Lost expose in 10.6?

hi, i have a mac mini that is currently updated to 10.6.8 and have lost the ability to expose windows. when hitting that hot corner, the screen dims but no smaller thumbnails of my screens appear. I know that in later OS versions expose has been changed/removed, but it seems like it should work differently/better in 10.6.8. i searched and only seem to locate folks complaining about 10.7 and up.
any advice?

Try a smc reset:

  • Expose not working in Snow Leopard

    I can't get Expose to work from my keyboard or my mouse, except by one method - bringing the cursor to one corner of the screen. Going through preferences for Expose has not helped, nor have the preferences and settings for my keyboard or mouse (both are Logitech products). It used to work fine, so this seems to be a problem with Snow Leopard. Any advice?

    I also use a Logitech keyboard and mouse (diNovo Edge and MX Revolution) -- both lost Expose functionality with the upgrade to 10.6.1 as you've described. I'm told (in a call to Apple Support) that this is due to changes in Expose/Spaces in the new OS, which are system wide; meaning that they work differently now, and the interface doesn't do what it used to do in Leopard.
    However, the good news is (in another call, this time to Logitech), that an update to the software should be available in about two weeks. So, go to *Applications >> Utilities >> Logitech Update* and keep checking for the update from them.
    Logitech told me that they weren't sure if the update would be automatically pushed, so you may have to keep checking manually.

  • OSX 10.8 and Dragon Dictate

    From JohnG49 (Sydney Australia)
    I have upgraded to OSX 10.8 so that I could use Dragon Dictate 3 ($200.00 Australian) which is not supported on Snow Leopard.  BUT have discovered Mountain Lion has lost expose and spaces which I use(d) all the time for report writing.
    Does anyone have a work around to get expose and spaces onto Mountain Lion, so far it looks like Snow Leopard was the better OS for work.
    Regards
    JohnG49

    A lot of people complain about the same feature. You can't recover Spaces and Exposé as they were in Snow Leopard because Mission Control has replaced them > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4689?viewlocale=en_US
    However, you can modify some settings to make Mission Control more similar to Exposé (unfortunately, you can't modify Spaces). For example, if you want that windows show in Mission Control in the same way as they did in Snow Leopard, open System Preferences > Mission Control, and untick "Group windows by application"

  • Lost Preferences, Dock, Desktop, Expose, Dashboard, Minimize

    So I updated iTunes and Quicktime on my PowerBook G4 1.25 last night, followed by the mandatory restart. Then I put my new printer software on and played around with Adobe CS2 and printed some things off. When I got tired I shut down and crashed on the couch. I awoke with a cold. Seems my Mac had a crash of its own and awoke with a cold too.
    It worked fine for a while, until I began working in Dreamweaver...it just froze. When I finally forced a shutdown (after a half hour) I restarted to find that my dock missing, my desktop image gone, Expose inactive, inability to minimize and no Dashboard.
    I don't know what to do. Please help.

    I just started having this same problem after Firefox crashed the Finder somehow. I've tried repairing the disk, repairing permissions, trashing com.apple.finder.plist and systempreferences.plist, and nothing's working. It happens in all the users on this computer. I tried reinstalling the 10.4.9 update and the latest security update, because I think this happened because I hadn't yet restarted from installing the security update when Firefox crashes. However, the 10.4.9 update didn't help, and it won't actually let me reinstall the security update.
    Were you able to fix this, or does anyone else have any suggestions? Bit of a crisis here...

  • Problem with Expose and Adobe AIR application -can't click on app in Expose

    I just installed a new Adobe AIR application called TwitterLocal. The app was working fine until I accidently hit some keyboard shortcut and the application window disappeared. I figured I accidently assigned the window to some other "space," however I do not have SPACES turned on. Furthermore, when I select EXPOSE, I can now see the content of the application's window, however if I click on the app (which takes on that grey-highlight appearance when you mouse over it) the desktop returns to its normal position. I can see via the top status bar that the app is currently selected, but I cannot access the app window.
    Is there any way to send an app that was "sent" to expose back to the normal desktop? I've tried rebooting and even uninstalling/reinstalling the app but it is still lost in expose.
    Any thoughts on this would greatly be appreciated.

    Solution was to change display to lower resolution, then the Adobe AIR app TwitterLocal became visible on the standard desktop and I was able to click on and move the app window towards the left of the desktop. Once I switched the resolution back, everything was ok.

  • Lost ability to open background windows by sliding cursor to upper right ha

    nd corner and also lost the ability to get to the desktop by dragging cursor to lower left hand corner.
    It just happened out of nowhere. I love that feature> Can anyone tell me how to turn it back on please?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Lyssa,
    For some reason everything came back to normal when I logged on today.
    I tried the Expose Spaces thing yesterday and all seemed to be set but it still was not working. Oh well. Its working now.
    Thanks again.

