Looking for advise on workflow

I'm about to start a project where I want to take sequences from about 40 different projects and nest all the sequences into one master project. I'm assuming that all of the projects will have to be open to do this. My question is, will this slow FCP down? My thoughts are if i break it down into smaller projects and were to have unforseen problems, it would be better to have to rework 1 project than to lose 1 large master project. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks!

I'm assuming that all of the projects will have to be open to do this. My question is, will this slow FCP down?
No, you don't need all the projects open at at the same time (and yes, it would slow your machine down) ... just copy and paste the needed sequences from each of the projects into your new master project and close the original projects.
Alternatively, just identify and export your selects from each of the original projects/sequences and then import those selects into you new project as master clips

  • Overloading RV110W? Looking for advise.

I am using a RV110W for a small office and I am concerned the wireless traffic is overloading the router. I am looking for advise on upgrading the router, adding another or changing the settings.
I have two wired production servers connected to the router. One is to handle a small amount of incoming WAN traffic (a few data transfers 1MB per day), so the router is set to forward a single port to that server. Otherwise the rest of the WAN traffic is outbound.
There's a single SSID for five 802.11n clients. These clients are continuously generating tcp traffic to the other production server about 10 hours a day. Plus 1 wired client doing the same. Most of these transactions are less then a Mb but hundreds per minute. The wireless clients are mostly stationary so they are moving out of range.
One VPN connection being used in the off hours. This deployment was working well. No problems.
I recently added four 802.11n speakers and started streaming music from a wired workstation for the same 10 hours each day. This overloads the router. Now all the wireless clients are periodically dropping there 802.11n connection.
    1) What logging do I turn on to understand what is happening when wireless clients are losing their connection?
    2) What router settings might improve this deployment?
    3) If the router can't handle this much traffic, what to upgrade to? Or add another router? I was thinking that adding a 5Ghz network dedicated for streaming music would solve the dropped connections.

If you want a GUI then you can use VNC. The free Apple Remote Desktop client <http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/appleremotedesktop31client.html> has a VNC "server" built into it. That means you can enable it in Apple menu --> System Preferences --> Sharing and then set a VNC password there as well. Use a "client" such as Chicken of the VNC <http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/> to remote control your other Macs.
If you want a simpler but geekier solution then you can enable Remote Login in Apple menu --> System Preferences --> Sharing and then use the Terminal application to send the "softwareupdate" command to your Macs behind the scenes (no one will see this happening). To do this you would issue the following commands:
    1. *ssh admin@IPAddress* (where "admin" is an admin account on the remote Mac and "IPAddress" is the IP address of the computer you want to connect to)
    2. *softwareupdate -i -a*
This will install all available updates.
For more command line details you can type *man ssh* and *man softwareupdate* in the Terminal application.
    Hope this helps!

  • Contractor looking for advise for thinkpad selection

I'm a small business const. Contractor. Because of our current work load I am no longer able to keep up with my work in the home office. I am looking for a reliable laptop pc so I can work in the field. I am looking at the think pad line becuase of the known durability. I would like this to become my primary pc . Business tasks to be performed: quickbooks accounting software, proposals, contracts, spreadsheets, digital picture storage, 3D design software (so I would need higher end graphics). 15.4" screen. I would need it to hold up to some dust, heat ect... Within reason. I just need something reliable. Any advise would be greatly appriciated. Thank you. Nick

most of your needs can be catered for by a T510 with integrated GPU, but when you say you need to run 3D design software, what sort of software and what design would you need to do on it (how complex)?
If you manipulate large models and such then you maybe better off with the W510, but if it is relatively simple then T510 with the Nvidia GPU should be fine.

