Lost email mailboxes on iPhone

My iPone 5c suddenly stopped connecting to my email server, and all of my messages in my inbox disappeared as well as the sent items mail box.  Reloading the email account settings fixed the connection problem, but the messages are still missing.  Any tricks for recovering them or are they gone forever?

You might have to check on the webmail version of your email account to see if they've in an 'all mail' folder or another folder.

  • HT4623 Lost email capability on iPhone

I updated my 4S phone to IOS6 last night.  Now I cannot send/receive emails.  The message box says "IMAP.GMAIL.COM is not available, please check your mail settings".  What does this mean??  My email address and password ARE correct.

I have done this twice already. Still it doesn't work. When I open mail, it's just blank, it doesn't even say Imap is not available. I get notifications though when I have new mail. As soon as i got the mail, I can open and read it but once I exited the mailbox and tried to go back in, it's just a blank page.

Open the mail app then press and hold the sleep/wake button until the red slide to power off thing appears. Without sliding the bar, press and hold the home button until the app quits.
Also clear the mail app from multitasking bar too. Then open mail app and check again

  • How to restore lost emails from iCloud on iPhone 5

how do you restore lost emails  icloud iphone 5

Emails from iCloud cannot be lost.
Emails from other accounts are not backed up via iCloud, only the settings for those accounts.

If I'm typing an email on an iphone 5 and get a call (and answer the call), where is the email stored... or have I lost it? Thanks!

Arrgggh! I figured it was gone, but I hoped there might be some gizmo magic. That really is a flaw you'd think the phone would be better at "multi-tasking" since I'm suing it for both calls and email. Thanks again!

  • HT1668 How do I create a new folder on my iPad & iPhone email mailboxes, when my provider is RCN?  All I have is Inbox, VIP, Sent, and Trash.

How do I create a new folder on my iPad & iPhone email mailboxes, using RCN as my Internet provider?

Actually, you can create additional mailboxes directly on the iPad. I have done it in 3 differemt IMAP accounts. But you do have to have IMAP email. However as stated above, this is not a function of the mail app.
If you had an IMAP email account, any additional mailboxes that you already had set up would have synced to the iPad and you would see them in your email account in the Mail app.
if you want to see for yourself..... If you go to your email account in the Mail app and look at the window where your inbox, trash folder and sent folder are - if there is an Edit button at the top of the window - tap that and then tap Add Mailbox at the bottom.
If the Edit button is not there - you cannot create folders on the iPad. Your email account is not IMAP.

  • Lost emails .not in any mailboxes?

Hi I have not long had I pad but seem to have lost emails. They do not appear in any mailboxes

Is it all or just some?
Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. When the screen goes blank power On again in the normal way.] It is absolutely/appsolutely safe!

  • Emails sent on iPhone do not show up on my Mac

I have a few email accounts.  For my Gmail account if I send an email on my iPhone, it does not show up on in sent mail on my Mac (or anywhere else for that matter).  I am using Apple's Mail application and the emails I am sending from iPhone are also being sent from the mail application as opposed to using the Gmail HTML interface.  Gmails sent from my iPhone do show up in sent mail when I open Gmail in a web page.  Also, emails sent from my Gmail account on my Mac do show up in sent mail on my iPhone.
I only have this problem with Gmail (my primary email account).  My other emails sync up fine between me iPhone and Mac.
    Other info:
    Outgoing mail server:  smtp.gmail.com
Mailbox behaviors:  "Drafts Mailbox" and "Trash Mailbox" are listed under Mailbox Behaivors, but there is no "Sent Mailbox" like I have with my other accounts.  I have a feeling that this is the root of my problem since I have no way of electing to have my Sent mail stored "On the Server".
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Joelrsny had the much easier fix:
For Sent folder not showing on the iPhone.
ALL of these ways work to add a Gmail account to the iPhone. Its not how you add it, its the settings in Gmail causing these folders not to appear.
Do not add the account to the iPhone first. Go to Gmail.com in a browser, log in to your email account and hit settings at the top right.... Select the Labels Tab at the top. On the right, you will see check boxes. Check all the folders you want to appear in imap accounts. Once you check them, go and add the account by just picking add Gmail account on your iphone settings for mail. ALL the folders you checked will appear...
    Done!

