Is this normal storage behavior?

I knew I'd need to transfer some files off-drive soon but the space I knew I had was suddenly evaporated and I was faced with the "Disk Full" error. As fast as I could delete documents the space freed was being used up even though all apps that could be downloading anything I'd already quit. I'm talking about nearly fifty gig. of space.
I wonder if those who know how to read the console logs might find anything meaningful in these lines? I'd be thrilled with help solving this mystery.

Hi Joey:
Thank you for your reply.  Yes multi pathing is in place and failover does occur.  This was my test environment I did first.  I just noticed that of three hosts two reported redundancy link lost (which is normal) but one showed redundancy link and the managment network lost and access to the datastore for VM guests although VM guests continuded to ping normally.  The host however was not pinging in fact as being reported.
Anyway,  I went forward with production last night and all went as expected with only redundancy link lost during interconnect updates/reboots.  No problems.  So, I believe my test environment has a connection between the two interconnects switched around from when I first set it all up.  There have been some others working in my test area.
Thanks again,
Fred

  • When I close Firefox 4.0 RC2, I have four or more instances of "plugin-container.exe" spawn before Firefox (and all of the spawned processes) close. Is this normal/intended behavior?

These processes seem to be independent of the normal plugin-container process spawned for Flash.

Probably the easiest way is to download Firefox again from http://www.mozilla.com and re-install it.
If you want to disable plugin-container, see the section on "Disabling crash protection" at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin-container_and_out-of-process_plugins

  • Is this sleep light behavior normal w/ a MacBook Pro?

This is the deal. I just purchased a new MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel core 2 Duo and I've noticed that the 'sleep light' comes on and stays on when I have my Cinema Display plugged in with the laptop cover closed down (so, therefore, I'm using just the external monitor, not the MBP's screen). It isn't 'sleeping' (it's not pulsing in and out as it does when it goes to sleep), but the light comes on steady whenever I close the lid regardless that the MBP is completely awake and being used with an external monitor.
I also noticed that while I was in the process of migrating data from my powerbook to the MBP, when the screen went dark (non-activity) over time, though the computer was transferring data via firewire, that when the MBP screen did go dark the sleep light immediately turned on. When I moved the mouse or touched a key of course the screen came back and then the sleep light went out. I was very surprised with this. IS THIS NORMAL FOR A [brand new] MACBOOK PRO? Did apple change things from how the PowerBooks were set up?
With my powerbook, the sleep light only comes on when it's ACTUALLY SLEEPING and then it pulses. It doesn't come on steady when the lid is closed. So this is quite different from what I'm used to and want to know what is supposed to be happening with the MBP.
The MBP goes to sleep properly in the various situations I've put it in. So far it functions properly. Except for this sleep light issue. And after doing some reading here I found there to be a number of issues with the MBP's 'sleep' and/or power management systems. And I'd like to know from other MBP users - Is this steady sleep light normal when the laptop screen is 'not in use' tho the computer is still ON and working?
Anyone notice any of these things as well? Your timely responses are much appreciated. I decided to ask here first, as I often find other users as knowledgeable and helpful as any resource out there. Thanks in advance.
BTW, and this is a side note: But I didn't install the battery update (I think it's 1.3?) for my MBP because of the scores of issues I've read about it thus far. Your thoughts on installing the update are also appreciated, if you have any.
    Regards, Elizabeth

You have a macbook pro too (as noted), does this happen with yours? If apple changed things and it's normal, like as you stated that it was lite so you'd know you're computer is 'on' but I'd like to know for sure if that's what it's supposed to be doing. (nip it in the bud if there's a problem)
I know it isn't sleeping (not pulsing) but since the light is on (steady), it is something I noticed right away. For example, right now as I type this, with the MBP on my desk w/ the cinema display plugged in (w/ a keyboard) and the lid is closed on the MBP, the light is ON right now. Not pulsing, but a steady light. Doesn't seem like it should be, to me. (at least in my view)
    Thanks for your reply Josh.

  • IWork apps all stall irresponsive with lion. Is this normal behavior?

All iwork apps, either eat more then 1gb (each) of RAM or stall irresposive since I installed Lion. They stall with copy-paste, or apha selection, or just when opening. Is this normal? Looking forward for a fix.

