUIServer process is hung. By Force Quitting this process and Re-Starting the client, I am able to get ARD to run again.
This seems a little more severe than your problem, but I have had the same experience as you describe as well--the SystemUIServer is not hung in these cases. I can generally find nothing wrong on the client to account for the behavior.
Nor have I found a satisfactory answer to the problem on this forum. Would love it someone could offer a clue!

  • Long standing bug in deployJava.js has not been fixed

I thin it's outrageous that the bug reported here deployJava.js and HTTPS Problem has not been fixed. I can only assume that Oracle has abandoned Java.

You'd be surprised to know that some Java API (including Java2D & Swing) bugs & RFEs I have submitted 12 years ago have still not been fixed.
I doubt it's Oracle's fault, as much as it was Sun's, probably a generic lack of people and resources to allocate to fixing small bugs coupled with a bad prioritization system which does not automatically increase the weight of a low-priority bug after it has spend some times/months/years in the bug-db.
On the other hand, I have always wondered what do all these people at Java/Sun/Oracle do all day long (was especially true of the JavaFX team over 2009/2010 and now I am starting to do the same about the JWS devellopment/support team considering the huge amount of things non-working correctly in this technology).

  • Long standing bug in Photoshop CS2 Bridge

I have been using Photoshop CS2 for many years and have constantly "lived with" a bug in Bridge whereby, instead of an image thumbnail, there is just an icon shown. This is the same icon that appears before Bridge has read all the images to produce the thumbnails - but some of them get "stuck" and there seems to be no way to make Bridge "read" the image and produce the thumbnail. Pressing "View" "Refresh" (or PF5) does not work. Is there any fix I can download for this, please?

Curt touched on a possible concept:  Abandon Bridge and get a codec pack for Windows Explorer.  Then just use Explorer to integrate your work.  This, of course, assumes you're using Windows.
It's possible a newer version of Photoshop might come with a Bridge implementation that doesn't fail in the same way.  It's pretty much futile to hope for a change to Photoshop CS2 in this day and age.
Did Bridge CS2 have the functions the modern version has for requesting a clearing of the Bridge cache?  If not, perhaps those functions were added to address the kinds of problems you're having.

  • Kudos to the IE Team For Fixing a Long-Standing Bug

Just to show I don't always come to Microsoft.com to complain (though there is a lot to complain about), I just wanted to say that whatever the IE team (and/or forum development team) has done to correct problems with IE scripting locking up during visits
to long threads on this site...
    Thank you.
One can visit very long threads and actually expect them to actually be displayed in a short time.

    Log Message:
SDK-15764, SDK-15765 -- Two long standing Ant task bugs.
    - Ant Tasks fail when setting fork="true" and there are spaces in the path name
    - Setting fork="true" in Ant Tasks leads to warning
The issue with spaces is that forked tasks construct a stringified commandline, since Java doesn't allow you to pass real String[] to a new process. When not forking, we can pass the original String[], which makes spaces irrelevent. So the fix uses a Commandline.toString(String[]) which is designed to wrap arguments with spaces correctly with quotes, so the commandline tokenizes correctly.
    Bugs: SDK-15764 SDK-15765
QA: This affects ant calls for _all_ FlexTasks where fork=true. It would be great if we have tests for both fork="true" and "false" where we tested paths and arguments with and without spaces -- off the top of my head, good ones to try: +flexlib=/path/with spaces/, -define=CONFIG::foo,"bar with spaces", and any other arguments you can think of. Also very important: Test passing space arguments without quotes, with single quotes, with double quotes, with a mixture (illegal), and with a mixture escaping the inner set of quotes (not sure if this should work or not, probably a stupid case to test unless quotes are allowed in paths).

  • Windows 7 Boot fails on Mac Pro 1,1 (long-standing issue)

