Losing wifi or wifi runs slow

for some reason I seem to be losing my connection to the internet or my download speeds are all of the sudden tanking.  I will be watching a movie or using an app and out of now where the movie will freeze or the app will say loading for what seems like forever I have cable broadband with download of 24mpbs and up of 3.27 mpbs using netgear n 150 wireless. those are the speeds I can clock on my laptop. Any ideas?

The photostream service took 2/3 of my download capacity.

  • New Macbook Pro 10.8 WiFi Running Slow - PLEASE HELP!

Just bought my Macbook Pro in December. My brother and I are the only macbooks on the network, as soon as he gets on his macbook, my macbook automatically starts running slower. As soon as he stops, it starts working normal again. I have tried refreshing my IP address and same problem
I am running 10.8.3 and it says I am up to date. WiFi speed is not an issue, router is good (brand new) and have never had this problem before.
Is this a bug? Is there a way to fix this?
    Mike

Just do what I said and post it please.  Continuously asking about it without knowing that info is pointless.  If your systems are identical, then neither of you should be experiencing any issues.  Think about it... if the systems are identical, why would your have an issue and his won't... under the same OS version and hardware.  Makes no sense.
Also, even if your router is brand new, it may not have the most recent version of firmware on it.  Check that.  And even so, some chipsets on some WIFI routers from some manufacturers don't work well with Mac's due to the Broadcom chipsets it uses.  It can happen, I've seen it with brand new Netgear products and new iMacs.  Changing the network config on the router for wireless technologies to use may fix your issue, but if it's a dual band router, you need to post what I asked for because that will tell you what speed and radio channel/GHz you're actually using.  Sometimes a ton of devices on the 2.4GHz can cause issues with others around, etc.

  • Wifi keeps scanning and dropping even after connected to home network.  Never had this issue until the update, and now my phone runs slow and terrible.  Horrible update!!  Any ideas on a fix?

It's important that you have a steady WiFi connection, ZealousEdge. What phone do you have? Is your phone unable to connect to any WiFi network? If you can, please try deleting the saved WiFi network and re-adding it.

my mac is running slow, the spinning beach ball constantly appears. it seems that when i am in the apple store with fast wifi its a bit better. genius at the apple store checked the hard drive, it's all fine. what can it be? can it be a software issue with the wifi?
also i noted that it has only been doing this since quite recently, before it was fine
    please help!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Since updating my IPAD 4 to IOS 7 my wifi seems to be running slower. At the same time it seems to be using less power. I wonder if Apple have tweaked the processor speed or something. Any ideas?

Since running IOS 7 on my IPAD 4 I have noticed that safari or Google APP are running slower. When loading data there is a noticeable delay in the 'bar' running across the screen. The IPAD also seems to be lasting longer between charges. I wonder if Apple have tweaked how the processor is being used for wifi.

Same issue on my 9 month old IPad4. Turned of all the new fancy additions but no real increase in speed.
One thing I noticed when I  installed IOS7 was that my free space Immediated jumped from 17Gb on IOS6 to 18.5Gb.
I then noticed the much slower performance. On IOS6 my pad performed so quickly it often brought  a smile to my face, now I'm watching and waiting while it staggers along loading a page(. Fibre Broadband 45mb/sec so no hold up there and this on my usual browsing sites so it's not their servers ) .
I'm wondering whether Apple have increased the compression of the system files, so they take longer to unpack - or is am I clutching at straws. Anyone else notice extra space after update.

MS Word is not an Apple product so it could not've downloaded with all the Apple software updates.

What program were you running to do that?
In any case boot from your OS installer disk and run Repair Disk from Disk Uility.

  • IPad 2 losing WiFi Router seems fine

The device is an iPad 2, just for reference.
About a year ago, our router went kaput, and we replaced it. I noticed, not only on the iPad but other devices, the range seemed to be not as good, with the bars one or two less. But, the internet speed didn't seem to be affected, so we didn't worry about it.
This router works fine with all our other wireless devices, so it doesn't seem to be in the router itself. However, the iPad wifi works just fine in other locations, so it doesn't seem like the problem is the iPad either. The iPad doesn't pick up the router unless within 3 feet of it. If you move beyond 3 feet, it loses the connection entirely.
A few weeks ago, the iPad started losing Wifi periodically, and then within the last week, it has become more and more frequent, until the point it lost Wifi entirely unless immediately next to the router.
I know this question has been investigated about 1001 times. I have looked at numerous questions and answers, and tried them all. Updated the firmware on the router, changed the brightness settings on the iPad, tried it in Static on the iPad, Every solution that people threw out there, I have tried and it has been unsuccessful.
Has anyone else run into this and/or found a fix?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at
    http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Lenovo G500 WiFi is slow

