Loss of control file
Hi
My database is running on solaris 10. database verrison is 10.2.0.3.0
when connecting ot db after databases get started. it throws error
ORA-00205: error in identifying control file, check alert log for more info
and when I checked in alert log file
Thu Dec 25 18:39:04 2008
Errors in file /testdb/..n/../admin/../udump/mft_ora_7988.trc:
ORA-19502: write error on file "/oradb/../../arch/arch1_2162_623164752_MFT.log", blockno 30721 (blocksize=512)
ORA-27063: number of bytes read/written is incorrect
after browsing google I infer that we lost control file.
I dont have it backup
how do i recover it
Thanks in advance.
Do you have backup control file or auto backup control file by rman or not.
If you have backup, try recover controlfile from rman backup( you should know DBID).
Anyway If you don't have rman backup. so recreate controlfile (if you have backup control file to trace, you can use it):
1. Take a full backup of the database, including all datafiles and redo
log files.
2. Connect / as sysdba or as sys user and do a STARTUP NOMOUNT.
3. Issue the CREATE CONTROLFILE statement.
More information on Oracle.
http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/homepage
Example:
CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "TESTDB" NORESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG
MAXLOGFILES 50
MAXLOGMEMBERS 3
MAXDATAFILES 300
MAXINSTANCES 8
MAXLOGHISTORY 500
LOGFILE
GROUP 1 '/oradata/testdb/log1.dbf' SIZE 100M,
GROUP 2 '/oradata/testdb/log2.dbf' SIZE 100M,
GROUP 3 '/oradata/testdb/log3.dbf' SIZE 100M
DATAFILE
'/oradata/testdb/system01.dbf' SIZE 400M,
'/oradata/testdb/sysaux01.dbf' SIZE 500M,
'/oradata/testdb/undotbs01.dbf' SIZE 100M ;
4. Perform media recovery on the database.
RECOVER DATABASE
5. Open the database.
ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
Good Luck.

RC-50004: Fatal: Error occurred in ApplyDatabase: Control file creation fai
Hi guys,
I am cloning and EBS 12.1.3 from one server to another, and when Configuring the target system database server with ''perl adcfgclone.pl dbTier'', I am getting the following error:
RC-50004: Fatal: Error occurred in ApplyDatabase:
Control file creation failed
MOS is saying that it is due to wrong permissions on the /var/tmp/.oracle directory and we should give it the following permissions:
chmod 777 /var/tmp/.oracle
After giving those permissions and rebooting the server , and running the perl adcfgclone.pl dbTier script, I am still having the same problem:
RC-50004: Fatal: Error occurred in ApplyDatabase:
Control file creation failed
This is the contents of the ApplyDBTier log file (since the file exceed 30.000 characters, i am going to post the parts where the errors occur:

Please guys, how can I solve this problem?@Hussain Sawwan
Hi Hussain,
After successfully configured the DbTier and AppsTier with their respective post clone scripts the appstier was automatically started at the end.
But now, I can't seem to connect with my IE 9 and Firefow browsers.

Hello-
I was looking over some configurations that was setup by another DBA.
There are 3 control files created but they all are on the same disk/directory.
Control file auto backup is on to tape.
If there was a hardware failure and all three control were corrupted/lost then a backup would be used but
full recovery and RESETLOGS would be needed which would lead to redo data loss.
If I configured 1 control file on a seperate disk. I would be able to copy this one and create 3 files again and the database
would be started again without needing recovery if all else was fine.
If the control keeps track of redo logs SCN, Archive logs history and RMAN backups when these change then wouldn't another control file backup/ trace need to be done ?
Control File Trace only alllows to rebuild the database not to copy. How often is the need to taken ? Every change in the database ?
Backup to the Flash Recovery is another backup not an updated copy to copy from but to restore/recovery with.
Do have have these theories correct and my best setup would to send at least one to another disk.
Thanks-If there was a hardware failure and all three control were corrupted/lost then a backup would be used but
full recovery and RESETLOGS would be needed which would lead to redo data loss. No. If you lose all three controlfiles, you either
a. RESTORE a backup of the controlfile
OR
b. CREATE CONTROLFILE (from a script)
In either case, you do NOT need to do an INCOMPLETE Recovery. You will be doing a COMPLETE Recovery (if you have the Online Redo Logs). However, an OPEN RESETLOGS is still required. The %r in the log_archive_format since 10g allows ArchiveLogs to be retained through ResetLogs.
If the control keeps track of redo logs SCN, Archive logs history and RMAN backups when these change then wouldn't another control file backup/ trace need to be done ? If you RESTORE the controlfile you lose no information. However, you still have to OPEN RESETLOGS.
If you do a CREATE CONTROLFILE, yes, you lose information about ArchiveLogs history and RMAN Backups.
You can issue a CATALOG command to re-catalog available Backups.
Control File Trace only alllows to rebuild the database not to copy.A Control File Trace is to recreate the Controlfile. Not rebuild the database.
Backup to the Flash Recovery is another backup not an updated copy to copy from but to restore/recovery with. I don't understand what your statement or question might be here.

