Losing type formatting when adjusting tabs.

I am losing formatting when I adjust tabs in CS6, specifically today I am losing space after paragraph setting but I have lost other formatting I think at other times. I think this only began in CS6, I cannot find a relevant post, thanks in advance for any help.

AI CS6 (16.0.5), I am using a Mac Pro, OS X 10.8.5.
I am attaching a screen shot, somewhat redacted. I have 147 pts space added to the paragraph at bottom of Bonus Payments section, the line beginning "$100,000 and above." If I adjust the tab of just just one line in that paragraph, I keep the space after the paragraph. If I adjust the tabs of the whole paragraph, my space after paragraph reverts to 0. This happens to me all the time, I think it is unique to CS 6 as well as I can remember.
Let me know if you need more info, thanks.

• Losing word format when 'Placing' from Microsoft Word to InDesign

Hi Everyone,
Whenever I place(import) a word document with some text/charts into InDesign the format seems to go all over the place and I find myself trying to put everything back in place(despite having done the formatting in WORD previously). Is this an issue with InDesign or am I doing something wrong? Please help me out..
Thanks,
Agassi

You'll have to be more descriptive.
Is it the styles like Bold, Italic, Superscript etc.?
Is it the layout? The tables going wonky?
When you import a word file you can go to File>Place, locate the file and then in the lower left corner of the Place Dialog Box is SHOW OPTIONS.
Here you can select multiple ways to import the file retaining or disgarding styles, footnotes, tables, numbered lists etc.
When you retain the styles the styles are not built the same as InDesign would have you build them. Unless you were meticulous about the Word Styles you used and created Bold Character styles and Italic Character Styles when building the Word file.
Otherwise you get all the text with Paragraph Styles that are overridden, like if you have a paragraph style with Times Roman and mid-way through the paragraph stylet he Times Roman changes to Times Roman Bold, well then in InDesign that is considered a Text Format Override, which is donated by the + symbol being active in the Paragraph Style Panel at the bottom. If you place the text cursor in this bold text and hit the Paragraph Override button (+) then it reverts back to Times Roman.
A nifty script to get around this is http://www.indesignsecrets.com/downloads/PreserveLocalFormatting.jsx
Copy that text to notepad or a text editor (not word as it upsets things) save the file as PreserveLocalFormatting.jsx and run the script on text in the document)
How to install and use scripts
http://indesignsecrets.com/how-to-install-scripts-in-indesign.php
The script will create Character Styles for any text that needs it in the selected story(s)

As for Tables
I'm not a big fan of Word Tables anyway, and Word uses RGB anyway, so I prefer to strip out all the formatting in tables as Tabbed Text and then reformat the Table this way. I just find it does a cleaner job.

• Losing font format when saving to .doc

When I save a Pages document in Microsoft Word format (.doc), I loose all my italic. If I have a word in a paragraph in italic, it will loose its format, mainly because the style of the paragraph is set to be regular. Is there a way around this? Is there a way to have a different style only for a word in a paragraph?

Merci beaucoup pour cette information! I tried to use the pull down menu right next to the font in the tool bar and it worked (instead of the italic button in the B I U menu bar). I think it may have something to do with what you said (about ttf). But again I'm not sure, but I did use another PC to open the .doc. I'll mark this issue as solved for the moment.

• Losing formatting when interfacing ...

I have an iMac, G4, and I am trying to interface with a novel critique group that uses VBulletin. Problem is that while everybody using Windows PC's can simply copy/paste from Word, WordPad, Lotus, WordPerfect, and even email, keeping the colors and formatting, when I post, no matter what I try, I get just black text on white.
I need the colors and text differences. Anyone know how I can get it to work?
Thanks,
Stephanie

What software are you using on your iMac?Using Microsoft Word for Mac you should have no problems at all with sharing your files with other Word users.
I've never tried it but I understand NeoOffice does a similar job for free.
iWorks is also Microsoft Word/Powerpoint compatible available from the Apple Store.

