Loss of sound output and iTunes
had a power cut yesterday and not sure if its a conincidence but can no longer get iTunes to work. hitting the play button has no affect. Looking at the sound system preferences it shows no output devices and the mute button is ticked and greyed out. I can do nothing to reverse this. It's as though the system cannot detect the inbuilt speakers of the iMac.
Any help appreciated
1. Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
2. Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Choose the appropriate method.
Best.

USB (Mega stick), sound output and PS2 problems
==USB problem==
The MSI MEGA STICK do not work with the MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR.
When you plug it, its recognized, you can write on the MEGA STICK, delete files but cannot READ from MEGA STICK. It freezes while display "reading". I have tried on lots of PCs. Only my MSI motherboard do not work properly. The same problem with my 2 MEGA STICK. And i had tried Windows XP and Linux. Same problem. Others USB devices works fine. Even card readers...
==PS2==
My optical wireless mouse do not works properly. When i turns on the computer, it works ok. If i restart, do not work. Restart again, works. And go on... Only this mouse. Others MB works fine.
==Sound Output==
And also with my sound output. The eletrical one (coaxial).
It do not work with my 5.1 home system. It works fine with my old SB Live. It gets worse when i use my tv output from my Radeon 9100. It only works SOMETIMES when the tv output is not plugged in.
Thanks to all that could help me.Mega stick.
have you updated the firmware ?
No. It Freezes before being able to update. Also the update do not tell about solving this problem
"Firmware version: 2.05
Update items
1. Improve delete MP3 and voice files function.
2. Fix device will restart while forward/backward Voice file."
you do know that windows xp does not come with usb2 drivers.
sp1 does and you have to install them yourself.
go to device manager and delete all usb entries and reboot and windows will install the usb2 drivers next time you boot.
if you get a slipstreamed version of xp you dont need to do this as it installed usb2 drivers rightaway.
slipstream means a xp disc with sp1 on it.
My XP cd is already SP1. Also tried on BIOS to use only USB 1.1V
PS2.
tried to use the other ps2 contact ?
No. Could i use the keyboard PS2 to plug the mouse?
SOUND.
this is not my area but it could be a good idea to post what the equipment is.
have you tried the latest drivers from http://www.nvidia.com ?[/quote]
Its a brazilian brend. You wont know. CCE. Its works fine with DVDs, my old SB Live! and others. Only with my K7N2 do not work properly. Its an AC3 decoder. The problem gets worse when i use the Radeon 9100 tv out.
Look like the problem on this thread.
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=29572&sid=&hilightuser=26427
This is my old thread. Never solved. :-(
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?sid=&postid=319195#post319195
When i updated the BIOS, it got even worse. Not even with the tv output unplugged it never worked anymore...
Its very disapointed to buy an expensive MB and realized that it do not work properly...
Thanks yo your help. -
Sound problems (and iTunes affected too??)
I am getting VERY frustrated with my computer. Since purchasing it in September 2004, I have had no end of difficulty. Programs are unstable, crashing all the time. This was a problem with Panther. A few months ago, I took the computer into my dealer, and they installed Tiger on it for me. That solved the problem in the short term.
Lately, however, the whole system (10.4.4) has been crashing regularly: the black box with the script "hold down your power button to restart" or similar comes up and I have to force a restart. This seems to have come up since I last ran update and installed what came up, including iTunes 6.0.2. I also have been watching more DVDs on the computer than usual.
So now I'm having a problem with sound. When I press the F3 key for mute, all I get on the screen is a symbol saying the sound is up all the way. No mute symbol. But no audio either. When I press F4 or F5, no response at all. When I open the System Preferences, and the sound menu there, under "sound effects" everything is greyed out, under "output" there is no output device, under "input" there is no input device. I have tried plugging and unplugging external speakers and earphones.
I listen to iTunes a lot, so no audio is a problem. Further, I'm having a problem with iTunes. It was fairly unstable. Now it will load and stay open, but will not play files. It looks like it's going to (as in it gives the file's information at the top of the screen, and the "pause" key is made available and can be pressed though this does not effect the file which is not actually playing in the first place).
I have run Verify Disk and disk permissions. I have downloaded iTunes 6.0.2 again. I do not wish to do a complete system reinstall yet again. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.
Having used Mac/Apple for 20 years, I have often bragged about problem-free computing to my PC friends. Not this time, though, not with this machine. I've been very dissatisfied with it.
Thanks for any advice you can provide,
AA

1.33 GHz PowerPC G4 Powerbook, 256 MB DDR SDRAM Mac OS X (10.4.4) about 8 GB free space availableThank you for the suggestions, but feeling this problem was beyond my abilities, and not having time to fool around with it more than I already had done, I took the computer to the Apple Store in Toronto, where an Apple Genius did some stuff and fixed the problem, restoring sound and iTunes function. I'm afraid I don't even have insight into what the origin of the problem was to offer others who're having a similar difficulty.
Anyway, all the best.

