Loss of Speed Over Years

I have an Airport Extreme that I purchased in 2004. In the fall of 2007 I moved into an apartment building, and connected it to a Comcast cable modem. My wireless download speed at that time (per SpeedTest) was over 12 Mbps. Over the last 3 years it has progressively slowed, and is now often less than 1 Mbps.
When I called Comcast they had me plug my laptop directly into their modem via ethernet. This produced over 20 Mbps. They suggested that my Airport was dying and that I should buy a new one, yet when I took my Airport to the Genius Bar they told me it was working as expected and that a new unit wouldn't do me any good.
Does anyone have experience with this, and/or know why I've had a 95% reduction in wireless speed even though the cable modem is putting out 20+ Mbps? My internet really has become quite cumbersome, but I don't want to spend $150 just to see if a new router will fix it.
Thanks for all your help!

Here are some things to check.
Make sure the AirPort Extreme is as far away from any other electronic devices as possible. You may need to visit Best Buy to get a longer ethernet cable so that you can move the AirPort Extreme further away if needed.
Try to position the AirPort Extreme in a central location in your apartment/home, away from any outside walls where there will be more interference from other devices.
Locate the AirPort Extreme 4-6 feet up from the floor with plenty of free space around it. Think of it as a water sprinkler and you want to get the room as wet as possible.
If you have cordless phones, pick a time when you can turn them and the base stations all off for a few hours. Restart the network completely and keep an eye on things. If you notice improvement after an hour in your network speed, etc., you may have part of the answer. Look for phones that do not use the same 2.4 GHz frequency as most wireless networks.
It may not be your cordless phones. My neighbor...+across the street+...can literally bring my wireless to a crawl if he is in his front yard talking on his cordless phone. After weeks of trying to figure out why my network was dropping, I found this out by accident. I was at my desk in the office when I noticed my neighbor coming out of his front door talking on the phone and my wireless crashed at the same time. I might not ever have figured out the reason if it were not for this coincidence.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to do much about cordless phones at the neighbors or wireless security systems.
Try these tips out first and post back on your results. Next, we'll do a scan for other wireless networks to get an idea of the competition.
Finally, we'll review the advantages of using the newer 5 GHz band for wireless. There are very few networks using this band...for now. But, there are compromises that need to be understood before making a change to this frequency.

  • Slow transfer speed over VPN connection

    Hello,
Recently I setup an SSL VPN to connect to my parent's home network.  I have some computers there, and want to try to transfer files between my computer and the one at my parent's.  Over the VPN connection, I only get 128kb/s.  On both ends, they are 15Mbps connections, and can support internal copies of 4 megs/s.  I feel like I should get a better speed than that.  I looked around, and people suggested changing the MTU.  I have changed the MTU around, and not noticed any increase in the network speed over the VPN.  Currently the MTU is at 1500.  Below is a copy of my running config.  Any thing I'm overlooking, or is this speed normal?  Sorry, still relatively new to the ASA 5505.

    Hi,
Another option is the use of the compression command, this is usually enabled by default but maybe you can enter it due to is not showed in the running config, the command is compression svc.
Note: The command helps when we have low bandwitdh connections, the command reduces the size if the packets, for broadband connections this can decrease regular performance

    Hi SQLtl,
To achieve your requirement, we can directly use expression. For more details, please refer to the following steps:
Right-click the column contains Year field to insert a column with Outside Group-Right.
Then type the following expression to the corresponding cells:
    =Sum(iif(Fields!Year.Value="2014",Fields!REVENUE.value,0))-Sum(iif(Fields!Year.Value="2013",Fields!REVENUE.value,0))
Besides, we can also use custom code to achieve the same goal, please see:

  • How to adjust audio duration/speed over time?

I watched a video on how to adjust video duration/speed over time, using time remapping and keyframes, but it does not seem to affect audio for some reason. Is there a way to adjust the speed/duration of audio over time like you can with video?

Oh you need to do it in AE? That's... kinda.. unneeded but okay. Thanks!

