(long) Stuck button after minor drop - seems to be a problem for many

And it won't go away. I visited iPhone Feedback and sent the following; I thought I'd share it here, too:
The phone is beautiful in its simplicity and is easy enough to use that even my octogenarian grandfather was able to navigate and use it with ease. With that in mind I have a few points:
1. No MMS? According to the rep I spoke with at the Apple Store in Jacksonville, FL for item #3 below, the iPhone is a SmartPhone-class device; however, every other smartphone on the market with a camera is MMS-capable. Surely Apple has the engineering know-how to write an effective MMS application that preserves bandwidth (think: auto-optimization of iPhone camera images when sending). Having to hop back and forth to see the username/password for MMS messages sent to my number in order to see what cute thing my new niece is up to when my sister sends me pictures is, quite frankly, an unnecessary pain in the butt.
2. Custom ringtones. I have CDs that I have legally purchased from non-RIAA and DiY labels and have created a few custom, 2 second MP3 ringtones that I am fairly attached to. I have actually spoken with bands on these labels and asked if they minded my ringtones (played back on my old Razr v3) and they were honored that I would create ringtones from their music for other people to hear. My wife carries a Sony/Ericsson W600i and can play my ringtones, my old Motorola Razr v3 played my ringtones; in fact, most every other phone on the market will play my custom MP3 ringtones (Motorola's mobile Phone Tools software even contains a ringtone editor). While having ringtones available via iTunes is nice and convenient, I will not buy iTunes ringtones because of this policy and am less likely to buy any music from iTunes because of policies like this. Please value your customers more than you value an industry that is looking for more ways to squeeze blood from turnips.
3. Durability. For Christmas this year, my 3-year-old daughter broke her arm. While she was proud of her pink, princess cast, this is an experience I would rather not relive. Her cast was removed two weeks ago and she is required to wear a brace and avoid falling. This past weekend, after getting out of the family car at my mother's house my daughter fell (as three-year-olds sometimes do) and, without a 2nd thought, I bent to pick her up and check out her arm. As I bent down, my iPhone fell from my shirt pocket onto the asphalt and hit right on the power button. This 2.5' - 3' fall bent the case enough to trap the power button in the depressed position and severely limit my use of the iPhone. I have discovered that with the phone plugged in to either the charger or a sync cable or with the iPod application playing, the phone will operate normally (with the exception of my being able to push the power button and put the phone to sleep). Otherwise, the phone shuts down and goes into a reboot loop, which to me seems quite natural given that the power button is always depressed.
I bought the phone with the knowledge that the application pool is not yet populated; with the SDK having not even been released. I am willing to wait on the improvements on 1 and 2 that I expect will come with time. 3 is a big sticking issue with me. I acknowledged my desire to protect the beauty and integrity of my iPhone by spending an additional 10% of the iPhone purchase price on a protective case. This case, made by Contour; however, makes the phone quite bulky and I occasionally find need to carry my iPhone in its original, intended, elegant, unadulterated form-factor. When carrying the phone without bulky protection, I do expect it to be durable enough, like every other "smart phone" on the market to survive the occasional, non-abusive, non-negligent tumble.
Contrary to the assertions of the Apple Store employee who told me that all "smart phone class devices" are fragile and not built to survive occasional drops, every other smart phone on the market is drop tested before release and free of engineering defects like the iPhone power button and too-fragile case that would render them useless unless their owners discovered that running the one application disabled the devices' sleep mode or keep them plugged in 100% of the time.
The Apple Store representative made it quite clear that, since issues like this aren't covered by my Apple Care plan and AT&T offers no equipment coverage on the iPhone, I was free to pony up $250 for a replacement phone and that this is my only option. This is not the service that Apple is known for. My simple, dinged case is not worth a $250 total-phone replacement. If I had abused the phone or rendered it a totally inoperable brick, $250 would be a more-than-reasonable, bargain-basement replacement price. $250 because of a dinged back case is unreasonably punitive and I am hoping that my appointment with one of the "experts" at my local Apple Store this evening will find a more consumer-friendly resolution.
Here's a potential solution: As a former Motorola PCS Engineering employee, I have the skills and tools necessary to perform case and component replacement on devices like the iPhone. There are people like me all over the country. If Apple offered an Apple-certified repair program with resources (people with skills and Apple certification) near Apple Stores where we could take or send our devices for simple (non-circuit) repair then Apple could restore the type of service consumers have heard Apple gives. I know I would easily part with $40-or-so (discounted 20% thanks to the Apple Care plan I purchased) to replace my iPhone's back case and preserve my warranty. No, Apple wouldn't make much off of the repair program but service is an investment in the customer well worth making.

