Lost history

Hi, I'm using Ffox 14.0.1 on a Dell optiplex (GX 620) . Yesterday I had to reboot, and when I re-opened the browser, all my history was gone.
I checked the settings, but everything is untouched, and since the reboot, I'm not losing any more info.
Lost about 6 months history, so I'm pretty unhappy about it. I guess there's not too many ways to restore it, but any ideas why it happened so it won't happen again? Thx.

Is is usually best not to rely on the history as that can be volatile and get lost as you've experienced, but bookmark pages by clicking the star on the location bar or use Bookmark All Tabs in the tab bar context menu.<br />
Unfortunately there is no way to get back deleted or lost history.
There may be some data left in the cache (about:cache) that allows to reconstruct some of them.

  • Iphone calendar lost history entries.  How do you get your past history back?

I have recently looked to see history in my calendar on my Iphone4 and Ipodtouch and my entries for up to 2 years ago are no longer there.  Does anyone know how to retrieve these entries?  How long the phones keep the history?....or if you can set the calendar to always keep entries?
Thanks for any help that can be offered.

On my Iphone4 when I got to "Settings" - 'Mail,Contacts,Calendars' - I scroll to 'Calendars'.  The only options under Calendars is - new invitation alerts - time zone support - default alerts - default calendar -  There is no 'Sync' option.
Unfortunately, I believe that all of my entries were removed when I installed Icloud, which I no longer use.  Perhaps I need  to turn icloud back on and reset it to all events and then turn I clouds off again?

  • Lost history after updating to FF4.0

From FF3.6, I downloaded and installed FF4.0. I had a huge history saved in 3.6 and expected it to be there with the upgrade - it wasn't. In the "show All History", only "Today" shows.
I'd heard of a file called "places.sqlite" is where history is saved, and I found 3 such files. One is over 10Mb, so that's probably where my old history is, but I have no way to load that one.
    Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

    I've disabled add-ons. I started in safe-mode. I cannot get the menu-bar up.
I've used FF for years. but its becoming more like IE all the time and I hate this FF4, I can't get any tool-bars up at all.
If i click on the menu bar ..it just removes it but never opens it, if that makes sense.

  • Migrated from FF 3.6 to 7.0 on OS X, lost History during migration

I recently did an update on a Mac Laptop, running Lion (10.7). The version of Firefox on it was 3.6 at the time, I installed 7.0 in its place. Two things happened:
    1) The user had been saving all of her tabs upon quitting FF, using the dialogue box each time on close. When I upgraded her to FF7, it remembered all her tabs, then promptly forgot them when it next closed - the default action upon launching the App was to go to the FF home page, and not her tabs from the previous session. It never prompted me to remember / save them. Is there any way to recover this?
    2) Her history is completely gone. I understand this was likely a result of the history file from 3.6 not being compatible with 7.0. Her bookmarks are fine, but the history is not... is there a way to recover this as well?
    Thank you!

I should note I was smart enough to back up her laptop to an external drive, so I have a complete, accessible image of her old profile available, if the settings can be imported.

  • How do I get lost History, Bookmarks, etc after updating?

Firefox just updated and I accidentally clicked "No" when it asked me to import History, Bookmarks, etc. How do I get it back?

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.
These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

  • Lost History on Sync'd computer

v4 is making me crazy. Today I went to my laptop and found my history gone and the browser sync'd with my desktop. Like my desktop wiped out my laptop tabs as well as the history

What photos?  Those that you synced from the computer to the ipod?  Just sync them back.
Pics taken withe ipod?  You should import them to your computer regularly. You may be able to restore from backup and get them back.  Otherwise they are gone.

  • Following download of version 23.0.1 I lost all previous history but not bookmarks. How do I recover old history? Recovery in "import and backup" does not help

My remembered and retained history was going back quite a few months. Following update of Firefox to 23.0.1 I lost all my history and Firefox only retains websites visited after the new version was installed. My bookmarks have been retained. I tried Recover in "Import and backup" but it only goes back to the date of the new installation. I tried places.sqlite in "Roaming" but there is only one with today's date. Is there a way to recover the lost history? Why did Firefox lose it? Will it happen averytime Firefox updates?

