Lost connection to one of our network drives broken alias

I'am are currently having an issue with our Mac's in that I all of a sudden can't access one of the servers on our mac's. We can access others servers which are PC based but we have had a working connection for 2 years so it doesn't seem like a permissions issue but when I click on the server icon we get an message that reads "the alias cannot be opened, because the original item cannot be found" We can't fix the alias as we can't connect to the drive even though ping tests say it's there. When we try to connect via desktop/go/connect to server dropdown menu it still won't allow us to connect. We are running the 10.4.11 system would upgrading to the latest os help?

I have the white macbook. The first time I tried to update the Airport to 2007-0002 it failed, would not connect to wireless in WEB, WPA or even open. Had to do a complete restore.
Last weekend I tried again. I first made sure my router, a NetGear WGT634U had the latest firmware (I was missing latest), then I preformed a 'repair disk permissions' and created a full backup of my harddrive so I could boot and restore. Then (with fingers crossed) updated first to 10.4.9. After restart, no problems. I played around for 24 hours to make sure.
Then I repeated the process again (repair, clone, etc) and installed the Airport 2007-0002. After restart, no problems, I am able to connect to internet via wireless first time every time (again fingers are always crossed). I am using WEB security as it seems to be better with other items on my network (Tivo and HP All in one Printer). All I can say is start with a stable setup, do everything step by step and don't try to do more than one update at a time, that might be causing some people problems. Oh, and if possible, make a clean clone backup in case the update fails, easier than reloading from scratch.

  • Connecting an XRaid in our network

    Hi All,
    We have a network build around two XServes and Linux servers, where the one of our XServ is managing our work group. All clients are connected through 3Com 1G switch to the Xservs and their internal disks.
    We want to upgrade our system to hold 3.5TB using an XRaid. The XRaid should hold all home directories and some share points.
    1. Is it possible to connect the XRaid to our 1G switch or do we have to buy a fiber channel switch?
    2. If we need a fiber channel switch, which should we buy? How can we connect the fiber channel switch to our 1G network?
    Thanks,
    Ziv

    Ziv,
    To access the RAID a computer either needs to have a fibre channel card and be connected to the switch or connected over ethernet to a computer connected through fibre to the RAID. The Apple Xserve RAID deployment page does a decent job of illustrating the basics of fibre channel connections.
    As a drop in replacement for you current set-up you would connect the RAID to the Workgroup Xserve via fibre channel. The RAID would mount on the Xserve and you would then migrate your shares to the new "drive" and people would continue to access them as they always have. From the Xserve's point of view the RAID is just a really big really fast disk that it will use like any other disk. The magic of the RAID is that it overcomes the speed/size limitations of a single drive by ganging drives but it is still essentially just another harddrive at the system level.
    It sounds like you might be expecting the Xserve RAID to do more than it does - it is simply a mass storage device and needs some kind of intelligent interface for other computers to "talk to" for sharing. The exception to this would be to slice the RAID into discrete shares and hook everyone to the switch and have them see only their share. For more than a couple computers (usually servers) this is awkward and prohibitively expensive and should probably be re-thought.
    If you think of the Xserve RAID as buying a 3.5TB external drive with a fancy interface you'll be on the right track. Just like an external firewire drive you need to hook it up to computer and share it out for people to see it. Let me know if this is still unclear.

  • MacBook Pro can't connect to Time Capsule or network drives

    I have a MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz, Intel i7, 4 GB RAM) and for some reason it can not connect to either the Time Capsule or any network drives.  We were recently out of town on vacation and before the vacation, everything worked fine.  Now, that we are back, the MacBook will connect to the wireless network and can access the internet, etc but it can not access either the Time Capsule or any drives I have setup as shared that's connected to the iMac.  I go to the Network and it doesn't show anything as available to connect to.
    I have restarted both the MacBook and the iMac and even turned off and back on file sharing on the iMac.  I have even restarted the Time Capsule but nothing is working.  Both the MacBook Pro and iMac are running Lion (10.7.2).  All have the latest updates, etc.  Also the Time Capsule has all of the latest firmware updates.  Again, this was working fine last week.  Now this week, nothing.
    Can someone please help?  I use the Time Capsule for backups and the network drive for iTunes.  Without those, the MacBook Pro is missing a lot of functionality.

