Looks like Leopard ate my JPEG's.

Well after months, yes month's, of research the common consensus is that Leopard cannot properly interpret, read, process, however you may call it, some information written into xmp meta data of images brought into Leopard after having been used in Tiger. More specifically it can be narrowed down to this particular bit: http://ns.adobe.com/camera-raw-settings/1.0/ which resides inside the xmp.
Has anyone heard of a fix or work around to this issue yet?

This is the best page to understand exiftool:
http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/exiftool_pod.html
I would start with this command:
+exiftool -TagsFromFile <test>.jpg <test>.xmp+
The resulting .xmp file will have all the tags in XML format. You can look thru and see what specific XMP's are getting you into trouble.
To just get rid of all XMP tags issue the following:
+exiftool -xmp:all= <test>.jpg+
Then see if you can use the jpg. If desired exiftool has flags for recursing thru files in a directory, and to overwrite the original jpg (the default is to preserve the original).
Also take a look at:

  • RAW looking like JPEG

I shoot with a Canon 30D and I have shot RAW to this point. My question is, is it possible to have a preset of processing options for lightroom that would render my RAW file to look like it was a JPEG. From this point I could continue to process is as I see fit (from the "jpeg" point of view).
I imagine someone has asked this question as well.... and maybe it's a simple response, but an answer would be greatly appreciated, and save me a lot of time!
I am currently using Lightroom 2.7 64bit on an iMac
    Thanks!

    Hi Dave
You need to experiment with your develop settings and save your favorite as a pre-set.
You can then apply the pre-set automatically as your starting point for all raw files when importing images into Lightroom.
Using raw will always give the greatest tonal range for post processing but some photographers are happy to shoot in high quality Jpeg and then rely on the camera for compression and processing. Sports and action photographers tend to rely on the advantages of Jpeg as the huge size of raw files does not permit a high camera burst rate when writing to a storage card.

I've tried resetting my phone, looking for the pics in the new 'deleted' folder. I tried forwarding the jpegs to sees if they'll appear in a new message (but turnout the phone won't let me forward these pics). Apple is trying to say it's the 30 day reason, but I know that is not the problem. ALl of my pics older than 30 days were viewable. It is the upgrade that screwed this up. Help! Important pics!

As for iPhoto, it sounds like you were trying to move files around in the library. That is a bib no-no in Aperture or iPhoto.

I'm trying to migrate from mobileMe to iCloud but I have Snow Leopard (the latest version). It looks like Lion is no longer available because Mountain Lion comes out next month (July). The problem is mobileMe ends on June 30th. How can I migrate?
My iphone and my ipad are compatible but when I try to go to icloud on my phone it says to do it on my computer.
I would like to have my calendar, contacts, etc.. all sync like they do now. Is there a way to upgrade before June 30th? If not, will the gap be an issue or will I just be able to buy mountain lion and sync everything?
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you!

You can buy Lion in the App Store now, but move to iCloud now. If you wait to Mountain Lion, you will only have Mail in Snow Leopard, so you will lose syncing unless you use Lion or Mountain Lion. It's up to you

    Hello,
My 20inch iMac's internal drive died and I'm trying to re-install Lion on an external drive. If I could get the Lion DMG file I think I'd be all set but am not sure how to do this. It doesn't look like the Lion Recovery feature is supported in my older iMac. And I have Leopard installed on the external drive but there's no AppStore to download the Lion DMG file.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    -Lee

Without a bootable backup/clone or a Time Machine backup of your previous Snow Leopard installation or a saved copy of Lion's install app, you'll have to upgrade your Leopard volume to Snow Leopard (10.6.6+) so you can waste another hour or more DLing the Lion thing again.

  • In FINDER, the IMAGES section of 'All My FIles', what is: myDocuments.cannedSearch?  Looks like images of jpegs & PDFs I viewed, even if I had deleted it.

I previously posted a similar question, but I was not clear in my message. I know that files (categorized as PDF Documents, Movies, Presentations, Spreadsheets, etc.) in "all my files' in the FINDER are all my files and if I delete them, I am deleting the original copies.  However, the IMAGES category has thousands of images of PDF and jpeg files, even ones I had deleted.  I do not have thousands of pics or pdf documents.  It looks like these images are files I had opened, even if I deleted the files.  I want to clean up files on MAC.  Any suggestions?   See info below regarding IMAGES category of ALL MY FILES.  When I clic on INFO, it says it is a saved query.