  • Year Over Year Comparison for Multiple Years

I have a business request where the client is asking for a year over year percentage comparison for multiple years
    So for example
              Applications
    2015     5
    2014     10
    2013     22
So in year 2015 we can see that applications is currently down (5-50/10 - [New-Old/Old] by -50% compared to year prior
In year 2014 we are down -55%
Ultimately I wanted to display the following
              Applications
    2015     -50%
    2014     -55%
    2013
I have an idea of how to do this for a single year, where a presentation variable is fed in then I can just do this year minus previous year.
I was wondering, how can I do this calculation or presentation in OBIEE? Can this be done within answers? Or does something need to be done in the RPD?

As long as your model is correctly done with a time hierarchy you can just use the time series function AGO to get the value of previous year.
So in the formula you can calculating your delta in % comparing the current year amount and the previous one.
You can do it in the analysis directly, but if you will often need to access "previous year measures" would be a good idea to add it in the RPD so you don't need to write the formula every single time.

  • Year over Year

    Hi
I need to do year over year comparision. I have a key figure net value. When the users run the report, they should have to columns for the same keyfigure for two different years.
User should have the ability to compare the following.
If user wants compare 2002 and 2005, how to create variables for this. I tried offsets but it doesnt give the ability to pick years.
    Please help
    Thanks
    Ajay

    Hi Ajay,
You can do this by adding the Net value KF to your query twice. Drag it over to the columns once, and then again, You can restrict column one using variable for Year. If the value of the year in the second column is dependant on the year in the first column, then you can work with offsets, else you may need to provide 2 different variables.
    Hope this helps...

  • Change over year at the time of legecy upload

For the US tax books ACRS/MACRS we are using the standard depreciation key 'M200' for machinery asset class. The useful life of the asset is 7 years.
The depreciation key is calculating the correct depreciation but when we r creating a legacy asset the key is taking the transfer period as a change over period 2007 and it it is coming into next phase of the calculation in the key.
Change over year is completely changing the calculation of the key. Did anyone come across this situation If so please help

    Hi,
the web doesn't works like the desktop. If you create 5 rows and the user only inputs one and then submits it, you would have to make sure the created empty rows are cleaned up. So I would do 1:
    - create method binding in the pagedef file for the CreateInstert operation of the VO
    - create a invokeAction element in the pageDef executable section and point it to the CreateInsert operation
    - Set the refresh condition propety on the invokeAction to ${!adfContext.postback}}
This creates a new row on page load

    Dear Yogi.
you have configured a settlement profile for settling AUC's in t/code OKO7 and then assign this profile to your company code in t/code OAAZ. Check whether it is based on the error message.
OA84: do you have maintained period control Z1 for the fiscal year variant? Generate period controls for sure in OA84.

  • Year Over Year Data Analysis

Hoping someone may have some insight on how to leverage SharePoint 2010 Foundation to organize data for year over year analysis. We've just starting using Tableau to create dashboards based on SharePoint list data.  Although this works great to visualize
data as it exists today we are not sure how to organize the data to provide year over year data analysis.  One option that was suggested recently was to extract the data at specific periods and perhaps store that in an SQL Cube.  Perhaps
another option would be to create a new list and periodically take each list item and create a new item based on the day and the items value that were looking to analyze.  Our lists however contain over 500+ to several thousand items
which means the new list would grow fairly larger in a short period of time.   Can anyone share ideas on how we might be able to rearchitect our existing data structure to provide a better means of year over year data analysis?
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Hi Joe,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to do Year Over Year Data Analysis on SharePoint list.
If you want to compare the 7-day averages of two time periods using Tableau, then you can refer to the blog below for details:
Tableau Tip: Analyzing Year over Year Trends with Table Calcs:
    http://vizwiz.blogspot.com/2014/04/tableau-tip-analyzing-year-over-year.html
Or you can use another tool which is not free to do the Year Over Year Data Analysis.