  • Looking for the perfect workflow on two computers and backup photo's and synchronize LR 5

I work on two computers. A workstation in the studio and a laptop. I have a harddisk inside the computer containing all photo's. I have a external disk to backup these photo's.
On the worksation LR catalog sits on a second internal disk. LR runs from another disk. (On the laptop LR runs and contains the catalog on the same disk)
When working on location I download my photo's to this external harddisk. I also use this external disk to work on my photo's on location (home) with my laptop. Back in the studio I sync the internal and external harddisks.
I work with LR5 on both the computer and the laptop. After synchronizing the harddisks I open LR and synchronize the folder(s) using " Synchronize Folder ".
The adjustments I made to the photo's are still there because LR stores these in the RAW files and I use " Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF, PNG and PSD files "
But the Virtual copies are not there. I understand why this is happening. I read all about exporting and importing Catalogs.
How can I synchronize the LR catalog?
For example. I worked on location. I imported the photo's to the external disk attached to the laptop. I worked on the photo's using LR on the laptop. The next day I want to work on them in the studio using my computer.
In order not to lose any adjustments and virtual copies I have te export the folder containing the new photo's and import them with LR on my studio computer. I have to include the RAW files in this export: " Export negative files "
    What is the problem?
So I will need another harddisk. Next the export takes forever. Then I have to import it again. Takes forever too. When I synchronize the harddisk (using synchronizing software) it goes very quickly. But I lose the virtual copies because the LR catalog cannot be synchronized .
I tried to export the new files as a catalog without "Export negative files" and then after synchronizing the harddisks import this catalog on the second computer.
    This is what happens:
LR does not see the photo's are already there. The option to import only the metadata is grayed out. It is not possible to tell LR where it should import the photo's. Then LR could see the files are already there and it only has to import the metadata changes.
Because I need to work on my photo's in the studio and on location this is realy a big problem.
I know I can work from a external disk on both computers. But that will slow down the workflow extremely because the catalog and the photo's are on the same disk. There are 261.216 photo's in this catalog. So export as a catalog back and forth is not a option.
Using Export As A Catalog also is a problem.
When I import new photo's from my camera (card) it is possible to tell LR where to store the files using a Date Format.
    I use YYYY / YYYY-MM / YYYY-MM-DD:
But when I want to Import From A Other Catalog and tell LR where to store the files it does not see the folder structure already exciting. This a root problem. So it will put the folders where I direct it to and then I have to move the new photo's manually to the correct folders.
If the folder already excists it cannot merge them. In that case I have to move the new photo's from each day into the appropriate folder for each day !
This folder structure is important for me because many older photo's are not taged, but are easy to be found by date.
I probably are overlooking something and the solution is very simple. But I cannot find it ...
QUESTION : can anyone tell me what would be the best workflow in my case ? And still have a fast system ?

Here's what I do with the laptop/desktop workflow. Dedicate an big, fast external drive and place ALL Photo's, LR's catalog and presets (set preferences to Store Preset's with Catalog). You have one drive that has all the data you need to access your images and database on any number of computers. All the computer needs is a working copy of Lightroom. Clone that external drive to the backup drive, a 2nd external. Make as many clone's as you wish (one offsite, one in a fire proof safe, one to take on location etc). When one drive has newer data, just clone that to the others, they are all now in sync. One catalog. One master drive. The drive has all images and necessary associated files LR needs to work with (the expectation is lens and DNG camera profiles, the later can be embedded into a DNG and is thus on the drive too).

  • Acrobat Pro 10 crashes on Mac, looking for advise

    Hello,
I have been having major issues with my Acrobat Pro 10 that I purchased as part of CS 5.5. Acrobat closes/ crashes immediately after a document is selected and will not display or open any document. This issue is starting to become quite a headache and would appreciate any feedback or advise anyone has.
Computer is a Mac book Pro, OS is 10.7.5
    Thank you,
    Benjamin

    Hi scout144,
Please try the following steps and let me know if that worked for you:
Delete all the files from following folders:
    [Home]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/SLStore
    [Home]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/SLCache
And, delete all files from following folder except cache.db
    [Home]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/AdobePCD
Then launch Acrobat and try to activate and check.

