Long time to burn a DVD?

I'm new at this burning DVD's but why does it take over 40 minutes to burn a DVD on iDVD with only 5 minutes of content.
Thanks for any insight
Mac Pro 2.66 GHZ, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Patience is the key. It's not quite like making a cup of coffee even tho the playback is only 5 mins. long.
I do have a suggestion tho if you don't require fancy menu's, titles, or slide shows.....
just use a set top dvd recorder with firewire/ i.Link / digital interface where you can copy your minidv video footage directly to DVD-R media in real time! No encoding times required since it does it on the fly. I use a Daewoo DVD Recorder DVR07 .....works like a charm .....and it plays flawlessly on my mac or pc.
You can set it from the start to make an automatic menu at any time interval/s you wish...every 5 mins, every 10 mins, 15 mins., etc. (up to 8 hours on a standard DVD-R/W disc). Did I mention it can also write in sessions (as opposed to write at once)? Meaning if you want to add content to the DVD at a later time, then you also have that option.

  • Time to burn a DVD?

This may be the wrong forum for this question, but I believe it's Mac specific, and I don't know where else to post it.
Using TiVo transfer (part of Toast 8), I transferred some programs from my TiVo disk to my Mac. I'm now in the process of writing two of these programs to a DVD (~3.12 GB total) . . . but the process is incredibly slow! I estimate that it'll take well over two hours to complete!
Under "disk burning," my System Profiler says "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J." Should it take over two hours to burn a 3-GB DVD-R (NTSC format)?
    Thanks.

You aren't clear as to what type of DVD you are burning, it depends, as the other poster mentioned above.
If you are just burning data files to make a computer DVD data disc, I don't think it should take more than 2 hours, depending on speed, it should be probably around 15-30mins +/-
If you are burning a DVD video disc that will play in a DVD player, then the encoding can take a very long time with high CPU usage during the encoding process. In my older slower computer it may take overnight easily to encode that much video. If I want more than one copy, I usually burn to disc image, so that the second DVD doesn't have to repeat all that encoding again.
Can you see the DVD drive burn activity lights come on during that 2 hours? I expect the acutal burn hasn't even started yet, that the DVD video files are still being created. Doesn't Toast give you some progress feedback or status as to what particular phase it is working on? Any messages about encoding...?

  • IDVD, long time to burn

I have imported some old movies from an 8-mm film. After i imported the film-which is 30G in size- i tried to burn the movie with iDVD. iDVD would get to stage 3 and after about 1 hour iDVD was still at stage 3, so i cancel and tried again, same problem. I'm i doing something wrong or does iDVD take this long.-Thanks Dave

Long time! You don't have in your profile what kind of computer you have, amount of RAM, speed of processor, etc. so it is impossible to guess what your computer will take. But to give you an example, I run iDVD v4 with a 1.25GHz G4 eMac running 1 Gig of RAM. It takes my machine from start to finished DVD about 3-4 times as long to complete as the project is. In other words, if I have a 1 hour movie I am putting on DVD, it takes my setup about 3-4 hours to do the task.

  • Long iMovie to burn on DVD

Is it possible to burn my lengthy imovie (1hour 38mins) onto a single DVD for viewing on standard PAL DVD players? If not, how can I split my 'exported' imovie into two halfs in imovie edit mode, without the risk of losing half my movie? Please can anyone help?

  • HT1583 When burning a DVD of photos and music from iDVD, the photos blur right before the transitions and the music has about 5 second glitches here and there before the music starts again. Is there any way to burn the DVD without this happening?

Each year I am in charge of making a slideshow of photos and music for my annual company meeting. I always use iDVD to set up my photos and music and then burn the DVD to play at the meeting. Every time I burn the DVD, it blurs right before the transition of the photo. It has always done this and I'm not sure why. It will also make the music glitch in a few spots for about 5 seconds or more. If I burn another DVD to try it again, the glitches will still be there, but in different spots. I've tried the highest quality of DVD's possible and this still happens. What can I do to fix this problem?

    Try disabling transitions altogether!
There is a technical reason that this breakup happens - it is to do with how slideshows can be saved within the DVD specification, they can either be recorded as 'video streams' or as a collection of 'still images'.
When you add transitions iDVD has no option but to use a video stream, this can result in terrible 'breakup' because the mpeg 2 encoder isn't designed to handle scenes that are static with a sudden short change. You can see 'artefacts' in the video stream…
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compression_artifact
'Still image slideshows' avoid the issue altogether by only showing a static image, no video compression is used & because the scene doesn't transition so it shouldn't breakup.
NOTE: Music on the slideshow is irrelevant, both types can use a soundtrack.
I cannot remember if it is possible to force iDVD to only make still image slideshows, I always use DVD Studio Pro to correctly setup DVD's. I'd suggest you use the option to save the DVD to a disk image & then open that disk image so that DVD Player can preview it, that should save on the number of test disks you burn.
If you cannot make it avoid using video streams you may be ether off making your own video slideshow in iMovie & then import that into iDVD. It may eventually look better despite being a video stream!
iDVD isn't really condusive to professional levels of control.