  • OVM2.2.2 on HP BL460 G7 and Flex10: unable to get  network speed over 1Gb/s

    Hi,
I'm trying to setup OVM 2.2.2 on a HP BL460 G7 with Flex 10 module but I'm encountring issues with networking.
The flex10 module let you split bandwidth in 4 parts (8 interfaces (Emulex OneConnect 10Gbps NIC) with redudancy). In our case, we have setup 1 Gb/s for admin, 5 Gb/s for iscsi and 4 Gb/s for vm communications.
The problem is on iscsi and on vm, I'm not able to get speed over 1Gb/s. The driver for the cards (be2net) doesn't let you set anything (ethtool -s anthing : Operation not supported) and I think values I get are wrong. i.e. ethtool eth2 and ethtool eth4 :
    Settings for eth2:
    Supported ports: [ TP ]
    Supported link modes: 1000baseT/Full
    Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
    Advertised link modes: 1000baseT/Full
    10000baseT/Full
    Advertised auto-negotiation: No
    Speed: Unknown! (5000)
    Duplex: Full
    Port: Twisted Pair
    PHYAD: 0
    Transceiver: internal
    Auto-negotiation: on
    Supports Wake-on: g
    Wake-on: d
    Link detected: yes
    Settings for eth4:
    Supported ports: [ TP ]
    Supported link modes: 1000baseT/Full
    Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
    Advertised link modes: 1000baseT/Full
    10000baseT/Full
    Advertised auto-negotiation: No
    Speed: Unknown! (4000)
    Duplex: Full
    Port: Twisted Pair
    PHYAD: 0
    Transceiver: internal
    Auto-negotiation: on
    Supports Wake-on: g
    Wake-on: d
    Link detected: yes
Here, I get Supported ports: [ TP ] and Supported link modes: 1000baseT/Full. I guess those values are the ones that limit my bandwidth.
Does someone here managed to use such a setup with good values ? Are the parameters I get reality or only informative. I mean, to get speed over 1Gb/s, should I have the link mode to be 10000baseT/Full ?
    Thank You.
    Nicolas Di Pietro
    PS: driver informations :
    ethtool -i eth0
    driver: be2net

Does anybody use such network interfaces ?
I only need the output of an ethtool with a bandwidth bigger than 1GB to see if the value I get are good.
    Thank you,

  • Internet speed over wifi seems to be extremely slow and downloads go up till 50kb/s max but on the computer they go up till 600kb/s

As i said in the title, my net speed over the speed seems to be extremely slow. I had my adsl upgraded recently from 2mbits/s to 5mbits/s but when i had 2mbits/s the speed seemed to be fine and after the upgrade downloads just dropped down to 5-50kb/s when its supposed to be arround 300-600 kb/s. Is it a problem with my router or something to do with the iPod? Please help.

    lol81 wrote:
Sorry, but yeah im using wi-fi. WPA2-PSK security and radio type: 802.11g
The 802.11g standard for wireless networking supports a maximum bandwidth of 54 Megabits per second (Mbps).
That does NOT mean that the average throughput will reach 54 Mb/s. The "speed" terminus is merely used to describe the bandwidth of a connection, not its actual speed.
The common units are Kbit/s, Mbit/s and Gbit/s
The actual useful data exchanged on 802.11g networks will always occur at lower rates than 54 Mbps.
The 300 to 450 Mbit/sek bandwidth you will only get on a 5 GHz 811.n network with MIMO and (for the 450 speed) at least 3 antennas in your receiving unit.
But, as you described, the connection slowes down while transfering data, especially on your iPad.
This (except for a usual up and down fading) indicates, that there is either a bottleneck in your network or additional (unwanted) traffic on the net.
First to think on is, that Bluetooth and 811.g uses the same frequency and may interference.
First steps to do will be, following the troubleshoot as described under the link below.

  • Loss of sync speed (over 50%), openreach say line ...

