Symbolic links on samba network drives broken?

Note: I first posted this in Apple.com > Support > Discussions > Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard > Using Mac OS X Leopard where it was suggested I post here. In my readings it looks like 10.6 may solve some of this but I'm not sure.
I'm seeing the following sort of behaviour on all of the macs I have tested in the following configuration:
Network file server:
Solaris 10
samba 3.4.2
Macs:
Leopard 10.5.6
Connect to exported folders via smb in finder "connect to server". In the examples below abc123 is a remote folder.
Open terminal and try the following tests:
1. Attempting to remove a symbolic link fails.
* cd /Volumes/abc123/tmp
* touch foo
* ln -s foo .bar # this works
* rm .bar # fails with no message
* rm foo # succeeds
* rm .bar # fails with no message
If the symbolic link is to a socket then you at least get a message when rm fails ("rm: .parentlock: No such file or directory" as an example for a link created on the remote drive by Thunderbird or Firefox).
2. Removing linked file removes unlinked file??
* touch foo
* ln -s foo bart
* touch ._bart
* ls -la # observe that ._bart exists
* rm bart
* ls -la # observe that bart still exists, but that ._bart is gone!!!
3. Removing linked file does not work.
* ln -s bart ._bart
* rm bart # fails
4. Hard links do not delete either.
* touch foo
* ln foo ._bart
* rm foo
* ln -s bar ._bart # ln: ._bart: File exists
* rm ._bart # rm: ._bart: No such file or directory
5. Symbolic links are copied instead of the file contents.
* touch foo
* ln -s foo ._blaht
* cp ._blaht /tmp
and observe that, in /tmp, you have "._blaht -> foo" instead of the actual file.
So can anyone else reproduce any of the above problems? In my limited searching for samba related problems I did not see any posting about this type of situation. Also, everything works just fine on local drives.

Depending on the filesystem, Mac OS X creates ._foo files when you create a foo file, so you'll probably have to live with that. For example, for each file on my FAT32-formatted USB flash drive there is a ._xxx file. Others may be able to explain what these things are. I'm pretty sure they contain file metadata, perhaps like .DS_Store files created for other file systems.

  • Lost connection to one of our network drives broken alias

    I'am are currently having an issue with our Mac's in that I all of a sudden can't access one of the servers on our mac's. We can access others servers which are PC based but we have had a working connection for 2 years so it doesn't seem like a permissions issue but when I click on the server icon we get an message that reads "the alias cannot be opened, because the original item cannot be found" We can't fix the alias as we can't connect to the drive even though ping tests say it's there. When we try to connect via desktop/go/connect to server dropdown menu it still won't allow us to connect. We are running the 10.4.11 system would upgrading to the latest os help?

    I have the white macbook. The first time I tried to update the Airport to 2007-0002 it failed, would not connect to wireless in WEB, WPA or even open. Had to do a complete restore.
    Last weekend I tried again. I first made sure my router, a NetGear WGT634U had the latest firmware (I was missing latest), then I preformed a 'repair disk permissions' and created a full backup of my harddrive so I could boot and restore. Then (with fingers crossed) updated first to 10.4.9. After restart, no problems. I played around for 24 hours to make sure.
    Then I repeated the process again (repair, clone, etc) and installed the Airport 2007-0002. After restart, no problems, I am able to connect to internet via wireless first time every time (again fingers are always crossed). I am using WEB security as it seems to be better with other items on my network (Tivo and HP All in one Printer). All I can say is start with a stable setup, do everything step by step and don't try to do more than one update at a time, that might be causing some people problems. Oh, and if possible, make a clean clone backup in case the update fails, easier than reloading from scratch.

    Have you tried the delay verb from the StandardAdditions suite?

  • Workaround for slow Bridge when network drive is inaccessible?