Backup your bookmarks manually. If you have been using the "import" you may have already lost some information by overwriting it. As a matter of course you should always save current bookmarks manually before using any restores.
    * [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]
That way you can ensure you are able to restore the complete current set. Put your .json backup file somewhere safe outside Firefox program or profile paths. The Windows Desktop or removable media would be suitable.
Firefox does create some autobackups of bookmarks but does not do anything about backing up the History. Luckily Windows probably backs up previous versions of your file ''places.sqlite'' and that is the database with History and bookmarks in it. See if you can recover a recent version of that, it will restore your history up to the date of the restored file.
    * http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Previous-versions-of-files-frequently-asked-questions
    * the file ''places.sulite'' is in the Firefox profile, a hidden folder that is easy to find by using troubleshooting. see [[Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data#w_how-do-i-find-my-profile]]_how-do-i-find-my-profile
Afterwards import your more recent bookmarks from wherever they were saved. The import overwrites the slightly older bookmarks from the Windows file.
You my also then wish to install and run the addon places maintenance.
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
That may be used to check and repair the places.sqlite database. It will give a short status report. Note if the places.sqlite runs out of space it starts deleting History.
In future you my wish to routinely create occasional backups of your profile or at least your places.sqlite

  • I have deleted the download log (history file) by mistake. Are there any method torestore the lost log file?

I have deleted the history file, a log in the Download Manager window by mistake, hitting the delete button which was hiding from other windows. I want to restore the download history file, if possible. Are there any way to recover the lost history log? Please help me to resolve this problem. Thank you.

    You should be able to:
    Backup the device
Transfer any purchases from the device that were not already downloaded into your new library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

  • Where/How is Browser History Stored for Safari 8?

Anyone know?  I ask because, long story short, Safari was non-functional when I upgraded to Yosemite.  I ended up having to nuke several app files in order to get it working.  Among the casualties was my browser history.  In the previous versions of Safari, there was a preference file ("History.plist") that was created which resided in the "Safari" folder in the user Library.  This contained browser history.  From what I've researched, restoring this file from a back-up is how one, previously, recovered lost history.  Evidently, the new version of Safari no longer creates this ".plist" file.  If it does, it's not in the same location.  Copying my existing ".plist" file to the "Safari" folder does nothing.  This suggests that Apple has changed the way this information is stored.  Is there any, possible, way of restoring my history to the new Safari or am I out of luck?

Looks like I may have figured this out, though not to my desired satisfaction.
So here's what my Safari folder from the user Library looked like prior to the Yosemite upgrade:
    And after the upgrade:
Note the differences.  The old folder has a preference file, "History.plist", that stores browser history.  The new folder has three files ("History.db"; "History.db-wal"; "HistoryIndex.sk") that I, presumed, stored the history data in some way.  What I did was remove all three of the new files from the Safari folder and copied the ".plist" file from the old folder to the new folder.  I launched Safari and, voila, my "old" history was back.  Unfortunately, it was completely unusable.  Trying to view, search, or do just about anything with the browser history would cause Safari to go unresponsive and require a force quit of the app.  Relaunch, rinse, repeat.  No go.  I reopened the Safari folder and noted that the system had created new ".db" and ".db-wal" files alongside the ".plist" file.  I removed these three files and returned the previous ".db", "db-wal", and ".sk" files back to this folder.  I launched Safari and my "new" history was restored and everything was running smoothly, again.
It would have been nice to continue where I left off with my browser history, but it looks like a lost cause.  It would seem something got borked in the upgrade, but I don't know exactly what.  Maybe this is, somewhat, useful to anyone else who might be having the same, post-upgrade problem.  I'll stick with the "new" history.  If I, desperately, need to find something in the "old" history, I can open the ".plist" file in a text editor and search through it.  Not particularly efficient, but useful for something.

  • I tried private browsing not too long ago and i cannot remember a cool website i visited. Is there any way that I can access the web history?

Well I have a lot of people over and I recently got stumble. I don't like them seeing the things I have looked at because some of it isn't very tasteful. There was one site that I stumbled on and now I can't remember what it was. Is there anyway for me to retrieve the lost history?

  • Firefox erased my whole history

Loaded firefox up today and my whole history was gone.
Had approx 7 months worth of browsing and its all gone.

    Hey,
Just click on Firefox on the top left hand corner.
In the menu, you will find Options.
Clicking on it will open a window with various options.
You need to find the heading Privacy among them.
On this page, you will find Tracking, History and Location Bar.
Since your problem is related with History, there you will find
    the option Remember History.
Select this option and you will not have to worry anymore.
If you wish to recover your lost history, you can try any of these :
    Restoration (free)
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/231629/restoration.html
Recover deleted files--or delete them for good--with this small program.
Restoration is a free program that can scan your hard drive, floppy diskette or USB thumb drive and find files that have been deleted (Windows doesn't actually destroy files that you delete: it just marks the space they occupy as being available). It can then recover any recently deleted files it finds with a single mouse click.
    Have a nice day...

  • I have been browsing the internet for about 3 to 4 hours, there have been numerous crashes, but there is no history retained what can I do?

just checked the settings ... they have been reset to never retain history.... previous history is still there...... settings reset to always retain history & history has begun to collect again.
Is there any way to get my history back?
    why did it happen?
is it likely to happen again?

History that is lost can't be retrieved, but if Firefox is currently keeping history then it should be fine for now.
You would need an older copy of the places.sqlite database file to get the lost history back.