  • Iphoto 08 lost archives of one photo

    Every time I open iPhoto this happens. I think lost archives of one photo and now I get a message coming up on the screen saying 'iPhoto library found a photo that was not imported' 'Would you like to import it?' Whether I say yes or no another message comes up 'the photoes are in the pictures/iphoto Library Recovered photos_' then it is filed as folders in iphotos. When I open them in Finder 'show info', they are locked. It is really annoying.

    Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
    Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
    Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
    If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.

  • Lost, or inaccessible, iphoto library

    I've seen many posts about lost iphoto libraries, without understanding if their problems/solutions are related to my own. Basic info: Using iPhoto '09 v8.1.1 (419), had ~200 photos in the iphoto library, then loaded 7 photos into an album called "EBay Photos", created for that task. Since then, that album, with its 7 photos, is all that can be seen. I can see, in users/new user/pictures/iphoto library that it occupies 13.1 MB, and that the 'kind' is iphoto library. If I double click on that entry, I get the info about the iphoto version, mentioned above. If control click on the iphoto icon I get a window asking "What photo library do you want to use?", with the only choice being iPhoto Library (default).
    The size listed above, 13.1 MB, seems big for only 7 photos, but maybe about right for ~200. So, I think maybe the 'real' library is out there, but just inaccessible. Any suggestions?

    You can't rid yourself of the Ebay album until you can access the iPhoto Window, I'm afraid. Let the Library Manager do its thing.
    I feel that the writers of iPhone, who are protecting us from harming our photo collections by preventing deletions, are protecting us to death!
    Well, assuming you mean iPhoto, if that's what they were doing, then probably. However, folks damaging their library by mucking around with it was a cost to Apple, because many times some one did it, it wold result in a call to Support. And Support is a cost not a profit centre in any organisation. So, they ain't protecting you from you, they're protecting the bottom line from you.
    Not that it's a great protection: Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
    Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
    Now even that access won't solve the Ebay Album issue, as you will see there is no folder for that Album. Albums are entries in the database, and that's why you'll need to get to the iPhoto Window to rid yourself of it.

  • Customer Service - A Lost Art for Managers?

    I just got off the phone with another customer service rep. I feel sorry for them. They are the foot soldiers who are charged with appeasing the customers' complains and they are supposed to represent the company's interest as well.  I have yet to talk to a customer service rep who was rude or unprofessional. They have always been courteous, polite, and empathize with you to a point that as a customer, I have to be conscientious and not get personal.
    The managers however, they seem to have lost the very meaning of Customer Service. Once they got promoted, the seem to forget the very trait that got them to the level where they are now.
    And why should they? They are no longer in the front lines. They no longer have to put up with the incensed, irate, often-times belligerent customers on the other line. They don't need to put in the extra effort to appease the customer. No more sense of urgency -  or common sense for that matter.
    I called Customer Service yesterday to complain about the exorbitant bill I received as a text message from Verizon.
    First a little background:
    I have been a longtime customer (more than a decade) of Verizon taking advantage of my company's preferred customer status. This means that my company promotes Verizon wireless as the provider of choice for our cell phones in exchange for a 19% Employee discount on my Monthly Access Plan. I started with their 450 minute Nationwide Individual Plan with no frills. I just wanted a basic phone and that's it. No Texting and no Data plans were available then.
    About a week before Christmas 2011, I went into a brick-and-mortar VerizonWireless store because I was due for a new phone-every-2-years and wanted to also get my oldest daughter a cell phone for Christmas as her mom and I feel that she is ready for one. This would be her Christmas gift.
    I transferred my Individual Plan to a Family plan to save money. I know my daughter will be texting more so I wanted the unlimited texting plan that the Family Plan provided.
    I was told by the clerk that I can order the phones online and will be consolidated on the family plan once the lines are activated.
    I was surprised that that didn't happen. My bill came to $400+ because my daughters phone was in a plan all by herself! This is contrary to what they said!
    This is why I think managers lost sight of their customers.
    I have complained on this matter since yesterday and is now going on day-2.
    Still unresolved. Still a frustrated customer.
    They should have taken care of this the first time. Stop the buck at the first sign of escalation. Take responsibility as if you own the company. You wouldn't want to loose a customer to a competitor because you failed to take responsibility when you had the chance. Treat the customers right.
    Thanks,
    G

    I agree pastorcharlie, I just got off the phone with them just now and the customer service guy kept insisting that I (the customer) made the mistake, eventhough I was following their instructions to set up my daughter's phone. It seems like their motto is not "The customer is always right", it's more like "The customer is most likely wrong and it's your job in customer service to prove him/her wrong".
    The arrogance of this company is just unbelievable!
    The longer this problem stays unresolved the more irritated I become and I know that I will do whatever I can to get out of this contract as soon as I can. I will scout around for other providers and see if perhaps they might be interested in helping me break my contract with verizon in exchange for my loyalty. Heck, if the other provider will even pay for the early termination fee and make a Super Bowl commercial to show how verizon treated this customer, it would be worth it. What competitor would not want to expose verizon's arrogance!
    Of course, writing blogs like this might even go viral on the Internet.