    Hello all,
    Hoping someone has some information regarding an issue I'm having with my workflow and Bridge. I have CS6 installed and am using the 64bit version of Bridge for file management. I work from 2 locations at the moment and have a portable drive that I take with me from place to place with my work files on it. In one location I can plug the drive directly into my system via USB, but in the other location (for various reasons) I have to plug it in elsewhere and access the drive through a network. This all works fine and I have no issues with getting to my files in general. Where I do get an issue however is when I start trying to add shorcuts to the drive within the "Favorites" menu in bridge.
    The short of it is that as long as I have a shortcut to the networked drive in the Favorites menu, Bridge will run EXTREMELY slow when I am at the work location where I am accessing the drive directly. It appears that Bridge is trying to look for the networked drive on all the networked computers at that workplace every time I try to access a file or even use the menu system within Bridge (to right click a file for properties for example). I can alleviate the issue by removing the networked drive from my favorites or disconnecting form the internet (that one is not a practical option however), at which time Bridge stops trying to constantly look for the drive eveywhere and returns to normal speed.
    This isn't a horrible issue for me, it just creaates a lot of repeat work of having to navigate to the network every time I open bridge again at the location where I access the drive remotely, or having to constantly re-add the networked drive back into the favorites every time... then having to remove it again before use at the other location and so on. Is there a way to adjust or change Bridge's behavior to basically tell it that if the specific drive isn't available after the first attempt to ignore it from then on unless I specfically click on the favorites link? Or in lieu of that, is there a way to have alternate "profiles" within Bridge that have seperate favorites etc. so that I can switch back and forth depending on the location I am at?
    Like I said, not a horrible issue, but I really like having the quick, easy access to the drive that the favorite menu provides and would love to have a work around if one is possible. I realize that this setup is not common and so I might just have to deal, but if there is a super user solution or something I can tweak in a config file somewhere I would love to know! Thanks for the input and advice in advance!

    Thanks for taking the time to respond guys! Yeah, I didn't think there would be any easy answer to this one. I actually have never had any issues running Bridge with any network I've been on with the exception of the lag when the network drive isn't present. Or to be more specific, severe lag when the networked drive is stored in favorites and then is absent in a situation where there is another different network of computers present. Don't know if it will help anyone who is trying to connet to a network drive etc. but all I do to get Bridge to "see" the network drive is navigate to the desired network drive or folder in Windows Explorer and then drag the drive or folder icon over from the Windows Explorer browser into my favorites area in Bridge. It drops the network link right into the favorites menu complete with a special network icon for the link. That has proven to be the fastest way for me to get a correct and functional connection to a network drive stored in Bridge. I was doing this with Bridge CS5 as well and it has always worked great for me.
    For my network drive situation specifcally, I actually link to the entire drive as It's used solely for my design work. It's uniquely named with a title specific to me and my business so it definitely wouldn't be sharing a common name with any other drives or folders on another system on the network. I save the link to the network drive in my favorites and then I only ever have to click that to get to the root directory of the drive and navigate to whatever I need. Works great and super fast at the location where I need to use the network drive. Maybe I don't have hiccups like some because my computer has a reserved IP for that network tied to the MAC address of my computer so it is always the same IP every time.
    The functionality I would like is actually very close in Bridge, with the only issue being that it insists on searching other computers on the network after every process it does if the network drive isn't present. The location I work at that doesn't use the network drive setup has 5 computers linked up to their network and so I guess it's scouring each of those every time I do any single thing in Bridge, looking for the long lost network drive lol! I have to confess this is strange behavior and really seems like a bug (albeit maybe a minor one due to the unusual workflow method) to me and Bridge is the only software I have that does this type of behavior. I can't really think of a good reason why you would need Bridge to look for a drive or folder in a location other than the one you have specified in the favorite path for it. I mean what if you have 2 copies of the same folder in different locations for backup purposes? You wouldn't want Bridge taking the initiative on it's own and accessing your backup folder without telling you,  especially if there are legacy versions of a file you wish to retain in the backup location.
    If anyone ends up having a solution for this I would love to hear it! Otherwise I'll just have to hope that Adobe eventually buffs up the network functionality of Bridge down the road and in the meantime add and remove the favorites path all the time. I would think smooth network functionality would be increasingly needful and important however. I mean Adobe even offers a cloud service version of their software... That implies to me that they are aware that more and more work will be done "in the cloud" and over networked scenarios. I have my fingers crossed! Thanks again for the info guys!