  • Looking for Relocation of Workflow Client 2.6

Does anyone know where the download file for Workflow client 2.6 has moved to? I have tried several ways and options to find the .zip file but no luck. Or if anyone knows of another place please let me know (not the US site)

I found it on the 10g (9.0.4) AS Client delivery. It is one of the installation options. It is also available on the 10g (10.1.0) AS Client delivery but a separate installation is not an option. On 10.1.0 Workflow Builder simply appears when the entire client is installed.

  • Looking for advise on home networking

    Hi
I have 3 main g3 mini towers + printer that are mine, plus alot of computer that I work on and sell that I would like to connect to a home network, I know I can hook my 2 main computers up with a cross over ethernet cable, but can I hook others up with that set up or do I have to add a router/network box so I can hook other computers to them?
What would my best choices be?
Also I just downloaded Camino and I just found out there is no spell checker, any one know where I could get spell checker for Camino?

    Hello Bill,
    Are you on cable internet?
There are two good wired options. Given the circumstances you describe, wired may give you a little more flexibility for the times you have a computer temporarily on the network. IMHO, wired is more secure, at least right now.
You can use a ethernet hub or a router. The hub just splits the lines; a router is more like a small computer that can assign IP addresses to any attached devices. We have a hub, although there's a router on the shelf that I'll get around to installing some day.
Our cable ISP allows up to three computers running on a hub and their support goes down to the individual computers. If you use a router, that's as far as they go, but you can have as many computers attached as the router allows. Check with your provider.
We have two eMacs, my Beige G3, and an old LaserWriter 4/600PS attached to a five-port hub. The fifth port goes to the cable modem. We use a LocalTalk-to-Ethernet adaptor to get the printer in, yet it's recognized even by the newest eMac running Tiger.
Generally, all the wiring for such an arrangement uses standard Cat5, or "patch" cables. Some cable modems require a cross-over cable between it and the hub. Ours does not. You probably have to check with the cable modem manufacturer to find out. I found the info in a box the cable installers failed to throw away.
This arrangement does not preclude having an older Mac on the network for file sharing and printing, assuming the mixed OS software suites allow it. At one point, we had three modern Macs plus an older 6200/75 without Ethernet on the wire. This was possible because the PhoneNet connector (really a serial-to-RJ45 LocalTalk adaptor) that was necessary to network the printer left us one "legacy" Port. The PhoneNet connector has two RJ45 ports; if only one is used, the other must be fitted with a provided terminator. Remove the terminator and there's the legacy port. The older computer could not use the wire for internet, but could hit the printer and share files.

I am trying to transfer files from my MacBook (source) running OSX 10.7.5 to my IMAC  (target) running OSX 10.9.1.  Machines connected by ethernet cable.  On Target machine I get "Looking for other sources" and on source machine I get "Looking for other computers".  Both have clockwise spinning wheel.
    Looking for advise.

If you are connecting the two computers directly to each other with an ethernet cable, you need a special "crossover" cable to swap the send/receive pins so the data sent from one computer arrives on the "receive" pins on the other end of the cable, not on the "send" pins that you get with a straight cable.
Incorrect, you do not need a special crossover cable. Any cable will do.

  • Looking for a new toy to help your editing workflow?  Try this!

I recently ditched my simple 2-button + scroll wheel mouse for a mouse on steroids: the Logitech G700.  What a difference!  It has 11 customizable functions that can be automatically activated depending on the program you're in!  So you can have a completely unique set of functions for Premiere, Photoshop, AE, Windows, etc, and each set will automatically/instantly be activated whenever that specific program/interface is the active one!
Here are my 2 layouts to give you some ideas:
    Premiere Pro Layout:
    Windows Layout:
You can even assign multi-step macros to keys.  For example, I set one of the keys to: Deselect clips + Add Default Video Transition.  So now, a single keypress will always apply my default video transition to the CTI, even if any clips were selected, just the way it worked in CS6 and I wanted it to keep working in CC!
If you're looking for a simple inexpensive way to improve your editing work, I highly recommend getting a programmable mouse like this one!  If anyone has any other hardware devices that help their workflow, please share so that we can all benefit from the knowledge.
    Cheers!

