Looking for Suggestions To Best Revise Illustrations

I have a project of updating approximately 100 illustrations (see screenshot) The illustration shown is a flatbed trailer with the proper arrangements of chains and straps to secure various cargo.
I have all original illustrations (from another agency), so I don't have to recreate. What I have to update is the location or position of a each chain or strap in relationship to cargo and the trailer. The chain is made up of separate shapes for each individual link of the chain. So moving the orientation of the chain is not going to be an easy task.
Here are my thoughts:
1. All illustrations are basically the same concept: cargo on trailer, securing method, different perspective view, etc. Could I use a 3-D modeling app to create models, yet be able to render in a similar outlined fashion? If so, what 3-D modeling/render app would you suggest?
Or, 2. Keep task in Illustrator, but try to optimize things like: recreating the chains as a brush pattern. Is there a way to alter the perspective of different links within a brush pattern? Or, is there a better approach of creating these elements?
I am open to any suggestions.

I am open to any suggestions...
Good. Here goes...
I have all original illustrations (from another agency), so I don't have to recreate.
I would recreate.
Could I use a 3-D modeling app to create models, yet be able to render in a similar outlined fashion?
Yes, you could. But depending on several things...:
How many different objects you're talking about.
How complex the objects.
Whether 3D geometry already exists.
... I probably wouldn't.
If so, what...app would you suggest?
I would suggest just about any 2D drawing program you might prefer.
Keep task in Illustrator, but try to optimize things like: recreating the chains as a brush pattern. Is there a way to alter the perspective of different links within a brush pattern?
Brush patterns for the chain is not the problem. The chosen use of converging perspective is the problem. That's your enemy. And it's not preferred for the task.
Or, is there a better approach of creating these elements?
There is: Parallel perspective (axonometric drawing; what most people call isometric drawing).
Individual drawings of the trailer(s) and cargo objects should be done in parallel perspective, on a pre-determined coordinate system (isometric, dimetric, or trimetric). Each object should be drawn in as many orientations as will be required to clearly illustrate the tie-down procedure. One orientation may work for the whole set. Or, particular setups may need more than one orientation to clearly show everything that needs to be shown.
Either way, regardless of what software(s) are involved, here's the thing: The project and purpose you depict (showing how objects should be properly secured to a trailer) is a prime example of why parallel perspective exists in the first place.
The purpose of the drawings is to clarify and instruct in the arrangement and assembly of multiple objects.
The visual information in the farthest distance is just as important and needs to be shown just as clearly as the nearest portion.
The drawings need to be done as efficiently as possible and to be as versatile as possible. You should be able to assemble multiple configurations/arrangements of objects from a library of objects. One original of each object should suffice for all instances.
That (among other things) is what axonometric drawing is all about. Because parallel edges are drawn as parallel, there are no "vanishing points." So a single drawing of a given object in a given orientation within the overall coordinate system (viewpoint) can be used at any location throughout the drawing. Chains and fittings don't have to shrink as they receed in the distance, no matter how they are arranged. Detail at the most distant reaches are just as clear as detail nearest the viewer.
Axonometric drawing is expressly supported in a few general-purpose drawing programs:
At the higher-priced end, Corel Designer can import 3D models in leading CAD formats, orient the model as desired, and flatten it to 2D so that it can then be enhanced with a full range of illustration tools, including a toolset designed to assist with parallel perspective drawing.
At the lower-priced end, Serif DrawPlus provides a clean feature set specifically to assist in parallel perspective drawing.
And yes, one can leverage 3D Effect (not just Extrude and Revolve, but also the too-often overlooked Rotate) to advantage. But there are problems inherent in 3D effect which largely negates its practicality. One biggie is that strokes become outlined when you usually don't want them to. So it becomes more practical to just draw using parallel perspective in the first place.
But the fact is, one can construct isometric (and dimetric and trimetric) in most any decent 2D vector drawing program with practical efficiency...if, of course, you know how.
If you don't know how, and if you the objects involved already exist as 3D models in a CAD program, you should:
Have the objects exported as flattened 2D drawings in standard isometric orientations, in DXF format.
Open the DXFs in your drawing program.
Simplify, smooth, join, and otherwise clean up the drawings to tidy paths.
Stylize the tidied-up drawings with stroke weights/fills/strokes, etc., as needed.
Make each object a reusable Group, Symbol, etc. and stored in a library.
Assemble a drawing by arranging instances of the individual objects.
Leverage whatever features the drawing program has for things like chains, ropes, etc.