    It might help to reset the connection settings on your Mac using these steps one at a time until the problem is resolved, recognizing that, depending on your problem, not all of these steps will make sense:
    1) Use the AirPort menu bar item to turn AirPort off, then on again.
    2) Try to select your Wi-Fi network from the AirPort menu.
    3) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort item from the left column, then add it back.
    4) In the same panel as (3), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
    5) In the same panel, select the AirPort connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease".
    6) In the folder /Library/Preferences ( _not_ <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.
    These steps may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try.  Before you try these, if you have any special network settings on your Mac for things like DSL credentials, note all your network settings, because the latter steps will destroy them.  If you got all the way to the last step, if things don't work any worse than before, you can trash the saved SystemConfiguration folder.

  • Lost connection to one of my Airport express units. Serial number 44500WQV0. Message in Airport Utility is to use Version 5.6 to configure base station. I have version 6.3.1. Both airport express units bought at same time few years ago.

    Hello all.
    Lost my connection to one of two airport express units. Both purchased few years ago. Use them to stream music to house speakers via WiFi. I have v6.3.1 of Airport Utility. Message says to use v5.6 to reconfigure this base station.
    How do I do that, please?
    Mahesh

    You can use the following workaround to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on a Lion or Mountain Lion Mac:
    Be sure to read the caveats at the end.
    Lion / Mountain Lion's package installer will refuse to install superseded versions of AirPort Utility. Instead you will need to use a package extractor such as Pacifist or unpkg. Pacifist is shareware, unpkg is free.
    Download Pacifist here: http://www.charlessoft.com/
    Download unpkg here: http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
    Download AirPort Utility 5.6 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
    When the AirPort Utility .dmg file finishes downloading, open it to expand and reveal the AirPortUtility56.pkg package installer file.
    Directions for Pacifist (I do not have screenshots for unpkg but the idea is similar):
    Open Pacifist and from its File menu, navigate to the package and open it.
    Click the "reveal triangles" until you see AirPort Utility 5.6.app:
    Select it and then click Install from Pacifist's toolbar. It will then be installed in your Utilities folder, and you can quit Pacifist.
    The most recent version of AirPort Utility included with Mountain Lion should be used to configure 802.11n - capable AirPort Base Stations. Make no attempt to delete it. It and the older version (which will bear the unique name "AirPort Utility 5.6") can peacefully coexist. Use the older version only as necessary for older AirPort Base Stations that cannot be administered any other way.
    If you happen to have an archived copy of the AU 5.6 app somewhere, such as a Time Machine backup or equivalent, you can simply restore it or drag the app to your Mountain Lion system's Utilities folder instead of resorting to the above procedure. It will run without complaint. It is only the package installer that is the problem.
    Keep in mind that Apple's decision to abandon support for the original AirPort Express and AEBS was for reasons known only to them. Remember that you are using obsolete equipment, should some future OS X feature not work for you.

  • Connect Windows XP to Mac Network Drive

    I have a little wireless home network between two Macs and an Airport Extreme. I have a Mac-formatted external drive connected to the Airport Extreme, used for mostly for file sharing between the two Macs. I also have a Windows XP (SP3) laptop connected to this Airport Extreme for access to the Internet, and I would like to be able to access the external drive as a network drive, as well. I have been trying to map the external network drive via Windows XP, but it doesn't show up anywhere. The "network" doesn't even show up in Windows Explorer.
    Is what I'm trying to do even possible? If so, can someone point me in the right direction to set it up correctly?
    I appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Thank you for responding.
    I have managed to partition the drive using the Mac using the latest leopard (10.5.6) using GUID and Mas OS extended (journaled). PC partition was Master Boot and whatever the MS-Dos option was. The PC partition works.
    I connected to the PC and the PC partition is recognized and shared. However the Mac Partition does not show and you cannot see it through the network from the mac either.
    I am new to the Mac OS X so bare with me please. Is what I am asking it to do possible? Or do you have to purchase a Time Capsule to use TM, unless it is connected via a USB or Firewire?
    I am not sure what #4 Mac Running 10.5 server (where do I check that) or what #5 "SAN volumne managed by Apple's Xsan file system" are.
    Can you kindly explain, and if there are steps I need to know, please elaborate. I appreciate the help.
    Is is possible to run time machine a Mac partition of an external drive, connected to a PC (Win xp media) and accessed through a wireless gateway network.

  • Connection Failed Prompt Caused by Network Drive Shortcut

    So I've been having this problem where I've added Network Drives to the shortcuts column in my finder window... It seems that when these drives are not connected Finder is still looking for them and I get periodic "Connection Failed" prompts telling me that the computer is unable to mount these drives.
    Is there anyway to correct this issue?