Functioning of control file when re-created
Hi friends,
we can recover database without data loss when there is a situation to re-create control file(for suppose control file is lost and no multiplexed copies are available) using NORESETLOGS option in controlfile script.
when we re-create controlfile, no SCN and checkpoint information will be there in controlfile. Then how controlfile will get the latest SCN and how it allows DB to be up and running.
please explain. thanks in advanceHi,
As per my knowledge I am explaning what will happen at Background.
As you said that control File is lost and no mutiplexed, In that scenario you are going to recreate the Controlfile. As we know that control file will be in Sync with All DataFiles (System etc.,) , which will hold the SCN numbers, When the Instance is UP with the newly Created ControlFile (Since scn is not available), it will get the Highest SCN Number from Current DataFiles and Check for in Sync with other Datafiles, whether SCN is in Sync with the Other data files or not.
And further proceed with Recovery Process Based on the Redo Logs.
As you said if the required SCN is not available in the Redo Logs it will Check for the Archive Redo Logs Based on the SCN i.e., (If Req SCN is < SCN in Redo Logs) It will Check for Archive Logs files.
Let me know in case If I am not clear or some where wrong in concept so that I can learn some thing inturn from others.!!
Thanks & Regards,
Pavan Kumar N -
Datafiles and control file corrupted
I have oracle 9i installed on windows 2003 server. A couple of days before our windows crashed and the system administrator took the backup of all files and reinstalled windows. After reinstallation of windows I restored the files backed up by system administrator and tried to start the database. I got the following error:
ORA-00227: corrupt block detected in controlfile: (block 1, # blocks 1)
ORA-00202: controlfile: 'D:\ORACLE\ORADATA\ORCL\CONTROL03.CTL'
All the multiplexed copies of control files are also corrupted. We do not have the backup since last few days and the database is in noarchivelog mode. Simple restoration to the old backup would be a great loss. Kindly help me to recover the control file and datafiles. All the multiplexed copies of control files are also corrupted. We do not have the backup since last few days and the database is in noarchivelog mode. Simple restoration to the old backup would be a great loss. Kindly help me to recover the control file and datafiles. You could try to re-create the control files assuming the database itself was closed properly.
However you should only do this if you know what you are doing.
In any case you should backup the database in its current state in case things getting worse by trying to recover. CHECK this backup twice!
In any case: Open a support ticket at Oracle. You will most probably need their help.
In addition to that - it look quite bad for your data. You should prepare for data loss (just to be sure; i dont want to scare you)....

Can I recover the database to the current time using a backup control file?
Can I recover the database to the current time using a backup control file? How far can I recover this database?
I have an Oracle 10g(10.2.3) database on RHEL4.3 system.
I have lost all the current control files and all the online redo logs, archived redo logs and all other files are OK.
Now I have to recovery this database using a backup control file.
Can I recover the database without any data lost?If
a) it was a Shutdown Abort or an Instance Crash (i.e. backgrounds died on detecting loss of redo logs),
b) redo logs are lost
c) data files are intact
You'd have to
a) Restore datafiles
b) Do an Incomplete Recovery to the last available ArchiveLog

Multiplexing Online redo logs, archive logs, and control files.
Currently I am only multiplexing my control files and online redo logs, My archive logs are only going to the FRA and then being backed up to tape.
We have to replace disks that hold the FRA data. HP says there is a chance we will have to rebuild the FRA.
As my archive logs are going to the FRA now, can I multiplex them to another disk group? And if all of the control files, online redo logs and archive logs are multiplexed to another disk group, when ASM dismounts the FRA disk group due to insufficient number of disks, will the database remain open and on line.
If so then I will just need to rebuild the ASM volumes, and the FRA disk group and bring it to the mount state, correct?
Thanks! You can save your online redo logs and archive logs anywhere you want by making use of of init params create_online_log_dest and log_archive_dest_n. You will have to create new redo log groups in the new location and drop the ones in the FRA. The archive logs will simply land wherever you designate with log_archive_dest_n parameters. Moving the control files off FRA is a little trickier because you will need to restore your controlfile to a non-FRA destination and then shutdown your instance, edit the control file param to reflect changes and restart.
I think you will be happier if you move everything off the FRA diskgroup before dismounting it, and not expecting the db to automagically recover from the loss of files on the FRA. -
RMAN & Control file ...
Hi,
Is any reason to use the control file of a production database as repository for RMAN ? If the disks where the control files are located will be broken RMAN can't be used for a restore & recovery.
Thanks for your answers,
PaulAre you basically asking whether it is better to use a control file to store RMAN backup information than an RMAN catalog?
The reasons you should use an RMAN catalog are -
o take advantage of the full features of RMAN (database clone for example).
o recover to another server even if there is a total server loss of the original server and database
o not have to potentially restore the control file copies from a filesystem backup to perform a restore
As someone else pointed out the DBID is stored in the catalog and you will need this to restore from complete database loss.
If you're using a third party product (allocating channels to sbt) then I would use an RMAN catalog to store all the backup information and on which tape they are.
You need to consider if you're a case where the RMAN catalog is not required. What type of disaster are you planning for?
Also, if you use the control file be aware of the control_file_record_keep_time