i am having a long-standing problem on my first generation (1,1) mac pro where i have an installation of Windows 7 "under" boot camp. this installation involved some kind of minor mac hack that involved writing something to ISO and/or a CD Rom and then getting the installation onto my hard drive.
right now i am not sure if i should get rid of my tech guy, buy the new mac pro as soon as it comes out, boot into safe mode, re-install windows 7 or all of the above. help please?
lately if i try and Option Boot into this volume i get a Windows closed down incorrectly error and then i hit start windows normally it will crash out and restart the computer in mac OS (i.e. in another option boot volume).
at one point the windows 7 boot was not working at all and we discovered that i had to TURN OFF my G-Tech 3 TB backup drive in order to get the Mac to boot into Windows.
i am wondering if i should focus my energies by trying to boot into Safe Mode (and if so what to do if/when i get there) but also whether this appears to be an issue with the Mac Pro, the G-Tech external, Windows or some combination of all plus some user error thrown in for good measure.
i absolutely need to have a volume of windows 7 running and this is a long-standing issue at this point.
i am also running a Carbon Copy Cloner of this volume (the one that has all my OS's) on a daily basis to another internal hard drive (which i assume does not matter but i figure to mention it).
any ideas on what to do??
i am planning at some point to buy the next release of the Mac Pro so i can upgrade the desktop to Mountain Lion to match the laptop but it seems like i should be able to get this working on my end now...
    TIA
P.S. I /am/ also noticing that my User Photo periodically drops off and i just see two blank icons (one for me and one for Guest) when i have to login. i set it to a photo and then a week or two or a boot or two later it will disappear.

    hi all,
a report back after hacking my way through siberia over here:
turns out there are bad sectors on my drive that some third party program discovered.
the disk is on it's way back to WD with a replacement in the works.
fortunately my internal cloned backup got me back up to speed with mac os but unfortunately i was not yet setup to clone my windows boot camp backup so i will be installing windows 7 boot camp one more time on this drive...

  • Major Bug! Long standing problem: "Attaching" message prevents sending reply

Guys, before I rant I want you to know I love Thunderbird, have used it for many years. However this problem has haunted me for years and I can't believe that it is not yet fixed.
This problem directly relates to problem 1048494 (when long time composing a reply Thurderbird tries to add an attachment the only given option to close or wait) - The suggestions in this post do not help.
This is very easy to replicate.
The problem: It is common to have embedded images in an email. (email Signatures often contain a logo).
It is also common to take time to create your reply - press reply and take time to draft and create the reply.
For an unknown reason - if I reply quickly, within a minute or so, it's ok. Reply sent. If I keep the reply window open for
If you take longer TB pop's up "attaching" and hangs, never sends the reply. It want's to "attach" the embedded images but cant.
    Workaround:
My workaround is either to delete the embedded images (a real pain to delete them all if it's a lot of threads in email, multiple logs in multiple signatures), or to copy text into a text editor, cancel reply, reply again and copy text back into TB and send quickly.
I had this problem on TB on Ubuntu and now on Windows 7. It's nothing to do with Virus Scan (I never used that on Ubuntu).
Can someone from development look into this please - It's preventing many of my colleagues using TB.
There seems to be 2 problems here: 1) some timer/delay that makes TB try to 'attach' embedded images 2) the problem of replying when an email history has embedded images
(p.s. I am not talking about attachments, I'm talking about embedded images often found in peoples signatures)
Please TB developer community - Please take this problem seriously:
Happy to send any info you want to help diagnose and resolve this? Please ask.

If you want to talk to developers, I suggest you file a bug.
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/
But before you do. Try both of the following.
*Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
*Restart the operating system in '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_mode safe mode with Networking]'''. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode Windows 8], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-vista Windows Vista], [http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true" Windows XP], [http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564 OSX]
; If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

  • Bug In Transform Panel (Long-Standing Issue)

I wonder when Adobe will ever bother to fix this... the units in the doc setup and ruler are not honored in the Transform Palette when the document is first opened.
The easiest workaround is to right-click on the ruler and re-select the unit you want (even if it's already checked) but this one has been around -- and widely reported -- since at least AI10, on both platforms... I've submitted bug reports for every version, but it's still here. So fracking annoying...
    </rant>

Or if you prefer one man's horror story is another man's amusement.
To be a bit more serious I do not think this is exactly a bug as to being a feature request to have a way of the user to define more clearly and deliberately at startup how they want things to work.
    Like such here's my protoype:
I believe what you see is actually expected behavior just because one changes the rulers temporarily doesn't mean they want to change the document set up they may simply want to see how things compare or use the rues for a simply visual conversion of measures. If you want to change the document set up you would use the document set up to do so.
As you easily tell fro my prototype it is actually they way things currently work and true you may thought this was not expected I believeiyt is expected behavior.
Of curse I or both of us could be wrong.
Let's wait for Skullmaker to chime in I do not think he will becauseI think he probably likes it the way it is already. But you can never tell.