• Loss of formatting when emailing a AW6 ASCIII Text document

Background: I have taken an .xls email file from a PC user which I was able to open with icExcel. The .xls file was set up wrong---only two columns, surname in one and all other data (street address, city, state, zip, tel., email address) in another column. I created a spreadsheet file in icExcel AWorks6 and did a lot of cutting and pasting from the original file to create a true 7 column spreadsheet. I saved it as an ASCII Text document because my intent is to email it back to the PC user.
Now the dilemma---I can take that ASCII Text document and reopen it in an AW6 spreadsheet or into a database on my computer, no problems. Everything is formatted correctly. When I email the .txt document as an attachment to myself (experimenting first before emailing it to the PC user) it opens up automatically as a word processing document with all the formatting gone. I sent it to another of my email addresses, it did not open up automatically but the attachment came across as an HTTP text unix document file. What is happening to the structure and column formatting when I email the .txt document. What am I doing wrong following putting it into ASCII Text? Help please!! CAB

When you save an AppleWorks spreadsheet as text, you get a tab delimited file.
Data in each cell is followed by a tab character, and a return character separates the rows of data.
Your text file, opened into an AppleWorks WP document, should retain the tab characters, but will not display properly unless you have set tab stops in the ruler. AppleWorks defaults to a tab stop every half inch, and a tab character will push text to the next available stop. Variable length of data will cause data that should line up in the same column to be offset.
You can check for the presence of tabs (and other invisible characters) by pressing command-; (semi colon). Pressing the same keys again toggles the display off.
Try launching AppleWorks then specifying Spreadsheet as the document type when you open it using AW's Open dialogue (File > Open).
If you are successful, then the file should be openable by the PC user, using Excel. Three other notes: Be sure you check the Send Windows friendly attachments box in Mail when attaching the file. Be sure you add the .txt extension to the file name AppleWorks does not automatically add it). Tell the Windows user that the file is a tab delimited text file.

• I can't see the adjustments under the Adjustment tab in Aperture. Where is the data?

Several months ago I dragged photos from Aperture into a Burn Folder on my Desktop. Today I dragged the photos from the Burn Folder on my Desktop into Aperture. My photos are all still edited, but I can't see any of the adjustments I made under the Adjustment Tab in Aperture. Where is that data? How do I get it back?

I'll cover most of this because I'm too busy to trim it, but be sure to read Léonie's post.
barbst wrote:
Can you explain to me the difference between a Preview and the Master image? I checked my preferences and they are set "Photo Preview: Half Size" and "Photo Preview quality: 8 Medium".
The Master is now known as the Original. (Apple changed the term. I don't know why.) The "Original" is the term Aperture uses to designate the image-format file you imported into your Library. When you import, Aperture creates a record in its database and creates an Image that you see in the Browser and the Viewer. Every Image has an Original.
Aperture creates additional files that it uses. Among these are a Version, which is a text file containing instructions regarding adjustments and metadata changes you make, some thumbnails, which are image-format files in small dimensions, and a Preview, which is a JPG-format file that is automatically updated to include any adjustments you have made.
The Original is _never_ altered. Aperture is a _non-destructive_ photo developing workshop. "Non-destructive" means that your original files (the ones that Aperture calls "Originals" once you import them) are never altered.
The Preview is _always_ altered. It always is updated to include all the adjustments you have made to any Image.
As you know, you set the JPG parameters (size and quality) for your Previews in Aperture's preferences.
Does this mean that all the photos I have dragged to Burn Folders and burned to DVDs are lesser quality than my Masters in my Aperture Library? I thought I was backing up the Masters!
Sorry for the bad news, but the latter is not correct, and the former is. When you drag an Image from the Browser or the Viewer, Aperture creates a copy of that Image's Preview. (The User Manual should make this clear. Currently it is incorrect.)
Note, too, that your Masters (now "Originals") are never altered. What you might have wanted to back up were the Images in your Library. Now -- get ready for the weird part -- those Images do not exist as image-format files. There is no file that we can access in order to to back-up an Image. You can either create share-able image-format files from your Images, and back those up, or you can back up your Aperture Library, which, when restored, will give you the opportunity to create share-able image-format files from your Images.
Aperture is structured this way -- it saves the imported file, untouched, and text instructions telling it how to create your Images on-the-fly -- specifically to save the space you would need to store full-size files of every Image in your Library. Rather than save "the thing itself", it saves just what it needs to create "the thing itself". The storage savings are enormous.
This is why your workflow is (in general): import, make adjustments and add metadata, sort, group, and organize, and export _only when you need an image-format file to share with another program_. You then share that file, and delete it (because if you need another, you can create it by exporting from Aperture).
How about when I drag photos from my Aperture library to an external hard drive icon on my desktop? Am I dragging the Masters or Previews? If so, are the Previews lesser quality than the Masters in my Aperture Library?
When you drag Images from Aperture, you create copies of those Images' Previews. If you haven't made any adjustments, then they are Previews of your Masters (now called "Originals"). But Previews are JPGs with the dimensions and quality you told Aperture to use, whereas your Originals are whatever format, dimensions, and quality they were when you imported those files. The quality of an Image's Preview is always less than the quality of that Image's Original. (I'm using "quality" to mean "amount of useable data".)
You should test this right now. Create a new Finder folder. In Aperture, select an Image with adjustments applied. Drag it into your newly-created Finder folder. Then export it's Original into the Finder folder (File ▹ Export ▹ Original). Then export the Version with whatever settings you want (File ▹ Export ▹ Version). Compare the three files you just created.
I think I'm going to be sick! Please tell me it isn't so! I have 1000s of beautiful photos from trips on both DVDs and a Western Digital external hard drive, but I dragged them all from my Aperture Library to either a Burn Folder or a Western Digital icon on my desktop, then I deleted the originals from my Aperture Library. I did this to make room on my Mac Book Pro hard drive. This is how Apple One on One taught me to backup my photos!
I'm sorry  .
To back up your Originals, back them up. They are files. If they are in your Library, they get backed up when you back up your Library.
To back up your Images, either make files from them, and back up those files, or ... back up your Library with the knowledge that that way you can create new files from your Images after restoring your Library from your back-up.
To shrink the size of your Library so that it leaves more space on your system drive:
- remove un-needed Images
- relocate some Images' Originals to a second drive (almost always external). Aperture makes this easy to do.
Alternative, put your entire Library on a second drive. Libraries on external drives connected via USB-3 or Thunderbolt work fine.
In general, a photographer's commitment to an image-management database system (of which Aperture is one) is complete: it works best when it is all-enclusive. I recommend against removing Images from your Library either to save space or to archive them. My personal Library catalogues all my photographs. Using it I can find, and make available, any photo I've taken and decided to keep. Once I decide to keep it, it stays -- forever -- as a record in my Library.
Note that your "Library Set" (I just made that up, but it should exist) includes your Library package (that shows as a file in Finder) and any Referenced Originals that belong to Images in your Library. You must back up your entire Library Set.
The Geniuses at the Apple Store generally do great jobs in demanding circumstances. They are, by need, generalists who must be reasonably adept with a lot of software. It seems you were (badly) misinformed. Please recommend this post to the one who coached you, so that s/he makes sure that others aren't similarly misled.