No sound output and red LED in the headphone socket
Suddenly there is no sound output from the built in speakers of my Mac Pro 17 in. Sound is only heard through headphones and there is a red LED in the headphone socket.
Here's a tip: using the headset that came with my iphone (the one that has 3 bars on the mini jack instead of the usual two) seems to trigger this issue! I'll try to never ever use that headset again for my Macbook! This has happened before and always when I use the iPhone headset, but unfortunately sometimes I forget. Thank you for your sharing.

Creative sound cards and iTunes static
Okay, after having looked through the messages here it looks like everyone who has said they are having a problem with the static/audio distortion (unless the volume slider is set to 100%) are using Creative sound cards.
It looks like a number of us are even using the latest drivers and that doesn't seem to help.
Just to get an idea -- is anyone having this problem and NOT running a Creative sound card?I have an Audigy 2 ZS Notebook, and it was doing the static/distortion thing after I upgraded. What I did to fix it was to set QuickTime to output sound as 16-bit instead of 24-bit. It's really funny because the soundcard is set to 24-bit mode...

Mac Mini sound output and superdrive stop working randomly
Every once in a while the sound stops working and when I check the sound preferences it says no output devices are connected, even when I've got stuff plugged in. Doesn't recognize the built in speaker either. This has been happening for a while, but the most recent time I had tried to read a DVD and it wouldn't show up, and wouldn't come out of the drive when I hit the eject key. System Profiler wasn't recognizing the drive either. I fixed all this by shutting down and disconnecting all the cords from the back, as has worked for the sound problems before, but this doesn't seem to fix it permanantly. The sound problems seem to have started when I installed a security update a week or 2 ago, not sure about the superdrive problems. Anybody got any ideas?
I am having this same problem. It just started this morning (August 19th). No sound was coming out and the headphone jack in the back was lit up red. When I plugged the headphones in, sound came out of there. I unplugged them and sound came out of the computer as usual...but only for a minute or so, then the same problem. Nothing works in changing preferences either. Has anyone had any luck with this problem?

No sound output and preferences won't open
Hi all,
I am using (or trying to use) GarageBand 3 on my MacMini and I am having problems. I have a movie project I am trying to work on from iMove and I use the share function to move it over to garageband so I can edit the audio track and while in GB I can't hear any audio output from the computer. I see the level indicators lighting up like there is sound but I hear nothing which makes garageband useless as an audio editor. Also I can't seem to get it to open the preferences windows. I hit the command and nothing happens. I've erased the preferences files in my library found but that hasn't helped. Any ideas?Ditto to the above. I too am having the same symptoms of no audio within GB3 only after upgrading but levels light up perfectly plus I am unable to to address GB prefs without first rebooting. What's up with this? All other iLife '06 apps run fine on my G4 Digital Audio. This was after a fresh install of iLife '06 by the way running X.4.5.
I tried looking up the answers on the link that samccormack kindly provided above but nothing happens. I simply get an error message. Might you be able to let us know on this thread what the link was about or how to address the no audio and vanishing preferences that refuse to open up within GB3?

I have Bang&Olufsen Beoplay A9 and using it with my mac air OS X 10.7.5
my problem is I can see my Airplay device in iTunes, but I cannot see it when I go to System Preferences > Sound > Output and because of that when I play a song from youtube, sound comes from my laptop. How can I fix it? thanks in advanceHello there sjbrosjbro,
It sounds like you are not able to print to your printer because it keeps timing out when you try. I would use the troubleshooting steps from the following article to help you get that printer going again. It may be something as simple as re adding the printer if you've already restarted both the printer and the computer already:
Troubleshooting printer issues in OS X
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3147
USB printers and Bonjour-enabled network printers
Follow these steps until the issue is addressed:
Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel. Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again. Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
Contact the printer vendor or visit their website for further assistance.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Take care,