I actually just noticed the "media" option is no longer listed along the left side of Finder. I think that is where I accessed iphoto and my other picture folder.
There is no media option in the Finder. That only turns up in Open... Dialogues like this:

Library > Filters > Distortion Filters > Wave is the one you want if working in Motion. From the User manual:
    Wave
Distorts the object to simulate waves oscillating across it. The wave filter is not automatically animated, but you can animate the Offset parameter to animate the effect of waves causing the image to undulate.
    Parameters in the Inspector
Amplitude: Sets the amplitude of the waves. Values range from 0 to 100.
Wavelength: Sets the length of the waves. Values range from 1 to 100.
Offset: Sets the offset of the wave, with values ranging from –500 to 500.

    Hi everyone,
I am having a problem with my Mac OS X 10.7.5 mac book air , there are constant pop pups and small windows with ads blinking constantly opening up on my safari in front of everything?? it is constantly interupting me and makes me mistakingly click on it then another new windows open behind the one im using..
I am not too sure if thats a virus or trojan.. I always thought that macs didn't get virus? this looks like one to me… any experts around? please help me fix it with your instructions? really don't know what to do... thanks

Those are not viruses. You have probably installed some malware:
The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

I have been trying for hours to extend my Extreme Gen 5 network with an Express Gen 2.  But no matter what I do or try, it doesn't work.  What does happen is my internet gets blocked somehow when the Express is online and looks like it's set up perfect and 'green' - but no internet connection for anything even though the Extreme is green and the modem is good.  Once I disconnect the Express, everything is good again.
I've tried LAN, WAN, though a switch, direct connect, Extreme set to Extend the network, the Express set to be an extension.  Most of the time I get an error trying to update the Express.  But when it seems to be set up perfect, the entire house can't get to the internet.  Just when it looks right, it is so wrong.
If anyone can give me exact steps (e.g., "...from the Base Station menu, select the Restore Default Setting option" vice "...just restore the defaults..."), I would greatly appreciate it.  I'm left to the conclusion that the Express is faulty.  I've been using Airport Utility 6.2 from Mountain Lion on one computer and Airport Utility 5.6.1 from Snow Leopard on another computer (the latter give more control while the former just want you to 'forget' the Express).

I finally got it working.  I was trying to set it up ethernet.  My biggest mistake was when the new Express came on, I did not select 'Continue' - I went straight to manual thinking that I would get the most setup options in manual mode.  So everything I initially tried always resulted in 'wireless'.  Even when I would update or restore default settings, the Express would not completely restart. Or sometimes I would get an error. So most of the time I had to unplug it.  So when it came back up, none of my changes were retained. But there were a lot of times when everything was green and appeared to be fine. But anytime the ethernet cable was plugged in, no more internet.
So here's the weird part.  When I finally tried 'continue' (vice manual), I would get 4 options.  One would be 'ethernet' extended.  So I would select it, it gave me green lights, all looked good, and still the same problem.  This is when I got frustrated.  I thought I had exhausted all possible combinations.
But somehow when trying continue again after another restore, I only got 3 options.  One was the same ethernet extended option (can't remember what the missing 4th one was).  And this time it worked - it gave me the big green circle with the checkmark saying it was successful.  I don't know what I did different, but I know now that it won't work if 4 options come up to choose from.  It will work if only 3 options come up.  And success if only verified by the big checkmark.  Had anyone anywhere said the checkmark declaring success is validation, then maybe I wouldn't have gone down so many rabbit holes thinking it should have been successful.
As for which Airport Utility I prefer, 6.2 looks nice, but it would just ignore the Express and would want me to 'forget' it and would not let me edit it.  Airport Utility 5.6.1 was the one that I ended up using the most and finally had success with.  It still strikes me as odd that there is no manually way to pick ethernet, it can only be choosen following a 'restore defaults', and only from the 3-option list (the 4-option list had the same ethernet choice, but it no worky).
Thanks for the response.  I really do appreciate it.
Aiport Extreme Gen5 - internet access and router
Airport Express Gen2 - connected via ethernet, extending my wireless
    - configured while connect directly to the Extreme, but now on a switch (16-port hub)
    Using Airport 5.6.1
    1) Restore Defaults from Base Station menu
    2) Following restart, Select Continue
    3) Of the 3 option presented, select 'ethernet.... extend network...'
      - if 4 options are present, may not work
    4) Wait for the green circle with the big white checkmark.
    5) Connected Express to the switch where a cable went to other end of house - works.
    Dead-zone went from 2mbps to 24mbps.
I probably spent 4 hours chasing my tail in anger.  The correct way took about 5 minutes total.
    Thanks again.