  • Reliable workaround for long standing ATV2 bug

Cracked Home Share photo viewing at last !!
Windows XP Pro, iTunes11.2.0.115, ATV2 6.1.1 (DHCP) wired ethernet.
ATV2 will only make one attempt to connect to my PC, and once failed nothing in the world will persuade it to try again.
You can turn HomeSharing off/on on one or the other or both devices in any order - achieving absolutely nothing, always the message "turn on home sharing on your computer".
The solution - works every time - pull the mains on ATV2. The connection is established during reboot and works perfectly for the rest of the day.
Any chance of fixing this bug, Apple ??
If you can't fix it, give us a reboot option ?? (Do I really have to put a switch in the mains supply ?)

    More info:
ATV maintains the connection through a manual Sleep/Wakeup sequence, but it you let it time-out of its screensave mode then a reboot is required.

  • Consistent, long-standing performance issues -- seeking advice

I have a performance problem with my system. It's a problem that's lasted me years, spanning 3 different computers. This leads me to believe it's not the hardware, but something about my system. As I've moved from computer to computer (as well as when I've reinstalled the system), I've taken pains to skip the Migration Assistant and move over preferences and Application Support one by one, in an attempt to isolate and remove the bug. This always appears to work for a while, then inevitably it goes back to it's same, unresponsive, jittery, occasionally slow self. I'm considering getting a new computer, and I want to try to isolate this problem before I go through the process again.
Here is a list of symptoms. Scroll to the end to read what I've tried to do to fix it.
    DISAPPEARING FINDER
Once in a while, when waking from sleep, the icons on the Finder disappear. The Finder is be usable, and I can create Finder windows, but the icons aren't there. Fixed by force-restarting the Finder.
    MESSY ICON
OIAW, when waking from sleep, the mouse arrow will be replaced with what appears to be random lines and static. Easily fixed by hovering over a text box and forcing a cursor change.
    SAFARI BEACHBALL
I know Safari can be slow as a matter of course, but sometimes mine just GRINDS. I have to either force-quit it or leave it for a while for it to catch it's breath. Some common triggers are Flash embeds (no surprise), big pages, or pages with big photos. Almost always, a page with a lot of photos (like Big Picture), will be impossible to scroll smoothly.
    GARBLED MENUBAR
Occasionally, I'll look up to the menu bar to find it a garbled mess. It appears as if the menus from more than one application are overlain on top of each other. The bar is still useable, and if I click on any menu, it redraws itself properly.
    MOBILE ME IS A ************
This is probably the biggest, most consistent, easiest to replicate problem. When Mobile Me is syncing, I might as well not even try to use the computer. It seems to gobble up all memory, making everything else practically useless. I have it set to sync automatically, but I'm pretty sure I've tried hourly and daily and the same problem occurs. (Also, FWIW, I think it's syncing a lot more than it needs to -- not a lot changes from sync to sync. But I'm not sure how to prove this.)
    SLOW DOCK
If it hasn't been in use for a while, the dock will take a second or two to show (it's positioned on the bottom, hidden).
    FONT CORRUPTION
This hasn't been happening much lately, but for a while, particular base system fonts would suddenly stop working. The files were still there, and active in FontBook, but they wouldn't work in applications. I would have to remove the file from the System/Library/Fonts folder, then the system would recreate it, and it would work again. This would sometimes happen out of the blue.
The one consistently corrupt program in this respect is Google Chrome. It's never been usable -- all characters within the window frame are the weird box with a serif A in the middle. (Strangely, the text in the chrome itself -- bookmark text, tab text, etc -- works fine.
    ITUNES STUTTER
Sometimes the computer is so consumed with whatever it's doing that iTunes will stutter.
    DOCK STUTTER BOUNCE
Often when opening an app, the dock icon doesn't bounce smoothly, but rather stutters up and down.
    TRANSPARENT MENUBAR
Sometimes the background of the menubar disappears. Weirdly, the shadow remains.
    SLOW DASHBOARD
Even after the Dashboard has been loaded for the first time, it can be grindingly slow. It usually zooms into place okay, but activating an module and using it can take 10-20 seconds.
    SLOW SCROLLING
Sometimes, very rarely, the whole computer will have a scrolling seizure -- scrolling a window will become VERY unresponsive, and very stuttery when it finally does respond. Happens to all apps, and quitting the app doesn't appear to fix it. Only restarting (or logging out and in).
    COVERFLOW
Like other things, can be jumpy.
    IN SUMMARY, **** IS SLOW
Basically, sometimes everything just slows. Even the simplest thing is impossible to do, like opening a menu, or finder window, or typing -- it'll stutter and spits out my letters in big chunks.
    *--- THINGS I'VE TRIED ---*
I've added more RAM. When I went from 2GB to 3GB, things appeared to be fast again. That lasted a few days. Later, I went from 3GB to 4GB, with no noticeable change.
I've cleared out my fonts. I deactivated all fonts in FontExplorer except for a couple dozen essentials.
I've verified all fonts in FontBook and removed the offending ones. I fixed any conflicts in FontExplorer.
I've cleared the cache any number of ways, including with Cocktail. Cocktail offers a variety of configurations for cache clearing, and I've tried a bunch of them.
After doing all the above for the first time, I actually thought I had cleared out whatever ugliness was invading my system. Things were opening snappily, and Flash movies were playing smoothly. That lasted a day, and things went back to normal. I've tried it again several times since, and while I've seen some mild improvement, it's been nothing like that one miraculous time.
    *--- WHAT NEXT? ---*
I've seen Apple Store Geniuses about this a few times. It's been very frustrating. What it usually comes down to is: reinstall your system. I did it the first time they suggested it, and the problem always came back. I'm not going to do it again, because it's a major hassle, and obviously doesn't fix the problem.
The other thing they say to do is look at Activity Monitor. I have done that, but I'm not totally clear what to with the information I see, other than to quit more apps to free more memory. Here's the thing: I'm seeing no discernible difference in free memory between a 3GB system and 4GB system. Same slowness, same sliver of free memory in the pie chart.
I've done a lot of looking around online, including in this forum, and the one thing I read consistently is that you want to avoid pageouts. I look at my Activity Monitor and see gigs and gigs of pageouts. What I can't find is tips on how to reduce them.
I've been living with this for a while, because it's just on the threshold of tolerable. It comes in waves, and the times of easygoing make it easy to forget the annoying times. But I'd like to fix it at its root. If you have any advice, I'd love to hear it.
    *--- SCREENSHOTS ---*
    - The garbled menubar
    - An example of very active Activity Monitor with 3GB
    - And one with 4GB
    Thanks!