• Pausing swfs and audio in a browser when the tab is out of focus

I'm trying to code my flash file so that the html will pause all swfs AND audio when the tab is out of foucs. I found this code on http://frontenddeveloper.net/wiki/index.php?title=JavaScript_and_VBScript_Injection_in_Act ionScript_3 and it works,but not completely. It only pauses the movie clips that are in the Flash file and not any that are exteranlly loaded with audio included.
How can I adjust it to pause the externally loaded swfs that are loaded to a mc within my main movie clip and the audio OR what should I use in place of this code? Someone mentioned on a different post that I needed to use a window.onblur funcition, but they didn't give details.
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.utils.setTimeout;
// This is a more "safe than sorry" setting, since multiple domains
// have entry into my site. Can be removed or hardcoded if you feel
// secure or insecure, as you see fit.
flash.system.Security.allowDomain("*");
// Throw any errors around to make sure somebody actually gets them.
ExternalInterface.marshallExceptions = true;
// This is not the most ideal way to toggle animations on and off, but
// it's thorough, generic, and simple. Iterate all movieclips within

// method would be to target specific clips using dotpath notation, telling
// each in turn to turn off or on depending on what we need.
// BUT this is just a demo, and what we're really interested in is the

JAVASCRIPTS
JavaScript needs to be wrapped in a tag, a cdata, and a closure
function in order to be wrapped up and sent to the browser.
Note that an ActionScript function will replace all instances
of "xxx" with the actual ID used for this SWF.
We're battling some major bugs and crossbrowser idiosyncrasies
here:
1) In Internet Explorer the 'onblur' event is implemented
incorrectly (as opposed to Firefox/Mozilla browsers). It is
wrongly fired when focus is switched between HTML elements
*inside* a window. As a result, we have to use onfocusout
instead of onblur, and keep track of which element is active.
If we focusout and the active element is not the previous
active element, then we haven't actually "blurred" and dont
want to trigger Flash.
2) Firefox has problems interpreting both getElementById and
document["swf"] when dealing with "twicebaked" object/embeds.
Adobe's method of finding the swf fails to address the fact
that document["swf"] sometimes returns an array in this
situation rather than an object ref, and getElementById
sometimes confuses name and id.
3) When a window is created in Firefox, it doesn't actually have
"focus" (event though it appears to) and therefore won't "blur"
unless you actually click in it first, i.e if you open up a
window, then immediately send it to the background, it never
gets the command to halt the flash. So we have to explicitly
focus the blasted thing to get it to work properly.
4) Because of irregularities caused by Ajax, the way browsers shut
down, and other factors, there's a good chance our swf won't
be there when a blur (or focusout) event occurs. Therefore we
need an explicit check within the event handler itself.
5) Finally, we want to wrap everything inside a wrapper-closure
function, to keep everything safe from being stepped on. Lucky
us, we have to do this anyways to get everything to fit inside
a single ExternalInterface.call event.
var js:XML = ;