  • Looking for suggestions for a new computer

    Hello!
I am curently an undergrad student with a 4(ish) year old Toshiba Satellite A505. It has an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU Processor (P7350 @2.00 GHz), 4GB RAM, and a 64-bit opperating system. I bought it with Windows Vista on it and still use it. No changes have been made to the opperating system or other specs on the computer. It runs fine but is getting a little slow and I know that it is getting behind on opperating system capablilities and harddrive capabilities.
I am planning on going on to Grad school within the next 2 years. I know that is a long time to be looking for a computer now, but I need to start saving and thought that I could find at leas ta ball park of what I will be spending and what to look for when I finally get around to buying a new computer. I will be studying archaeology and will be using programs like AutoCAD as well as running my own reasearch, which will include a lot of image editing, storage, and use. I will also probably be using a lot of data and database programs as well as writing many, many very long research papers and doing many presentations. Not to mention everyday student use for note taking and studying. I also like playing The Sims (FYI). I want something that can be used for perosnal use as well as a research tool so I would like to have something that can hold up to frequent "light" use and frequent "heavy" use. I love my Toshiba. It has been a wonderful computer and wouldn't mind staying with that company. However, I'm not afraid of going to a different company as long as it isn't Apple. I wouldn't mind using a Mac, but with all the research I plan on doing I would like to have a computer that is as compatable with the University system as possible.
In summation, I'll need something with a lot of power, a lot of space, and the ability to run both light and heavy programs like AutoCAD and photo/data editing and storage software as well as being suited for normal student and personal use. No Macs.
    Thank you!

Both computers I would like to suggest are both out of stock at the moment due to the holidays. However, both of these would be excellent choices considering we are talking about heavy cpu usage.
I believe both of these are possible heavy hitters for you.
I personally own this machine so can claim that this machine should meet your every need without a hiccup.

  • Looking for suggestions for a new display: What size, resolution and refresh is recommended?

I've been using my laptop display, 15.6" and its just too small. I figured I'd purchase a display to plug into the laptop. I'd like suggestion on specs. I figured a 20 to 23 inch would work ok but I've seen some folks with dual screens. Lastly, I have no understanding of resoution, refresh rates to look for or brands to either look at or stay away from.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks.

The good news is that you don't need to worry too much about the specs -- just about any monitor you purchase will be OK.  First choose a size that fits in you work area, then pick the monitor from that range of products that has the highest resolution and refresh rates -- the monitors will all have very similar specs.
    I've been using PCConnection
    http://www.pcconnection.com/
as my primary source for computer purchases for over 12 years and highly recommend it.  They have user's comments for most of their products, so you can get a feel for the satisfaction level of the products.
I've never understood the value of having dual monitors, unless one needs to have a couple of real-time monitoring apps open at the same time for instant feedback about the data....

  • Looking for team development best practices

We are new to Flex and have a team of five developers with

so it's efficient for everyone to work together. Coming from

  • Looking for suggestions on alternate printing services

I ordered my first two iPhoto books from Apple last month. Processing was quick and the physical quality was as advertised, however the photo print quality was lower than I had expected and I think the price is a little high overall.
I'm wondering what printers others have used successfully from iPhoto. I'd prefer to have it printed locally so I can work with the printer face-to-face, but online ordering is no problem (and more of what I'm expecting to get here). Since I can make a PDF of the completed book it should just be a matter of finding a print shop that'll make a book from PDF. Any suggestions, good or bad? Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If you're looking for large sized prints I just got back a 20"x30" collage from Large Format Posters that I put together with Photoshop and OmniGraffle and it was outstanding in color and sharpness. They required the file to be converted to CMYK which told me they were using high end printers. I did the conversion on composite file and uploaded it to their site (77MB). I am extremely happy with it. They print from 11x 17 on up. That's the only experience with online printing I've had.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Looking for Suggestions on granting all users access to an application *except a subset of users*

This might not be the right forum for this question, but since it is related to an App-V application I figured I would try since this may have come up for some of you.  I am looking for the best way to grant all Domain Users access to an application
except for Domain Admins.  Using the Full App-V infrastructure, I want to grant access to the App-V UI via User Targeting, but I don't want to allow Domain Admins access.  The reason for this is because when we make updates to provisioned
server cores (stateless), we login with our Admin accounts to make modifications to the cores, and I would like to reduce the steps that need to be taken at the end to ensure that all AppV applications are removed before sealing up the core.
Currently, Domain Admins do not have access to any App-V applications, so this process is fairly clean.  All applications are User Targeted.
Packages are cached on a persistent D drive on each server, so the issue is that the registry, programdata, and packageinstallationroot become out of sync if packages are pulled down during core modifications after the core is attached to other servers (hence
other D drives).  Because of this, Machine Targeting is not an option for this either.