  • Burning a dvd h264 versus pro res 422?

Hi everyone, I have a "film" project I put together.  It is comprised of many mini scenes and clips.  For each clip I have exported (FCP 6.06) an H264 (720x480) version and a Pro Res 422 (HQ) version.  The Pro Res was better for editing and the H264 was better for uploading to the intrawebs.  Both versions play just fine, but now it's time to burn to DVD.
I was not going to burn a blue ray just yet, so a SD DVD should be just fine.  I was going to use Toast/ DVD Studio Pro on my mac 10.5.8 Os to make a DVD of all the clips. Will the Pro Res footage look better than the H264, or since its compressed to SD is it better to use the H264 footage?
    Thanks in advance

A DVD uses ALWAYS Mpeg-2. A DVD-Rom can take anything, it takes data.
Sound on a DVD is usually AC-3. Also, you have to decide on NTSC or PAL format, in your case (480 lines) it would be NTSC.
SD is not a compression, it just means NTSC or PAL as opposed to HD (720 or 1080 lines)

  • Poor quality (vibration) on video clips when it burns onto DVD

We created 15 mins video on Final Cut Express, saved on Quick Time, and burned onto DVD. Although the video on Quick Time was fine, some of the quality of the video clips on DVD we burned was so poor....It had so much vibration on some of the video clips. We tried on both Best Performance & Best Quality, but they both had poor quality. Do you have any suggestions? Do you think upgrading to I Life 08 will help? Please Help!!!! Thanks!

It had so much vibration on some of the video clips.
Video on a DVD is mpg-2 compressed (which looks at frame to frame differences in compression) and is interlaced.
If you have content with lots of movement - like many hand-held shots - mpg-2 compression and interlacing will act to create lots of 'jumping' or 'vibration'. The only solution is to use a tripod and avoid shaky, hand-held shots.
BTW, for a short clip, 'Best Performance' will give you the best quality you can get.

  • Encore CS5 will Only Burn One DVD At A Time

Hello All , I am having a problem that I didn't have with CS4 ,If I set CS5 to burn more than one DVD it shows a hardware error after the first one , If I set CS5 to burn one DVD it works every time I only burn at 8X .This is not a major problem because it doesn't take much longer to burn them one at a time
but it would be nice to know why .
    Regards
    Kevin

Thank's for your suggestion but I have always set CS4 to burn say 10 DVDs and just change the media when prompted (only 10 days ago) in CS5 this doesn't work only the first one will burn , I am sure there is nothing wrong with my hardware is works flawlessly with all other software.

  • Burn data dvd no longer works since 9.0.1 or 9.0

Since the latest iTunes update, at least 9.0 or 9.0.1, I am unable to burn backup DVD data disks which is my "offsite" backup method besides using Time Machine on an accessory drive. The DVD drive is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-109: Firmware Revision: 1.58. I get error messages, did not save the text, but usually read/write errors, "sense" issues usually cited after several attempts. However, seems to work fine burning from Toast and fine for burning iTunes Audio CDRW disks. Anyone else experience this? I see several having problems recently burning CD's from iTunes, but not this specific issue. I know it's nearly time to update my system to Intel, but it would be nice to hold on a little longer...I did try to force lower speed DVD writes with no help. Thanks...

  • Since iDvd is no longer supplied with Lion, what is best to use to burn to dvd for TV?

Since iDvd is no longer supplied with Lion, what is the best product to use to burn to dvd for TV from iMac?  Is there a free solution?

Thank you very much for the link.  I'm in the process of evaluating the trial version of a couple of products other than iDvd.  Since iDvd does not have a trial, I was wondering if you could answer a couple of questions.  Once I'm done, I plan on putting up the resluts of what I've found.  Work is very busy this week, so I probably won't get a chance to work on this much until next week.
Anyway, I'm importing movies from my Sony Handycam DCR-TRV20.  I've used iMovie to perform the download from the camcorder (the other products don't support this).  The other products can work directly on the imported .dv files without having to export things from iMovie as a .mov file.  I have not had time to see if there is a quality difference between a burned DVD with .dv clips vs. .mov imported from iMovie.  So my questions regarding iDvd are as follows:
Can iDvd work directly on .dv files, or do you need to import .mov from iMovie?
If iDvd can work with these files directly, is it easy to do things such as clip them and do affects on them?
Is there a quality difference when viewing a burned DVD if .dv files were used vs. imported .mov files?
Since I have later versions of the iLife products than what comes packaged in the iLife that contains iDvd, can you install only iDvd in what is purchased from Amazon?
Thank you very much is you know the answer to any of these questions.