  • Networked Drives and Symbolic Links in Mavericks

    So I have tried this a few times on my own... and I ended up deleteing all my contect with sudo in terminal.....  I have everything restored now... but before I proceed, i thought I would get some help from those that know alot more...
    Here is the scenario..  I have a MBP Late 2013 with mavericks installed..  I have a Networked drive at smb://192.168.1.1/  that is mounted and and accessable through finder no problem, and I have it set to reconnect at login so its always there....  there is no permissions for the networked drive its accessable to everyone...  I want to take my itunes music and put it on the networked drive at smb://192.168.1.1/Music and have itunes access it from there like it was on the local drive....  so I started reading up on symbolic links
    I have had no luck with ln -s in terminal, i keep getting told the directory doesnt exist... this is the exact line i have been triying  [ln -s smb://192.168.1.1/Music ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music]  i thought it may have been a permission issue hence my ussage of sudo... but because of my ignorance I just ended up deleting everything..... what am i missing or doing wrong...  someone please help!
    Anthony

    Just for some clarification...
    A simple saying that someone told me ages ago...   "root is God"
    When you use the sudo command you are doing the command as root.  The "rm" command means remove,  the "-r" means that you want the command to be done recursively so it will do the same command in any nested folders, and the "f' means to force the command..  even if it has any errors or is a file that root knows that you shouldnt do a command on..
    So basically you told god to remove everything in your music folder, no matter how deep its nested, even if doing so would be immoral and against gods better judgement.

  • How to get rid of samba reference in network drive list

    My server died (NOWS); battery on ups failed; that is all fixed now;
    When I first booted it, none of us could log on (I should have just waited a while); I went to Remote Manager and noticed a lot of things not running and loaded them all.
    We all logged in.
    Later I noticed that when I'm browsing the drives in "My Computer" on Windows XP, instead of just showing the drive it now says "Sys on 'Samba 3.0.36-0.13.14.1-2500-SUSE-CODE10 (Hbwv)' (F:)"
    I rebooted the server today after first downing my workstation, and didn't load all the stuff that wasn't loaded after I figured out I didn't need that other stuff like nfserver, etc. I thought by doing this the reference to Samba would go away. After the server booted, I then booted my workstation and logged in, everything working perfectly but still has the Samba reference in the list of Network Drives. Could someone help me get rid of that, thanks.

  • Link to Network Drive with Spaces

    I need to create a link in SharePoint 2010 that points to a network drive with spaces in the title. SharePoint substitutes %20 for spaces, but I need the space character.
    For example:
    file:///\\company\foldername   works
    file:///\\company\folder name   does not work, it becomes
    file:///\\company\folder%20name
    Has anyone run into this issue before?

    Hi Andy,
    20% represents space in url encoding and it is hardcoded. I don’t think it is better to remain space character in the link.

  • How do I send Windows-friendly network drive links using Mail (in Tiger)?

    I'm in an office with mostly Windows users (and Windows NT servers). Most folks use Windows email applications such as Outlook and Outlook Express. I use Apple Mail 2.1.3 (753.1) in Tiger v10.4.11. But I want to send links within my emails to files on our various network drives and have the receiving Windows/Outlook users click the links to automatically open the various files, but I can't get this to work. Any ideas on how to format the network links so they work this way?
    I don't log into the network drives normally until I want to access things, perhaps I should. But I've tried this and still no go.