Erase the hard drive, install 10.6 from scratch, download and install the 10.6.3 vers. 1.1 Combo Updater, then allow Software Update to download and install any other additional software.
Do not yet reinstall any third-party software but take some time to test out everything, In this way you will be able to better now if some problems remain which may be indicative of hardware malfunction.
Since you say these problems have been long standings, I'm surprised you didn't downgrade to Leopard or take the computer in for repair. Letting problems go without solution tends to cause new problems and/or exacerbate existing ones.

  • Reproducible Long Standing Glitch (Actions or Color Engine?)

I have a way to reproduce a serious Photoshop problem:
Quite a long time ago I created a simple little action that allows me to create a new document and paste in the contents of the clipboard in one easy motion.  I assigned a function key to it so it makes it very easy for me to start a Photoshop editing session on an image in my clipboard.
This always works fine with RGB images, which comprise the lion's share of what I work with.  However, occasionally I'll have a grayscale image in my clipboard and I'll try to use this action, and this causes Photoshop to fail in various ways, sometimes with error messages implying Adobe Color Engine problems, and sometimes locking it up entirely.
Chris Cox:  Perhaps your being able to reproduce this problem as listed below can help you find and fix a difficult bug.
The following is the source for the action.  You can download it from here.
    Action: New Image from Clipboard
      Make
       New: document
       Preset:  “Clipboard”
      Paste
       Anti-alias: none
      Merge Layers
      Select Current History State
      Make snapshot
       From: Current History State
       Name:  “New”
       Using: full document
       With replace existing
      Select snapshot “New”
      Set History Brush Source
       To: Current History State
Clear History States of current document
Here's how to reproduce the problem:
    1.  Load the above "New Image from Clipboard" action into your Actions palette.
    2.  Create a simple Grayscale image via File - New:
    3.  Using the gradient tool, render a gradient across the image (I'm not sure this is necessary for the bug, but it helps you to see if the image is handled correctly in a later step).
    4.  Select - All, then Edit - Copy.
    5.  Now do File - New and create an RGB color image:
    6.  Run my "New Image from Clipboard" action.
    7.  If the step above completes, Try to paint something on the grayscale image if possible with the paintbrush.
After step 6 sometimes I'll see no image or a transparent background (as though the screen didn't update fully), sometimes a message will be emitted implying the grayscale image is being pasted into a color image.  Photoshop may lock up.  Sometimes it will actually appear to work, then step 7 will fail with an error message implying there's a problem with the Adobe Color Engine.
I can reproduce this problem at will with recent versions of Photoshop, though sometimes (rarely) it takes a few tries.
The weird part is that it will work fine if I go through the steps interactively.  Only when being run as an action on a grayscale image does it fail, and not always in the same way.
Just a wild guess, but since it seems to have to do with working with a color image in the interim, I'm thinking the actions engine in the File - New step is referencing uninitialized storage somewhere.
    -Noel