  • Hello, I need help with my macbook pro. It looks like I cannot install anything anymore. Everytime I try to install a new software, use the migration assistant or click the lock to make changes, it simply does not react.

Hello, I need help with my macbook pro.
It looks like I cannot install anything anymore. Everytime I try to install a new software, I simply get stuck during the installation type process. I put in my password, it does accept it, but it does not go any further.
I tried to reset the password, put no password, repair the permissions, the disk but nothing will do. I nearly got stuck with the log in screen but finally succeeded in disabling it.
So I thought I might try to create a new account but I cannot click the lock to make changes. It simply refuses to react.
I am now thinking about using the migration assistant to save all my settings, data and so fourth, but again I get stuck when I have to type in my password. It accepts it but nothing happens...
I guess it has something to do with the authorization process, but can't find anything on the internet about it... Can you help me out?
    I am running Lion 10.7.3.
    Regards,
    Nicolas.
(I apologize if any grammatical/structural mistakes were to be found, english is not my mother-tongue. )

You probably won't like this suggestion, but I suggest you reinstall Lion.
First, backup your system. Next, reboot your system, press/hold the COMMAND-R keys to boot into the Recovery HD. Select 'Reinstall Mac OS X'. If you purchased Lion as an upgrade to Snow Leopard, the reinstall process will install Lion 10.7.3. If your system came preinstalled with Lion, you might still get Lion 10.7.2. Both installs are a total install of the OS. None of your apps or data will be impacted. Just the OS.

  • Looks like I have an operating system/software incompatibility

Still working on trying to resolve the problem I posed earlier today in the "MacBooks" Forum. Here's what I'm dealing with:
In 2002, I impulsively bought a MacBook, loaded several of my favorite apps, but otherwise really didn't use it until 2010 — when realizing that my desktop iMac was about to fail, I quickly loaded  a stack of valuable documents onto the MacBook (probably via the local area network I was using at the time).
Since then, the MacBook has been just sitting on my desk . . . untouched, except for the endless stack of papers accumulated on top of it. (Also disconnected the LAN when the back-up Mac I was using for storage and emergencies bit the dust 1-2 years ago.
Yesterday, I decided it was time to clear the desk space, so booted up the MacBook intending to transfer the documents to a CD before removing them from the Mac; but ran into a problem when the CD/DVD icon failed to show up on the desktop. In addition, although the MacBook runs fine when the  CD tray is empty, it  immediately freezes when the disk is added . . . while  MacBook itself  NEVER loads if the CD is already in the tray when I first turn it on.
Apple Menu and Extension folder both show the CD/DVD driver, but error message states  "this MAc does not support  the Apple DVD driver."
The only explanation I can think of is a conflict between the OS and the CD player, but if so, don't  understand why, since the CD player was original equipment on the  MacBook when I bought it from a dealer (probably around mid-July 2002).
It's also unlikely that I upgraded the original OS — especially since it is still using version 9.2 . . .  and I just read an old press release stating Apple was switching to OS X for all Mac's effective by the end of August 2002.
As a long-time  MacUser, I have a stack of OS disks for Macs I purchased when disks were still part of the package . . . including Version 9.2 (dated 2001) . . . an undated Apple Hardware Test  . . . and a DVD install disk for Mac OS 10.5 — as well as later upgrades.
If I were  certain things wouldn't go from bad to worse, I'd consider loading  the 10.3 or 0.4 disks, but first would like to hear  from someone who can clue me in regarding  possible risks.
BTW, spoke by phone with a live Apple rep this morning (actually 3 different ones, because my call  kept being escalated) but he was unable toa dvise me, because  his job training didn't go that far back.
BTW . . .Current  product list below is incorrect, but I was unable to update it.  At the moment, in addition to the MacBook, I am down to just a late 21.5-inch (late 2012)  iMac, LG  external optical drive and  iPad Mini (all purchased last summer).