Apple is no more what it was before. They don't care about people when changing a hardware, they are no more reliable. It's a shame.

• Server.policy seems to be a problem for many libraries.

I'm trying to play around with an app written with DWR and Hibernate, and the server.policy is getting in the way. I understand the reasons for it, but there should be (in my opinion) an easy way for one of two things to happen:
1) Turn off security altogether, assuming that the environment is "trusted." Most of the servers I've worked with that support security have an option for this; see Websphere, for example, which has a checkbox for security to be on or off.
2) Specify security policies in a server log that would relate the the security exception. For example, on a violation, the server might generate a log that says "for the error at 8/28/2005 @ 10:04 a.m., the security policy 'grant { ... }' would fulfill the requirements."
For libraries that rely on their own reflection capabilities, etc., this sort of thing would be drastically useful, moreso than requiring admins to find out exactly where in their filesystems a given jar is deployed so they can fiddle with security settings, hoping they got the right ones (and enough of them.)

For the first part of your post, please see http://docs.sun.com/source/819-0076/jvm.html#wp1031405
Steps copied from the above link --
To disable the security manager:
Go to the JVM Options page of the Admin Console.
For instructions, see Configuring the JVM Options.
On the JVM Options page, remove this option:
-Djava.security.policy
Click Save.
Restart the server.
Hope this helps.

• Quicktime Update Seems to Have Killed iChat for Many People

I keep seeing the same problem from so many people after the latest Quicktime update...
Everyone tries the 443 port setting, the Quicktime/Streaming speed setting, Internet sharing setting, etc. but something is definitely wrong, because I suddenly have two friends who now can't video when it was working fine before the update. And neither is using a router, so it removes all the potential router setting issues.
There seems to be many people on this board with the same issue.
BTW, the Apple "genius" actually suggested it was probably the camera that was broken, after they walked my friend through all the standard settings (the camera works fine). But I'm not going to bring that up because I'm reading A New Earth and that's just my own ego talking.
ANYWAY -- Ralph Johns? You've been dealing with this a lot - doesn't it seem like more than a coincidence that all these iChat issues keep recurring? Or am I insane?

It is more likely the Time Machine and Airport update than Quicktime.
This update changes the OS level although it still calls itself 10.5.2 it can not be "repaired" by installing the Combo version over the top. (you get and error message that the Installer and OS don't suit each other)

Disable "McAfee Site Advisor" extension which was just updated to 3.4.0, which probably took it out of the addons block list.
* "Ctrl+Shift+A" > find McAfee Site Advisor and use "Disable", and then restart Firefox.
* Do a Google Search no problem
* It seems that if you re-enable Site Advisor again, and restart Firefox you are okay. At least you know where to look if you get the error again or Google searches slow down.

You need to restore the iPad.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
If that will not work, you will need to use Recovery Mode to restore.

• IPhone 4 stuck in recovery after I dropped it. Not recognised in Itunes

I dropped my iPhone and since then it has been stuck in recovery mode. It shows the apple logo for approx. 10 secs then goes black, then shows apple logo for 10 secs in a continuous loop.
I have tried restarting the iPhone with the power key and home key pressed down and then plugging in the USB cable. This does result in the 'connect to Itunes' message. But iTunes won't recognise it (although it does cause iTunes to open).

• This may sound stupid but for some reason I can no longer use the return button after typing in a url to go to that site. Does anyone know how to fix this?

For some reason this stopped working on firefox a week or so ago. I have tried to uninstall and install firefox again but the problem still persists. I've tried both chrome and explorer and they don't seem to have this problem.
I'd hate to stop using firefox but this so annoying that in less i can fix it, i'll have to change my browser!