    Hi Steve,
While I can't fully answer your question, maybe I can point you in the right direction.
The network connection iWork applications make at startup is a query for new help content.
This seems like a useful function to me, so I don't know if you'd want to investigate disabling it or not, but apps loading slowly is never fun!
If you can't get your Network Administrator to fix the problems with using Macs on your network, I'd look around for something to do with non-permanently disabling this function through a .plist edit. I know that's what you're doing already, but maybe knowing what function it is you're after will help you find what you're looking for!

  • About This Mac Storage shows wrong size

    Hello, the story so far
    Actions:
    - MBA early 2014 (128GB) maverick updated to yosemite in November 2014
    - fresh install of Yosemite via wifi in January 2015 - followed instructions as suggested here http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14243
    Consequences after fresh installation:
    - About This Mac > Storage shows total hard disk size 120GB, About This Mac > Storage shows 110GB
    - About This Mac > Storage shows approx 9GB of apps. The actual applications folder size is far, far, far less than 9GB as showed in Terminal.
    - About This Mac > Storage shows approx 1GB of data for videos, audio and photos. There are no photos, video, documents stored on MBA.
For the records, no device data was sync after fresh installation and the trash is being emptied securely.
I am new to MAC so I would be grateful if you could help me understanding why About This Mac > Storage is showing more data stored than Terminal and Finder and what I should do to rectify the discrepancy.
Many thanks of your understanding and support.
    Cheers, puzzled_me

Kappy, may thanks. No difference, Get Info for the folders returns same data size as About This Mac > Storage
On a different note I have noticed that there are two Library folders under harddrive. See screenshot attached.
System/Library (6.8GB) folder contains subfolders that are also contained under Library (2.7GB) folder.
Could that be the problem?? Is that normal to have two Library folders??
    Thank you for your help.

  • Using OS10.7, my hard disc is full. When I go to "About this Mac - Storage" almost all of the HD is occupied by "Other".  Does anyone know what "Other" is so that I can remove some of it?

Using OS10.7, my hard disc is full.  When I go to "About this Mac - Storage", it shows that it is entirely filled with "Other".  Does anyone know what "Other" is so that I can delete some of it?

First, reboot. That will temporarily free up some space. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root.
First, back up all data if you haven't already done so. No matter what happens, you should be able to restore your system to the state it was in at the time of that backup.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

    William Lloyd wrote:
Yeah you shouldn't use ~ in general. That is a shortcut for "Your home directory."
This is not strictly true. ~ is a "meta-character" in Unix shells -- it is an instruction to the shell to substitute the path to a home directory. It only has meaning in a Unix shell command, and only if ~ is the first character in a file path name. Outside of a Unix shell ~ has no special significance (although other programs might adopt a similar convention).
I don't see any reason why Aperture would be doing tilde expansion, and if it is, it is doing it wrong. "March~May Asia Trip" is a perfectly legitimate name in both Mac OS and in Unix. There is nothing taboo about using ~ in a file name. This behavior (which I can confirm) is almost certainly an Aperture bug.

  • Apple TV I have to re-start after every power outage.  Is this normal?  I have gen 3

After all power outages.  I have to re-set my Apple TV.  Is this normal?   I have had this device for 8 months and its become a pain!

Many thanks guys for the response. there are still problems that i didn;t put here: 1: Storage (USB) is really slow; 2: Config restore is not working (I used to think this is not a problem while i changed my mind after reading some of the search results of the product); 3: Device will get back to work after power outage ONLY if you leave everything to be factory default, as long as you changed ANY setting, you lose your connection after power break. I will return this piece, and go back to D-link. I bought this router for my boss and i can not afford losing my job because of it. Sorry for this decision in Linksys forum, but, it leaves me no choice.

  • IPad 3 gets really hot. Is this normal?

My ipad3 gets really hot while using...is this normal?

I actually have this problem with an old iPad. I have used it for over 3 years, and in the last few weeks, both my wife's iPad and mine have started getting very hot during extended use. I don't see anything in the discussion, but is this a function of IOS 8.0.2, rather than dependent on the iPad? I cannot say for sure we noticed it right at the time we did the OS upgrade, but it seems like it was about that time. Just to be really clear, the heating is recent behavior. It did not happen for the first 3 years we had our ipads. Now they get so hot we cannot keep using them on our laps after 20-30 minutes. And is is not the weather or ambient temperature. It happens when it is 65 F. Have not been able to find out why, or how to limit whatever processes are generating the extra heat.
also, battery life got shorter. Probably because so much energy is turning into heat.

  • Charger gets really hot. Is this normal?