I am in the market for a new PC for my wife, and she will be inheriting the keyboard and mouse I am using now so I can get new ones. She picked these out to begin with since we were sharing a computer for a while so she will be happy with them.
That looks like a really great mouse. I may just have to take your advice on this one.
Although the newer version looks even cooler: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-G700s-Rechargeable-Gaming-Mouse/dp/B00BFOEY3Y/ref=dp_ob_tit le_ce
My wife would HATE that mouse, but since she will finally have her own again, I can get any mouse I want.
    Very cool. Thanks.

  • Looking for some RAW + JPEG Workflow suggestions

I'm looking for some suggestions on how best to organize my workflow now that I've started shooting with RAW +JPEG. I previously shot only in RAW, but the time spent in post-production was killing me. I've realized that for 95% of my shots that already have the correct exposure, white balance, etc, a JPEG photo is really all I need and saves me a ton of time. I've become convinced that editing every single photo from a shoot in RAW is overkill. I want to have the RAW versions, however, to rescue that occasional great shot where I unfortunately miffed the settings.
Through reading other posts here and experimenting, I've found that Aperture basically defulats to showing me only the imported RAW photos and that I need to click "New Version from Master JPEG" to see the JPEG version. This seems counterintuitive to the workflow I'd like to establish though. (i.e. I'm thinking it would be nice to see only the JPEG versions, and then only bring up the RAW version when the photo needs some serious correction).
I suppose I could highlight the entire batch of imported photos and select "New Version from Master JPEG" and then sort through each RAW/JPEG stack, but I'm still hoping there's a less cumbersome way. Anyone out there have any good workflow suggestions for this issue? I'm curious how other people out there deal with this issue in their workflow.
    Thanks in advance!

Try this - I do this as a matter of course:
-select all of the photos after importing them into a project
-create a new album from selection/call it JPG
-with all of the images still selected create new version from master JPEG. all of these should now be the album pick
-close all stacks, the JPEG will be the one showing up on top for that album.

  • Looking for Pre-Rendered Editing / Color Grading Workflow suggestions.

Looking for Pre-Rendered Editing / Color Grading Workflow suggestions.
All my material is rendered via RenderMan, our resolution is 1280x544, and our format is generally .exr in 32 bit space.
Our editor has been converting over to 32-bit tiffs, and using Apple Intermediate Codec for editing, mostly for speed concerns.
We need to re-vamp our workflow so that we can edit our footage, and then do color grading of the edit head to tail to smooth the look between scenes. We want to do this in Color, being fed by Final Cut Pro's timeline.
We want to keep our bit depth as high as possible when coming into Color.
My question is, does anyone here have any workflow suggestions for doing what I am talking about.
I wasn't sure if we should just export and EDL from FCP and try to get Color to load our single frames from that. Or if there is a special Quicktime wrapper we should be using, or converting our 32-bit .exr files into some other format more readily available for using in Color?
Any thoughts would be great, thanks in advance!

You're not going to get anywhere beyond 10-bit. That's it.
Try encoding to 10-bit LOG dpx if you need upscale RGB.

  • Looking for a Workflow-Checklist (plugin)

    Hello everybody,
I really like LR as my primary workflow-tool.
    What I'm actually looking for: a "workflow-checklist-plugin".
This plugin should be a plugin visible in the develop module of Lightroom.
It (the plugin) should show me a list of checkboxes (which I could define).
These Checkboxes contain the different steps of my LR-Workflow (to make shure that I don't forget one of them).
Also, the "TAG" Metadata of the photo should be edited within the plugins-windows (with this feature, there's no need to jump back to the library to add a TAG).
All data might be saved in the photos metadata.
To describe a bit more in detail what I mean, I generated a "sample picture"
Do you have any idea if there's somewhere such a workflow-plugin?
And: do you have any additional idea if it's possible to modify the TAG of a photo in the develop module (without jumbing back to the library)?
I should be glad about any suggestion as I just started a small project on freelancer and don't have a good feeling about the offers coming in ;-)
    Thanks for your help,
    regards,
    Marcel