Hi larryhall,
I'd try starting Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit. You should look at the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting-extensions-themes Extensions and Themes troubleshooting guide ] and the [[Troubleshooting plugins]] article as well.
Hopefully this helps!

• I don't see the new "firefox button" and i can't see the bookmark button (with the drop down option) unless I'm in the customize toolbar view. How can I fix these?

I am using Firefox 4.0 on Windows XP home, Service pack 3. I am trying to use some of the new features of Firefox 4.0 that I see on the Firefox feature page (http://mzl.la/gCFDjj) and am not having much luck. First off in the Firefox Button. It is supposed to contain all your menu items but it is not appearing on my screen. Is this a feature that only works in Vista or Windows 7?
Second, I am trying to use the Bookmarks Button (the one that has the drop down menu) but it doesn't appear in my toolbar unless I right click the tool bar and choose "customize". The button shows up in this view already in the toolbar, as if it is hidden in normal use and no matter where I move it to, once I hit the "done" button in the customize window the Bookmarks Button gets hidden/covered up again.
Third, I see the new "App Tabs" feature but I can't seem to find an option for this in the preferences for Firefox, if it's even supported by my browser/OS at all.
Can anyone tell me how to use/activate these features or if I am even able to using Windows XP?

You see the orange (on Linux gray) Firefox button if the Menu Bar is hidden (View > Toolbars > Customize or right-click a toolbar).
If you need to access the hidden Menu bar then press F10 or hold down the Alt key to make the Menu Bar appear temporarily.
You only see the Bookmarks menu button if the Menu bar is hidden.

• (Mac Mail) How to obtain Yahoo! Mail when: You're inbox dissapears or does not show after all settings seem perfectly in place.

Hello everyone!
Note**: I am in no way attempting to illustrate how to get FREE email listing from Yahoo! Mail, I am only reciting what I have stumbled upon. I do not know if Yahoo! actually wants this to work in Mail. but it does, so if they didn't want it to work they will patch it or something. I recommend that you take advantage of their paid service(annual) which allows POP forwarding of emails quickly and withou any need for reconfiguration.
I hope this "fix" is not being rementioned or creates redundancy, however after hours of searching all sorts of foums(including the Apple forums ofcourse) I was unable to find a true fix. Simply put, I just got a brand new Macbook Air 13'' for Christmas 2011. I also bought a Macbook Pro 15'' back in late 2010. I was never able to get Yahoo! Mail configured even through methods of IMAP rather than POP or POP3. Oddly enough, on my Macbook Air and Pro, now, when I try to redo the Yahoo! settings, my Inbox would display messages for a matter of seconds and then the messages would dissapear. However, there was still a number next to my Yahoo! e-mail, accurately indicating how many unread messages I had. I fixed it like so:
1) Go to www.yahoo.com-- Configure Yahoo! account via account settings to work off of IMAP rather than POP Forwarding. Do so by going into account options on the top right or left hand of your screen and clicking through the forwarding options until you see IMAP. Make sure you save your new settings! This is very simple and I feel requires no further explanation. If you become confused, let me know and I will go into detail then.
2) Once your Yahoo! Mail account is IMAP simply go into the Mail application on OSX (Mac). On the top bar of the Mail pane click on the "Mail" option in between the Apple sign and File. Then, Click on Preferences from that dropdown pane. When this window appears, Click on the "@" symbol that says "Accounts" right under it. This is in between General and RSS options. Under the left-hand list that says "Accounts", click on the "+" sign as opposed to the "-" sign you will see there. This will allow you to setup an account or additional accounts. A window then will appear with options:
3) ****Make sure you ARE connected to the internet wirelessly or via ethernet for this part!****
---------- Full Name: (Enter Full Name Here)
---------- Email Address: (Type in full email address, e.g.: [email protected])
---------- Password: (Type in your password to your email account, this IS CASE SENSITIVE.)
4) Now! Listen! (lol), hit create and let the mac show you the settings it has pinged back from the Yahoo! mail server. It should illustrate that your e-mail is an IMAP based email address etc. As long as the account is created with the IMAP configuration and Mail reads it as so, you have succeeded thus far.
5) Critial Step here: Go into the Mail application on OSX (Mac). On the top bar of the Mail pane click on the "Mail" option in between the Apple sign and File. Then, Click on Preferences from that dropdown pane. When this window appears, Click on the "@" symbol that says "Accounts" right under it. This is in between General and RSS options. Under the left-hand list that says "Accounts", click on the Yahoo! IMAP account. Close to the top of that page between the different Mail options and the account settings you will see three different bar pages: a) Account Information, b) Mailbox Behaviors and c) Advanced.
6) Click on the Advanced tab. Do not touch anything on this page, except, IMAP Path Prefix. This is located in the middle of the Advanced page screen right above Port, where you will see |Port: 993 (Box IS checked for: USE SSL). In that IMAP Patch Prefix type the name of your Inbox(I say this because some people rename it in Yahoo!). Mine is simply "Inbox" so my configuration in Mail looks like so: | Imap Path Prefix: Inbox |. After this, click on "General" or attempt to close the Mail options window and it will as you to save the new setting. Ofcourse, hit yes and click the Get Mail envelope and you will see your Inbox populate, assuming you have new mail.
What this means: Test your OUTGOING mail server by sending yourself an e-mail either from your Yahoo! Mail or from another email. Thus, this will allow you tot est your INCOMING email as was now reconfigured to IMAP by seeing if you actually receive the email.
Reason for doing so in this sequence: By letting Mail create the account it will properly import all of your mail folders you have in your Yahoo! Mail account. Obviously, your Inbox and Outbox as well as Sent and Trash folders will import but I have additional folders, for example, that also imported for putting financials or receipts into different folders for organization. Once these are populated naturally, by changing the IMAP Path Prefix you're telling the Mail application where to send your new emails. Atleast this is my understanding of it.
Unfortuntely, I am not an officially educated 'techie", however, I have been fiddling with computers over the last 20 years and have been training myself to become Apple expert, seing as I have decided to completely convert to Apple products. Apple is just reliable. This, to me, is priceless. I truly hope I have helped you and that I have saved hours of Youtube video watching as well as forum searching for many. Should you have any questions, FEEL FREE to ask! I love helping others, hense why I have made this post(my first Apple post). Happy Holidays everyone and enjoy!