I added this code and it removes the externally loaded swfs. I don't want that, I want them to pause and then resume when the tab is back in foucs. Also, the main code restarts the main movie clip upon refocusing too.
Added code:
function toggleAllLoaders(doAnim, loader) {
if ( loader is Loader) {
if (doAnim) {
loader.play();
} else {
loader.stop();
for (var i = 0; i<loader.numChildren; i++) {
toggleAllLoaders(doAnim, loader.getChildAt(i));
I added the new function to all of the places that had the "toggleAllClips" function.

• Smart Album : Inconsistency in the Date Type format used inside Aperture ?

Hello,
After using Aperture 2.0 for some days, I tried to create a Smart Album using as creation option for the Album the Date + "is in the Range" option which is leaving two blank fields for filling the two dates which are supposed to be the date limits of the pictures that the user wants to select.
My OS X is set to the italian language so our date format is the dd/mm/yy type.
When I tried to insert some dates in our format (dd/mm/yy) the SmartAlbum seemed to not work at all (not selecting any picture, or was coming out with weird results).
After checking carefully that there was no filter set which could prevent the correct visualization of the pictures I had no explanation for the problem.
At first I thought that this specific option was buggy as the other Smartalbum creation options (Keywords etc.) seemed to work properly.
Then I had the idea and I tried to use the english format (mm/dd/yy) for the two dates inside the date range fields and to my surprise everything worked properly.
So basically it seems that Aperture recognises the dates correctly only giving in input the american date format mm/dd/yy.
What is not so noice is that there is no check on the date limit correctness so basically it is possible to really mess up with the dates.
I'm also actually surprised the Aperture doesn't complies with the OS X date type which could seem the logical thing to do or at least is not consistent with the date type management inside the program because for example the pictures Dates are instead correctly listed in the List View of the browser according to the OS X date type (dd/mm/yy).
I was wondering what is happening in countries where the date separator is not the "/" but the "." like typically used in Germany which would add another variable to the software routine which is interpreting the date input fields.....
Maybe this could help other non english users who could have been confused like me on the same issue....
Did you notice the same behaviour ? Am I missing something ?

Smart Albums will search in the Folder/Project that is shown at the top of the search HUD as well as all Folders and Projects "below" in your structure. However, it will not search through any Albums in that structure. Here is an example:
You images are always stored in Projects (yellow icons) and lets say this is how it looks:
FolderA/ProjectA (this Project stores: ImageA1, ImageA2)
FolderA/ProjectB (this Project stores: ImageB1, ImageB2)
Let us say that you have two Albums like below but there is an image from ProjectB in AlbumA, which looks like this:
FolderA/ProjectA/AlbumA (this Album has pointers to: ImageA1, ImageA2, ImageB1)
FolderA/ProjectB/AlbumB (this Album has pointers to: ImageB1, ImageB2)
If you create a Smart Album below ProjectA it will only show ImageA1 and ImageA2 since it only search ProjectA and not AlbumA.
This may be the issue you have.
Are you 100% sure that the Project your Smart Album is pointing at does include the images you are trying to search through. As you see above then it won't find them if they are only in the albums below that project.
Here are a few rules that I follow in order to avoid getting confused over where my images are located: A) Only include images in albums below a project that are stored in that project. B) Create all my smart albums at top library level and if necessary add extra filters like project name.
Hope you understand.