    I think Finder thinks that anything in the Sidebar is mounted. A Dock icon or alias might work.

  • I am having difficulty connecting apple tv to our network via ethernet cable.

    I am trying to connect to an apple tv on our office network. It seems to pick up the network configuration but doesnt connect when I turn on home sharing. We have a proxy server for connections to the internet so I dont know whether this is the show stopper or something else like incorrect setting of date and time.  I thought I could set up and use the apple tv without a connection to the internet. Any advice would be appreciated. If an internet connection is absolutely necessary may be I could set up an Airport that talks to our proxy server.

    COMPUTERS  SETTINGS means AppleTV is not accessing the Internet network.
    By "changing the lead" I assume you mean you've made certain you are using a proven / known working Ethernet cable and you've also attempted, unsucessfully, to connect via WiFi ?
    If those things are true it sounds like you need to consult the school network administrator for onsite assistance.
    I ran into this problem once but did not have time to work through it. I will duplicate portions of your problem today to see if I can better resolve your question

  • Symbolic links on samba network drives broken?

    Note: I first posted this in Apple.com > Support > Discussions > Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard > Using Mac OS X Leopard where it was suggested I post here. In my readings it looks like 10.6 may solve some of this but I'm not sure.
    I'm seeing the following sort of behaviour on all of the macs I have tested in the following configuration:
    Network file server:
    Solaris 10
    samba 3.4.2
    Macs:
    Leopard 10.5.6
    Connect to exported folders via smb in finder "connect to server". In the examples below abc123 is a remote folder.
    Open terminal and try the following tests:
    1. Attempting to remove a symbolic link fails.
    * cd /Volumes/abc123/tmp
    * touch foo
    * ln -s foo .bar # this works
    * rm .bar # fails with no message
    * rm foo # succeeds
    * rm .bar # fails with no message
    If the symbolic link is to a socket then you at least get a message when rm fails ("rm: .parentlock: No such file or directory" as an example for a link created on the remote drive by Thunderbird or Firefox).
    2. Removing linked file removes unlinked file??
    * touch foo
    * ln -s foo bart
    * touch ._bart
    * ls -la # observe that ._bart exists
    * rm bart
    * ls -la # observe that bart still exists, but that ._bart is gone!!!
    3. Removing linked file does not work.
    * ln -s bart ._bart
    * rm bart # fails
    4. Hard links do not delete either.
    * touch foo
    * ln foo ._bart
    * rm foo
    * ln -s bar ._bart # ln: ._bart: File exists
    * rm ._bart # rm: ._bart: No such file or directory
    5. Symbolic links are copied instead of the file contents.
    * touch foo
    * ln -s foo ._blaht
    * cp ._blaht /tmp
    and observe that, in /tmp, you have "._blaht -> foo" instead of the actual file.
    So can anyone else reproduce any of the above problems? In my limited searching for samba related problems I did not see any posting about this type of situation. Also, everything works just fine on local drives.

    Depending on the filesystem, Mac OS X creates ._foo files when you create a foo file, so you'll probably have to live with that. For example, for each file on my FAT32-formatted USB flash drive there is a ._xxx file. Others may be able to explain what these things are. I'm pretty sure they contain file metadata, perhaps like .DS_Store files created for other file systems.

  • Powershell script to search a network drive for .mdb files and export them to CSV file

    Hello all,
    I'm trying to search one of our network drives for old .mdb files, I want to write the name, location and date last modified to a csv file.
    Get-WmiObject -Class CIM_DataFile -Filter "Drive='S:' And Extension='mdb'
     AND ObjFile.drive
     AND objFile.FileName
     AND objFile.FileSize
     AND objFile.LastWriteTime" |
    Export-CSV c:\mdb_search\mdbfiles.csv\
    Obviously this isn't working or I wouldn't be posting.  I've tried many different examples from the net with no joy for now.
    Thanks for any help you can offer.

    Thanks, that did the job.
    Cheers, you're welcome.
    How do I get the powershell cursor to return to C:> ?
    Should I use "exit" or "break" ?
    Neither, the console will return to a prompt when the search has been completed.

  • Staying connected to one network

    Hello,
    I work at a museum and we are trying to develop a program where we use the iPod Touch as an interactive tour device. The one thing I was wondering is if it is possible to have the iPod Touch stay connect to one designated wifi network. There are several connections in our vicinity, including a really bad free network, and I would prefer to utilize the museum's wifi. Is this possible at all? I'm not too knowledgeable on networks. If I have a static IP set up for a network, would it default to that?
    Any help would be so appreciated!
    Thanks!
    topher

    Yeah, I think its when the wifi suddenly develops problems that I am worried about. I don't want people running into the crap city wide free wifi. Thanks for all the comments.
    I'm still wondering about the static IP though.