What Mac Mail did was delete ALL inbox messages from my yahoo account, after one week from importing them to Mac Mail.
The Yahoo server did exactly what you Mail program told it to do.
Mail/Preferences/Account/Advanced - This setting is adjustable for each mail account.
I didn't know about this feature until it was too late. I have already unchecked it for future emails.
I was wondering if there is a way to retrieve these deleted messages back to my yahoo inbox.
Not Really, you could forward them to your account, after you've told your mail program not to delete the emails at all, but they will show up as being from you instead of the original sender. The originals at Yahoo have been dumped and probably purged. It would take an IT manager at Yahoo to manually replace the emails, not much chance of that.
I've already asked yahoo to "restore" my inbox to a day ago. That should help me with retrieving some of the messages back, I hope.
Also, I was wondering about the sync feature on the Mac Mail and what will actually happen if I use it. Does it apply to mail messages, or to address book and calendar entries?
The sync feature refers to IMAP email accounts like .Mac or .Me or an Imap gmail account. I didn't think Yahoo offered IMAP email accounts.
Apple's MobileMe membership will let you sync your Mail, AddressBook, Calender, personal website with iWeb, etc.
"MobileMe is a service that pushes new email, contacts, and calendar events over the air to all your devices. So your iPhone, Mac, and PC stay in perfect sync."
http://www.apple.com/mobileme/
I wanted to use Mac Mail, see if I liked it or not, then decide to get a MobileMe account. However, this is still a side note, since my yahoo account is my main email client.
You seem to be very well informed, and I was wondering if I can ask you to clarify a point for me. Do you know how to archive the inbox in the Mac Mail?
And thank you for answering my queries.

• No longer able to drag and drop files to an iPhone in iTunes.