This would be so much easier with a "Configuration Manager" like feature where you could create a collection query to accomplish the same thing.  Are there other tools out there that will do the same thing?

  • Looking for information on best practices using Live Upgrade to patch LDOMs

This is in Solaris 10. Relatively new to the style of patching... I have a T5240 with 4 LDOMS. A control LDOM and three clients. I have some fundamental questions I'd like help with..
    Namely:
#1. The Client LDOMS have zones running in them. Do I need to init 0 the zone or can I just +zoneadm zone halt+ them regardless of state? I.E. if it's running a database will halting the zone essentially snapshot it or will it attempt to shut it down. Is this even a nessessary step.
#2. What is the reccommended reboot order for the LDOMs? do I need to init 0 the client ldoms and the reboot the control ldom or can I leave the client LDOM's running and just reboot the control and then reboot the clients after the control comes up?
#3. Oracle. it's running in several of the zones on the client LDOM's what considerations need to be made for this?
I am sure other things will come up during the conversation but I have been looking for an hour on Oracle's site for this and the only thing I can find is old Sun Docs with broken links.
Thanks for any help you can provide,

Before you use live upgrade, or any other patching technique for Solaris, please be sure to read http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23823_01/html/E23801/index.html which includes information on upgrading systems with non-global zones. Also, go to support.oracle.com and read Oracle Solaris Live Upgrade Information Center [ID 1364140.1]. These really are MANDATORY READING.
    For the individual questions:
#1. During the actual maintenance you don't have to do anything to the zone - just operate it as normal. That's the purpose of the "live" in "live upgrade" - you're applying patches on a live, running system under normal operations. When you are finisihed with that process you can then reboot into the new "boot environment". This will become more clear after reading the above documents. Do as you normally would do before taking a planned outage: shut the databases down using the database commands for a graceful shutdown. A zone halt will abruptly stop the zone and is not a good idea for a database. Alternatively, if you can take application outages, you could (smoothly) shutdown the applications and then their domains, detach the zones (zoneadm detach) and then do a live upgrade. Some people like that because it makes things faster. After the live upgrade you would reboot and then zoneadm attach the zones again. The fact that the Solaris instance is running within a logical domain really is mostly besides the point with respect to this process.
As you can see, there are a LOT of options and choices here, so it's important to read the doc. I ***strongly*** recommend you practice on a test domain so you can get used to the procedure. That's one of the benefits of virtualization: you can easily set up test environments so you cn test out procedures. Do it! :-)
#2 First, note that you can update the domains individually at separate times, just as if they were separate physical machines. So, you could update the guest domains one week (all at once or one at a time), reboot them into the new Solaris 10 software level, and then a few weeks later (or whenever) update the control domain.
If you had set up your T5240 in a split-bus configuration with an alternate I/O domain providing virtual I/O for the guests, you would be able to upgrade the extra I/O domain and the control domain one at a time in a rolling upgrade - without ever having to reboot the guests. That's really powerful for providing continuous availability. Since you haven't done that, the answer is that at the point you reboot the control domain the guests will lose their I/O. They don't crash, and technically you could just have them continue until the control domain comes back up at which time the I/O devices reappear. For an important application like a database I wouldn't recommend that. Instead: shutdown the guests. then reboot the control domain, then bring the guest domains back up.
    3. The fact that Oracle database is running in zones inside those domains really isn't an issue. You should study the zones administration guide to understand the operational aspects of running with zones, and make sure that the patches are compatible with the version of Oracle.
I STRONGLY recommend reading the documents mentioned at top, and setting up a test domain to practice on. It shouldn't be hard for you to find documentation. Go to www.oracle.com and hover your mouse over "Oracle Technology Network". You'll see a window with a menu of choices, one of which is "Documentation" - click on that. From there, click on System Software, and it takes you right to the links for Solaris 10 and 11.