Thanks, guys!  Good luck with the fix.  Even one less time accidentally having Photoshop go south when I'm creating a new image will be a blessing!

  • Massive bugs in ARD 3.7

So I use ARD on a daily basis at work to manage over 300-400 users, and before this update everything was working fine.
The major issues that the 3.7 update seem to have caused are the following:
Eats up huge amount of RAM which cause the whole machine to crash and force quit will not work at all!!
Keeps trying to populate list of machines (even though a machine is found and authenticated it will disappear and reappear in a loop)
Failes/stuck on authenticate many machines that were working before
Not showing all users on network (even though they are there and working through normal VNC)
Showing users as OFFLINE even though they are ONLINE (if you connect to them it will authenticate and connect but not change status to online)
Copy/Install/Unix commands keeps giving failure error and will only work if you keep trying a couple of time
Will not identify machines through their DNS so all created saved lists are instead listed by IP obviously causing a problem as we use DHCP so lists are useless the next day..
All users on network have updated ARD to 3.7 and most of them run 10.8.5
The admin machine run ARD 3.7 with 10.9 on a 2010 iMac with 8GB RAM
Steps taken to fix problems with ARD, non of which solved anything:
Trashed container preferences and rebuild ARD from scratch with fresh install
rebuild machine with a brand new 10.9 install
Tried setup on a different machine (MacBook Retina with 16GB RAM)
Apple need to sort this out asap as ARD is now completely unworkable and just a nightmare when trying to support users.. Instead we are back to asking IP of user and using screen sharing through VNC (finder) instead..
Anyone have any information about any updates that will fix this? I have read about that they plan a 3.7.1 update but no ETA and not what bugs it will fix.

Good, so basicly you rely on the backup computer as you don't have any dedicated test computer. I guess you refer to the iMac as your admin computer now because as things are cleared it will eventually become the ”production environment”. I use that strategy aswell sometimes so I would back you up but I'd be clear on the naming - that's your test computer. Your backup computer is part of the production system thus should have both that treatment and credit.
I know this problem only arise in larger networks but in pre 10.9 environment that's just one 5 min downgrade so it shouldn't be a problem even though you did the untested upgrade on your mainframe. The ARD client is of no concern (this time at least) so there is no deploy issue.
It's only when OSX 10.9.0 and ARD 3.7.0 admin meet you have a real problem as you are on thin ice downgrading. If that's a test fleet it wouldn't be of any concern but if that's someting you rely on I'd definately say that the largest problem is the strategy of the admins. Two .0 mistakes in an important computer is a system error and that strategy is a ticking bomb.
I mean when software is proven fine on the test fleet the next step should be to put it on non important computers. Those are the ones nobody depends on and I was now talking about 10.9 in particular. Home computers are good because you get well exposed of them and your also have close relationship with the users who will not be afraid to give you the slightest flaw right in your face.
3.7.1 seams better as the computers doesn't flip around (so far) but the IP:s are still strange.
ifconfig the client and it will tell you what you see in 3.6.x but what you read in 3.7.1 admin is still fantasy. At least you adress the correct computer sending unix commands or want to monitor/control it even though the IP is wrong. Too early to tell but that's what I have found during the first day.

  • 2.01 Did not fix long backup bug for me.  What do I need to do?

    Hi,
The update has not corrected the long backup time bug for me. Started a backup 30 mins ago and based on the progress bar it will run for at least another 2.5 hours. I don't understand how it can take that long to backup less than 8GB of information. Do I need to change a setting or delete old iTunes backup files to get this process working correctly. Most of the other bugs I encountered with version 2.0 seem to be resolved but this backup bug is a time waster. Do I need to take the phone and my mac to the Apple store and have them look at it?
    Thanks,
    D

You can cancel the backup process by hitting the x in the progress window and it will go directly to the sync if it is taking it too long.