I accidentally unplugged my iPhone 3G before it was finished syncing in iTunes and I lost all of music, playlist, podcasts, etc. I had copied to it. The problem I am now having is that I can no longer drag and drop anything to my iPhone in the Devices list. The only way that I can now get files onto it is by syncing with my existing play lists, etc from iTunes. I can't even select it in the Devices list and create a new playlist on it by clicking the new playlist button at the bottom. I really liked the option to just drag whatever I wanted onto it. It's really a pain now. It does sync properly, so thankfully that works.
Does anyone know why I know why I'm no longer able to drag and drop music, etc. to an iPhone in iTunes.
Thanks

Man, I can't believe it...that was the fix. I had it checked previously, obviously because that's how I was doing it before. Don't know how it got unchecked, but that IS the solution. I thought something bad had happened and wasn't thinking clearly – feel like an idiot now.
THANKS for you help.

• ITunes no longer displays CDs after latest install

I've seen similar older questions, but I haven't seen an answer that works yet.
I Just installed latest iTunes SW (12.1.x?) on 2/28/15. Now iTunes does not display (or ask to display/import) a CD when I insert one (or have one inserted). (My preferences are still set to ask to import a CD when inserted.) iTunes has the same issue with both of my drives. Windows Media Player can play CDs from either drive just fine - so its not a problem with the drives. When I run iTunes diagnostics, iTunes recognizes my drives and gives them both 'green' status... however - they still don't show up in iTunes (when CDs are in them). iTunes seems to be working fine other than this. (I'm able to sync to my devices, play songs, etc.)
There's an articles I found on trying to repair 'missing drives' (iTunes for Windows: Optical drive is no longer recognized, or "Disc burner or software not found" alert after install - …) And I tried the steps here even though its not exactly the same issue. (I removed than 'reinstalled' the latest Gear driver; I verified I don't have either of the afs.sy, afs2k.sys conflicting drivers.)
I'm running Windows-7 64-bit.
I have not tried to uninstall/reinstall iTunes... [yet].
Anyone having the same issue?

Thank you so much for your responses. I greatly appreciate it. I wish Apple was as responsive as you. I also wish it was easier to find out how to actually file a bug report with them.
My first PC was back in the 80's. I made sure to have a 5.25" floppy drive since 3.5" was still new. It was a fancy PC back then, with the 3.5" on my A: drive and 5.25" on B:.... Styling. The PC I run iTunes on now is about 4-5 years old, (about 25 years newer than my first one) and has up-to-date BIOS, Windows 7, etc. I built it myself with whatever was pretty much top-of-the-line at the time.
I don't doubt that even Windows 7 still has some ancient A;/B: drive issues lurking about. I was nervous about that when I changed my optical drive letters to use them a month ago. No other software, including Windows Media Player, had any issue, so there didn't seem to be a problem. I feel like I'd ripped a CD into iTunes since I changed the drive letters, but I must not have. Unfortunately I updated iTunes right before trying to import a new CD I just bought, which led me to believe the update was bad... especially after seeing several 'similar' issues from other users who updated to iTunes 12.1.1.4 (including your original comment). I suppose my bad, for not fully checking out using the old reserved drive letters when I changed them.
I still consider this an Apple iTunes bug (even though I'm sure there's plenty of blame to share with Windows). Since ALL my other software is fine with the drive letters there's no reason iTunes - as big as it is - shouldn't also be. AND there's no reason iTunes shouldn't warn about this when Run Diagnostics is run from iTunes. Run Diagnostics DOES recognize the A:/B: drives, but does NOT report any error on it. This would have been no issue at all if their diagnostics software identified that iTunes still has an issue with the historic drive letters instead of just reporting that everything is OK.
Hopefully Apple browses through these forums. I 'think' I found a place to report the BUG to them last night, but they don't make it easy to find that through their contact pages that kept bringing me back to the phone number web page. (Sorry for the rant... I'm just frustrated cause I wasted so much time on this, and even more time on my previous issue with iTunes stealing some music from me that I had purchased and saying i didn't own it any more even though I still have all the receipts... I'm really about to give up Apple completely - I already moved to Amazon for digital downloads due to Apple's music theft.)
Anyway I'll consider this issue closed when Apple fixes it (either by accepting the old reserved drive letters, or by updating their Run Diagnostics)... in the meantime, I have an easy, though undesirable, workaround in using alternate drive letters.
Again. Thank you for your help. Your responses helped push me to find the real issue and a workaround. I truly appreciate it.