Anyway, you're not asking about After Effects!
For Photoshop, 8 GB is recommended. It will run on 4, but...8 is recommended. See this page: System requirements | Photoshop

  • Looking for suggestions to set up calendar and contacts

    Hi
Ive had my iPhone for a couple months now and cannot seem to get the synching of my contacts and calendar right. When Im done, my calendar has duplicates and I wonder if I've erased something somewhere. Is there a way to create a brand new calendar dedicated to the iPhone that all information created on the iPhone is transfered to that calendar on my Macbook Pro rather than information from my Macbook Pro transferring or changing data on my iPhone? I want to retain what I have so just incase I can look back and see if anything is missing, but I wouldlike to have a dedicated calendar for the iPhone. Im still learning about calendar and set up so tips and suggestions welcome.
I am a dog trainer so I schedule my specific appointments on my iPhone and also have all day events that I schedule as "all day". Sometimes after a sync, I'll have duplicate appointments for some reason and have to go back and delete them; but I wonder if things have been erased.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi
Thx for the reply. However, my iPhone is actually where I enter my newer entries. With that in mind, what would I do differently from what you suggested below?
Also, I have to organize my desktop calendar differently and not sure how yet. I have clients I work with daily, some 3 days a week others 2 days a week and so on. I wanted to break things down in colors so I created a separate calendar based on days of week I work with clients but not sure if that works when syncing.
Also, when I play around with calendar, its a bit wacky. Meaning, its not working right. But besides that factor, I tried using the tutorial but it obviously doesn't offer suggestions in organizing. Its the syncing factor that really makes it difficult.
If you have any suggestions I'd appreciate it.
    Thank you,
    Brigitte

  • Looking for suggestions to create a graphical user interface. Swing?

    Hi there,
I am considering developing this as a side-project, therefore wish to know how much work will be involved (ie. if I have time to complete it).
The situation. I have an online game that I play. It allows access to data using text files, that are updated on an hourly basis. These text files are generally a number of MB in size (containing details for players: Id, name, tribe, score, and other ranking-related data). I wish to access these text files, then - using the data contained within them - create a graphical map-like interface.
    Features of the map:
    - scrolling (or changing view in some other way)
    - tool-tips when highlighting over certain elements?
    - contains graphics, located on a web server (or I can easily download these to use locally)
    Questions:
    (1) Am I able to run background processes in some way, on a Windows machine, to automatically update the data?
    (2) Would it be best to save objects to a file - then load them when the program is run, or actually save the data to a local database? What DBMS do you recommend, and what classes should I look at to find out more about interacting with databases?
    (3) I have not written a graphical-based application before using Java. I have heard a little about Swing. Is this the only GUI designer I should look in to, or are there others? Please give me names, I can start researching from there. The GUI would need to support something similar to the map I described above.
If you require more information, let me know. As far as I know I am not allowed to post the link to the game here, however if you need to have a look at it to understand the problem I will do so.

What DBMS do you recommend, and what classes should I look at to find out more about interacting with databases? It depends - are you just loading these objects into main memory when you fire up your program? If so, serializing them out to a file is find. If you're going to be doing queries and updates while your program is running then using a DB would likely be a Good Thing. • Looking for suggestions to sync external drives over internet

I have a iMac connected to an external hard drive at my house. I would like to sync this external drive to a another external drive connected to a Mac Mini at my parents house. I would like this sync to happen automatically at night and also be free.
    Anyone have any suggestions??

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I checked out the rsync stuff but I think its a little over my head. If I had the time or patience I could create a customized solution like that but it seems more trouble than its worth. I am looking more for an application that does the work for you like Crash Plan.
I tested out CrashPlan last night. I installed it on both machines and it was able to backup the files I need very quickly. It supports the ability to set times for the backup which is a big bonus.
The only problem I run into is that it does not make a 1:1 copy of the data. It backs it up to the destination drive in some weird file format that you can not just access the data. If I experienced a failure I would have to use their restore utility to recover the files.
What I would like is that if the drive at my house fails I can run over to my parents, grab that drive, plug it in and be working exactly as before. Crash Plan is so close to being what I want but I just do not want to have to take the time, and trust that their utility will restore the data when I need.

  • Looking for Suggestions with Lenova h50

So as an early b-day present my dad decided to chip in and help me replace my older amd based asus tower.
The previous tower I had was a mid-range case. And had  enough  room for myself to be able to purchase an antec 850 modular atx power supply and with that I use a nvidia gtx 770 gpu.
Obviously I learned today sadly the new LEnovo is not a mid tower and the power supply is way underspec at 180 watts.
What hardware upgrade solutions can I look into that would allow me to either use a different video card.. or my current gtx 770? I would hate to have to return it as its a gift from my dad.
    Thank you,
    TheJedi.

Personally, I prefer Sansa devices. they're extremely cheap and are very simple to use, especially if all you want to use it for is music.

I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.