  • Reconnecting to channel set after lost connection

    Hi there,
    I am beginner to flex and I have a problem with to login after the connection to the BlaseDS has been lost.
    Setup:
    The flex client calls a HelloWorld Java service exposed using spring-flex.  This service is called when the user hit the Hello World button on the UI.  The channel set on which this service is exposed is secured and for now we will resort to programmatic authentication.  (The user does is not required to input his username and password, just to simplify it a bit).
    As a client framework Cairngrom is used and an appriopriate delegate is setup to handle the remote object call.
    Here is a snippet from the HelloWorld delegate class called after the user hits the Hello World button.
              public function getHelloWorldMessage():void{
                if(!__service.channelSet.authenticated){
                    var token:AsyncToken = __service.channelSet.login("username", "password");
                    token.addResponder(new AsyncResponder(
                        function(event:ResultEvent, token:Object = null):void {
                            Alert.show("You are logged in", "Login");
                            // Send the amf request to the backend.
                            var token2:AsyncToken = __service.getHelloWorld();
                            // Add the responder.
                            token2.addResponder(__responder);
                        function(event:FaultEvent, token:Object = null):void {
                            Alert.show("You are NOT logged in", "Login");
                }else{
                    // Send the http request.
                    var token2:AsyncToken = __service.getHelloWorld();
                    // Add the responder.
                    token2.addResponder(__responder);
    The __service is the Hello World service has been defined as follows.
    <mx:RemoteObject id="helloWorldServiceRemoteObject" destination="helloWorldService" channelSet="{helloWorldChannels}"/>
    <mx:ChannelSet id="helloWorldChannels" >
            <mx:AMFChannel uri="http://localhost:8080/helloworldservice-war-1.0.0.SNAPSHOT/messagebroker/amf/" />
    </mx:ChannelSet>
    What happens:
    User clicks on the Helloworld, the program hits the getHelloWorldMessage and the ChannelSet.login("username", "password") is called.   The channelset authentication flag is set to true, and the _authAgent present in the ChannelSet class which was previously null is set
    The success handler is called and the secured spring function returns the "Hello World" message.
    I restart the BlaseDS server to simulate an intermittent connection.
    Now the user clicks on Hello World button again and recieves an error since the authentication flag is still set to true there is no attempt to login again.
    The following FaultEvent is caught
    faultCode=Client.Authentication
    faultString=An Authentication object was not found in the SecurityContext
    The user reclicks the Hello World button this time however the ChannelSet.authenticated  is set to false and the client code attempts to reconnect however fails.  The snippet below is an extract from the ChannelSet.as, when the user reclicks, the second condition is met and the  IllegalOperationException with error message "ChannelSet is in the process of logging in or logging out."  is thrown.  The condition is met since the _authAgent is not null.
    public function login(username:String, password:String, charset:String=null):AsyncToken
            if (authenticated)
                throw new IllegalOperationError("ChannelSet is already authenticated.");
            if ((_authAgent != null) && (_authAgent.state != AuthenticationAgent.LOGGED_OUT_STATE))
                throw new IllegalOperationError("ChannelSet is in the process of logging in or logging out.");
            if (charset != Base64Encoder.CHARSET_UTF_8);
                charset = null; // Use legacy charset, ISO-Latin-1.
    Does someone have any ideas as to how to resolve this?

    Hi. That sounds like a bug to me. What version/build of BlazeDS are you using? I'd try this out with the latest (nightly) BlazeDS 3.x or BlazeDS trunk build and see if it's still an issue. If it's still an issue you can log a bug at http://bugs.adobe.com/blazeds. I'd think that after getting the authentication error the state of _authAgent would be set to the logged out state but that doesn't seem to be the case.
    You may be able to manually reset it for the time being. Maybe try calling ChannelSet.logout() in your fault handler and see if that does it.

