Looking to upgrade Powerbook G4 to Power Mac G5 or faster

I currently have a 12" Powerbook G4 (40gHD/768RAM/1Ghz proc) from 2003 running 10.2.7. I'm having trouble surfing the net and stuff cuz most browsers require at least 10.4 as most of the sites like youtube,myspace and facebook and flash players as well. Not to mention I want to run Pro Tools for audio recording.
So I am thinking of just buying a used G5 instead of spending over $2k on a new machine or sinking in money by upgrading my PB. I have noticed that most of the used G5's on ebay do not come with the OS restore discs? I am guessing that most people keep them and install them on other machines? My question is, I always thought that you can only load the OS on the disc on the original machine it came with because of the serial number it asks you for? It seems like this is not true? any info?

I haven't puchased a new Mac since my Powerbook in 03, what NEW Apple computers you think would be comprable? I noticed that they can go up to $3k these days but I'm guessing thats WAY more than I need? Would it be better to just buy a used G5 for around $4-$600 or can I find something new for a little bit more thats just as powerful?

Hi Frank, they're supposed to include the OS Install Discs with them, it's the License to use it.
You might look into a new Mac Mini, faster than most G5s.

Upgrade Airport on G5 Power Mac?

I am looking to upgrade the Airport capability on my early 2004 Power Mac G5 2GHz DP to the 802.11n standard. What are my options? Does anyone make an 802.11n-standard Airport card that will fit in this model Mac, or am I restricted to third-party PCI cards or USB sticks? For 802.11n, third party devices are all that are available.
PCI cards will give less trouble than the USB devices, simply due to the architectural differences between the PCI bus and the USB bus and the respective data handling protocols.
The PCI cards also have better reception due to the antenna that is attached.

Upgrading 1.8 MHz Power Mac G5 (memory and OS)

I recently purchased an iMac loaded with Leopard. I would like to use the install disk to upgrade my older Power Mac G5. My machine is running 10.3.9 currently.
I know I need to increase memory, but by how much? A salesman sold me additional memory some time ago, but it caused a lot of problems and I removed it. Now I'm leery of what to buy. Will the following memory description be appropriate, both in type and quantity to run Leopard?

My Power Mac's memory currently consists of 2-128MB DDR SDRAM PC3200U-30330.
I'm application-oriented and not too technically savvy.

The G5s came stock with 256MB 6 yrs ago but even then it was sub-standard amount and 1.2 - 1.5GB RAM was much better for even basic light use.
2GB should be a good improvement, you have 4 DIMM slots likely. But it depends on what you plan to do or use it for. Buy from vendors that sell and cater to Mac hardware.
OEM DVDs like from an iMac can't be used, they don't load sometimes, and you really do need retail discs. Good luck finding 10.5.x DVD retail.
New drives can also do a lot to improve performance.
Realize though, other than running older PowerPC applications, the iMac should be able to do most things very well.

Can someone who knows Macs well help me with software and hardware. What is the best set up I can have to make my G5 fast, powerful, and up-to-date without buying a new one.

Highest OS you should use is 10.5...Leopard. RAM...between 4GB and 8GB. It will run FCP 7...the entire suite...but it will not convert anything to ProRes. It doesn't have the power. It won't be able to deal with most (talking 80-90%) of the new camera formats (AVCintra, AVCHD, H.264, RED).
Sorry, but that machine is 6 years out of date. Actually...1.6Ghz processor...8 years out of date. There is no way it will be "up to date." Your MacBook Pro will run CIRCLES around it.

The Migration Assistant is an application that will transfer stuff from an old Mac running OS X to a new Mac running OS X. You will need a FireWire cable to connect both Macs. The Migration Assistant can be found in Applications > Utilities.

The hard drive crashed it was an 80GB apple model that is the biggest that originally came with the. powerbook. I was wondering if it is wise to put a larger one and if so which type can I order IE... how big data storage and type IEE etc.

Not a computer guru by any means but I just went through this with a 1.67ghz G4 PB 15" with a crashed hard drive that I was given to me by a relative.
You can replace your HD, the only large ATA drives currently available, I believe, are from Western Digital, their 320gb drive is the largest and is available through Amazon for about $90. Other vendors sell the drive as well.
Go to ifixit.com for excellent instructions on how to do this mod. The HD replacement is a little complicated and you should go through the ifixit instructions to see if you are comfortable tearing into your computer to that degree BEFORE you buy a HD.

See and copy files from a Power Mac without keyboard and monitor

A friend gave me his G4 Power Mac. I think it is a Quicksilver. (I will post some pics of both the front and back on Flickr if anyone wants to see it.) I didn't get the keyboard or monitor cuz I forgot I would need the keyboard to use Firewire Target Disc mode on it. I just need to see what files are on it (and probably copy whatever ones I need onto my newer Powerbook.)
I have a 17" Powerbook G4 DL and a Powerbook Firewire (500mhz, running OS 9.2.2), and another G4 Power Mac ADP set up to always start up in Firewire Target Mode so I can use it like an external drive (which I never do...) and a bunch of older Macs (LC 580, SE...)
How can I get onto this new machine? I need to see what files are on there. I do not have access to another monitor but I might be able to borrow a USB keyboard so I can start it up in Target Mode. Is there anything I can do before I scrounge for a USB keyboard?
I have tried connecting by Firewire and ethernet with both Powerbooks. The Power Mac isn't showing up either way. I am pretty sure it has a CD drive but pushing on the door (one of two on the front) doesn't open it up.
I am assuming the Power Mac is running OSX.