Advice on having a control file (online) on the same disk as backups
The following database files layout provides a no data loss configuration if the DiskArray #1, which stores the database, fails.
I have every think I need in the flash recovery area (DiskArray #2): backups, archived logs and online redo.
DiskArray #1:
- datafiles
- control file (mirror copy 1)
- Online redo log (mirror copy 1)
DiskArray #2: (flash recovery area)
- control file (mirror copy 2)
- Online redo log (mirror copy 2)
- archived logs
- backups
But some one raise the following scenario:
What happen if the diskArray #2, which has one control file copy, fails?
The instance should abort. Can it corrupt the current online redo, controlfile or a datafile?
If it does I would be in a dead end; of course I have regular offsite backups, but I may lose up to two weeks.
Lossing the database because the backup array fails is not acceptable.
Should I avoid any control file in the backup array?
Oracle recommend having control file copies in separate disk location and one of it in the flash recovery area.
Anyone have suggestions.
I am a bit scaredCan it corrupt the current online redo, controlfile or a datafile?Could that someone tell you why he thinks so ? I have seen loss of controlfile and loss of mirrored (duplexed) redo logs but that doesn't corrupt the good controlfile and redo logs and datafiles. unless someone or some process copies the corrupted files over to the good array !
You'd have to restart the instance with that controlfile excluded from the parameter file.
You'd lose your archivelogs and backups. If you have no tape backups you'd lose the ability to restore as well (being another "someone", I will ask "What happen if the diskArray #1 fails at the same time or 5 minutes after or 6 hours after diskArray #2 ?").

In case of Control File Failure, Create Control File cmd how get scn?
The following lines i picked from the
http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/asktom/f?p=100:11:0::::P11_QUESTION_ID:5033895918209
======================================================
1. We can use the 'alter database rename ' at mount stage to rename any datafile. Or is it not possible to rename the system datafile like this? Why?
2. What happens to the SCN information in the controlfile when a controlfile is recreated? How will the database sync the SCN with that of the datafiles?
If I issue a 'backup controlfile to <file>' at 8 am and then restore that controlfile binary backup at 10 am and try to open the database, it will give me a control file old error. I understand that it is because the SCN is not in sync. But if I issue a 'backup controlfile to trace' at 8 am and use that script to recreate a new controlfile at 10 am, why doesn't I get the error? Where does it get the SCN information then?
So what is the use of taking a binary copy of the controlfile. Looks like having a 'backup controlfile to trace' script is better than a binary backup. Do you agree? Why/whynot?
Followup August 16, 2002 - 2pm US/Eastern:
1) you could but I just always did it with the create controlfile statement.
When moving system -- I do it that way
When moving ANY OTHER tablespace -- i just offline it, move the files, rename the files online it.
2) it just happens.
The control file you create will read the files to figure out what is up.
I agree, I've never used a binary controlfile backup myself.
=========================================================
My Question- In the Point2 above "Where does it get the SCN information and how control file do SCN Sync with data files?
"1. The CREATE CONTROLFILE reads SCNs from the DataFiles. If the
database was last shutdown, all the datafiles are "non-fuzzy" and have the same
SCN (as of the shutdown checkpoint), If the database or some of the files are from
are hot backup, you cannot open the database because the SCN of some files is
older (lower) than others -- that is why a RECOVER (DATABASE or DATAFILE) is
required.
See http://web.singnet.com.sg/~hkchital/Incomplete_Recovery_with_BackupControlfile.doc
2. I'm not sure I agree with Tom Kyte's response
"I agree, I've never used a binary controlfile backup myself. "
to the question
"So what is the use of taking a binary copy of the controlfile. Looks like having a 'backup controlfile to trace' script is better than a binary backup. Do you agree? Why/whynot?"
If you have lost your database (storage/filesystem failure) and all your datafiles are lost,
you cannot simply do a CREATE CONTROLFILE from a Trace -- because the
CREATE CONTROLFILE has to read and verify all the datafiles specified in the
CREATE statement. If you have an RMAN Repository, you can use that to restore
your database files but otherwise, the RMAN information about backups and backupsets
are in the binary controlfile.
That is why it is important to take binary controlfile backups either manually or
using RMAN or using CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON. -

Hi friends,
I want to do homogeneous system copy.
I want to know the steps in homogeneous copy, and how to create control file from source system for target system.
And after that what activity is required .
thanks
Regards
Manojhi
while doing homogeneous copy sap will do some functinalaties through one sql file I think it will take control file backup and recreate it.
if u want to do manually
issue command
sql>alter database backup controlfile to trace;
look for trace file in udump dir from that file u can recreate controlfile or rename database.
before doing take complete cold backup of source.
start process with sap inst
it will do certain tasks ref in manual
let me know if u knoe some more inputs