    Thanks, but I've tried this in a variety of ways, none of which seem to work. So there's more detail required. Here's some background and examples of what I've tried without success.
    The Windows WORKGROUP is, say, "JAMESCORP" - but what's the equivalent in Apple networking to a Workgroup? And does this even matter? It seems to not matter?
    The Windows drives are mapped on Windows machines as, say, F: G: H: I: etc... But I don't know what the equivalent concept of mapping drives is on an Apple (more on smb, below). I typically don't map Windows' network drives (I use VMWare Fusion) on the Windows side since I did not like the constant Windows messages reminding me each time I'm out of the office that it can't find the Drive F:. Then it can't find Drive G: - etc. ad infinitum. What a pain.
    On the Apple side, I use Finder's command-K to smb into the server that contains all the partitioned drives. In the smb list, the drive names are, say, mapp-cdrv and mapp-ddrv etc (which, in Windows map to F: and G: respectively).
    So when you type "servername" - I'm lost regarding just what the servername should really be? Is it:
    a) F: (which does not work for a Windows user once it's delivered via Apple Mail to an Microsoft Outlook email) So this seems to not be the proper servername - or if it is, there's a translation happening in the delivery mechanism that makes it not work. (I "Add Hyperlink" from the Edit menu to get the link into an Apple Mail message.)
    b) mapp-cdrv (which works on an Apple, but when sent to a Windows machine's email (e.g., Outlook) does not work - so this isn't it. This servername is not something the Windows machines understand
    c) cifs://workgroup;""me@<ip address of server>/mapp-cdrv (which, again, doesn't work on a Windows machine once sent thru Apple Mail).
    I've tried a variety of other permutations of "servername" - both Windows-like server names and Apple-like server names - but none seem to work once delivered the way I'm delivering the links (thru Apple Mail to Outlook.)
    Any other ideas? Thanks for the help! ; )

  • Opening Documents in Office Desktop client creates sharepoint links in network drive folder

    Hi Guys
    Having an issue where if a document is opened from sharepoint or through the explorer window in Office, a "folder" is created in the network drive folder which has a sharepoint link to the document. I realise this is probably a built in versioning
    feature of SharePoint but it's becoming a bit of a pain with the sheer volume of links being created. Any ideas how to turn off this feature or bug?
    Thanks//

    Hi,
    Could you capture the screenshot of the "folder"? Please specify the "folder" path in the screenshot.
    In my environment, whether I open the document from site UI or open library with Windows Explorer, then open document, there is no folder created.
    Please test the issue on another PC and check if it is related to client machine.

  • Java Home symbolic links broken

    I followed a tutorial to install Tomcat on Mac OS X. When running, I got an error saying /Library/Java/Home/bin/java: No such file or directory. After going to /Library/Java, I saw that Home was a broken symbolic link to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Home. So, going to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework I saw that the Home file there was a broken symbolic link to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/CurrentJDK/Home. As you could guess, CurrentJDK was a broken symbolic link to /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents, and /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/ doesn't even exist. Where should I set all of these to?

    Have you installed Java yet on Lion?

  • Can remove broken symbolic link  ../../../sparv9/disk_ata

    we found a broken symbolic link /platform/sun4u/kernel/drv/sparv9/disk_ata
    this is on a V440, Solaris 9
    would like to ask, any issue if we remove this link, think it should not be a problem, but this is a live server.
    Thanks!

    This is also surprising the fact that your server is a SunFire V440 means
    it should only be using SCSI harddisks. This is really weird.
    Anyway, since it is a broken link, you could actually delete for security reasons.
    But since you are worried ( I don't blame you, coz I will feel the same way),
    the best way is to keep a record of this broken link in a file where you could
    access it in the future. So my final advise is, record the broken link (comlete path ) into a file
    ( you can do a cut and paste ) then secure the file ( chmod 400 filename)
    and then delete your broken link. Do you agree ?