  • Burning takes long time

Had a 44min project in FCP movie, 1st time encoded and burned in 2hrs. Made a minor change in the original via FCP, made new FCP movie (QTfile) and this time it encoded in about 1hr and now has been burning for 4hrs with no sign of letup. Should it take this long, given that the original burn was pretty fast?

I suggest you use a workaround which allows you to burn the DVD to hard disc and create the disc afterwards. It is known as Easter Egg or "Hurz and Pfurz" and is found on
    http://homepage.mac.com/geerlingguy/macsupport/mac_help/pages/15-burn_idvdother.html
Once you get this installed you can make DVD images which you can play using the DVD player in the applications folder and burn using Disc Utility.
It means that you use iDVD to run up to stage 3 when you then generate a disc image of the final DVD. You make your DVD by copying the image using Disc Utility, full instructions on
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724
but you just use the second half to burn the DVD. iDVD5 has this built in.
Your copies burnt by Disc Utility will take no longer than the disc length and may be reduced if your drive will burn at 2X or faster.

  • HT1645 whether i use a DL DVD or just a DVD R, it tells me there was an error during multiplexing.  I have tried changing every setting, best performance, professional quality, etc. and still get the same error message every time i try to burn to dvd.

whether i use a DL DVD or just a DVD R, it tells me there was an error during multiplexing.  I have tried changing every setting, best performance, professional quality, etc. and still get the same error message every time i try to burn to dvd.

    Welcome to the forums.
Looks like that error message does refer to encoding (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1645) but a problem could be that your video has to be reloaded into iDVD if you started the encoding process and then switched settings.  You could start a new iDVD project, or try deleting encoded assets.
Let's start from the beginning -- what length of video are you trying to fit on the DVD? (this will indicate what encoding options you have).  Double layer DVDs can be finicky and are used for video more than 2 hrs long.
Use good quality media -- Verbatim is often recommended around here, and I've used Sony DVD-R with good results.

  • HT203477 I've been trying to burn a DVD edited with FCP_X. I keep getting a "Quick Time Error 0" and my DVD doesn't burn. Why!

I have been getting a "Quick Time Error 0" when I try to burn a DVD even when using a dual layer DVD. The total length is only 2.5 hours long! I've been trying to burn this DVD for 2 months.

Can you tell us how and what does the burn.
    Step be step is useful.

  • How much time to burn DVD?

How long should it take to burn a DVD from a disk image? I have a project that is 30 minutes long, which played back just fine when viewed from disk image. The log shows:
    Preparing data for burn
    Opening session
    Opening track
    Writing track
    Closing track
    Closing session
It all looks good, except that "Closing Session" has been going on for almost two hours. I have not gotten any error messages; the only thing that the progress bar shows is the moving striped pattern.
I am using TDK disks (I know that is not one of the recommended brands) and am burning at 2X. I have used this successfully before and do not remember it taking anywhere so long. Should I quit the process and try another disk?

This is what "More info" shows under "disk burning". There was no listing of "s-drive".

    1. Try playing a commercial dvd. Does it play exactly as expected under apple's dvd player app? If so ....
Titanic and _The King of Queens_ get rejected multiple times. They don't show up at all on the screen, and there is no error message. TurboTax loads quickly without a hitch.
    2. Run apple's software updater if you haven't already and post which updates are recommended without installing them just yet. Let us take a look at the recommended updates prior to installation.
Here is the list. I have not downloaded any of the recommended updates because I was in the middle of working on the project that was being burned when this situation arose.
    GarageBand Update 4.1.1
    Keynote Update 4.0.2
    Pages Update 3.0.2
    Numbers Update 1.0.2
    iWeb Update 2.0.3
    Quicktime 7.5
    iLife Support 8.3
    Digital Camera Raw Compatibility 2.1
    Safari 3.1.2
    Security Update 2008-005 1.0
If your S-Drive or Burner is able to write to Dvd-R media but unable to read it then I suggest trying a quality dvd lens cleaner kit prior to calling apple's tech support.
Do you have a brand that you would recommend? Thank you for all your help.