    Hi,
    I hope someone can help!
For the last 24 months my sync speed has been a consistent and stable 7000+ so my BRAS profile was 6500.
Last weekend the connection dropped and now will not sync any faster than ~3000, so half the usual speed, well actually less because my BRAS is now 2500
I have checked all ADSL filters, connected the ADSL router directly to the master socket removing face place to disconnect the extension wiring, tried a different and known working router - another home hub and a Cisco, etc etc smae results.
The SNR on the line is unchanged at 35dB as previously be good for 7000+, so I can't understand why my sync is now 3000
At a sync of 3000 the SNR is 6dB (previously 7000 sync @ 6dB) which would suggest the line
is noiser than before, although no additional noise is heard on the voice line.
Openreach have been to visit - the line passed all of their tests. The openreach engineer also could not sync faster than ~3000.
He went to the exchange and redid the wiring to the DLSAM - no speed improvement.
He called me from the exchange and said that the DLSAM is "sending to me @ 7.2" - so I thought great, he's sorted it, then he told me no it would not be any better as "the line loses 1 meg for each km" .... so we entered a bit of dialogue about how the line could not be synced @7.x at the exchange end and 3.x at my end,  about line sync, DMT tones etc etc I think I was going over his head! He then went on about maybe it's slower because there are now more users on the exchange - again I explained about how the contention actually works on the VC to the BT core, not by BT Wholesale decreasing sync speed on the DSLAM sync... again going over his head....
So basically he thinks it's fine as the line tested ok and I doubt I'll get any further change.
Now here is the strange thing -
...it was only after the call that I realised that he'd have no visibility of the sync speed on the DSLAM so when he said it's "sending to me at 7.2" he meant that he was plugged directly into the DSLAM port with his portable tester... Now he should be syncing @ 8Meg when connected directly to the DSLAM in the exchange, so it must be a fault on the DSLAM port / profile?
How do I go about getting BT wholesale to move me to a different port? Not only has my speed decreased but I get random re-syncs.
    Please help!!! :-)
    Cheers
    Matt
PS provider is BT Total Broadband

Here's the other strange thing - I just reset the line to clear the stats, and made sure no other PCs were connected, i.e no significant volume of data being send/received, and in 5 minutes I have 160,000 FEC/Interleave errors - that's not right surely?

  • Wireless loss issues for over a year now.

    Hello there all.
So I kinda give up with BT in terms of support any longer, their answer to our issue is to continue to send out a replacement hub 3 and all that does is nothing.
The issue is this, our wireless will just randomly explode and start going haywire, it'll go off and on off and on overloading all wireless connections to it. For example, when this happens I can sit and watch on any wireless device in the household, all the avaliable wireless connections going away and coming back. Just open your wireless list, that shows all wireless locations you can connect to, and then imagine all of them going off and on like a flickering light.
We've watched this happen on every single device we own, we've even changed the wireless cards in the computers and still to no avail, as I said above BT's 'solution' to this problem is to just keep sending out 'brand new' (Yeah, right, they are all just refurbished gen 1's and I've checked each one for that) BT Hub 3's. This just isn't fixing our problem and seeing as their support just flat out doesn't care to send out an engineer to fix this I turn to you.
We've had this issue for over a year now, and it's infuriating as when it happens no wireless device can use the internet. Too note, we don't lose the wireless connection to the hub, oh no. But we lose the internet through it.
It's like an electrical capaciter reaching over it's limit, parts lose power then others come back on then they go off and others go on. It's like the wireless is being overloaded at these points in time and we cannot pin point it, because ther'es no pattern to it. It's all random..
If anyone can help, that would be amazing!
    -Chris.

if you have had a few replacement HH3s and still the same problem then it is unlikely all of the HHs have the exact same fault so maybe you need to look nearer to home in that there is something causing interference to your wifi signal
have you tried moving the router to a different location to see if that makes any difference?

  • Could we be looking at 80+ mb speeds next year?

Apologies if this has already been posted.
Just read something that caught my eye:
    http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/4663-bt-announce-higher-profits-on-bumper-quarter-for-broadband.h...
    Specifically:
"The company also mention that they "expect to roughly double" download speeds on their FTTC service next year and mention that speeds can further be improved as "the technology is fully future proofed"
    Thoughts anyone?

BT Openreach have indeed announced that they plan to increase the maximum speed by increasing the frequency range the they use for VDSL from a maximum of 7MHz to 17MHz which does allow for very high speeds potentially over 100MHz but Openreach will limit the service to 80Mb/sec. However as now the speed you get depends on the length and condition of your line to the cabinet and VDSL is not a long distance technology. There is a second technical change they plan later when they introduce something called "vectoring" which will give a second boost to a marketed speed of up to 100 Mb/sec.
What we don't know is what BT Retail will offer, they could charge a premium for the faster speed, give it to us free or decide to limit their offering to 40Mb/sec with a greater certainity that more customers will get that speed. They have said nothing.
Those who want to understand the technology and line length is predicted to impact speeds can read a briefing at http://www.ictregulationtoolkit.org/en/Publication.2957.html. A bit more about Openreach's plans can be found here http://www.ispreview.co.uk/story/2011/05/12/bt-uk-tops-5-7-million-retail-broadband-customers-and-pr...