I think it is a Quicksilver
It may be easier to look at the rear panel for some labeling. It may be silk-screened on with white paint and a bit hard to see.A four-digit model number with "M" as a leader will pretty much nail down the model without taking photos that may not show much.Quicksilvers can have models number M8360, M8493, or M8493 depending on the config.
For snopping the drive, it may be easier to pull the drive from the G4 and use one of these extremely handy gadgets:

to mount the bare G4 drive on your working PowerBook with OSX. It will show up on the PB as an external drive and you can see what's there. The adaptor will be serviceable for more than just checking this hard drive. Anyone with multiple Macs will get a lot of use from it.
Remember that some third-party keyboards do not recognize Mac start-up key combos, and that some current Aluminum Apple boards may not work correctly with older Macs. The Al board with numeric keypad (here) says it will work with Tiger. The wireless ones and the short "non-keypad" version require Leopard or higher.

The best is probably the one that you can find..... getting hard to find Mac 8x AGP cards.....
Best OEM cards are (were) Radeon 850XT, Radeon X800XT, Geforce 6800 Ultra and Geforce 6800 GT, in order from fastest.

Upgrading a Power Mac from a PowerBook?

I'd like to upgrade my Power Mac from Panther to Tiger, and have recently purchased a PowerBook that came with Tiger (gray 10.4.2 discs). I gather from physically trying it, then searching this list, that the grey discs won't work. What I've not seen addressed is whether it's possible to get Tiger on the Power Mac directly from the PowerBook?

Correct. The discs that come with a specific model are only usable on that model. You would have to purchase a retail version of Tiger on eBay or from FastMac.com or by calling AppleCare and ordering a copy (it may be several weeks delay.)
If you were to clone from your other computer you'd have the same problem. The installed version of Tiger from the gray discs also will not work on your other computer for the same reason the installer doesn't work.

Should I upgrade my Power Mac quad core 2.66 or go for a new(er) machine?

I have a 2009 Power Mac, quad core 2.66 ghz, 6GB RAM, OS 10.6.8 and primarily run graphic apps (Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, etc.) for Graphic Design projects and Photography. I've begun to run into sites that want newer versions of Safari and am thinking I should upgrade for security purposes. Firefox won't load (crashes machine), can't upgrade Flash-- wondering if it's time to upgrade OS but when I look at the latest version it won't run on the machine.
I've read where I can purchase a new graphic card and then "hack" the system to run the latest OSX but am wondering, after all is said and done with costs would I just be better off getting a new(er) machine (maybe a powerbook i7)? Would the performance be about the same? I love my Power Mac (the inside is so perfectly designed) and, aside from the browser issues it generally does everything I need. graphic cards that are recommended don't seem to be in production any longer and those that are listed retail for around $350-$500. A RAM boost (extra 16GB for $200) and even a processor upgrade from OWC (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/turnkey/MacPro/2010_Xeon_Processor) ($500-$600) and conceivably I could run this machine into the ground.

Upgrade Power Mac G5 Hard Drive: But New Drive Doesn't show up??

I have a Power Mac G5 1.8 (circa 2003). I bought it in 2003 and it has travelled all over the world with me. I love it. It has been the best and most reliable computer I ever owned; and I'm trying to keep it humming along as long as possible.
I am currently running Leopard (OS 10.5.8).
I have 2.5 GB of Ram (I upgraded 2 GB a few years back)
I have currently run out of room on my Hard Drive 160GB - the original one that came with the computer.
I purchased a Seagate Barracuda 2TB Hard Drive (Seagate ST2000DL003) to replace the 160GB one.
However, when I tried to replace the drive - it wouldn't show up on my computer. I could see it appear on screen when I looked at Disk Utility but not in the window that allows you to select a drive? - and continue the installation process? did I buy the wrong kind of drive?
I'm 100% sure I'm doing something wrong. I just have no clue what it is?
Could someone please help; or point me in the right direction?
I'm not a computer whizz; nonetheless I'm not affraid to dabble in DIY.

I've got a 10.5.8 power mac G5 but would like to upgrade to new software, lion and office 2011, but that requires an intel processor. Is this a lost cause? If not any ideas what it might cost me?

Okay looks like I didn't understand the format for these questions. I have used my Mac BookPro almost exclusively for work and my Power Mac for my home recording studio but now want the Power Mac to be a second computer for my work. The max OS for all Macs with a PowerPC processor is Leopard OS 10.5.x.
If you are going to consider getting a newer, but used, Mac, here's the requirements for Lion.
Lion 10.7 System Requirements
    •    Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor (most models released since late 2006 - early Intel-based Macs with Core Solo or Core Duo processors aren't compatible)
    •    2GB of memory (recommend at least 4GB -- and ideally even more, as you'll see benefits in many computing tasks)
    •    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended) for Lion download from Apple App Store; or Leopard 10.5.x if using Lion on USB drive
    •    7GB of available space (10GB recommended)