    Hi everybody,
thanks a lot for your very helpful suggestions regarding the workflow.
Coming back to the plugin I'm looking for, here are four more examples to explain what I want to address with this "customizable checklist" in the devlop module of lightroom:
-identify all photos for batch processing in photoshop (HDR, stacking etc.) - one point on the checklist ("batch in PS") and a smart collection to filter all this photos would speed up this a little bit.
-identify all photos that needs a "batch" noice reduction. I.e. I have many photos for which I do the first noice reduction depending on camera model and ISO. With a checkmark at "batch noice reduction", these photos could be found easily in a smart collection (and would not be done twice).
-identify all photos accepted by "fineart gallery x". With a checkmark on the checklist and a smart collection showing all the photos with this checkmark, you could get a visual understandig of what (kind of) photos they've accepted (and what not).  This point probably is not a point for the development module only, of course, but for the library too. So, if the checklist could be shown in the library too, it woould be fantastic.
-identify all photos for which I transferred the copyright to somebody else (i.e. a client) or photos which I develop only once as an original (and which will never be pubished online).
Of course, all this could be done by using the "tag" field. Jumping back to the library, putting in some words in the tag (i.e. "PS-batch","HDR" etc.) would do this job too (that's how I do it today).
But a quick to "check/uncheck list" seems to be the faster way  (just my 2c).
And the plugin I'm looking for should only do one thing: speed up the work not done "with the camera at hand."
From my non-programmer-view, this plugin seemed to be not very complicated : extend the LR metadata and show a checklist to edit this metadata (nothing more ;-)
But I already learned that, within LR, this is not as easy as it seemed ;-)
As I initially wrote, I also posted a freelancer project for this programming and there are already applicants for this job but "I have to check if they really do have the competency needed" (I'm not very optimistic, that I'll find someone thru freelancer).
So, I'm still hoping that there is already a plugin doing this job or that it will be easy to develop this "show a list-plugin ;-)

  • Looking for screen to change Supplier User Registr.. workflow process name

    Hi,
The question relates to Supplier User Management.
Does anybody know if there is a page where you can pickup the workflow (the shipped one has internal name POS_REG) process name for supplier registration?
    Thank you.
    Anatoliy

    Hi Bala
What enhancements were you adding to the Workflow Reassign/Delegate feature, which included being able to add comments? A good idea is to look for any differences between how workflow implements the reassign feature, and your customization.
Also, make sure you only use the Public documented PL/SQL APIs and do not update the tables directly to ensure no Support or Upgrade Issues.
    Cheers
    Mark
I am using Stand alone Workflow 2.6, In my workflow process
which is an Issue tracking system which is working fine. On Enhancement I would like to create my own RE-ASSIGN function which will, Change the ownership of an issue totally to other user.
For this I Created a package(CHANGE_OWNER.CREATE)which will show list of Users and Comment field(Just like Re-Assign).
Here user can pick other user, and add comment,
once submit for that Item key I am updating the workflow notification table so that paritcular issue ownership will be changed.
In my workflow process I created a lookup code called "Change Owner". On click of Change Owner it will call the Function
in workflow process which will call CHANGE_OWNER.CREATE, here
the workflow process supposed to wait and get the User to be
changed. BUT THE PROCESS IS NOT WAITING, IT JUST DISPLAYED THE
SCREEN AND CONTINUED THE WORKFLOW PROCESS. I WANT THE MY
WORKFLOW PROCESS TO BE ACT AS RE-ASSINGN BUTTON WHICH WILL WAIT
    FOR THE USER INPUT.
    HOW TO DO IT.
    Thanks
    Bala.