Loss of sound via external devices and odd issues when switching inputs.
When I plug in my headphones via the headphone jack, or my Logitech USB headset thru the USB port (either one), I get no sound coming out. Going to sysprefs>sound>output and selecting the approporiate device results in no volume control on keyboard and spinning beachball for several seconds. Unplugging device results in sound repeatedly going "pop, pop, pop" at whatever volume the internal speakers were last set at.
Something is skewed in the audio components but I am not sure what it is and am not sure how to proceed.Remove that in safe mode using >>Driver Fusion<< and install latest MSI driver: http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N660Ti-PE-2GD5.html#/?div=Driver&os=All

Vist Basic & XFI, random loss of sound and World of Warcraft Hardware enabling iss
Hello.. First off want to say that prior to reinstalling Vista last week, I had no had any issues with my XFI and Vista.. Since the re-install, while running World of Warcraft and Ventrillo, I get random loss of sound. And by that, specifically I mean, the sound shuts off, and I get a constant loud hiss noise that does not stop until a reboot is performed. If I just run WoW and no Ventrillo, I dont get the random problem and the sound runs fine. It is however a highly annoying issue that requires too many reboots in evening. Getting to the point of just trying the onboard sound, which I'd certainly rather not do.
Additionally there is an option in WoW that allows for Hardware enabling, which is supposed to improve performance. When I check this box and restart the game, the box is still not checked. Not sure if this is a CL problem, but something is wrong for sure! I'm using the latest drivers that are on creativelabs.com for my Vista 32 bit system. And again, didnt have these issues prior to the fresh re-install of Vista. Before that I had stepped up the drivers all the way from Vista. Thanks for any feedback on this. Not sure why your sound is cutting out... but as for WoW, it needs ALchemy installed to run with hardware audio enabled under Vista. I dont believe its in the list of titles included with ALchemy just yet, but adding it manually with the default options works just fine. Without doing this I believe the new sound core used in WoW will automatically detect that it cannot do hardware audio and simply uncheck the box whenever you try, where-as before it would work but still give you Software rendered sound (only instead of WoWs audio engine doing it, it was Vistas - not exactly an improvement). Incidentally, this not only improves performance but vastly improves the sound quality - especially when excessive numbers of sounds are being played. (eg Mass AoE effects on larger numbers of mobs, such as two Warlocks Hellfiring along with a Hurricane and Consecration while pulling the Ballroom - 9 mobs per group - near Moroes in Karazhan) Its possible doing this may also correct your cut-out issue, but its possible it wont. Ive been running WoW alongside Vent for months now under Vista w/ALchemy and an X-Fi and never had such a problem, but then I do also run Vent off the onboard audio so I can use a small earpiece and have voices clearly audible through game sound.

HP ENVY 17 microphone and sound output problems
Hey i have a HP ENVY 17, and i have been having some problems with the microphone, sound outputs and the sound in general. The microphone output haven't been working ever since i got the notebook in November. at first i thought it was problems with the settings, either on the computer or on Skype, which i used for communication. I tried with other Voice Chat programs such as Mumble, Ventrilo and TeamSpeak - neither worked. I got a friend over who knows a little bit about computers, and the only thing he could think of was that the microphone output was non working. I am using Steelseries 7H headset. Now i have to use the integrated microphone which often gives background or typing noise.
Lately i am only hearing sound on the right ear, i have checked my headphones with an iPod, so i know there is nothing wrong with them.
The third problem occurs when i turn the volume over 20% on the computer. It starts to make a background noise, almost like a waterfall, both with headset and without.
Another little problem i have is nothing to do with sound, but since I'm posting this already, i thought i could atleast ask. When i play games the top left side of the computer, right over the fan can get hot while the fan is working on hardmode. If i play really graphic-focused games, like Crysis 2, it gets super hot(i burn my hand if i hold it over the fan). Is this just because it's a laptop and the games demands too much? Or is it dust in the fan or something? And what can i do about it? That last question counts for all the problems
Thank you on beforehand
- KirrodI still need help, if there are anyone here who thinks they have any kind of solution to my problem. Like; how do i get it repaired? Send it to HP? How long will it take?
Im sorry if my english is not so good, it's my second language. It might be called microphone input, and not output. The place you put in the microphone cable.
Please help! -

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