Not sure  what happened to the update I submitted yesterday . . .or where it went — but I have made a little  progress:
After  combing thru the web for 36 hours, I found a couple of helpful leads, including one that mentioned early MacBooks sometimes had problems dealing with CDs with recording capacities of up to 80 minutes. When I checked, sure enough the Memorex disk I was using  fell into that category; but in the process of  checking it out, I also discovered that I had inadvertently loaded  2 graphic images onto the disk . . . forgotten to label it and put it back in the box. But it also was unable to read a brand new Memorex disk from the same sleeve of disks, either.
And as it turned out, neither could the built-in optical drive on my old back-up iMac, or the external portable DVD writer I bought to replace the built-in one missing from the newer desktop Mac I bought last year. However, all 3 could read the 74-minute pre-recorded Verbatim disk containing music and the 80 minute Imation disk with graphic images, while MacBook was the only one unable to open a pristine 80-minute Verbatim disk.
The bottom line was that when I contacted Verbatim for help in understanding why the MacBook could open that company's 74-munute disk but  not an 80-minute disk, the tech support rep recommended upgrading the firmware — a suggestion I temporarily put on hold, after suddenly remembering I also had a thumb drive that might work. . . It did!! . . . At least to the extent that I've been able to transfer small batches of files  from the MacBook to my newest desktop Mac.
The downside is that now that some of them made the journey safely, the majority still can't be read because they were converted to linux while in transit.
The reason, of course, is obvious (or at least I think it is). Although I never bothered to examine the documents after I transferred them (for safety's sake)  to the MacBook when I realized my "backup Mac"  had serious problems, the only ones I might have been able to open then were the ones created in Word, or updated Photoshop software. But most of the documents were created in PageMaker and versions of Adobe Illustrator commonly used  when I bought the MacBook back in 2002.
IOW — it looks like the Verbatim rep probably was correct. The  OS on the MacBook likely needs updating — something I actually might be able to do.
Because my only purpose in buying the MacBook was related to a specific family event, there is no question that I bought it some time between mid-June and mid-July, 2002 — less than 2 weeks before Apple announced that by the end of August 2002, all Macs sold would be using 0S 10. But since I had the sales receipts to prove how recently I had bought my MacBook, Apple agreed to send me upgrade disks.  I'm not sure how or why, but I ended up with disks for both OS 10.3 and OS 10.4 (as well as update disks for all other versions except 10.8.3 — which came pre-installed on my current Mac, but without backup disks)
Now being old enough and wise enough to look before I leap — while I'm assuming  it's safe to use the first set of install disks, I'm curious to know if doing so:
    1. . . . will enable the MacBook to read any new, commercial CD-R disk, and
    2. . . . is likely to prevent me from retrieving old PageMaker disks long enough to save them as JPEGs and/or PDFs
Although my telephone call yesterday to Apple support was escalated 3 times, I eventually was able to speak with a tech support rep. But according to him — "because 2002 MacBooks are now  obsolete," he has never been trained to solve problems on them. Click.

Advance warning - Mail worked fine.
I had fits with the last link I posted. At first it worked fine, then all of a sudden, it quit working. I now have iCloud - iCal syncing, but iCal is read only. Not a real big deal since you can log onto iCloud using Safari and post a new event.
I finally gave up on Address Book because it kept creating multiple contacts, which if you tried to merge or delete the multiple contacts, the contacts were deleted. It also worked at first and then stopped working as it should.

  • How to make a print look like a real polaroid?

For a certain project, I am trying to replicate the "look" of a polaroid, as in from an instant polaroid camera. I am wondering if anyone is aware of any photo printing paper in a format that looks like a polaroid? Or any other tips that might be helpful, ideally short of expert photoshop skills? Thanks!

    David:
Are you referring to having the white border around the photo? Also you'd have to crop it square. You would also want to soften the image a bit as most I've seen were not sharp by today's standards. A 3rd party editor that can handle layers could do it. The easiest of the freeware editors I've used is Acorn. You can crop the picture square and then add the white border around it. Acorn has various blur options and many filter options available in Photoshop Elements.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