• Conditional format in cross tab

Post Author: RobotSlave
CA Forum: Charts and Graphs
Hello All
Crystal 2008 12.0.0.549
I have a crosstab report in that repeats in each GF1 that displays values for several variables over an eleven month span, for instance a shortened data set might look like this:
FEB     MAR      APR       MAY ....
Claims             1233     876         666         888  ....
sold                 987       987         7 7         8 888  ...
etc...
I want to display conditional formatting such that if a value in the claims row is over 800, make the font RED for that column only. When I use a conditional formatting formula in the format editor font dialog, it makes the whole row red, when the values clearly do not all meet the required "800". I have experimented with making certain my value is a number and not a string, and I'm stymied. Does anyone have any input?

use formula field. Write your condition in that formula field and in select the display string option of the column in the report.Make the display string output as the output of formula field.for eg. @formula -
Formula Field if e>800 then conditionelse condition; Number -
column in field. Display string option (at the bottom of the field format object --general tab) map the output of the formula field

Hi Experts,
We are facing problem while customizing application wizard in EHP4.
Based on our requirement, we need to create one more tab named "Notes" to add instructions for applicants while applying for Job. It contains only instruction. To achieve this, we have done below set up.
1. We have created new WD component (WD window), OTR Alias
2. Created one more additional steps in T77RCF_RM_STEP called "Notes" and maintained step 1 information
3. In table T77RCF_RM_SEQ, under Application wizard (employee), we have added notes in sequence 1.
Now our new tab "Notes" is reflecting in application wizard. But while cliking on send application, we are getting error "The following error text was processed in the system GEG : Dynamic type conflict when assigning references".

• Changing file type format in Screen Capture (shift command 4)

You'd think this would be in a preference menu! But it's nowhere to be found in any apps preference or system preferences.... I've seen posts how to do it in Terminal... and people sell programs to do it.... but Tiger and Leopard have t built in.. sort of....
The default file format when using SCREEN CAPTURE (ShiftCommand4) was a .pdf ... but then it was changed to .png Some people can't read .png... so I wanted my captures to be in .jpg format.
You can change the file format type of your SCREEN CAPTURE to any of the following:
JPG, JPG-2000, TIFF, BMP, PDF, Photoshop, PICT, SGI, PBG, TGA
But first you have to have a file you want to change (say it is a png).
Open the file using Preview.
Once open, under File (in the menu bar) go down to SAVE AS.
There's you'll see FORMAT and a pull down menu. Choose which one you want...
Screen capture will now open your captured pictures in that format.
Crazy, huh?

The OP here was using a keyboard shortcut, not Grabber.
I did some further exploring. I just tried TinkerTool again, and again was able to change the file format of saved screencapture files to jpeg. TinkerTool modifies the com.apple.screencapture.plist file the same way that the Terminal command does.
This clearly works for command-shift-3 and command-shift-4, which save the screencapture image as a file. However, on looking more closely at the O.P.s initial post in this thread, he/she actually said
I use keyboard shortcut control/command/shift/4
When you include the control key in the command, the screencapture image gets saved to the clipboard instead of to a file, and you wouldn't normally be aware of its format until you pasted the clipboard contents somewhere else. I don't know where the OP was pasting it, but as was noted in the thread cited above by Baltwo, pasting a sceencapture image from the clipboard into a mail.app message results in a .tiff file being pasted. I also find this to be true in my system - perhaps this is what the OP was doing all along.
However this is an issue caused by the receiving app, not by the screencapture function. It's possible to look directly at the contents of the clipboard via:
Finder>Edit Menu>Show Clipboard
With my screenshot format set to jpeg by TinkerTool, I used control-command-shift-4 to save a screenshot to the clipboard. Looking directly at the clipboard in Finder as above, the clipboard image was a jpeg. When I then pasted the clipboard contents into a mail message and used Mail>File Menu>QuickLook Attachments, the pasted graphic in the mail message was a .tiff.

• Call a Function when switching tabs in TabbedPanel

I am using Allan Jardine's DataTables javascript library , along with the Spry TabbedPanel. I have one table in each of a number of Tabs. The table in the tab opened by default (or if I use ShowPanel()) is fine. However, if I switch tabs, the other tables, which were hiden when the page was opened, are not correctly initialised, and don't display correctly. Doing anything that causes the displayed table to be redrawn results in the table displaying correctly, and from then on I can switch tabs and the tables are fine.
DataTables has an API function fnDraw(), which will cause a specified table to be redrawn. Is it possible to cause TabbedPanel to call a user specified function when the tabs are swapped, so I can call fnDraw()? I think this woiuld solve my problem.
Thanks
Ron

Thanks.
But I found a simpler way. At the end of the jQuery(document).ready(function(), which initialises the datatables, I added
var ret=TabbedPanels1.showPanel("expiredquotes");
oTable2.fnDraw();
var ret=TabbedPanels1.showPanel("confirmedquotes");
oTable3.fnDraw();
var ret=TabbedPanels1.showPanel("openquotes");
Which opens each of the "other" tabs and redraws the respective DataTable while they are "visible". Then at the end I display the 'default' Tab. I only need to do this once, when the page is opened, after which the tables are correctly formatted.

Ron