    I have a Netgear dualband N Router.
I have three computerson my wireless network , a Lenovo G500 and two Toshibas laptops.  The Toshibas each run WiFi at 135Mbps.
If I connect the Lenovo G500 to the router with an ethernet cable it runs at 100.
The router is 15 feet from Lenovo G500.  The  Lenova G500 on Wifi runs at 65Mbps or slower.  Sometimes only at 48Mbps.  The speed occurs even if it is the only computer actrive on network .
As a test, I installed a Belkin N wireless adapter on the Lenovo G500 and connected on Wifi 2 and it connects at 135 Mbps.  It is only the Lenovo Wireless adapter that slows the G500 down.
How can I increase speed of Wifi on Lenovo?

    hi Lenovog500,
    Try This.
Download this first  WLAN Driver (Atheros, Broadcom, Realtek) but don't install yet
Make sure you know where to find this later
    Now under Device Manager
right click on the Broadcomm 802.11 and select Uninstall.
Make sure to place a check under Delete driver software for this device
After the Uninstall click on view on device manager and select Scan for Hardware Changes.
Note that the Broadcomm may be back under the Network Adapter list
Uninstall it again and place a check under delete driver software.
You'll have to repeat the step until when you  don't have the option anymore to place a check under delete driver software.
If that happened click the scan for hardware changes one last time and then Install the driver I asked you to download earlier.
Connect to your wifi and see if that changes anything.
    Regards
    Solid Cruver

  • Ipads losing wifi

Lately my 3 iPads are losing wifi connectivity.
    I have 2 iPad 2 and 1 iPad mini.
Randomly, they all lose connectivity to the internet. Turning wifi on and off on the iPad usually fixes this issue.
My iPhone and MacBook however don't show that behvior.
    Any ideas?
I am running a 5th generation Airport Extreme with firmware 7.6.3.
    Thanks.

I did what you suggested. Turned off the whole network, and then tuned it back on, one device at a time.
While at first this seemed to have solved the issue, it did and does re-occur.
When I open my iPad from sleep and continue watching a streaming movie in Safari, after a few minutes the movie pauses by itself. Switching to Chrome to see if I can still browse the web then tells me I lost all wifi connectivity.
Turning off and back on wifi in the settings panel fixes this. I can then resume the movie.
It does seem to be connected to the iPad and not the AirPort Extreme, as I can still connect from my iPhone to the Internet, when my iPad lost connectivity.
What is strange though, is that this only started to happen recently, probably shortly after I purchased the iPad mini. But then, the other two iPads in the house (version 2), also started to show this behavior.
The only other change I remember was the upgrade of the AirPort Extreme to v. 7.6.3. My MacBookPro never loses connection, btw. The Airport's settings are the way Apple recommends them, leaving the channels on auto, using both bands for the same SSID (5.8 and 2.4ghz).
This is now starting to annoy me.
    Anyone has more ideas?
    Thanks!

  • IPad Keeps Losing Wifi Connection??

    Hi,
About 2 days ago, my iPad 2 began losing wifi connection. I would have to tap "Forget this network" and then wait a bit and then tap on the network again and type in the password. After that, the iPad would gain wifi again until about 5-20 minutes later, it loses wifi connection AGAIN. Sometimes when I did that it still didn't even work! And it also bothers me because it still has the wifi sign in the top left corner of my ipad screen, even if the wifi connection is not working. This has happened continuously throughout the past 2 days. Sometimes, the wifi would work for a good amount of time before it was gone again, and sometimes it loses connection after like 3 minutes. But all the other electronics in my house are perfectly fine, it's just my iPad 2 that's been doing this.
I tried to tap "forget all network settings" and then restart my ipad, but that didn't help. I'm not sure if it's the iPad's problem (since all the other electronics work) or if it's the wifi.
Please help! This is very annoying.
(And i have a new update which is 7.1.2, but that's been there for a pretty long time bc I always forget to update it. But I don't think that's the problem.)

If any of the above solutions work, please post back what solved your problem. It will help others with the same problem.
     Cheers, Tom
PS Make sure you have a good wifi connection when you update the iOS.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