  • I've lost an important email correspondence from 2012. I've heard this could be due to getting new Mac with Mavericks. can any one tell me (how to find out) if this is related? Also, how to retrieve the lost emails in my Gmail? Thanks

    Hello!
I've just been told that "a lot of people have reported the total loss of their e-mail related to the Mavericks (10.9) update.  It appears the update corrupts the email files on your computer and when the Apple e-mail client sees everything is "gone" it wipes the server too (your GMail account)."
I need to recover/retrieve a lost email sent from my GMail account back in sep/oct 2012. can any one help?
I have searched my account the relevant correspondence is gone. I should not have deleted it myself. I've only started using "Mail" for my GMail account last September, so the servers could not have mixed up the Gmail archives, I think. Either way, I'm not smart enough yet to know how to retrieve this correspondence. The lost email is rather important, why I need to investigate all possible solutions.
My gmail settings i.e. POP/IMAP and Filters are as they should, as far as I believe, but yet, I cannot tell how my settings were in 2012, tho I think I've never changed anything personally. In Sep 2012, arounf the time the, now lost, corresponcence took place, I switched to using Chrome, where before I was using Safari or Firefox. I now use a new mac book with Mavericks and browse in Chrome, most of the time.
Would anyone be able to guide me through some steps, or have any leads on this?
    Many thanks in advance!
    LK

Unless you've done anything to change it, Google keeps every email that ever passes through their server in your All Mail folder/mailbox/label. Even if you delete stuff, they hold onto it, there. You have to go out of your way to actually delete anything permanently.

How do I not sync notes with my email? I have a business email on my iphone as well as my husbands iphone. We have never adjusted any settings or hooked it up to itunes, I only added the shared email account to his phone. Help???

    Hi StoneLeadyFarms,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like notes on your devices may have synced when the email account was added, as described here:
    iOS: Syncing Notes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4191
Notes are associated with an IMAP email account or iCloud account. To sync Notes, enable Notes for each account in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars or Settings > iCloud.
You can stop syncing notes by tapping Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars or Settings > iCloud, tapping the email address that you added, and switching Notes to the off position.
Additionally, if your husband has backed up his iPhone to iTunes or iCloud, the steps in this article can help with recovering the lost notes from his device:

That changes things a little bit , login to icloud.com and see if you can find it in your sent folder.
If it is there you did send, just need to wait until you phone syncs "sent folder" perhaps on wifi.
If it is not, then I would say it is lost and you may have to send again. They have 20 megs limit, so make sure that message plus attachment is under that limit.

  • How do I restrict the number of emails that my iphone downloads on ios7

On ios6 I had my mail set up to only download 25 messages per box to my iphone.  I have updated to ios7 today and this option has disappeared from the settings menu and now my phone has downloaded more then the 25 that I want it to.
How can I specify that I just want the 25??
    Thanks.

    No there isn't.
Have the emails been read via webmail access using a browser on your computer or with an email client on your computer if both email accounts are being accessed with an email client on your computer?
With that many unread emails on the iPhone, that sounds like one or both email accounts were created as a POP account. When creating an existing email account as a POP account with an email client on a computer or on a device such as the iPhone, all existing received emails at the incoming mail server that remain on the server are downloaded as new and unread emails.
If the accounts were created as an IMAP account and all emails have been read elsewhere, they would not be available on the iPhone as unread emails since all server stored mailboxes with an IMAP account are kept synchronized with the server.

  • Best practices for  Email on the iPhone

As a new iPhone user, before I do something disastrous (I once wiped out an email account completely when trying to use IMAP after delete stuff in one place and having the effect synched everywhere), I am wonder how best to use email on my iPhone.
I use Mail.app on my Mac. If I want to check for new email, and possibly respond, but not affect my usual Mac email downloads later on, is there a best way to set things up so I retrieve my email but leave it on the server for later download when I'm at my Mac? I am hesitant about switching everything to IMAP.
Or... is there a better way? How do most people set it up?
    Thank,
    doug