    Hey,
When I use the wall charger (stock that came with the phone), it gets really hot (about 160 degrees Fahrenheit) when it's been plugged in for a while (i.e. when I charge my phone from about 50% or below to full). This has been a problem since I bought the phone (4 months ago). Also, if I smell the USB ports on the charger when it's hot, I can smell a faint "short-circuit smell." Is this normal, or should I try to get a replacement charger from Verizon?

Hi pattiobear! I'm very concerned after reading your description of issues relating to the charging of your Droid RAZR Maxx. No, these are not normal behaviors. If your device is not physically damaged, I recommend replacing it. If you have not yet gotten this matter resolved, please "follow" Dion M through this forum so that I can reach out to you via Direct Message. Thank you!

  • CPU REACHES 99 DEGREES CELSIUS ON 100% LOAD IS THIS NORMAL?

Hi, i have a HP ENVY 15-j171nr and evrytime i run a cpu intensive program where it puts the cpu to 100% load, My cpu temperature jumps to 99 degrees celsius and stays there. Is this normal? of could i have a bad heat sink? Intel rates the CPU (i7-4700k) to 100 degrees celsius.

    Hi Sorrentino,
    This is normal behavior.

    I am an HP employee.

  • Is this normal behaviour?

I close the lid of my macbook pro, it goes to sleep pretty much straight away (the indicator starts breathing), I put it in my bag and head off.
When I take it out of my bag a few hours later, the power is off, and it wont turn on - I guess it woke up in my bag and ran itself out of battery (I know this should NOT happen but is quite common, this isn't the behavior I'm querying about).
So I connect the AC adapter to my mbp, the little light on the adapter tip goes orange (charging). When i switch on my mbp the screen goes that light blue/grey whatever it is... but just freezes, it doesnt even do the very first chime.
I switch it off again, and let it charge for about half an hour, then switcheit on, and the same thing happens! Wont get past the initial light screen BEFORE the chime.
I let it charge over night, and now I can switch it on.
Is this normal? I.e. when the battery is fully drained, can you not run the MBP off the AC?

i have to agree about the odd behavior regarding the mbp waking while closed. it seems like i notice this too. one thing i thought of is the power settings- if they are set to wake or whatever at a certain time.
i don't know about your issue on restarting (failure of it). in my case when i was dead from no power, it seems to start with the power plugged in. BUT i do have issues similar but differant than yours.in my case if the mbp doesn't start at tht point i have to do a HARD restart- and just hold the power button down. this may not be related to the charge/power. but more like the sleep state locked up the system. my screen stays black and will either show the spinning wheel, or noththing. so similar but a different scenario than yours.
one big question is WHY if they are asleep are they waking?
related point: if it can wake while closed, why can't we purposely keep the mbp running while closed? LOL
seriously though, i know people say to preotect the HD while carrying the laptop etc. BUT ther are so many times when i want to close the mbp while running!! like playing itunes to a stereo- i don't want o keep the mbp open, and i just want to set it on the table or something. BUT I want to keep playing music. or perhaps close the lid, while doing a 20minute virus scan, or close the lid while other stuff. but i don't want to leave the lid open while doing any o fthese things.
seems odd, if the mbp can wake on it's own while closed, why can't we keep it awake while closed?

  • HT1363 Got iTunes 11.0.2 and iPod classic. ITunes no longer connects to iPod - wiped all contents and there is no way to re-connect - is this normal?

Got iTunes 11.0.2 - as far as I know the latest version. My iPod classic no longer connects - gone through all on the "help" still won't work. There is nowhere with the word "device" and the iPod has now been wiped clean. Is this normal with the new version?

You might want to try connecting to another computer with an older version of iTunes. If it connects, reformat it straight away just in case before adding your songs back in. Otherwise, you might want to seek for help at the official iTunes stores in your country. Chances are that the iPod might be corrupted, though iTunes being the problem can't be ruled out either.

  • Battery and Sleep issues. Is this "normal"?

Hey guys, ever since day 1 My new MBP has been experiencing the sleep issue where in sleep the battery would lose about 1-2%/hour. I would go to sleep with the battery at 100%, and wake up to only about 87%. Also, when it was new the battery had about 4650 for full charge capacity, now its showing only 4540 after 10 cycles!!! Is this normal? Please help my MBP is less than 2 weeks old I have owned the previous MBP model, and the battery life during sleep was considerably better than this, and also it took less time to charge the battery!