  • Cannot connect network drives through network switch

    macmini cannot see network drives connected to airport extreme.  Network drives are connected  through dlink 48 port 1 gig switch.How can
    I edit airport extreme to see these drives?

    The switch will be unlikely to have anything to do with the problem.. but bypass it and see.. plug a laptop or something directly into the extreme.. do the disks now show up?? If not the Extreme setup is wrong.. if they do and you can transfer files.. something is odd with the switch and you will need to work with dlink to figure if it is blocking some protocol.. Tell us how this test works out.. you can force the mac to use SMB by manually mounting the drive.. No switch is going to block SMB.
    Do the external drives show up on the extreme in the airport utility?
    Have you turned on file sharing?
    Make sure in finder preferences you have enabled network drives.
    No go, are the drives formatted correctly.. they must be HFS+ or FAT32 format..
    I used to say GUID partitioned but not sure now..

  • ITunes wil not download iTunes Store purchases to my network drive

    I have iTunes 8.2.1.6 loaded. I can't remember when the last upgrade came through and not sure when the downloads to my network drive stopped working, but they used to work.
    I first set-up iTunes on my Win XP laptop in January 2008. I already had my network set-up at home and had been storing my music and media on a network drive for long before that. Initially everything was fine, iTunes connected and created the library. It also allowed me to download from the store directly to my mapped network drive.
    The library still works and still picks up all the music and media from my network drive. The problem is, whenever I try to purchase from iTunes Store, the download fails and says the disk is full (it's not - there's 70GB left on it). If I set my iTunes Music Folder location to be local C: drive, it downloads with no issue. Problem is I only have between 2 and 5GB left on my C: drive and it's only a 30GB drive to begin with, so way too small for my library.
    Recently (July) I purchased a TV Episode from iTunes Store. It tried to download 6 separate instances, every one failed. When I switched my iTunes Music Folder location to C:, it finally downloaded. I switched my folder location back to the network on completion and manually moved the TV episode to the network (it was a HD+SD download, so multiple copies, and the meta data / library entry now seems to be screwed!).
    Today I have tried to download an album and I get the same error about the network disk being full! This is too much hassle and not endearing me in anyway to Apple!
    If anyone has any ideas as to how I might resolve this, I'd be very grateful.
    Cheers

    I am having a similar problem for 3 weeks now, and wasted hours messing with our Firewall software, etc. thinking that was the problem. Thanks to your post I tried changing the Itunes Music Folder location temporarily to our C: drive, and voila-- suddenly downloads can be completed. We choose to keep our Itunes library folder on a separate networked hard drive, and ever since we updated to Itunes 8.2.1.6 we've been unable to download purchased music to this drive. We had no problems for the last 2 years with previous versions of Itunes & our preference configurations for the library. The error message I got when I tried to download purchased content (both music & video) was "error (-48) unknown error. unable to complete download... check network connection and try again". Of course our PC WAS connected to the internet, and I could access the Store and download from other websites, just not Itunes.
    Could this be related?? : Looking in my Itunes folder in the networked drive, I tried to delete the Downloads folder (after reading a suggestion in a forum to delete purchased music files if they were partially downloaded, and then try to download them again). I have been unable to delete or rename this folder, getting this error message: "Cannot delete Downloads. The file or directory is corrupted & unreadable".
    A separate, Itunes bug related to Music Folder location-- we also had a major problem trying to get the location of all our music properly identified in Itunes library with this latest software version. We had to wipe our C: hard-drive due to a virus, and when we downloaded the updated Itunes software & set the preferences to point to the library on our networked drive, it isn't properly identifying thousands of the files (we have ~10,000 songs. The "Consolidate files" feature is very buggy, and only worked for maybe 1/5 of the files before stopping. We don't want to keep trying to run it, because we are afraid we'll end up with even more duplicate "ghost" files than we have now ("Unable to locate file" under "Get info" the "where" field is blank. We've had to manually load folders from the networked hard drive one by one, using the
    "Add Folder to Library" feature. This is taking forever, as this needs to be done for 100's of artist folders, then we have to delete the duplicate music files that still appear in the library!!

    When you say that your program fails, are you referring to the same thing as your LabVIEW Application that is reterieving data? If so, what do you mean by it fails? Is there an error message? Does it Crash? What happens when it "fails"?