  • Right click in Screen Sharing causes Expose on remote machine

    I have a Mac Pro at home. I have a hot corner for Exposé. I have a mighty mouse at both the host and client machine. In both cases, Exposé from a mouse pinch is disabled.
    When I try and drag a file from one place to another on the remote machine, Exposé is triggered. I also use RemoteTap on my iPhone - when I connect using it, it forces a "spaces exposé" (shows all the spaces on the remote machine) and quits the Dock. I imagine these two may be related. Has anyone else seen this and know what may be causing it?
    I should add that the desktop machine was a migration from my laptop. I have looked everywhere I can think of, but on the remote machine, when I am in front of it, Exposé is not just triggered without a real trigger. With the remote sessions, I have a hard time using the machine without exposé triggering.
    Thanks in advance for help...

    I have the same problem with the dragging a file activating expose. SO ANNOYING!!!! It makes screen sharing (one of the main reasons I pay for MobileMe) absolutely useless. It can be solved, however, by disabling all hot corners. While that's a semi easy workaround, its incredibly annoying to have to do that each time I want to remotely log in. I really hope they fix it soon or they lost a MobileMe customer. I will just use a free VNC program at that point.

  • Expose Bug: Consistently and spontaneously dropping keyboard/mouse mappings

    Has anyone else experienced an issue with Expose in Leopard wherein the keyboard and mouse mappings defined in System Preferences get dropped without warning or provocation? Since upgrading to Leopard, I keep having to manually re-enable my mouse/keyboard hotkeys for both Expose and Dashboard. It'll work for awhile, then one day I press the side-buttons on my mouse, say, to expose all windows on the desktop and nothing happens. I go into System Preferences and all my Expose/Dashboard preferences have been lost, I reset them and the cycle begins anew. Rather, rinse, repeat.

    Hi I was having the same problem. Looks like it was Steermouse. After I uninstalled it everything went to normal.
    Although I had to turn on the Expose shortcut keys in the System Preferences.

  • Over exposed interview

    Hi guys, just looking for some creative ideas to salvage some over exposed interview footage I shot on my DVX recently. I used three point lighting but due to a power failure and a reset, the lighting dimmers got unbalanced and my AutoIris came on, and tried to over compensate the frame. (And that's when I lost the zebras) All my other stuff on Manual Iris is perfect except for one ten minute two-shot interview which is over exposed on the hair/back light and faces (I was using a Rifa light for fill). I wonder if there's any creative ideas if I can salvage it? It's not real bad on a computer monitor, but bothers me when it goes out to video and seen on a TV monitor from DVD. Any ideas or tricks (on a Mac, FCP) or filters in FCP that would give me control in the timeline? Your creative ideas are appreciated...I know, I know. Always check the AutoIris is off.

    Yea, coming to think of it. They must have shot with badly over exposed footage too.
    Was trying to hit it without power windows in FCP with mainly the built in FCP 3 way and the blowout fixer plug-in. Not really awesome, as you can see the colors are starting to neon out, and I didn't really manage to hit the hues cleanly (it's a little magenta, and there's no good white balance spot in there), there's still no detail in a few patches, and the lips are discoloured. Also there's too much cross talk in the highlights control of the FCP 3-way, as a result the speculars on the lady's hair light have been dropped too low while trying to compensate for the blowout on the guy's face.
    Color will probably provide some additional precision.

  • Lost grain?

    I'm working on a short film in FCP7 and added a bit of grain to my shots to make them feel less like video. I'm using the Nattress Film Effects plugin. The grain looks great in FCP, as does the movie I export from the sequence. However something seems to happen in either Compressor or DVD Studio Pro that causes the grain to disappear. When I play back my burned DVD it looks like smooth video again -- no noticeable grain. My only thought is that I'm burning a standard def disc and the grain is so fine that such details/subtlties are simply lost, but I'm not sure if that is the case.
    Has anyone had a similar experience or have any ideas what might be happening? Thanks in advance for any thoughts/suggestions.

    Not to solve the lost grain question, but more to the "I don't want it to look like video" point, I find two things useful.
    - Address the Gamma. You need something like Nattress's Film look tools or use Color to stretch the color and luma distribution into a film S curve. Dealing with this goes a long way to changing the "video" look.
    - The other thing that sets video apart from "film" is the frame rate. Video usually looks much smoother due to the higher 60 fields per second or 30 progressive frames per second recording rate. The 24p fps frame rate of film has an immediate visual impact. If you go that direction, use Compressor and set the retiming setting in Frame Tools to Better (not best) as a start. Best does yield slightly better images. However, they may not be noticably improved and they come at a really significant computational time increase.
    Of course, well lit, well recorded material can be pushed and pulled much more effectively. It's really hard to do much with murky or over exposed material.
    Have fun.