    Thanks for your response Allan.
One followup point regarding this. I didn't set up my Gmail account via the iPhones Mail client. It was set up automatically for me when I did my first synch and I said it was ok to synch email accounts.
However, my Gmail account on my Mac inside Mail.app is NOT set for IMAP - it is POP3.
So it appears that the iPhone not only sets your Gmail account as IMAP when setting up in the client by choosing the Gmail option, but that it also OVERRIDES the settings when synching the account information from your Mac, turning a POP3 account into an IMAP account.
I guess the only way of turning it back to POP3 would be to delete that account on the iPhone and create another one via the "Other" account setting.
But it seems to be working well as is.
I think it is safer to have one "master" account (like on my main computer) that is POP3 and doesn't synch with all the other accounts. I had a disastrous experience once with IMAP and lost all of an account's email because of the synching. Since then I prefer to use POP3 on my main account and keep all my email offline - and also constantly backed up with Time Machine.
I also have my main mail set to "archive when downloaded" from Gmail, so there is yet another backup that way.
    Thanks,
    doug

had to shut down due to time constrictions, sorry for pushing the need for help, but I was desperate to recover vital lost messages. I tried everything suggested in the Mail help records and past discussion posts. At this point (next morning) my mail is still lost.
    any suggestions will be appreciated.

    HELP! URGENT! lost email messages!
    Posted: Jan 21, 2007 6:29 PM
I started, two days ago, receiving four of each message coming to me. I just looked at my accounts and saw two of my primary account (POP.ipa.net is the Incoming mail server), I'd never seen the second one before, so I deleted it.
Went to my (Mac Mail ver. 2.1) mail browser and all my inbox and sent and junk messages now show the same message: "The message from [email protected] concerning “Receipt for Your Payment to (account name)” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
    WHAT!!!!!!??????
I went to Apple discussions and found a problem similar from today and followed the advice there by David Gimeno:
"In the Finder, go to the ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/ account folder, and look at the contents of INBOX.mbox and Sent Messages.mbox."
did this and found nothing under either .mbox folder ...
HELP!!! IMPORTANT MESSAGES ARE IN THE BALANCE!

If you deleted a POP account, then all your mail stored in that account’s mailboxes has been wiped out, not just moved somewhere, and you were warned that this would happen by the following alert:
    Remove Account
Are you sure you want to remove the <AccountType> account "<AccountName>"?
This will permanently delete the account setup information, mailboxes, and messages from your computer. Messages stored on the mail server will not be affected.
To prevent that from happening, you should have moved your mail to custom “On My Mac” mailboxes instead of leaving it in the account’s mailboxes.
If the messages are not on the server, and you don’t have a backup, your only option in the case of Mail 2.x is to try to salvage as many deleted *.emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, or FileSalvage (the files to be recovered would be different in the case of Mail 1.x). Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten. Actually, your anxiety may very well have already caused some of those messages to be irretrievably lost.
As to why you appear to have lost messages from the account that remains in Mail as well, note that for each account, Mail creates a folder within ~/Library/Mail/ whose name starts with the account type (POP, IMAP, Mac), followed by the account username and the incoming mail server. Deleting a mail account causes the corresponding account folder to be deleted as well.
You should never, ever, set up two accounts in Mail with the same Account Type, User Name, and Incoming Mail Server. Two such accounts would share the same account folder in the filesystem, and deleting one of them would cause the (shared) account folder to be deleted as well...

  • Lost emails upgrading from tiger to leopard

I lost emails (although mailbox folders are still there, just empty) after upgrading from tiger to leopard. Please help?!

I followed these instructions the last couple of times this happened to me. It works so well that I've made a text file with these instructions:
I got it to work by deleting all the values in the defaults database associated with Mail and the Junk rules. In my case I did the following:
Remove the Envelope Index file (~/Library/Mail/Envelope Index) from your user account.
    Launch Terminal.
Copy/Paste this list into the Terminal window.
    defaults remove com.apple.mail JunkMailBehaviorHasBeenConfigured
    defaults remove com.apple.mail JunkMailHeaderFlags
    defaults remove com.apple.mail JunkMailInfoPanelHasBeenShown
    defaults remove com.apple.mail JunkViewerAttributes
    defaults remove com.apple.mail LastTimeJunkWasVisited
    defaults remove com.apple.mail NumberOfMessagesMarkedAsJunk
    defaults remove com.apple.mail NumberOfMessagesMarkedAsNotJunk
    defaults remove com.apple.mail UseJunkMailHeaderFlags
Watch the rapid execution of the text commands in the Terminal window.
    Quit Terminal.
    Launch Mail.
Follow the onscreen guides to import your mail and watch the mail database restore itself.
All mailboxes, drafts, etc., should be quickly restored. Mail launches and quits correctly.
You will need to start updating the Junk filter in Leopard from scratch as new junk mail shows up.
